That's the right way to do it...packing the shaft in the position of alignment in the hull bearing, then using the shaft as the datum to align the P bracket on outboard end and gearbox on the inboard end. Great progress.👍
yes it's a lot of job but its the best way for sure. this strut base exploration is really fascinating. the bedding could be in thicked epoxy but you really need to laminate all over it. cover the strut with fiber versus creat a nice pocket will just save you a lot of time .
It will be fun following along 2025 your absolutetly non-antic journey, learning how to renovate a boat and seeing how it is built. You're doing a great job.
Hi Stu. Love the progress you are making. I may have missed an earlier discussion on the following point, so apologies if I am covering old ground. I see that you have installed a prop shaft with an increased diameter but not changed the stern tube. Now only 4mm wiggle room between the new prop shaft and the stern tube. If you haven’t checked this out already, you may want to check how much movement there might be on the engine on the mounts fitted. Any excessive movement typically in heavy sea or simply when the engine is running you might find the prop shaft vibrating against the inside of the stern tube. If you need a wider stern tube, now will be the time to find out!
Fiberglassing inside and over the bolt area seems like the correct thing to do.. it adds strength and without Fiberglass you're counting on the bolts being strong enough to take the abuse and not break.. thanks for sharing knowledge and your journey with us!!!
Hi Stew and Marina. My wish for you in 2025 is good health, love, peace, patience and more of the very best in your endeavour to make Sea Bird the Queen of the water. I am totally addicted to you video updates and think you are a beautiful couple working as a team. Greetings John Powell 🇿🇦
Proper, prior, preparation and planning prevents piss poor performance 😂.As an old builder, i definitely approve and award an A+ for both Attitude and Style ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Happy New Year to you guys. You are rocking it with the alignment. I second the bedding of the P-bracket while it is on the shaft and shaft is set in your stern tube. We used to use stainless steel countersunk screws with hex head sockets in them rather than the slotted screws (for ease of later removal). The bracket would get a good layer of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) and so would all of the screws, threads and bolt heads to avoid any fibreglass from getting in or causing the bracket to bond while bedding. Outside just got puttied over…there is no strength there. To prevent vibration, you need to layer up the inside - please lots of layers to spread the load and dampen the vibrations. Only other concern I have is with the fact that you do not have a bearing in your stern tube and you are putting a flex coupling on your gearbox. Your shaft has the no second support other than at the gearbox and that through a flex coupling….this could get sloppy and lead to all kinds of additional vibrations. Normally a flex coupling is used to isolate the gearbox from the shaft line, provided the shaft has 2 bearings…food for thought.
Looking good. When built they probably did the same trick you did thru the hull on the P-bracket and then backfilled behind the P-Bracket to hull connection . Then when cured drill for bolts and add any additional fiberglass inside . Cheers Warren
I'm not an expert but I think you have done well so far and it is a joy to watch the channel hopefully soon you will be able to live aboard again see you next time and a happy new year to you may 2025 be launch year good luck 😊😊
If you have not made this decision yet, May I suggest a dedicated battery mounted as close to the windlass as possible. Much smaller charging cables can then be run to the battery and a short run of good heavy 1-0 cable to the winch. Your winch will perform better & last much longer.
Happy new years guys, But yes, trust in yourselves here, Set engine mounts to zero, set that in At engine “zero” back yourselves you can build fooking strong.. i believe in you both.. 😊
It's been said before, and not just by me but, your patience and attention to detail, in action, is a treat to watch! Heartfelt wishes to you both for the New Year, and on-going good luck!
Hey Marina and Stu! Happy New Year to you, may all your wishes come true and you finally can finish your job! I was laughing about the term "window" above the propeller! Funny idea to look for fishes. To be honest now: inside that boat is a pipe laminated through which they lead this plate down to close the hull against water ingress. The pipe inside the boat is ending 10-15cm above water level, also with a watertight cover. This system is used in case you have a rope or plastic bag in your propeller. You open the cover inside the boat, take away the "window" and with a long arm or stick you try to take away all rope/plastic bag. With this you don't need to dive into ice-cold water. Need a sketch how to... let me know by email. All the best to you, Peter from Germany.
Taking your time and understanding what the issue is before "fixing" something is smart. You'll also know your boat better and feel better about your solutions. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!! We too are excited to see what 2025 brings. Very excited about this engine, even with the highs and LOWS! I'm no mechanic or engineer and find myself struggling at times. Just keep calm and carry on. Cheers for watching 🙂
Lots of race boats had windows to check prop is feathered and for weed. Looking like a great job on the prop shaft etc. All good happy new year. Andy UK
Happy New Year to you both. You are both learning a lot in your progress in rebuilding Seabird. You will know it and trust it more in sea worthiness. Many Blessing to you both
Great job on the P bracket… love watching you do the work and that will do the job properly happy new year to you both looking forward to the adventures
Make sure to fiberglass the P-bracket attachment area over at the inside of the hull, to make sure it is strong enough to hold the P-bracket in extreme circumstances. You don't want your P-bracket to come loose in the middle of the ocean.
I hope you two had a great Christmas…. I see your back to the grunt work Stu…but every job done is one less to do. Can’t wait to see that your able to return to your future home…. Happy New Year! It’s been a pleasure to follow along and help you with this daunting project. Much love in the New Year! 🥂💙😎. Tommy
Engine servicing, get a had operated vacuum oil extractor. Has a tube to put down dipstick tube. Its the way I do our outboards on our Catamaran. When I used to to automatic transmissions, we used one to get the fluid level correct if we over filled and to suck out power steering fluid etc. Only bugger is it can take up a bit of space as you probably need about a 6L one. Could also use for cleaning out hard to get to spaces in bilge.
Turbo config with no turbo. Mmmmm, Are the internals turbo specs? What a future upgrade I can see you doing if poss…lol.. cheers guys..lovin the realistic vids of this boat rebuild lots…

Happy New Year! Look forward to seeing that engine going in.
Seabird is on its way toward soaring. She is a better boat each week under your care.
By not rushing you are able to progress without having to do it a second time . Engine installation is no easy task.
It will be fun following along 2025 your absolutetly non-antic journey, learning how to renovate a boat and seeing how it is built. You're doing a great job.
Keep at it guys!! Let’s get sailing in 2025!
Thanks you for absolutely killing it with the work and the editing both have come so far ❤

I can't start work without a sandwich and a cuppa tea
You've got that shaft idea sussed. Well done!
Thanks 👍
A lot of putting on and taking off...
A tedious process.
Cheers for watching 🙂

Happy 2025 and keep up de good work. Love your channel.
Thanks for sharing Stu, looks a tricky process. As Bon Jovi would say, keep the faith
I look forward to each and every one of your videos.
‘Never had any doubts that you knew what you were doing with the engine from the start Stu. Nice work mate.
Best wishes and good job. Your getting better all the time. Take it easy.
A tricky process. Keep going and you'll get it done right.
Thank you, I will.
Step by step.
Cheers for watching 🙂
You'll figure it out before it all said and done. I think your on the right track.
Love the sticks! Great idea!
Happy New Year keep cracking on I love to see your posts!

I think you're right.
I'm glad we are figuring out a plan.
We know how to do things until you do them..

I also think the little window is a good idea to inspect the propeller.
Nice tour Stu as you've figured out smoothing the P bracket attachment is the way to go nothing to interfere with flow.
If you have not made this decision yet, May I suggest a dedicated battery mounted as close to the windlass as possible. Much smaller charging cables can then be run to the battery and a short run of good heavy 1-0 cable to the winch. Your winch will perform better & last much longer.

Thanks for your video, like how you are doing this job. Interesting
Great work. Happy New Year!
Just filler on the outside to facilitate future maintenance. Reinforce inside to compensate for glass removed.
