Brilliant idea with those fillet pieces to break the angle of the bulkheads, she's going to be a tough girl when you get her into the waves. Keep going folks, you're one of my must watch channels.
That's right. As a structural engineer I can vouch for the fact that the way to avoid cracks is making smooth transitions; large radii in openings, around bends etc. FEA shows time and again that good geometry is so much more effective in reducing stress than just adding material.
Seeing the first bulkhead is a nice way to start the new year! I wish you the all the best for 2025 and look forward to seeing the progress in the upcoming months.
Great choice to go see whatever Vera wanted to show you. You will never regret the time spent with your wife and daughter. You can’t get those years back. Those moments will make sailing the world together that much sweeter.
The way you build the boat and present it is above average. In fact it is teh best I ever seen. So chilled and skilled. It's a pleassure to watch. Oh, please come to Norway on your trip. I have a dock in Trysfjorden near Søgne you can use. Looking forward to the bulkhead builds. Thanks
So nice to see a tiny bit of Vera, even behind the plastic! 🥰 I have two grandsons almost exactly her age and it has been fun watching them all grow up 'together'.
You've got the chain locker, it seems to be going so fast. The boat is coming together and you should be so proud of Johan's carpentry skills. I know the hard work involved, though the two of you make it look much easier than it really is. Another milestone reached well done.
Wait on the barrier coat seems like the smart idea! Good plan with foam material instead of marine plywood!! It's exciting to see the anchor rode locker framed up!!! WooHoo!🎉
5:21 it maybe obvious Johan so please forgive me if you already do it, when i was doing my time in the paint shop (car repair work) we had an old fiberglass like RV shower, but instead of water we had a compressed air shower, it was a standard shower head that you could move around (hand held) so we could step in dust ourselves off completely within a few seconds with all the gear on, then step out to wash our face and hands, (don’t inject compressed air into your skin) it wasn’t as good as a how water shower, but because it’s quick, if you need a pee, or a coffee or something it’s so much more comfortable, and at the end of the day we would leave our overalls and anything water proof in there and just hose everything down until everything was dust free again and ready for a normal wash, (please don’t stick your work clothes through the house washing machine) This is a ten minute simple little trick that can make your life so much more comfortable, if you can’t find an old second hand free or near free shower cubicle, use anything you can stand it, that roughly contains the dust that can also get wet.. (I don’t think I explained that very well). But it’s a cube without a top, separate from the boat, you stand in it fully clothed and shower in compressed air, at the end of the day however you actually still air first, then take off your equipment and roughly wash anything with soapy wash, inc you mask and anything that can get wet, then hang it up, and go home for a proper shower, the next day you put a new set of overalls on, and the still damp ones go to be washed properly, (we actually had a second hand washing machine for that as well, but that’s your call.. basically a quick clean me station so i can eat a sandwich and have a drink in comfort without feeling dusty and itchy…. Other panel beaters will understand and probably do something similar…
So much has been done but there is so much still to be done. Keep the faith, it will be done all in good 👍 time 😊. Just remember that you guys are not alone. Max Sacramento, CA USA...
WOW! The work you both do and have done is AMAZING! Your commitment is very inspiring to many I am sure. You sir are Viking Warrior Stud! You protect your family and you provide for all theirs and your own needs. You are fulfilling a great many dreams of your own making. KUDOS!
about the vacuum tape and removing it myself I use if the surface is not too rough and leaks can occur I always use duct tape under the vacuum tape. this saves a lot of clean up work. I don't put duct tape in the corners, I just put vacuum tape there because you can never get duct tape into a corner properly without it leaking.
Beautiful, the bulkheads and interior work begin! Thank you for continuing to share your remarkable journey with us! Wishing you a safe and amazing new year, with greetings from Canada!
Great progress on the grid. The attention to detail is inspiring along with your thoughtful approach to the work. As someone who loves the sea and sailing but will never own a boat it has been wonderful to follow your journey. Love the you took a moment with Vera.
+1 It made me think of how big video productions shoot scenes in the most efficient order instead of story order. This is a masterpiece in the making, and what really counts is the "final cut". I can't wait for the premiere!!
Waiting with the coating of the floor grid seems to be the best option, because seeing the boat swimm will be a even nicer thing to see ;) Keep going guys! 💪🏼
Hi, I’m Shane, and I just wanted to say how kind it is of you to prepare a room for me in your boat… the Shane Locker 😂 It is smaller than I like, and it looks like there’s no room for a bunk, but if you’re somewhere warm with the boat, maybe I’ll make use of it. I appreciate your foresight none the less😊
when I look at your difficult and tedious work I then look up and see you standing there and imagine you sailing and the hulls slicing through the waves; I can actually see Ran sailing and it is pleasing.
Really excellent video. I am struck by your ability to find motivation and stay motivated with quite time consuming repetitive tasks. That's a wonderful quality. It hit me when you said "tomorrow will be a long day of sanding". It no doubt was. In my own even much smaller projects, I have sometimes found it hard to stick with such tasks without giving in to boredom and fatigue. I'm impressed!
I have seen designs that have the windlass hidden below deck, with a lift up panel for access which makes for a clean, clutter free deck. You have lots of room!
I worked for Sunseeker motor yachts and we used a blue coloured resin for attaching the bulkheads which is apparently for that purpose. It saves time not having to mix up thickened epoxy . We called it number two and this was all it was used for . When tabbed in you cannot see the blue colour . It could be a time saver but possibly more expensive. Just a thought , it may be worth considering.. love watching your progress and the way you are working out the solutions as you go .
Happy New Year! Happy new bulkhead! I’ve been a long time subscriber watching you sail all over the globe. This is fun seeing the progress each week. Keep up the good work!
Happy New Year to you. Great vlog as always and I was excited to see the chain locker in and your talking about the next bulkhead and your bedroom. Hope 2025 is kind to you and as always I will be following the build. Greg 🇬🇧
Happy New Year to you all. I hope Ruth was spoilt with gifts from Santa. You made the right decision in my mind about not painting the keel grid first and then sanding the areas where tabbing would take place. What you can do is once each section is finished then paint that with your barrier coating. Cheers Ian
Could you not put a hatch on the chain locker and add another floor level with the opening and create a storage area under the chain locker? Loving this build 🙌
I know this is getting grueling, but I think you made the most efficient decision to do the bulkheads before coating. You are making great progress. It’s going slowly because you are doing this work mostly alone, and meticulously. It will be worth it for decades to come when you are out sailing her. You are building a boat, a living being in my estimation.
Marlin stands in the guest cabin "tourist economy class" with a less service level. The installation of the two bow thrusters will be very interesting.
Everytime i watch i am ovérawed at your skills but moreover your patience figuring things out as per the plan. I could never do this in a million years, left handed, both!!!!! Barrier coat first !!
I guess you could add a removable shelf board as soon as you know how high the chain stacks, as well as a half pipe for the chain so you can use it for additional wet storage.
Love the channel, consider the hight of the chain locker floor the hight of the drain holes and the waterline after heal angle is considered. I’ve seen chain lockers with sea water always sitting in them when sailing up wind.. you probably have accounted for this but I’d thought I toss it out there. I love watching your boat come together…
You might want to consider some form of support between the chain locker floor and the keel , I’m not sure what the weight of your chain might be but a belt and braces solution is some form of support . Love everything about this channel ❤️❤️❤️
You may want to install a mounting plate inside the anchor chain compartment to mount the windlass relay and possibly a Remote Control system to operate the windlass from the cockpit and so without wires. Also, you may want to install a PVC pipe from the bottom up to the top of the anchor compartment for the wiring.Cheers, Richard
DRAMA !!! aboard RAN!! Moly admits there are times when it's preferable to just hide in the chain locker!! hahaha Just Kidding of course. This was the most wonderful RAN production to date. Such wonderful family. Somebody LOVES her daddy.
Put a raised grid to hold the chain up off the floor of the chain locker. Close those holes you made in the floor. Instead drain the locker through the bulkhead with a side wall cockpit drain and valve in the deck storage area. You can hang fenders or lines from the top of the chain locker. Cheers and Happy New Year from Vancouver Island BC Canada.
Your comments about the bow thruster and no moving parts external of the hull, as a mechanic who loves jet skiing in my youth, and the Harrier Jump Jet Pegasus exhaust ports, as an example, might that help inspire some thoughts, I couldn't stop laughing, at Vera trying to get Dads attention, Not many years from now, the tables maybe reversed, trying to get Vera off her phone, and down to dinner, 😂😂😂, thank you for all the extra effort you put in, So that we might share a life,
I'm curious why you didn't want to raise the height of the bottom of the chain locker? Not only would you gain potential storage space below, but getting the drains higher reduces the amount of sea water flowing back up the drain lines.
When finished, this could be the best documented boat build in the history of mankind. Love to watch every step. Greetings from Finland.
You both looked so happy at the end of this video. It is fun to see this.
I agree. She looks so proud of him! It's really cool to see his talent and her contributions and support.
You have finally entered the phase of partitioning. I'm excited for you.
Thanks
Mads, from SailLife is very good too. But, Johan is doing a really
Good job.
So nice to see a new phase of the build. I have much respect for your ambition and perseverance.
I so look forward to another year of watching my favorite boat channel,😊
Thanks a lot for the kind words and for watching! 👍😊
So nice to a video up. All the best in 2025! It will be amazing to watch the progress. 🇨🇦
So nice to see a tiny bit of Vera, even behind the plastic! 🥰 I have two grandsons almost exactly her age and it has been fun watching them all grow up 'together'.
Its really great to see the first bulkhead being installed.
Can we all just get a fundraiser going, new shoes for Johan! :) God fortsättning på er!
Haha! It’s my epoxy shoes 😄
Traditional Boat Building Footware !
Yep, I've had those also! Godt nytt år @@RANSailing
Another amazing episode! And what a team you all make!
You've got the chain locker, it seems to be going so fast. The boat is coming together and you should be so proud of Johan's carpentry skills. I know the hard work involved, though the two of you make it look much easier than it really is. Another milestone reached well done.
First bulkhead. That's a big milestone. Congrats on the progress.
Wait on the barrier coat seems like the smart idea! Good plan with foam material instead of marine plywood!! It's exciting to see the anchor rode locker framed up!!! WooHoo!🎉
I'm starting to think that 80% of boat building is sanding! 😂😊 Thanks for sharing!
I’m starting to believe that too… 😂 Cheers! /Johan
@@RANSailing I think Mads (@SailLife) might be jealous of all the sanding you are doing .. you need to invite him to join in the fun 🤣

I like the self-draining chain locker.
Thanks for sharing.
Happy 2025 🥳
Thanks for watching! 😊
Speaking as one who lives in the Northern Territory, I have to agree with Vera, the best crocodile, is a stuffed crocodile!
What a good job and a joy to watch this serie and all so good prepeared and planned.

Great progress on the grid. The attention to detail is inspiring along with your thoughtful approach to the work. As someone who loves the sea and sailing but will never own a boat it has been wonderful to follow your journey. Love the you took a moment with Vera.
Totally awesome progress.
Now the fun part is starting. What a progress!
I love that Johan wanted to see a barrier coat of paint on the boat, then his more "logical"side chimed in and said "Nah, later."
+1 It made me think of how big video productions shoot scenes in the most efficient order instead of story order. This is a masterpiece in the making, and what really counts is the "final cut". I can't wait for the premiere!!

And by the way, I love your channel and what you guys are doing. 🤗
Keep up the good work!
Sweet, it must feel so great to start on the interior layout of the boat!

With two bulkheads in place, this episode is a true milestone. Congratulations, and wishing you a Happy New Year!

the chain locker is an ideal stage to do a punch and Judy show for the kids

😀😀👍👍❤❤ Good idea with foam material instead of marine plywood for weight saving. 2025 should be a good year with the build. Bye from Seattle, WA. USA
We do have a stainless steel duplex Chain. I really recommend it. Ours ist Ultra Marine. Really good. Thanks for sharing!

You guys are just incredible. I’m amazed that the water line is so far down.

I'm looking forward to following your thought process regarding the bow thruster design.
I love watching your progress.
It's a good idea to be able to pull all that chain aft to the first grid member during passages.
Not sure how high off the waterline your drainage from anchor locker is but it looks not high enough..
DRAMA !!! aboard RAN!! Moly admits there are times when it's preferable to just hide in the chain locker!! hahaha Just Kidding of course. This was the most wonderful RAN production to date. Such wonderful family. Somebody LOVES her daddy.
Happy New Year RAN sailing. A little ship wrights ditty for you, In glue and dust we put our trust, if all else fails use giant nails.
Definitely bulkheads first, then barrier coat.
Wonderful progress; I can hear the excitement in your voices as you talk about the future components of the build. Happy New Year!
Looking forward to seeing how this year goes with your build.
A great start to the new year. Happy New Year to all three of you!
Love your channel. Lay up both faces of your foam core at the same time in a vacuum bag.
Put a raised grid to hold the chain up off the floor of the chain locker. Close those holes you made in the floor. Instead drain the locker through the bulkhead with a side wall cockpit drain and valve in the deck storage area.
You can hang fenders or lines from the top of the chain locker.

Glad you didn't barrier coat yet be great to finish all the internal glass work first or at least a section at a time.
Best Wishes to You all for the New Years Great watching your amazing project ! San Diego, ca USA
Off to a good start in 2025! Thanks for another great episode! Ron

Typically you keep the significant weight of the chain as low as possible in the hull.
I don't know much about boats but this is looking little bit small for wife room 😂😂😂..... Love your videos
