Musk was an initial investor in Open AI - after criticizing AI dooming the planet. On the board - he did not like the direction and tried unsuccessfully to take over the company in 2018. He also did not like OpenAI's hiring practices. In 2020, Musk left the company and sold his stock citing a conflict of interest with Tesla AI. In November 2022, OpenAI's first chatbot was released to the public. The technology was soon incorporated into Microsoft's Bing search engine as ChatGPT4. OpenAI has been profitable since its start in 2015, but has increased its loses from the release of ChatGPT. Musk was one of 11 board members who started the company in 2015.

      > In 2020, Musk left the company and sold his stock citing a conflict of interest with Tesla AI.
Correction: Not 2020. It was in Feb 20, 2018, when OpenAI and GPT still in its infancy state, and soon after his failed attempt to take over the company from the co-founders and the CEO.
By 2019, Microsoft has made investment of $1B to OpenAI and signed the partnership, which OpenAI transitioned from non-profit to for-protift. Most of the work and milestones were after Musk left.

Time and tide will not wait for any person. That means we must pay attention to how new technologies, and specifically AI, will make it easier for companies to become more efficient. Simply, this companies may not need a lot of workers, your bank may not need many staff. Your insurer may not need many workers. And the list keeps growing.

It has nothing to do with AI. Economic distress in America is enormous. Many banks have gone under. Inflation is biting harder. Ukraine miscalculation is obvious. Facebook has been using AI in most of its features and products for more than 15 years now, so Ai has nothing to do with it. They embarked on unprofitable projects. And over hired. Apple has never laid off employees despite the economic downturn. They did well in hiring and never had failed projects. Metaverse failed. Gaming projects failed. Fintech, Lira failed. In the last 20 months, Sanbberg left, nobody is there to "tam the lion"
Most Tech companies went woke: hired talents in order to prevent competitors from having access, they kept them idle, just to hijack a pool of talent. Over hired without proper assessment and protection. The existing projects couldn't turn in expected revenue, even before inflation war in USA set it. Let's put it in perspective without blaming AI. 95% of big tech have been using AI in the last 15 years. My advice: Improvise, Build passive income as a personal hedge against inflation. Do not hesitate to ask question where common knowledge fails.

How do all the comments here miss the whole point of this video?
He's not saying he's the reason OpenAI exists to brag, he's saying that he originally funded OpenAI with a different vision in mind, where OpenAI's AI developments would be open source (aka in layman terms, the code is out there for the public to see, use and critique) and not-for-profit.
Yet, OpenAI has done a full U-turn and become a closed-source (code is NOT public, but made privy only to insiders), for-profit company that does not share it's developments or AI use-cases to the world in its fullest capacity.
Guys. Please read between the lines. Maybe take off the veil of hate you have for this man that is blinding you from looking at things objectively and you'll be able to critically think for once.

Surprisingly, this video gives a lot more clarity to what is going on behind the scenes at OpenAI! Ilya came aboard OpenAI reluctantly, only agreeing because he thought it would be non-profit and bring about AGI for humanity safely. Now the company has gone so far off its original mission, it seems everything from Sam Altman being fired to Microsoft not being consulted about it makes sense.

Have you run non-profit technical companies? It's difficult to get enough money to just literally keep the lights on. You are pretty much forced into a for profit blend. @@JJ-ix4zr Yea but as a result of the 700/770 employees protesting his firing, Satya Nadella hiring Altman and any people who quit OpenAI, Microsoft basically forced the boards hand - not to say some of the concerns of AGI aren't valid but not consulting a 49% owner before firing the CEO is stupid.

There's a documentary/Interview of Ilya. And he's too concerned about the wrong use of AGI as Elon is. Elon, Ilya and Geoffrey Hinton whose worked led the foundation of the AI boom we're witnessing towards are all in the same page and their concern is super valid. It has spearheaded a new race. And with the advancements in Quantum Computers this will make the period to achieve AGI even more shorter because AGI will not run on normal computers it's the Quantum Computers who will evenly have the original capacity to cater the computing power needed to run a full fledged AGI.

If you are prepared to break new ground making mistakes is a given.
Commercialisation is always the end game for something to become sustainable. The mistake was not having the legals in place but hindsight is always 20 20 when you are sitting in the backseat and not actually doing the noble work of pioneering the innovation. Great interview 👍

Went straight to the source for its side of the story.
Me: why do Elon Musk have beef with ChatGPT
    ChatGPT:
As an AI language model, I don't have real-time information or personal opinions. As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, there were no known public instances of Elon Musk expressing personal animosity or "beef" towards ChatGPT or AI language models in general. Elon Musk has been known to have concerns about artificial intelligence and its potential risks, but those concerns are generally related to broader issues such as AI safety, ethics, and responsible development.
It's worth noting that Elon Musk has been involved in the development of OpenAI, the organization behind the creation of ChatGPT, and he has expressed support for its mission. However, opinions and perspectives can evolve over time, so it's possible that there may have been developments or statements since my last update that I am not aware of.

This is such a misleading title. This is not about Elon Musk's ego...
... It's actually a very revealing account about how OpenAI started, and where it is today. I share the same questions as Mr. Musk around 'how can an open sourced, non-profit company suddenly becomes closed sourced, and for profit?'. What happened here is actually alarming.

    There’s a difference between OpenAI & Bing.
OpenAI provides far more information for an individual question than if you were to use Microsoft (Bing).
Either way, both are unique and preferred over Google.
It’ll take some time before people start adjusting from Google to OpenAI.

I think education and schools needs to be available for everyone. Nowadays if you are or your parents are not rich, you don't have options to get degree unless you will be in dept or go through scholarships which won't be provided for everyone but many companies still look at your degree records on your resume.

    • @tetrabromobisphenol

Yes, indeed the scariest prospect of all is an AI surreptitiously taking over the infrastructure of a "legitimate" company like MS over a period of months or years, embedding itself in a latent state, and then one fine day "going live with Skynet". The hubristic humans at MS would never have a clue it was happening (nor admit to it even if they did), and to the outside world it would all seem to have been human-initiated activity...and by the time anyone caught on, it would be too late.
