    For this second episode of Worship Tech Tour, Jake and I visit Deer Creek Church to take a look at their pretty incredible tech setup. As a midsized church, it is pretty incredible to see how much tech they have implemented, with Dante, Live streaming, Ableton, and more. Deer Creek is no mega church - so you may rethink what is possible for a church with only a mid-sized congregation and two services.

    A solid video but here are a few quick fact checks:
    * Allen&Heath ME-1 personal mixers are 40 channel not 48
    * The SQ mixers are fantastic but you do need a separate $800 IO card to enable Dante for each mixer
    * The Black Magic switch (ATEM Television Studio HD) cannot record. They have a HyperDeck Studio Mini Ultra HD recorder sharing the same rack space to do the recording to SD cards

    God bless you, man! Amazing content! I'm from Brazil and I'm looking for good content about audio and streaming on churches. I'm volunteer head of sound ministry and I'm looking for to improve our audio quality on streaming. I know nothing about lighting, because we don't use it in our church, it's pretty much white lights all over the temple. I'm loving this tech tour!

    Aaron was taking about having to use a bunch of DI boxes with his old interface to get to XLR. Most audio Interfaces have balanced 1/4” connections (TRS). A simple TRS to XLR adapter/snake would have worked. The only real benefit of going unbalanced 1/4” (TS) to a DI box to XLR is having access to a ground lift on the DI box, if you have ground issues. Just thought it was interesting he was trying to use a bunch of DIs. Also this might have contributed to the sucky sound quality. Hope this information helps someone. Fantastic video by the way!

    • @wessleystern1773
      @wessleystern1773 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You never want to run a TRS to XLR snake into computer equipment, if phantom power is enabled it will fry the interface. He was doing that to protect his equipment. Also, even if he had great DIs and cables, Dante will still sound better. It has to do with the amount of times A/D is done, and the in what time. In Dante all A/D conversion is done at the same time based off of a universal world clock. Makes things much cleaner.

    • @wilrobbins7595
      @wilrobbins7595 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, I never actually thought about phantom power causing an issue. Thanks for the heads up. I was just more throwing out the difference between unbalanced and balance 1/4”. (Because I honestly didn’t know the difference for the longest time when I was younger.) Also Dante is great, and it makes total sense in this situation. I wasn’t knocking the Dante setup in anyway. Thank for the reply man, I appreciate it!

    Many churches prefer not to have tracks or automated words thru propresenter, they want the freedom to do the chorus again or have a prolonged instrumental. It is a good idea for many churches.
    But if you are running tracks, you are very confined to the exact timing and structure of the song. So why wouldn't you go ahead and use automated words thru propresenter/ableton?

    • @Socapexxx
      @Socapexxx 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I generally have 2 responses to this type of question:
      A: Depending on the musicians, the song and a few other factors, you can generally stop the tracks and keep playing. Yes, you might lose some things from the tracks, but generally, it's a sacrifice most are willing to make to repeat a chorus or similar. This would mean a lyrics operator has to be present to keep going.
      B: By not automating everything, it gives more people an opportunity to serve. Lyrics operators can also be good training for vocalists.
      Then there's also reliability. Without a proper show control solution, automation where it all stems from PP6 triggers or Ableton can be risky - from simple user error to communication problems and then technical failure such as network drops. I agree that there are many reasons why automation generally isn't a good idea, but I also see a lot of churches that struggle to get competent volunteers or staff where automation is necessary.

    • @orafael.coelho
      @orafael.coelho 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ableton live lets you roam throughout the whole song forth and back. It doesn't take your freedom at all.

      They are sending audio over a dante network. Using the same pre amps on multiple consoles will require either an analog splitter snake, or a dante network. Dante training is free, check it out.

    PS. Dante system may be good but they are just one of thousands of software out there that's even better and less complicated it's like do you really need Pro Tools in the studio really they have made Pro Tools the standard in recording studios just like everything else I beg to differ on that subject. Now audacity is just as good and even better much more simpler to run and to operate maybe one day they'll have a pro software for audacity they probably do I work with just the basic which just works as good as Pro Tools for me, even cake walk is cool too. just to name a few.

    I just saw your video for the first time, If you have to re-mix more than three times that's to much for the Live stream. I can understand a second time sending audio from mic dirct box to the conlrol room, but sending it back out is a bit Redundant. It looks like to me that your doing a Broadway show. It's seem that all the lighting effect is a bit much, and It distracts from the gospel message and changing lights all the time for every song makes it too much like Broadway. Sorry just being honest and real with what I see. I'm old school, I also pray that your Allen & Heath mixing console does not have a glitch in software problems. That would be a disaster during church service. Also relying on computers too much could be a problem if the software is not 1000% in good shape and reliable. Again I am an old-school engineer audio and video who like the idea of the new stuff that's coming out, but sometimes it can be a bit too much and overwhelming if it goes Haywire. That would not be a good thing for the engineer there in the control room or video booth. But my hat goes off to you, thumbs up in your Endeavor to proclaim the gospel to the people. PS. Try not to go overboard in the Broadway production, I don't think the Lord would be pleased with that, he's a very simple person and he doesn't want his message to be lost in the show. Been there, done that, and burnt out. God bless.
