Finally, someone who talks about how each program applies a different formula to the raw images!!! :) I have tried several programs, and the only one that doesn't really change my raw photo, and I can see that the jpg is really similar, is a very unknown prg, Silkypix, quite slow, but also a good way to make all my files into tiff and from them edit where ever I want! Thank you and best regards from Uruguay.
Great video, want a bit more fun, put in a 1GB card and shoot that, gives you the feeling of having a 36 roll of film. You could go 1 step further and label them up as a film recipe, so 1 card shoot Acros, and to shoot Classic Neg you need to put in another 1 GB card, just like analogue.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful idea. To go one more step forward: Is it somehow possible to save each film recipe to each SD card, so when you put the SD card into the camera it automatically uses that film recipe?
Hold up FujiFlim does have a plug-in for Lightroom of it’s film simulation but it will only work on shoots taken by Fuji film camera. I use it all the time. It’s better if you do it directly on the camera to avoid post editing. I use the custom simulation from fujiflim weekly he’s awesome. I shoot both raw and simulation many times I share the jpegs because it looks so good.
Thank you for the tip! Great to know. I am now shooting jpeg only and I find the images come out better than when i tried to edit the raw files. Cheers
Your profiles work so much better for your subject than the fuji x weekly. I find that they are too US centric. If you're not shooting a dusty, abandoned gas station, basket ball hoop, motel sign in the desert then fuji x weekly just makes everything look like a muddy Matrix colour grade. The best one they have for outside of that environment is the Ektar recipe, even if it's a little extreme in the white balance shift.
I appreciate that, thanks. I’ve not browsed too much through Fuji X Weekly. From what I’ve seen, it seems more towards replicating existing film stock, whereas I’d prefer to just tweak it to my own custom needs than try and replicate something. I’m intrigued to see Ektar though - cheers!
I couldn't agree more with you ! I've tried many of them and the only one I kept was ektar. Other simulations I use now is custom I've made or some of them founded elsewhere and tweaked
Agree with Grey and ditto above comment by Michael. Ektar is the only one I found useful. The remaining custom recipes are my own. Not that Fuji X weekly recipes are bad in anyway. His recipes just suit that environment. If I'm in that kind of environment, his recipes are perfect.
Jeez, I’ve owned multiple Fujifilm cameras (switched from X-T4 back to Sony, had an X100V stolen, and now got an X-T30 II) and I’ve always wondered the same… you perfectly verbalized what’s been in my head for so long. Even more intriguing is the fact that just today I also tested the Ektar recipe and found it to be great. Richie does great work but this is the reality for people not living in that area.
So I finally bought that X100V that I was coveting for so long. The silver one! This video came at the perfect time! I'm doing raw+jpeg but haven't even touched the raws yet. The jpeg film simulations are too much fun (this coming from a raw snob of the last 10 years). Keep up the awesome content! I'm excited to follow along with my new Fuji 😁
Very nice video! I’d like to add two more points to you: - As X RAW Studio uses the CPU from the camera, the requirements on the PC/Mac are quite low. Ideal if you want to run it on a slower machine during vacation, for example. - It can’t be used with older cameras than X-T2/ X-Pro2. For me that’s one major flaw to the X-T1, but at least I have Capture One.
Cheers! Good to know about the X-T1 (which is a shame). I did mention about the cpu in my filming, but cut it from the final video as I realised, for my use at least, I’d probably actually benefit more from speed if I had my Mac’s processor doing the work haha! I appreciate for those with older computers it would be a bonus though.
Another great video, Joe! I appreciate your agnosticism when it comes to camera brands, but as a Fuji shooter I’m definitely enjoying the videos of late on the fun of the Fujifilm shooting experience. And I’m inspired to go out shooting locally more. I usually travel for photography, so the last year has been difficult. I just need my summer temperatures to come down below their current 117°F. Cheers from Arizona!
Great video! Important to mention that Dynamic Range cannot be increased in post even using the Fuji X RAW Studio. So if you want to use a recipe using DR400 it will have to be shot in DR400.
Cheers Joe, knew about this program but didn't realise you could do as much! Got an X-S10 and thinking to sell the superior A7S III as its that much liberating
Ahh dang, that’s a massive shame. I think the key component is that the software uses the camera’s processor to process the image, rather than the computer’s. Perhaps the USB port isn’t fast enough to support the file transfer back and forth between computer and camera 😔
I feel the same! What started as a simple topic I’d had listed for a number of years as a backburner video idea, ended up being a solid series of continuing ideas
I've been using Fuji X Raw for some years now... but it's cool that you discovered it and can use it to simplify your workflow. It saves so much time as you can also apply settings to multiple photos and batch convert them at once. And all for free! Fuji X Raw Studio is really powerful.
The biggest issue I have is some of the mono recipes ask for high ISO. No coming back from a high ISO in RAW, so whilst its nice to have a safety net of RAW there is a certain point that it doesn't work. Even exposure choice/settings at the time of the shot, for some of the more extreme FFSR (FujiFilmSimRecipes), your commitment to getting 'that vibe' right there and then can work really well for the Jpg but the RAW.. hmm... you'd prolly never shoot that moment at those settings if wanting proper post production dynamic room (such as deliberately blowing highlights or crushing darks to suit the FFSR). At the moment I am needing to really knuckle down and decide what aspects of FFSR I keep and which I ditch, because at the moment I am even feeling that with the really good SooC shots I can still enhance them better just from very mild slider adjustments in LR. Adding to the fact I have RNI5 so can apply a more realistic grain and analogue effect, I am starting to think of the FFSR as starting points rather than completely finished images. Argh..! but then that kinda defeats the point lol. Round and round we go the merry-go-round of editing!
Really nice video! My wish for Fujifilm: to be able to replace the built-in simulations (like the ones I will never use) with custom ones *without* using up a custom position. (The X-S10, for instance, only has 4 custom positions.) This way we could use our custom recipes the same way we use the built-in ones, whenever we want.
Really enjoying your videos. I have just swapped my old Nikon for an X-T4 (your previous couple of videos were the final convincing I needed to take the plunge and buy it) as constant editing in post had really depleated my motivation to go out and about with my camera. I've only had the X-T4 a few days but I am already loving experimenting with film simulations and finding out what results I can get straight out of camera. I look forward to the next video.
Dumping my dSLR and all that post processing was a light-bulb moment for me. Other than playing around with Fuji RAF files in X RAW Studio I have not touched raw for a long time. I can't remember the last time I fired up post processing software.
Hey Joe! I'm going through the same process as well. The final comments you made about casual photos and having some nice photos straight of the camera. I totally get it. I'm also shooting more and being more excited into going out with my camera. Exactly because that I know, once the photo is taken, that's it. Job done. But I still have the raw version, if I'd like to go any further. Well done. Good videos and good channel 👍
Hey I'm also a Fuji user and I literally went through ur exact same editing burnt out and jpg / recipe / Fuji X Raw Studio epiphany! Nice video and good summary of it all.
Great video! I will definitely give the program a try. I'm coming from a nikon Camera and I'm now using a fuji x100 v. I'm super happy with it. My favorite stock is also Classic Negative. Its so refreshing to not shoot raw!
Glad it was helpful! I’d known about this app since it’s release, but until getting involved with JPEG recipes, I’d never taken the time to try it out. As soon as I did, I knew exactly what it’s best use would be!
This has been my second biggest question! I am from a rebel XTi back in 2008ish so I’m used to more physical buttons and less menus and options. I want my x100v to have the dials set to iso and shutter speed so I can keep aperture at auto/priority but it’s a whole matrix
Thanks Joe for this helpful video. I’m quite new to the Fuji system, and only recently I’ve discovered the concept of recipes. I’m quite satisfied with the images I took with the Kodak chrome 2 recipe I found on Fuji weekly, but than I thought if there is a way I can bring the camera’s recipe into Lightroom. Thanks again!
Useful content, capably presented without distracting hype, amiable host👍. (Nice birthday pizza, also.😁) We need a simple way to bring recipes directly into LR as camera profiles, IMO. Read about and tried Fuji Luts to PS to LR “user custom profile” - enables the Fuji “look” to other cam raw files, but w/mixed results. Do you (or your viewers) know of any simpler process that does not involve w/luts? “Profile” in X-Raw Studio not the same as “Profile” in LR. Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it; cheers! Unfortunately I don’t know of any “one size fits all” approach to transferring the in-camera processing over to software. In terms of film simulation profiles, Capture One is a little more accurate than Lightroom, but I’d say it also comes as a cost of less organisation tools than what Lightroom offers. It definitely feels like we’re in a weird transition period with Lightroom at the moment and have been for about 4 years now…
Great video Joe! Thanks very much for the tip about Fuji Studio Raw. I didn’t know we can pre-load it with recipes and transfer over to our camera. This will save me so much time. It’s game changer!
Thanks Joe this is fantastic i will be doing this going forward while still shooting jpegs and raw, if i dont like the jpeg i can experiment with the raw :)
I’m a 1st time viewer & enjoyed this video so much, I subscribed. The video was well done, information presented in well thought out & understandable fashion.
What an excellent video, I’m experimenting with X raw studio at the moment and I’m having lots of fun so thanks for all your useful advice. I have also just subscribed. 👍
Interesting video, wasn't even aware Fuji had this software available. If I were satisfied with the stock simulations, that is not trying to simulate Kodak film for example, is this different than selecting the Fuji film profiles in Lightroom? I get that there's a difference between the in camera jpg processing and how Lightroom renders the RAW file but are you speaking in terms of before or after selecting the Fuji film profiles in Lightroom?
Great Video Joe. Will this exact process work for video - that is being able to see how this different recipes effect video footage? Thanks again for the insights!
Is there a way to create a Fuji recipe based off of my custom Lightroom preset so that can be used on jpegs SOOC. I essentially want to emulate my own style so I can shoot JPEG and reduce time editing. If I shoot raw and export the raw with Lightroom edits, would Fuji X studio pick up all of the adjustments made in order to convert into a custom film sim. It would still be from the same camera but unsure if Fuji x studio would register the edits.
Question, say example I now copy the recipe to the camera. But then, this is only if only JPG correct? if I set to raw, those recipe still becomes "RAW" and those receipt won't apply right?
Great overview and introduction, thanks a lot! I have just one major problem: The camera profile section of my X Raw Studio is missing. I can see the user profile section, but the camera profile section is missing :/ I'm using the Fuji X-E3. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
for this to work do I need to shoot in Raw+JPEG or can I shoot just RAW and apply my personal Recipe's to the files after on my pc? By shooting just RAW I can save battery life and memory space.
I just bought an Xpro3 so I’m excited to try this out on that camera. Do you know if the jpg recipes work in the EVF? I’d love the ability to preview the custom color profiles as I’m shooting, so what I see is what I get.
Quick question: can you edit the dynamic range setting in X Raw? I find that I can’t if the image was taken at DR100 for example. I suppose it needs to be set at DR400 or auto? Thanks.
Hey Joe, Good Content, big fan all the way from the Philippines. I hope you can make a video tutorial on how to apply film sim recipe on the actual camera itself.
Just started to get into using the X RAW STUDIO, OK but what software does anyone use to keep the photos on once edited. Ideas please as to what system keep the Fuji look pure. Thanks.
Has anyone figured out to crop images with this software? It says you can (under the image menu) but I don't see a way to select a portion of the photo
Great video. Welcome to the world of JPEG only, it really is quite liberating. Unfortunately, FX Studio doesn't work with the X-Pro1 or X-T1. Which is frustrating, as they're my cameras ;)
I enjoyed watching your explanation of recipes and how to handle in X Raw Studio. It is a pity recipes cannot be exchanged as little files. Would make exchanging or installing them on Fuji camera's or X Raw Studio much more easier.
Filip, Yes you can actually exchange the recipes. For example all recipes in my computer are stored in C:\Users\\AppData\Local\com.fujifilm.denji\X_RAW_STUDIO\X-S10 folder with a .FP1 extension. These are basically xml files. So what I do I create one style and then copy that to a new file, open in text editor, change all the parameters I need and save it again. You can definitely send another person these files and if they copy it to this same folder, the X Raw Studio will see it as new user preset. Only catch being, the first few lines of your xml file is going to be specific to your camera. So you just have to replace it with yours, that's it. No issue, just generate a random style from your own setup, copy the first few lines from there and replace it in the file you received from another person.
I just migrated from Canon to Fujifilm and trying out the recipes are fun and more creative. But when shooting portraits for like weddings or like other events, does shooting with film recipes good or go back to shooting raw. I mean there is a setting for shooting RAW + Fine in Fujifilm but im still confused if whether the recipe applies to the raw or not. I think you said that the jpeg came from the manufacturer of the camera and the raw is from the system but still im kinda confused. need help new to fuji hehe ty
The recipe (or indeed any of the base Fujifilm film simulations) is only applied to the jpeg. The original RAW file remains unaltered. You can use the same unaltered RAW file over and over again to produce as many different recipe/simulation jpeg images as you like.
I'm using the USB-C cable that came with the camera and I can't seem to be able to connect my X-T4 to my MacBook Pro. I did change connection settings of Connection Mode to USB RAW Conv/backup restore also turned "off" USB Power Supply (as this was recommended).
Hmm, interesting. I’ve definitely found that it only worked with some USB 3.0 cables and not thunderbolt cables (with USB backwards compatibility) for example. But if it’s the one that came with the camera, I’m unsure… 🥴
Although you _can_ still tweak the jpeg with different profile settings, Canon doesn’t quite offer the same extensive controls as Fujifilm for in-camera processing, which is unfortunate.
Hi Joe .. great video. I'm trying to create a custom recipe for my x100v, but it won't allow me to adjust Dynamic Range, or the D Range Priority from the raw file. Am I missing something obvious ? Appreciate your input. Thanks
Same issue here and I found the answer in these comments. If you create a recipe within the software you must ensure your original raw file was shot using the identical dynamic range to the recipe you're following.
Fuji lets you bracket 3 different film simulations - I wish you could bracket 3 different custom settings. I assume it's pretty preocessor-intensive so maybe that's why you cant...
dude you are a fucking life saver. Gone is the contant raw grind with this camera. I love darktable but it handles Fuji raws horribly. Bad demosaicing and the noise looks weird.
Gxace mentioned
@@mirjbrzi well in Fuji cameras, you can set presets (C1 to C7). So that could be a quick way to switch between films?

Your profiles work so much better for your subject than the fuji x weekly. I find that they are too US centric. If you're not shooting a dusty, abandoned gas station, basket ball hoop, motel sign in the desert then fuji x weekly just makes everything look like a muddy Matrix colour grade. The best one they have for outside of that environment is the Ektar recipe, even if it's a little extreme in the white balance shift.

I find that the Ektar works better with a desaturated Astia than the Classic Chrome. I recommend it. ✌️

I love my X100v I’m still learning how to get the best from it as I’m a canon man but it’s so much fun to use I think I’m converted.
Very nice video!
I’d like to add two more points to you:
- As X RAW Studio uses the CPU from the camera, the requirements on the PC/Mac are quite low. Ideal if you want to run it on a slower machine during vacation, for example.

Cheers! I feel you on the travel front. I can’t wait to get back to a frequent travel schedule. Until then… local it is!
I’m in AZ too and know how you feel. Want to do more street, but Phoenix is always dead 😂, and Tempe doesn’t do it for me anymore.
I've been shooting fujifilm for years and never paid any attention to these film sims. This makes me love my camera for a whole new reason. Thank you!
So as I understand it, you can just shoot raw then connect the Fuji camera and apply all the recipes you have in the Fuji software?
Yes.
Great video! Important to mention that Dynamic Range cannot be increased in post even using the Fuji X RAW Studio. So if you want to use a recipe using DR400 it will have to be shot in DR400.

Woah!.. Joe, this is exactly video tutorial which i'm looked for! is it works only for * RAF's or SOOC, jpegs too?
so many thanks for this video! so helpful!
Great overview and introduction, thanks a lot!
I have just one major problem: The camera profile section of my X Raw Studio is missing. I can see the user profile section, but the camera profile section is missing :/
I'm using the Fuji X-E3.
Thanks.
Great video. I'm new to my X-E4 and need to know how I transfer raw files from my camera to my Macbook. Any advice is appreciated!
I would like to know how large the file is if you shoot a raw fine shot and convert it to tiff in camera. Converted to 300 d.p.i.
Hey Joe, Good Content, big fan all the way from the Philippines. I hope you can make a video tutorial on how to apply film sim recipe on the actual camera itself.
Is there a difference between this and the ‘camera matching’ settings in Lightroom, and the baked-in film sim modes in each RAF files?
Well explained. Thanks.
Glad it’s clear to follow!
Yes, could you tell us your video settings?
Just started to get into using the X RAW STUDIO, OK but what software does anyone use to keep the photos on once edited. Ideas please as to what system keep the Fuji look pure. Thanks.
Excellent explanation - thank you.
Is there something like X Raw Studio for Canon? I have a Canon EOS T6i.
Very interesting and useful, thank you!
@@bibhasdas7801 that is great! Thank you for the tip
How is this different than applying a Fuji recipe to a raw file in Capture One?
is there a firmware update for this for the x70? it does not show usb connection option
Thank you Joe great video !!
Gotta give X Studio Raw a chance. I love shooting jpeg with the Fuji´s, but I never tried the software. Thanks for the inspiration 😊
FujiXWeekly + X RAW Studio
Job done.
IIUC - you won't be able to do this with just jpegs, but will need to import RAWs to convert into jpegs with recipes applied
@@mattfromyvr So much I had figured out. The same thing apply if you want to edit in camera. I allways shoot jpg+raw anyways 😊
thanks for sharing, really helpful! 😎
Fuji X-T2 user here: I love jpegs only, only switch to RAF when capturing star trails and milkyway 📸
Sadly, the X-T1 doesn’t work for this.
Super helpful! Thank you :)
Great job :)
Would you mind to share the recipe of the bday weekend images with us?
Joe you thnk i can simulate any thing like this profiles in my canon eos R5?
Although you _can_ still tweak the jpeg with different profile settings, Canon doesn’t quite offer the same extensive controls as Fujifilm for in-camera processing, which is unfortunate.
Does this app works on older X cameras?
Hi Joe .. great video.
@@PhilNunez Thanks for the input.
i try my recipes always like that Very nice Lot of ppl don't know this is possible
Like from Hong Kong!
Still really great content Joe!
Thanks for your vid:)
Cheers! I often have quick ideas for videos like this but then never get them finished/published. Glad to have followed through on this one 👍
Not having to edit every photo is Soooo liberating.
Fuji lets you bracket 3 different film simulations - I wish you could bracket 3 different custom settings. I assume it's pretty preocessor-intensive so maybe that's why you cant...
Is there no crop function? Awesome video as always!
You crop the jpeg not the RAF.
Great info. Thanks.
Good Morning, thank you for your great film simulation Video , have a great week
Thanks
why not just put the SD card in the computer instead of plugging in your camera?
The software needs the computer plugged in as it actually uses the processor built into the camera. Kind of a pain, but I get why it does it.
dude you are a fucking life saver. Gone is the contant raw grind with this camera. I love darktable but it handles Fuji raws horribly. Bad demosaicing and the noise looks weird.
Since moving to Fuji years ago and use the Jpegs 90-95% of the time and mostly monochrome... Thanks
Nice to see that you invested in a good chair.
Good spot! I’ve been wanting an Aeron ever since I left permanent work 7 years ago
So do I take the photos in raw or jpeg to use this app?
You can only change the processing values by using raw files. JPEGs are viewable, but not editable.
Really helpful 😄
