  • The Bookmaker by filmmaker Girum Berehanetsehay unfolds in the mists of the high Ankober Mountains of Ethiopia.
Here, Archbishop Kalehiwot Habtewold still practices the ancient craft of parchment bookmaking.
To be able to do that, he sets his young disciples an unusual task: to find enough high-quality goat skins for the parchment needed to hand-craft these religious books.
The exquisitely illustrated religious books take years, even decades, to produce.
This film immerses us in a remote and traditional world of patience and prayer, ceremony and craft, fathers and sons.
Producer/director Girum Berehanetsehay is an Ethiopian filmmaker based in Addis Ababa. With more than a decade of local and international production experience, he has worked on more than 20 feature films, as well as commercials and music videos, in various roles.

Thank you so much! We learn in the.States that Africa didn’t have writing systems yet they would tell us about Hieroglyphics. I never knew Ethiopia had books dating back thousands of years.

Ankober is a region of Ethiopia in central Ethiopia. It is a place where the most famous black emperor came. His name is Menelik II. He is the one who defeated the Italian colonialists at various battles. The most famous of those battles is the Battle of Adwa which took place in 1896. Menelik was a very kind, religious at the same time warrior leader. European colonialists wrote about him with admiration, others who were envious of his victories wrote very negative fake stories in which the colonizers presented Emperor Menelik as some kind hateful and evil person towards some tribes. Educated members of the 1960s Ethiopians read these fake colonizers stories and they believed them, and they become very violent and murderous tribalists. That is one of the main source of the conflict in present day Ethiopia

Al Jazeera I thought this is one many negative reporting's, filled with lies and propaganda and before skipping it I paused the clip and started to read the comment sections which were mainly positive, then played the clip and watch it all. Honestly this is one of the most beautiful short documentary I have watched in a while. The producer of this short clip Girum Berehanetesehay deserves a recognition for this excellent production!
