Watching this after the Alcaraz/Novak French Open and semi and realising how hard it is for a young guy to beat a legend makes me appreciate just how good Novak is here. Firstly, while Fed may have been compromised due to illness, he was still playing to an incredible level (look at the cleanliness of his hitting) and Novak nervelessly downed him in straights. Second, look how all court his game is - at 00:28 and 15-30 down he's charging in to the net already. Shouldn't be surprising for a guy who idolises Sampras and grew up in the 90s but such a contrast to his hattrick of AOs 2011-2013 where he stubbornly beat everyone from the back of the court

So many what-ifs in the comments. These champions are the best the sport has to offer. Both of them. Federer is the most beautiful sportsman I’ve ever seen. His game spoiled us. 2008 was the beginning of the end for Federer, despite reaching all GS finals the following year. The first major tactical fail despite being the better player until 5th set. Note: at the time of that loss he had recently turned 28, but the great Grandpa narrative for delusional fans had just been started. Nadal and Djokovic (mainly them but others, too) by then had found a way to dismantle his excellent serve, even on his beloved fast courts like AO and Wimbledon. he was not used to fight hard for every service game for a whole match. Sure he was able to win longer exchanges, too. But not that constantly as the other 2. In reverse, his own return game was not good enough, even though we're talking about Nadal and Djokovic, both slightly above average servers. Though since 8-10 years Djokovic has become one of the best servers in the game.
2008 was the year that AO became a faster hard court than the US open after the switch from a Rebound Ace surface to Plexicushion Plastic. It is therefore no coincidence that Novak's insane dominance of this event began that year.

Of the top 3 players of the decade, Federer is the most mentally weak one, but I think it's been his weak physicality that breaks him down mentally. Nadal and Joka pride themselves in being physically tough to beat while Fed tries to be cute like a female.

Roger Federer's style play looks so great to watch. But, Federer could not generate extra pace to hit the ball straight & win a point when Djokovic was playing cross court ground strokes.
