EDIT: people on there will post up high resolution photos of old, in depth, magazine interviews with Linkin Park from over the years, I mean, there’s so much AMAZING stuff on there.
I think it will come out in 2027, when LP releases MTM 20th Anniversary Edition with all the unreleased as well as demo tracks, and recordings from their live performances as well.
The back and forth between screaming, fry screaming and clean singing just floors me. How he can go from one to the next and back so seemlessly. He really was an incredible vocalist.
@@josephharbin9310Howard Jones from Killswitch Engage is also up there for me. Bro does some of the best clean screams I’ve ever heard, then sings clean opera vocals in the same song, it’s crazy!
wow, this vocal performance is insane. I love chester but this might be one of his best performances. At least if we talk about technical complexity and execution. Fast, extreme rapping, then totally clean singing without a break to breath? how? Thanks for this discovery and also analysis. I don't know how he even kept this up. I'm struggling with fatique (I'm pushing a lot and my diaphragm gets tired quickly) and wonder how did he have the breath and stamina to do all this. Especially since he looks VERY tense.
he's not using that much air, but his also not over compressing. it helps to think about how long you have to hold a note and using atleast 50% of your air during that note. this way you don't need to tire out your diaphragm every time and can 'cheat' a bit a the cost of more air. but yeah you need those muscles as well, that'll sort itself out though with practice. also make sure to always have air left, your body still needs oxygen and when it runs out you'll need a bit of time to get your full capacity back. so take breathing time into consideration as well.
What makes you incredible, is that you, unlike many teachers I had, make it so understandible by first making a fool out of yourself with the primal noises... but these are easy for us to understand and mimic... making sure we know we are on the right track (or not). Amazing work!
Chris Liepe is the best extreme vocals teacher but if you're interested in just mixed voice check out Tyler Wysong. He's similar in that he does silly things to activate the right muscles, like sticking fingers in his mouth, blocking his nose, etc... and it absolutely works!
This version of QWERTY was one of may favourite songs of my teen years and we used to listen to it all the time with my friend on my crappy phone speaker haha! Brings back memories. Chester's screaming is almost unbelievable in this version. Thanks for covering it, what a nice surprise!
Chester was totally unique. I loved him and Mike as a duo. They're so different but they worked so well together. Loved your analysis. This performance was amazing.
Chester lowkey got my into screamo but in a slower dosage. I loved their sound and when he screamed on songs…you felt that shit in your soul. I’ll always remember where I was and what I was doing when I found out of his death
YEEEEEESSSSS I HEARD IT! Honestly I got teary and celebrated with you when you got the "lies" the same way as Chester! Deffinately the best learning content on here! Thank you so much for sharing all these great insight!!
QWERTY is one of my favorite song done live (never heard it in person though) because Chester going from screams to clean singing is so fucking perfect
That scream at the very end is soo him. So iconic. It's almost like a tidal wave where you feel it before it even hits you and it sounds massive. It's very strange and hard to describe actually. What's interesting to me about his screams is that it's not abrasive but still very smooth and musical. It's almost like a guitar amp cranked up. I always hear people pointing out that he did fry screaming as if it was something to look down on but I heard Chester warming up backstage once and I can tell you that none of the screaming was some quite fry screaming. Like the long notes he holds on the screams might sound to you as a fry scream cuz his saturation is so smooth, but to me that sound was a full-on loud screaming my lungs out kinda stuff. His vocal stamina was extraterrestrial to me.
7:58 the magic moment when you are working on a new sound and you hit it! you still don't know how you hit it exactly, but you're close and you proved to yourself that you CAN do it😄I love that feeling!
Hey Chris! I've recently begun listening to Chester's "project band" called Dead by Sunrise. He experiments sound and technique with this band that he wasnt comfortable releasing with Linkin Park and they released one album. I recommend giving some of the songs from this project band a listen and/or reaction sometime! "Walking in Circles" really puts his transitions from clean to distorted on display quite well
I love that you share the same fascination for Chester's Voice like me. And I gotta say you did not only teach us a lot but you also developed your voice impressingly.
When you said a song about switching a lot between clean and scream i instantly knew it was qwerty.. such an incredible song, also the first time they performed it live, so even more respect for chester
What a fantastic discovery! So great to see you developing your own understanding as you continue you through your heavy vocals journey (it helps that Sing Together Students get to benefit from this new wisdom too)!
Oh shit you broke out QWERTY!! Always loved the energy and vocal style in this song. Never understood why they kept it in the LP underground vault as a B-side. Song slaps so hard! Great breakdown as always Chris 🤘🏻
I thought I remembered seeing an interview a long time ago, that they knew it'd be a setlist favorite. And I believe in 08 minutes to minute came out which was supposed to match One Step Closer/Qwertys energy and was I guess more suitable for everyday performance
I love seeing you work. The passion you show for music, learning and teaching is the reason I've followed you for so long. I hope that passion keeps burning bright for years and years.
The thing I love most about his screams is that he sometimes adds vibrato to it. Figure 09 being one of the songs where he does it in the chorus. He usually does it at the end of belting out the last word in the sentences in his chorus. It's also in Lost where he screams lost. Or in fighting myself when he screams the word apart.
Yes. This is what I was talking about with all that "fry screaming etc." on Chester. The "gag motion" is more like it. You are closer to getting it. I find that there is more gag than what you are doing right now. The gag has the "wet distortion" in Chester's scream. I personally use the gag motion a lot, i refer to it as "false fold fry sound" or if I were to add much more support a "(false fold) fry scream". I believe and also you now i suppose, it is what Chester does. Just more voice in it. Love this content.
This is the video that i been waiting for so long, you are the best professor eve bro, i hope more from serj tankian in his early days, his scream sounds like he was broken his throat would tear apart. The song toxicity, in particular, has a scream at the end that I don't understand how it can be done without breaking up.

Hey Chris! Fellow Chester's powerhouse screaming enthusiast here 😅 Just like you, I'm also very passionate about this subject, the raw emotion projected on those screams was just so insane and cool, I too have been trying to achieve something similar just out of pure enjoyment and appreciation. If you want to check my approach, I haven't covered QWERTY yet but songs like Figure 09 and Lost in the Echo should be good examples. Thank you for your many helpful insights on all the singing/screaming stuff, you're great 🙌
yeah that's one of the most legendary live recordings. I remember back in the day when this song wasn't released and this was for a long time the only version available. an awesome performance that I appreciate even more all these years later
the way Chester screams low and high combining together. i was blown away by his vocals. i tried to do the same technique years ago until now. Even the transition between screams and sings on the chorus was the hardest part (For example: A Place For My Head before the last Chorus, and Forgotten at the bridge). I loved QWERTY when i discovered this last year. it was amazing and energetic, and heavy. i hope this song should appear on MtM20 almost 3 years from now.
I havent heard this song before but its so interesting to hear how you break the voice down. The back and forth between the clean singing and screams is so impressive.
These analyses on Chester are incredible, and they’re my favorites 🥳🤝 I love love LOVE that you continue to update your model the more you unearth and come into! Thank you! 🤝🙌
Chris, I read in an interview a long time ago that Chester's idol was Sebastian Bach. I can hear a lot of that in Chester's voice in a wide array of his songs. Would you consider doing a video that really analyzes Sebastian's voice, and your take on what he's doing? Quicksand Jesus, Slave To the Grind, Wasted Time, and I Remember You would all be great songs to dig into. His melodies were acrobatic, and the different types and levels of grit and distortion are pretty epic; not to mention his range. Thanks man. Love your channel.
I have been obsessed with how he produced these sounds recently... such a puzzle and I've appreciated your videos... I always wonder how much of his sounds are digitally generated but there is definitely incredible talent involved.
This is really wonderful of you Chris. Having Chrster as role model, and sharing new perspectives on his techniques are unique. Thanks alot. QWERTY is insane💯💯

I haven't heard this song in years but I can't recall hearing it as a live version. I could be wrong but I have a feeling this is a demo to the track that was essentially a demo. Great performance as always but the track I remember, there seemed to be a lot more confidence in the performance especially from Chester, even if it wasn't as vocally technical. A damn brilliant song in any regard and in the end, sounded like he voiced the wntire band being pissed off just by his vocal presence
I am amazed at how you've improved so much considering you were amazing before too, your understanding of these scream techniques is honestly so impressive. I wonder if youre gonna do a full blown "fry scream" episode anytime soon, kind of like the technique we hear in Lamb of God or Death? I tried so hard to get that scream to work but I still havent quite gotten it.
Also a follow up question if you see this, do you do discounts on your paid courses for people who live in countries with shit economies? Dollars can be very expensive outside of the US...
No clue why this wasnt in my subscription tab but I am here now! Querty is such a hard song to sing I love Linkin Park and I Love singing (certain ones i hust cant sing because its either too high or the feeling it leaves behind 😔) Linkin Park... And I have a hard time doing this song because of all the clean, scream, clean scream, clean scream kinda stuff going on! Gaaah we lost a great one🥺 RIP to the late... the GREAT... Chester Bennington
One thing that it's always felt like Chester has done, solely based on how the sound feels like it should sound (if that makes sense), it sometimes sounds nasally in the sense that the sound is placed behind the tongue, like you're trying to push it out your nose but you're keeping the nasal passage blocked. So basically you're trying to sing it out your nose but blocking that off, giving it this unique kind of sound when doing screams. I've only ever noticed this in live performances, I've never heard it on a record. There's a live performance of Points of Authority out there somewhere, which I got a burned copy of way back in the day that had a clear example of this at the end of the song, where he screams "Why, mother f*cker" but I haven't found a video for it yet. I've usually done this with a fry scream myself and it still sounds pretty cool. I still can't do the techniques you've been showing but I have to wonder how it sounds, if it's even possible.
Chester was a vocal God. Gone way too soon. Another great vocalist we lost is Matt Holt from nothingface, he had SUCH a powerful voice, brutally beautiful and worth checking out if you haven't. Chester, Matt (Nothingface) and Cameron (American Head Charge) had some of THE most dynamic, unique and all out bad ass voices I've ever heard.
A vocalist with a similar sound to Chester I'd say is Andrew Neufeld from Comeback Kid. A pretty good example song would be "Didn't Even Mind" from their album Die Knowing. I'd like to your take on how he does it.
there is one thing i’ve been thinking bout the more i hear chester scream: He’s a Tenor and the color of his speaking and singing voice is very bright so if he screams and projects a low scream with his voice type there are more highs in it and it sounds brighter than a baritone (for example corey) and more full only because of the color of his voice:)
(I translate through a translator) I think I understand correctly how it’s done, now I want to explain how I understood it. on weak sounds you can add arytenoid cartilages, screaming is obtained on weak notes, we add to this a slight tension as in fry scream, and together this sound should give this sound. air through the arytenoid cartilages + fry scream + regular Chester note
I also noticed that you focus on the "scream" technique. So, we have a musician who adds pressure and splitting and gets a very beautiful sound “three days of rain - auto-aggression” Listen
Hey man, love your videos! I just wanted to ask if you wouldn't mind checking out/ doing more of a deep dive in Shaun Morgan's voice from seether ? I love his rasp and really would like to learn how to get that sound. I love the song "Pass Slowly" cause of his range in it but in the song "Like Suicide" he does some screams which are super impressive! Thanks!
The producer of their first album; Hybrid Theory said that when Chester screams he has 2 or 3 different voices at the same time and how incredible and unusual it is.
Have you Checked out their secret song called Blackbirds? If not, you should listen to it. Goosbumpa all around! Edit: About Coery Taylor, if you wanna hear his attempt of Chester's technique in that song (Qwerty) check out Corey's song Post traumatic Blues from his album CMF2
Man I’ve been trying to get my low screams to get lower and have made maybe a half step or whole step deeper in like 6 yrs 😭 also “breeeees”… I’ve watched countless videos on brees/banshee screams and for the life of me can’t figure it out. Got tunnels for days but the bree is ever elusive.
I went ahead signed up for your courses as well as requested to join your fb group would love to share my vocal covers with you from a music app been studying your vids for almost a year and have majorly improved with Chester's touch on vocalizing myself ❤thank u so much for this
When Chris said, "Now I wanna take you back to a particular LP song with a lot of clean singing, dirty singing and, all out screaming", I already knew right ahead that it's gonna be Qwerty😂😂😂😂😂 Like the first song that fits the three description Chris mentioned for me is exactly Qwerty itself HAHA Good way to describe such a majestic song ❤❤... I'm glad my brain was prepared for it to be Qwerty or at least I'm glad I expected it😂😂
Its like he doubles his vocals in his own throat. One clean take with pitch, then a screaming distortion take. Its crazy. Also, to me, when he sings normally it sounds like hes singing out of his nose.

Anything showcasing Chester's unique talent is awesome! Love how the teaching of it sounds similar to Adam Sandler lol
10:12 you sounded just like Serj, now we need you to do a chop suey cover
My neighbors think i'm taking the gnarliest dump rn
Chester was a vocal God. Gone way too soon. Another great vocalist we lost is Matt Holt from nothingface, he had SUCH a powerful voice, brutally beautiful and worth checking out if you haven't.
Chester, Matt (Nothingface) and Cameron (American Head Charge) had some of THE most dynamic, unique and all out bad ass voices I've ever heard.
First time i watched linkin park live at Manchester 2001 i knew this was a special band.
Yeah, Don Gilmore said that in the Making Of Meteora video
Yes, easily 3-4 overtones, I bet if you ran his voice through a spectrometer we’d see it
Have you Checked out their secret song called Blackbirds? If not, you should listen to it. Goosbumpa all around!
Edit: About Coery Taylor, if you wanna hear his attempt of Chester's technique in that song (Qwerty) check out Corey's song Post traumatic Blues from his album CMF2
Man I’ve been trying to get my low screams to get lower and have made maybe a half step or whole step deeper in like 6 yrs 😭 also “breeeees”… I’ve watched countless videos on brees/banshee screams and for the life of me can’t figure it out. Got tunnels for days but the bree is ever elusive.
Whatt????! I've have been doing this type of scream without knowing!!!!! Is way more flexible to experiment and sustain than the usual fry 😮
Amazing video as always Chris!!! Have you checked out The Home Team before? Their singer is so insane and has such a good energy when singing!
We need to get Elizabeth to check out this song!
I went ahead signed up for your courses as well as requested to join your fb group would love to share my vocal covers with you from a music app been studying your vids for almost a year and have majorly improved with Chester's touch on vocalizing myself ❤thank u so much for this
When Chris said, "Now I wanna take you back to a particular LP song with a lot of clean singing, dirty singing and, all out screaming", I already knew right ahead that it's gonna be Qwerty😂😂😂😂😂
Like the first song that fits the three description Chris mentioned for me is exactly Qwerty itself HAHA
Good way to describe such a majestic song ❤❤...
Yes!! Fizz is his difference.
He's so amazing. Wish he was still around.:( Check out Chino Moreno!
I've done several videos on Chino! one of my favorite vocalists!!
@@chrisliepe oh sorry!
no prob! hope you get a chance to check out the videos !! :) @@lisalegato0109
Hi Chris - you must listen to Corvyx's tribute to Chester, acoustic of The messenger, it's so good.
Of course you would pick qwerty lol. Such a great song even better live. Great video Chris.
