Hi Mark, thank you very much!!! I'll give it a try soon and will post the pictures.
Cheers,
Tom
Awesome, we can't wait to see!
Nice!
When metals become too work hardened or brittle by hammering or compression through a rolling mill or draw plate, then annealing them with heat will make them more malleable and ductile.
How do you make a lip around the ring?
Dear Mark,
Is there a table of some sort from which I can determine the outer and inner diameter of the washer based on the desired ring size?
Best regards,
Tom
Hi Tom. here are the notes i made when i started the project. You can find similar information if you search for information on how to make coin rings. Those makers follow a very similar process. In fact Rio will soon be carrying tools made specifically for making coin rings very soon.
Here are my notes. Hope they are of some help.
Steps
Determine the size the ring
The size of the ring is determined primarily by the outside diameter of the washer. A 1” diameter typically produces around a size 8-9. Although it is rather easy to make the ring larger because we are stretching the metal, making the ring a smaller size is more difficult. It is recommended to practice with copper or brass to determine what diameter will produce what size. Below is a chart we came up with. All sizes are approximate.
Sizes
OD ID Size Width
.875” (22.22mm) .5” (12.7mm) 6 4.8mm
.750” (19.05mm) .5” (12.7mm) 4 3.75mm
.875” (22.22mm) .625” (15.87mm) 8 3.5mm
1” (25.4mm) .625” (15.87mm) 9.75 5mm
1” (25.4mm) .5” (12.7mm) 8 6.2mm
Me gustaria tener esta maquina por fabor informar donde la puedo adquirir y cunto vale, pues quisiera hacer algunos de estos trabajos.

Do you have a tutorial on how to do the actual Mokumé Gane
Hi Julie, Thanks so much for asking. In the past we have taught classes at Rio about this process, and you probably know that we sell Mokume Gane Billet Rod (item #103515). Although there are no classes on the current schedule, you may be interested in this video teaching the process: www.riogrande.com/product/mokume-gane-in-the-small-shop-dvd/560403 Hope this helps!!
what kind of solder can I use on a Mokume Gane disk ring? To add a bezel cup.
Hi Logan, Thanks for watching. The Rio Grande Jewelry Tech Team recommends an easy silver solder for this job. You may be abel to use medium solder, but be careful not to overheat the work, as this will be getting close to the melting point on the metals. Hope this helps!
Additionally, if the mokume you're working with has any stainless steel in it, we recommend the Handy B1 flux found here, www.riogrande.com/product/handy-flux-type-b-1-for-stainless-steel-and-nickel-silver/504088
use sliver solder
What for making bezel cup setting
Close your eyes, ignore the hammering and use your imagination... :?
Now we're really stretching it out hard. Watch the fingers there. Yeah it does hurt. Actual dialog from the video. I know its a bit childish but I couldn't not mention it and sleep tonight.

That's what she said.
