    Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you !
    I followed your advices and managed to forge my first Cu-mai (1095-Cu-15n20-1095-15n20-Cu-1095).
    It's a partial succes because I had difficulties to weld the outer layers of 1095. But I have a smal part I can use to do a blade.
    I know I didn't take the easy way, begining forging by a Cu'mai. It mas a challenge to myself.

    Holie krap,wow,I am so fascinated by Cu-Mai and this just made it so much easier,just wanted to say that is not forge welding heat,copper melts at that temperature,that's why you can't put 2 layers of different steel on each other,truly amazing work and I can't wait for the final project,also wanted to ask if you can try a Cu-Mai katana,don't know how it will be done but it will look amazing,love the video

    Man you are braver than I am! I am afraid being in the forge for that long that I would accidentally over heat it and melt the copper into a puddle in the forge. Thats why I welded all the way around mine before forging it. That was super cool man!

      It was definitely sketchy lol. The full knife billet is the tricky part, 13 layers of copper and 15n20 only held together by bailing wire.

    3 attempts later and I am still struggling to get a full billet. My first attempt was two layers of 15n20 with a sheet of copper inside (which worked in a small part, but most delaminated), but watching again, it looks like you are doing copper on outside and 15n20 in the middle? - I trioed that as well and only got a small section to fuse... cut the pieces up and stacked and tried again, and still one de-lam between a layer of copper and 15n20. - How thick are the pieces of copper you are using? I just flattened out some pieces of copper pipe, so maybe being that thin is making it more difficult? Either way, I am determined to get it down, but think it is going to be a lot of trial and error, so any advice is highly welcomed.

    I have used baling wire on my mokume also, works well. Nice to see a less complicated process to make the billet; seems like most folks end up welding sheet metal around the billet, which doesn't seem necessary per your technique.

    This was awesome to see, been improving my technique with mokume gane using quarters. and getting ready to first start with my first san mai billet and want to progress to cu mai with copper. You are not using any flux in your welding with the bailing wire?

    • @theriversexperience9383
      @theriversexperience9383  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, no flux. When doing CuMai you are basically brazing the pieces together. The copper acts as the binding agent.

    If you don’t mind my asking how thick of copper were you using and did you put a piece on each side of the steal? And for the final you just added a piece of 15N20 in the center correct? Just want to give this a try. Thank you in advance.

      The copper is 1/16" thick. This was 4 layers of copper and 3 layers of 15n20.
