  • The idea behind the Knucklebuster project was to illustrate how you can take a later-model vehicle from the 70’s or 80’s and turn it into a cool vehicle you can drive every day without spending a fortune. Since these vehicles aren’t that old, they are relatively easy to find and not terribly expensive. They also don’t usually require extensive rust replacement and expensive frame-off restorations that take months or years and a lot of money to do. Another plus is the fact they already have huge aftermarket support, so replacement parts are easy to find and usually very affordable, making them a perfect first project to tackle.

      If it’s just surface rust all the better. But that truck here in Texas is at least 5 k if it’s got a good title. A thousand less for no title. Junk with a good title is a grand all by its self. Pretty rough if your a young guy with no money. I never owned a car that I paid 1k till I was almost 40 - why waste the money on something I could fix. I bought my first new one when I could pay cash for it. Should have stuck with an older Honda.

    First off at some point this cheap rebuild turned into a complete free-for-all advertisement $75,000 truck. Two these shows are so incredibly misleading for people that would like to get into this that haven't worked on things some examples are, how did he fill the hole in the transmission tunnel when he went back to column shift? Exactly how long did it take to get those shackle bolts out of the rear leaf springs or did you end up using a torch like you're going to need to 90% of the time. How about the lunch box Locker he put in the rear end did they explain that those things click every time you go around a corner on the street and our annoyingly loud?

      Not to mention they get sponsored parts half the time, and if not, have a TV show budget, as well as a crew off camera doing the work.
      That being said, it is inspiring to see nice vehicles, built in a month. If it takes 10 years, you "can" do it yourself. Yeah, there are a lot of details that go unaddressed on TV, but that's just how these shows are.
      Once you've done a few builds, you know exactly what it takes, but for a first time build, you will find it costs at least 30% more time and money than you assume it would.

    • @jameskirk3
      @jameskirk3 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      To me it comes down to return on investment. I do agree that it is better to just take off the control arms, spindles, and brakes. (Aswell as pull the engine and empty MOST of the engine bay. Harder to dance around it than to yank it out and paint the engine bay black) Just assume those are trashed from the get go. On a 50 year old truck, I assume the master cylinder down is trashed. Stainless brake lime set, a new master cylinder, new calipers and rotors/pads/soft lines are a great investment. The stock parts work, and can be had for about $1200-1500.
      Lowering the truck with aftermarket control arms and spindles when this aired would've run about $3k for decent parts. The brakes would be about $2-3k as well.
      That being said, lowering springs aren't that much. They're less than a grand. Stock brakes, all new, and budget lowering springs for $2500 is a win when the truck is worth $25k after paint, interior, and chassis work. A $2k LS swap and you're in the money.
      Cheap rims and tires aren't impossible to find used. If you spend $15k and sell it for $25k the same year and working your spare time, you're doing alright. .
      The truck he's built would be over $50k, and out of my budget.

  • @casualobserver620
    @casualobserver620 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This project starts off as a low budget built, but quickly breaks the bank with a crate engine with shinny accessories and dress up kits. No engine has ever performed better just because it has aftermarket valve covers that were painted.
    But to indicate those steering parts are hard to find while plugging LMC????
    People should know that LMC sells too much cheap Chinese parts, like these front end parts and makes YOU pay for shipping on returned parts because LMC makes YOU pick the parts, they only sell what YOU chose.
    By the way, ALL of those front are parts are readily available at any parts store. Just ask for MOOG quality parts.
    By the way, that BRAND NEW power steering box is a rebuilt, looks to be a Saginaw unit, not BRAND NEW. And make extra sure the rag joint on the steering box is in really good shape. Try to stay away from the universal fit-alls and get a O.E.M. style.
    By the way....while a painted transmission may look good sitting on the table, it is NOT wise to paint it. Heat escapes through aluminum and paint seals the aluminum causing the unit to retain heat. Remember, dirt and heat are the 2 biggest enemies of a transmission. If you must paint something that cannot be seen, install a deeper pan with a much larger fluid cooler.
    Oh, contraire.....the reason you see classic vehicles on the side of the road on fire is because of the aftermarket fuel filters people use. They will cut the steel fuel line and add a fuel filter that uses hose clamps. A clamp will work loose and spray gasoline on a running engine. ****POOF*****
    Vehicle fire. If you want to add a fuel filter, install it on the vacuum side of the fuel pump. If the clamps work loose, it will just suck air. AND INVEST IN A DECENT FIRE EXTINGUISHER.

    I miss watching this on the Speed Channel. Last year I did a little trading and acquired a 1977 F150 Ranger XLT 4 speed 4x4 all Factory conditioned. Little surface rust here and there some patina. Arizona desert truck. Geared really low. 351 M400 engine I'm told it's basically a stroker Cleveland engine. It's definitely a tractor engine. It had been sitting for 8 years after changing all the fluids and flushing out the tanks it fired right up. I'm loving driving this thing around but still looking for a deuce and a half.

    Well i know I'm not going to win any fan's with me following comments. I'm ok with that. Stacey please forgive the spelling if incorrect. You completely ruined the original value of that truck! And i have never been a fan of aluminum rim's. I'm guessing the old rim's were real crome. They would be more strong. I don't know many average people that can afford 40k on a rebuild like this. You took a daily driver and make a show truck. If thats what was wanted. Then should have took her down all the way. For a frame off restoration. The paint on the truck before was beautiful. As far as handling. Trucks were never meant to be sports car like. They were built for work! Plus putting on the bigger wheel's and tire's just screwed up the accuracy of the speedometer. I would have gladly taken the truck the way it was color and all. Fixed it where needed and rolled with it. Saving 30k or more. Even with engine overhaul and transmission overhaul. I disagree that when you was done about the truck being family friendly to fancy. My father God rest his soul bought a New 1977 Chevy Scottsdale 4x4 3 on the tree. 350 engine. Don't get me wrong folk's. If this is what you want to do to your daily driver. Knock yourself out. But im old school. When old school wasn't cool. Take it easy Everybody.

    • @OfficialStaceyDavid
      @OfficialStaceyDavid  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The truck had already been modified quite a bit, so I don't think there was a lot of original value left in it. Cragar Wheels are great wheels, but they are cast. The Billet Specialties wheels that went on are probably way stronger. Nothing wrong with keeping it old school, but that wasn't the direction of this build.

    After I bought my 2003 GMC 13 months later I had a 3”x5” drop. At that time I added a sway bar to the rear end and replaced the stock front bar with a Hotchkiss sway bar. After this I tried a 35 mph corner at 60 and boy did the sway bars make a difference. Months later I did slotted and grooved docs front and rear. What a stopping difference. I also used performance pads. I estimated about a 30% better stopping power. I didn’t do the other stuff you did because the truck barely had 1000 miles on it. The next year the shows that I entered I got 70% win. I’m not chasing trophies but the recognition for my money and effort was worthwhile.

    • @brucewrandol
      @brucewrandol ปีที่แล้ว

      I also used a stock spring rate spring with a 1” shorter spring. Thus I ended up with a 4”x5” drop. This was only a start for my $60,000 investment.
      One thing to remember is that you will not recover your total investment when sell your pride and joy. How do I know my $60,000 investment sold for $15,000. I had fun and all of this took place over a 10 year period.

    Wtf! ... I watched all of this and couldn't see or hear it in action after?? ... bummer. Obviously that owner's budget was a lot more than most guys because I'm sure all of that cost him a small fortune minus some goodies from sponsors. Why not put a new ventilation panel/controls for the A/C it never had? After all you did install a whole new interior except for that. Without trying to be a d!ck, but ... Why didn't you do all that dirty/nasty dash work before the new carpet? Nice "budget" build ... if you have a heavier wallet than most, lol.
