I listened to the World Service a lot during the 1980s. Interesting how the domestic BBC continuously hammered the South African regime to the exclusion of every other country with dodgy human rights. Interesting to find the World Service was balanced. Regimes in south and central America plus other African countries receiving equal air time.

There's another reply to your comment that guesses at £5 a letter. My guess would be more like 5p a letter. Do you know how much 5p X millions of letters adds up to? Good vid Jon. Three things.
If the World Service has strategic importance, it seems a fairer way to fund it would be from via the FCDO. (Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office). They would in turn have to receive a budget increase to facilitate this.
However, this would be fairer as the bill wouldn’t be footed by only the TV Licence payers.
Additionally, if the FCDO were setting their budget, they would potentially have the power to ensure that the World Service production and output would be aligned with their objectives. The World Service objectives will likely already be driven by the FCDO, but by the time the costs to meet these objectives go through the BBC corporate machine, there is likely fat added to both output and overheads. This way it would have to stay within budget.
With that in mind, would it potentially be worth considering splitting the World Service away from the BBC, kind of like BBC Studios has been?

It is time the BBC moved into the 21st century and stopped all this nonsensical way of operating. Mind you quite how much of this is down to the BBC as opposed to the government itself is debatable. How can a TV company have so much political power without full government support? Makes you think. Its not a TV licence. Its a tax!!

Many do not and all they have is what is sent across the air waves. If I'd not cancelled my TV licence (some time ago now, thankfully), the part I would least begrudge is that which would go to the BBC World Service (about £15 per annum in today's terms). For some people, in some countries, Russia, China and Iran, for example, which means billions of them, the only broadcast information they receive is that put out by their own governments much of which, especially in those countries mentioned, will be lies and propaganda. At least, with the BBC World Service, they may get an alternative view on things, especially if the people speaking to them (310 of them, apparently) have been forced to live in exile from those countries.

If you watch The BBC News Channel in The UK, you would be forgiven for thinking that this Channel is a BBC World Service Outlet, since we get very little in the way of any rolling UK Home grown News on this so-called BBC News Channel.
I have been listening more to The Sky News Channel which is not Top-Heavy with Foreign News items as their main go-too.
