Note: the audiobook version of "Children of Hurin" (which is the book where this story is told in full) is narrated by Christopher Lee (aka Sarumon), and it is awesome.
Personally, my favorite tale from Tolkien. So mature, dark and tragic. Túrin is by far the most complex and well developed character. I've read it so many times and still get the chills every damn time.
Nah, Shakespeare always has a morale that is applicable to human society of his time. This is more of a greek tragedy in the same vein as Oedipus. These stories are most of the time "Don't mess with the gods (unless you have some gods on your side, too)"
The story of Turin is based on the tale of Kullervo in the Finnish epic poem Kalevala, a conscious decision by Tolkien who borrowed a lot of elements from Finnish stories for his mythos and made the Elvish languages based partly on Finnish.
Most of GOT "tragedy" is just shock value and can never compete with Tolkien poetic brilliance and prose. 40 year's from now GOT will be largely forgotten but Tolkien won't
@@brooksboy78 are you stupid? its not about emotional weight, its about "poetic brilliance and prose" as stated up there. Those are objective, not subjective, its not about emotion, its about better writting, simple as that.
Glaurung didn’t trick him into incest. What happened was that glaurung erased neinor’s memory so she couldn’t tell turin who she was when they met and Turin had never met her before that
So Turin will return at Dagor Dagorath, the battle before the ultimate happy ending. I guess Turin will have a happy ending but that would be long after the events of "The Lord of the Rings".
SnailGuy it would be good. For a part. But you can't have a movie like that. Or it will be 10 times worse than the hobbit. And it is also less child friendly. Which means less profit. So i'd say no, hopefully not.
This book gives me a deeper understanding of the subtleties in Middle-Earth, like the relationship between Men and Elves, and the presence of orc and Easterling conquest in the history of the West.
Such a sad, amazing story. Thank you for breaking it down for us. I read The Silmarillion years ago and remember bits and pieces but you really help put it together.
I just thought I'd mention, because you said it was an original story at the end of the video, it was actually based on a finnish tale in the Kalevala. Tolkien did his version own of the story, and it was published recently in the book called The Story of Kullervo.
I think my voice slurred a bit because I am still recovering from a cold, but I said it wasn't an original story, even at the time. If you see the description, I mention the same thing.
Oh yeah I just listened to it again and you said "isn't" not "is", must have misheard. Great videos by the way, I have enjoyed sitting here shouting out the name of the characters that you breeze over lol. I know you said that you didn't want to overload the videos with lots of names but I still had my fun.
That's what I thought too at first. But yeah, like someone else said, the chances of the Finns and Greeks exchange stories might be minimal. The story reminded me of Oldboy too. In which the manga, it was adapted from was a loose adaptation of Oedipus.
Turin is the greatest......He bore a curse from the Dark God......even though many around him suffered.....he strove against all odds to kill the first dragon.
actually i can see a lot of greek tragedy traits on this tale, which makes a lot of sense since tolkien wanted to write an epic story like the old greek ones but with germanic/norse mythology
The Narn I Hin Hurin- The tale of the children of Hurin, is heart-breaking. From the moment he defies Morgoth and because he know's the location of Gondolin, Hurin and his family become caught in the malice of a plan to reveal it's location. His wife, his son and daughter pay an awful price, and the devising of Hurin's torment and the curse on his family is for sure one of the worst works of Morgoth. Even though it's unwritten and not described, Morgoth has it coming and deserves his end from the black sword Gurthang and Turin in the Dagor. Without doubt the darkest chapters in all of Tolkien's works..
Camel Dude420 He was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford and was extremely well versed in Old English, Norse, Swedish and Finnish works. I read a theory somewhere that his character Tom Bombadil was based on a Finnish god (or spirit) of nature.
Also kind of like the Greek one(ugh, can't think of the name) were the son unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother, only here he unknowingly marries his sister. I can't remember the rest but he basically bounces from one tragic situation to the next.
TheLoyalOfficer absolutely, there is a lot of overlapping themes in both, and tolken did get inspiration from a lot of different tales, legends and myths. The reason it's more likely is because Finnish was Tolkien's favorite language and he was a fan of the epic
The reason Tinuviel threw herself off the cliff was because she realized that she was pregnent with Turins Child, after Turnin killed himself, His father Hurin was released by Morgoth. Hurin was bitter after all that had happened and eventually found his wife resting at her sons gravesite, She died in Hurins arms, then Hurin died as well. This is such a sad torturous story, and perhaps the best story in the Silmarillion. It mentions at one point how Turin passes by Beren while traveling but neither know who the other was, even though they were cousins.
Man and I thought the 7th grade sucked. I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy your channel. I haven't read Tolkien in over 35 years, but I might have to pick up his books again. I enjoy your vids on Lovecraft, but I have no idea where to start there. Any suggestions?
Lovecraft did not write a lot of books, mostly short stories so you could just pick up his anthology. as to where to begin I would suggest Dagon, it's not very long and has just enough of the Chtulhu mythos to get you hooked. As for books, you might want to try "The case of Charles Dexter Ward". I am sure it will be in the anthology you picked up.
Turin wasn't a man of honor. The curse was part to blame, however, if you remember Turin's heart was never pure. He wasn't a hero in the tale, but his own tragedy.
what you failed to really depict is Turin's sheer Presence. Like with the destruction of Nargothrond when king Orodreth was killed, the Vala Ulmo, lord of all oceans (imagine a god, but not really), sent a message to Nargothrond telling the king to destroy a bridge that Turin had built, but nobody dared to it because Turin simply rejected the warning. Mind you, many of the elves in the court most likely *met* Ulmo during their time in Valinor, so they knew what authority he and the other Valar had, and yet decided to listen to Turin instead
One of the most sad and tragic stories in all of J. R. R. Tolkiens works,. A great video, I think this would make a nice film in addition to the middle earth saga. But I don't think they would ever give the rights for the commission of the film
Having seen what they did to THE HOBBIT, can you really be serious about that? Imagine it padded out into a trilogy and given a happy ending to please mass audiences. No, let's keep this one out of theaters.
christosvoskresye that actually made me shudder, 😩 I hope I did not wish for that to loudly, with these days political correctness can u imagine what would happen to the storyline!.
What I'd like to see is a GoT-style TV show based on Children of Hurin, with possibly some other Silmarillion stories weaved in (for example, Tuor and the downfall of Gondolin). If properly executed, it could be the best thing ever.
Ooh, yeah! The Children of Hurin stories could be produced by The Jim Henson Company, and it could be expanded and made more kid-friendly by the addition of Fraggles! ;-)
and they all of tolkien's stories are just for children and kids. Well turin had some reall messed up shit its a story for Adult's who love fantasy and the darker themes. Turin's story is good, love to see it animated.
i will mentioan that while the story deeply moved me at the time when i read as a teenager, ten years ago, looking at it again i d see a paralllel to the story of siegmund and sieglinde the wagner's die walkure, however Tolkin is far more detailed and developed. it is not highly unlikely that Tolkin draw inspiration from nordik myth

Gilly8890, Rest In Peace.
YES IT IS AWESOME I JUST FINISHED IT
His reading of the story was just perfect. I wish he was still around to do more because no one could read Tolkien like him.
Saruman*
Tolkien was being especially sunny that day
Not to mention wincest
_A Túrin Turambar turún' ambartanen..._ :)
Definitely one of the best, most adult tales by Tolkien. Perhaps _the_ best.
Yeah is one of the best stories of Tolkien
;_;
Personally, my favorite tale from Tolkien.

this is some dark shit. wasn't ready for such feels as these.

Nah, Shakespeare always has a morale that is applicable to human society of his time. This is more of a greek tragedy in the same vein as Oedipus. These stories are most of the time "Don't mess with the gods (unless you have some gods on your side, too)"

its also in concept or idea by tolkien in 1917.. that explains why the depressing story of his especially
GRRM: “Tolkien didn’t do Sad Endings.”
JRRT: “Hold My Beer.”

So the dragon tricked him in to incest whit he's own sister, is that unusually perverse. Did not see that coming.
Commanded by Morgoth, til I still don't understand HOW
xD
Glaurung didn’t trick him into incest. What happened was that glaurung erased neinor’s memory so she couldn’t tell turin who she was when they met and Turin had never met her before that
Lol this guy is just constantly having those hands on head moments. I also like how after he fucks up he just moves and changes his name

SnailGuy a depressing movie
Michiel Kroese maybe a mini series?
Hollywood isn't likely to touch anything where the protagonist kills himself in the end.
Have you heard of an old cult classic called 'Oldboy'?
Don't stop making middle earth series!
great to see someone keeping these great stories alive:)
jay_ Mac how great
it is a long story but the tragedy that befalls him shows that morgoth is without pity.
doug marcus I like to believe that it is indeed Turin who will give the killing blow to Morgoth
Turin was a great tragic hero. He almost was able to escape Morgoth's curse on him and his family.
This book gives me a deeper understanding of the subtleties in Middle-Earth, like the relationship between Men and Elves, and the presence of orc and Easterling conquest in the history of the West.
Such a sad, amazing story. Thank you for breaking it down for us. I read The Silmarillion years ago and remember bits and pieces but you really help put it together.
what a tragic fate.. his last major quest is to find his family especially his sister but dam! that twist at the end..
my favorite book ever.

Kullervo in turn may have been inspired by Oedipus.
TLR Jon i dont believe so because the story of kullervo is VERY old and i dont think finnish folk and greek folk had any connections

Otherwise known as Túrin and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
The Children of Hurin is the most tragic tale I've had the pleasure of reading.
This has by far been my favorite of all Tolkien's works
Turin suffers humilation for his sin. Oedipus shrugs.
can you do one on tom bombadil?
That will be the last video I do on Middle-Earth, so not too far off.
TheExploringSeries awesome it sounds good!
That's sad to hear :(
TheExploringSeries noooo .dont stop making videos about the lords of the rings
But there's so much else to discuss about Middle-Earth :(
This is the best to the point recap of Turin’s story.
This story was and is something you dont read everyday and is a lot more than chilling..
Surely my favorite Silmarillion tale and the one that left the strongest impression on me.
Proof that Glaurung is the most evil creature in all of Tolkien! So damn awesome!!!
That was very shocking and depressing to hear.
wow feels bad man.
This needs to be a movie
the ending, the cut of sounds is perfect
Betrayal, killing friends, suicide, incest: This is some GoT level shit
I just finished reading this book and I can't stop the flow of my tears. Sooooo sad I can't even describe it
Can u do one on illuvatar
Turin makes Guts from Berserk look like Aragorn
... was not ready for this...
I've read this book, it's quite dark and sad.
Same. I also agree that it is quite dark
He definitely acted rashly at times as did his mother and sister when they tried to reach Nargothrond and were met by Glaurung.
That is some fucked up shit, this needs to be a movie
Nienor kills herself because she doesn't want a child like Joffrey
the history of the guts of the middle earth

Camel Dude420 He was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford and was extremely well versed in Old English, Norse, Swedish and Finnish works. I read a theory somewhere that his character Tom Bombadil was based on a Finnish god (or spirit) of nature.
Turin Turanbar=Kullervo. Period.
Very similar to the Nordic tale of Fafnir the dragon and Siegfried.
Also kind of like the Greek one(ugh, can't think of the name) were the son unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother, only here he unknowingly marries his sister. I can't remember the rest but he basically bounces from one tragic situation to the next.
+David Marquardt You mean Oedipus?
TheLoyalOfficer it is directly inspired by the Finnish epic Kalevala, as Túring share a lot of things with Kullervo

Probably 2 videos from now.
Turin's story, though incomplete, is my favorite Tolkien story.
Best Tolkien tale and one of his best characters along Feanor
the way MIM betrayed them is fucked up
now this should be a movie
The book was awesome
Sounds a bit like the the Oedipus rex. Very cool this!
Túrin Turambar, one of my favourite stories of Middle-Earth and one where I ended up hating Morgoth and understanding why the elves hate him so much.
When I first got into Berserk I kinda thought of this story
Poor Turin, the saddest part is the killing of his friend. Mainly for his friends sake
man I'd love to see this as a movie.
what for? to kill this tale? look what happend with The Lord of the Rings movie it is a total flop compared to the book. but that's just my opinion
If this was GRRM, they wouldn't mind being related.
Sadly true

I remember when I first read this book…
I was like man, talk about bad luck
one of tolkein best stories! follows after the neiblungenleid of ancient German folklore.
You mean the Nibelungenlied.
my favorite Tolkien character and story
And people say that Tolkien writes kids' stories which are all "good will always win"
I remember reading this book quite awhile ago.

I just ordered Dagon off of E Bay. I'll see if there are tentacles in my dreams soon enough.
You forgot to mention the moment when Turin's cousin Tuor ( Son of Huor brother of Turin's dad Hurin) and him cross paths
Tolkien took this story straight from Finnish mytology and adapted it into his universe and i love these both versions.

This could be an opera. The first scene would be the outlaws coming back from a rade and setting the premis up. They won't survive the first act.
This is one of the strangest saddest stories ever.
Gurthang was a cursed sword which said to Turin, "I would gladly take your life".
Thank you for the videos.

well you left out the part which was hard for me.
After Turin kills himself. Hurin was set free by Morgoth and goes to the spot were his children die.
