    Great video, I am an adam audio t7v owner and was really blown away by the sound of these speakers with such a small price tag. Using an rme babyface pro fs for an interface and these with the complimentary t10s sub and decent cables have really upped my engineering game. Thumbs up for anybody considering purchasing these speakers.

    Could you please make a video on the general philosophy of applying:
    - Saturation (and distortion)
    - Compression
    - Songwriting
    - Workflow
    - Stereo Imaging
    - Mastering (what LUFS, RMS, and all that jargon means)
    in the same fashion that you made your "How to Mix" series?
    When you teach, it's STRATEGIES, not just random tips. This is why I appreciate your channel so much. Thank you, sir.

    Great review, thanks! I finally chose the T5V. My room is not that big and I already own a subwoofer which I turn on from time to time to check that the very low end is not overwhelming. Personally, I feel that the detail in the mid range and high end is very important for vocals and most instruments. To avoid muddy mixes, I usually have a low cut filter at 150 Hz for everything except bass (guitar or synth) and drums; in other words, most instruments "live" in a frequency range that a 5 inch speaker can easily handle. Anyway, that was my logic behind my choice. There are no perfect speakers, so compromises are always required.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! :) Sounds like a good approach. Personally I EQ based on what else is on the mix, and how much is in the mix. Some times, if there's very few elements and you have a guitar or a piano for example, then you'd want to leave almost all the low end in there, to make it sound natural. I only cut if I really have to in order to make room for other elements in the mix. I typically also use automation to make sure that I might get more low end from elements in the breakdown for example, where there's very few elements, and then once the drop kicks in I cut more of the low end to make room. Every mix is different and there's no magic setting that works every time with regard to EQ. A subwoofer will definitely help you hear what's going on in the low end, and can be a good tool to control the low end. Most 5" woofers can't reproduce anything below 50-60 hz anyways, so you'd be blind to what's going on there without a subwoofer.: )

    we had T7v in our studio. They sounded great and clear. They just had a little hiss which was annoying. But when the music played you didn't care about the hiss anymore

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      There shouldn't be any hiss. Usually, when there's hiss or noise, it's because of electrical interference from the computer and such, and in some cases even due to ground loop issues. It's important to use good quality balanced XLR cables, and make sure that you keep them away from power lines and such as much as possible. Keeping the monitor itself near a screen or something can in some cases also interfere with the electronics inside, causing hiss or noise.
      If you rule out any of these reasons and the noise is still there, then it's probably a fault with the monitor itself, in which case it should be replaced under warranty. :)

All though they are branded as being for Dj's, it's really a good reference monitor considering the price. I actually used them for quite some time, and found them to be quite accurate. Not as good as the T series from Adam Audio though, but more than good enough for mixing compared to other budget monitors. :)

Figure since these were all affordable (together not even the cost of one barefoot or ATC monitor) might as well have options! We live in spoiled times for monitors.

      Generally you would have to push it right into the wall in order for it to cause severe problems. However, that's not really possible because there will always be cables sticking out, preventing you from doing that. If you keep it 20-30 Centimeters away from the wall then that should generally be good enough. Ideally, I would try to aim for 50 Centimeters, but that's not always possible.

      For a room that size, you should go for the more powerful T8V.

  • @alexdranemusic
    @alexdranemusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I got the T5V since a year now and they are really good monitors for a reasonable and fair price IMO. I was listening to them at Thomann and in comparison to the Rokit and Yamaha Series (which are also quite often used), they sound a little bit more neutral. You can go for them without any doubt, especially in smaller rooms.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are indeed very neutral, and that's the most important thing. When you listen to them for the first time, especially if you compare them to rokits, then your first impression might be that they sound a bit boring in comparison, but that's a good thing. That's what you should be looking for. I always find that the rokits (at least the older generations) have too much power in the low end. The T5V and T7V has a more linear curve, especially in the low end.
      It can be tempting to go for the monitor that makes the music sound better. But that usually means that it's not 100% neutral, just like hifi speakers. When shopping for studio monitors for mixing you want a monitor that sound kind of boring essentially. It should not be artificially amplifying any part of the spectrum. :)

    cool vid again! i would like to see comparing cheap and expensive interfaces and how it matters which one to choose

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome. When it comes to interfaces the main difference boils down to inputs and outputs, preamps and things like that. The actual interface doesn't have anything to do with sound quality, because everything is happening inside the computer, digitally. When you render out the project the quality will be exactly the same regardless of the interface.
      Now, there are some differences in terms of noise etc, but this is usually not detectable by humans, and only affects playback when mixing. Also, the various interfaces usually comes with their own ASIO drivers, and some offer less latency than others, so I would go for one that has the inputs and outputs you need, and which has a low latency asio driver.

    Sorry for posting here as well but you mentioned the 5 inch speaker for smaller rooms. Could you share what you define as a small room. Thanks!

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no exact dimensions to go by. It depends not only on the size, but the shape of the room, (squared, rectangular) and also on what's in the room. Low frequencies, which can be provided by larger woofers will need some more space for the sound waves to propagate properly. If you put a very large monitor inside a very small room you will often end up with a muddy sound, so smaller monitors will be recommended in that case.
      A small room will typically be a small bedroom with one window, with just enough space for the bed, a closet and a small desk.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@accentontheoff A squared room is not ideal. Rectangular rooms are more ideal. Glass in particular is very reflective, so if you have large windows then I would recommend using some heavy curtains to try and dampen the sound a little bit. It will still reflect, but you can't really cover up the windows with acoustic foam either :)

    Since some people are asking hs8 vs t7v. And you claim that t7v has a better mid to high range in clarity.
    While hs 8 has a stronger low end.
    This seems to due to the 7 inches woofer size of the t7v. Thus, I supposed that to get a better lower end, I might better getting a subwoofer for the t7v??
    And one more thing, some people claim that they realized some hissing from t7v (white noise). Did you experience this?
    Thank you for your reply in advanced.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Yes the 7" woofer will provide a "clearer" mid range than an 8" woofer in general, but it's not just that. It's the high end as well. The high end on the T7V is really impressive, too. It has perhaps the most impressive clarity I've heard from any entry level monitor. The HS8 which uses a standard dome tweeter does not sound bad by any means, but after using the T7V's for a while, I definitely felt like the high end from the HS8 was a little bit of a downgrade when it comes to mid and highs.
      The T7V's does not have poor low end by any means. If you compare it to most 5" monitors then it's night and day. They go much lower and provide enough low end for most people. If you go for 5" speakers then a subwoofer will be needed in order to hear anything below 50-60 hz. However, with the T7V's I think you'll be able to manage without a subwoofer, since they go quite a bit lower than most 5" speakers. They don't go quite as los as the HS8, but low enough I'd say.
      If you want to use subwoofer as well then by all means. But keep in mind that a subwoofer is not something you typically want to use while mixing. I find that it can be a good tool to use to check the low end of your mix, but if you use it at all times then it's very easy to get a thin mix in the end. It can be tempting to go for the most powerful one you can find, but if you have a small or medium sized room then a 8" subfoower will be a better choice, or else you'll just muddy up the mix.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, that's a fairly small room indeed. This will depend a bit on what's most important to you, accurate monitoring or low-end response. It's hard to produce bass-heavy music when you can't hear the low-end well. Adding a subwoofer introduces many of the same problems with regard to room size, so that's not a solution either.
      The problem with smaller rooms is that the sound waves bounce around more. The low-end, with longer wavelengths doesn't really have the space to propagate properly, so you'll get a very inaccurate sound. However, mixing bass heavy music without low-end extension can be just as bad so it depends a bit on what you need.
      Check out my review of the Adam Audio T8V's here: th-cam.com/video/dyYmwSmifHc/w-d-xo.html
      Also, if you have a small room then Sonarworks reference 4 might help correct some of your issues. If you go for 8" monitors in a small room then I would definitely consider reference 4. it can correct for various room issues. I have a video about it here: th-cam.com/video/BhBlTJVx3zU/w-d-xo.html

      FireWalk indeed that can be significant if your music lives in the low end. I’m thinking of getting the 10s sub, in which case it won’t matter if it’s a 5 or a 7 because the sub is handling everything below 120 or 80 depending on x over selection. The music I do isn’t that bass heavy. It’s nice having the option of turning on a sub when needed. The bi amped monitors I was using would heat up the room too much after hours of operation. I went with the 5 series for less power draw. I know it’s a dumb way to select monitors, but being locked in a room with hot monitors isn’t fun. Happy music making !

      I've been using the T8V's for two months now and I'm very impressed. The low-end response is very similar to the Yamaha HS8's. However, the high end provides more clarity overall, so they feel more detailed.

      Indeed! As long as you really know you monitors well, and you know how music translates to those monitors then you're good. Remember, Avicii used to mix on headphones on a noisy plane. That's because he really knew his gear, and was still able to get the mix right. The most important thing is to listen to a lot of commercial mixes on your monitors. That way you'll get to know how commercial mixes translates to your monitors, in your room. Once you really learn how music translates to those monitors, and in that room, it will be much easier to get your own mixes sounding good. :)

    • @FireWalkMusic

      Hey, the best way to do it is if you have an audio interface with more than one pair of outputs. There are splitters available, which can split the cable into two, but that can often introduce noise, so If you only have one output source from the interface then I would recommend getting an external splitter box. That's what I'm using. That will allow you to easily turn the sub on and off. :)

    • @FireWalkMusic

      Yes and No. I actually have both and I find that the T7V has better clarity than the HS8. However, they don't have the same impact in the low end as the HS8, which I really like. If I could choose I would want the high end clarity from the T7V combined with the low end of the HS8. Of course, that's not possible, so you'll have to choose. It will depend on how large your room is, distance from the rear wall, what kind of music you produce and so on. Keep in mind that the T7v is also about half the price of the HS8 so they are definitely providing better value in that regard.
      If you have a small to medium sized room then the T7V might be the way to go. If you have a larger room then I would go for the HS8.

    what is your opinion about krk 6?

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest I'm not a huge fan of the KRK's. They seem to amplify the low end too much, which means that they are not 100% linear. I almost went for the VXT6 once, but after comparing them to other brands I just found that they were a bit too boomy for me. There's plenty of people mixing on KRK's, in fact they are extremely popular due to their stylish design and affordable price, and as long as you know a pair of monitors and how music made on those translates to other systems then you can make good music on pretty much anything. That said, I always recommend going for monitors that gives you a linear frequency response. Essentially, you want them to sound as boring as possible, and I feel like the KRK's are usually sweetening things up a little bit too much, especially in the low end. This is OK for hifi speakers but not for monitors intended for mixing. It also depends on your room. Some rooms tend to amplify bass and some tend to cancel it out, and this should also impact your choice of monitors.

    • @PabloGarcia20
      @PabloGarcia20 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with the low freq, I am using the bass traps in the room to kill some frequencies, in the future I will buy for the hs8 of, or Adams. Your videos are awesome!

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can assure you that these have a very flat and linear frequency response. They don't sound anything like hifi speakers. Trust me, I know. I even used to work at a shop selling hifi speakers many years ago. The reason people have such different opinions regarding speakers has more to do with our individual hearing than the speakers themselves most of the time. We all perceive sound very differently. Our hearing is far form linear, and we all have dips (small hearing damage) here and there along the spectrum which will dictate how we perceive sound.
      The laurel vs Yanny phenomenon is a good example of that. Some people would clearly hear Yanny and some would hear Laurel.
      I even have a video about this, and you should definitely check it out: th-cam.com/video/FaDhBq598kA/w-d-xo.html
      Also, make sure to read the comments, and pay attention to the tests where some frequencies are reduced and some are amplified. It goes to show just how different we all perceive sound. :)
      I've been interested in hifi, and sound in general, as well as music production for more than 25 years, and I can safely say that these monitors are among the better ones in the entry level segment.
      As I said in the video, the KRK's and some others will provide more low end, and some people will always prefer more bass. The problem is that they're fooling themselves into thinking that they are better because the low end is sounding better (louder is always better). What you want is an accurate and flat representation of your mix, and that's what you're getting here.

      That depends. Headphones is a bit tricky because it's not just about how they sound. Besides sound quality, comfort is also very important. If you are mainly producing on headphones then you'll have to find some that is sitting well on your ears, which is not too heavy and which remains comfortable even after hours of working. Everyone will have different opinions here, and it usually boils down to comfort in most cases.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible, but not recommended. In theory, you can mix on just about anything. Even a cheap pair of earbuds can be used. The trick is to know that particular piece of equipment inside out. Once you know exactly how commercial music translates to those speakers or earbuds (or whatever it is), it will be possible to mix on them and get decent sounding mixes. However, it's not ideal. HIFI equipment will always color the sound, and you won't hear a 100% true representation of your mix. Some parts of the spectrum will be boosted, other parts will be reduced. This can in turn cause you to make the wrong mixing decisions, because you're adjusting the sound based on how it sounds on those speakers. When played on other speakers later on, the low end for example might sound too loud.
      I always recommend using studio monitors or studio headphones for this reason.
      All that said, if you know your speakers really well and how other commercial music tend to sound on them, you can compensate for this and still get good mixes. :)

  • @rsvp9816
    @rsvp9816 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    hmm your review is like the inverse of my thoughts on these speakers which is interesting. these speakers seem boomy and undefined in the low-end and the mid-range is lacking openess. I guess we all hear different things maybe? to me the yamaha hs8 spank these.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sound is indeed perceived very differently, which is why some people prefer one kind of monitor, or headphone, and others prefer something else.
      I don't find the T7V's boomy, in fact I think they could have had a little bit more power and offer slightly more low-end in general. It's really the only minor complaint I have with these. That said, it's a 7" woofer so it won't be able to compare with an 8". The HS8 do provide far better low-end extention and more power, so they feel more controlled in the bottom-end. If you have a medium or large sized room then I would probably go for the HS8, or the new T8V's from Adam Audio which I am currently using. I can't seem to make up my mind when it comes to the T8V or the HS8. They seem to be very well matched.

      I make mostly trance music myself and I find that the ADM Audio T7V's are good all round monitors. They provide a very flat and accurate representation of your mix, regardless of genre. They don't go as low as the HS8, which is larger, but the higher mids and the high end is exceptionally clear, making it very easy to mix things that would usually require headphones for fine tuning. At the end of the day it's a matter of personal preference. Some prefer clarity and some prefer low end. In terms of woofers, there will always be a trade off there. Also, keep in mind that everyone has different hearing. People don't hear the same thing. The Yanny vs Laurel thing is a good example of that, where some would say they clearly hear laurel, and some insist they are hearing yanny. It's because everyone have a different sensitivity curve through their hearing spectrum, and this will also impact how they perceive different sounds, and monitors as well.. :)
