    I even didn't know the existence of this feature on these cameras. I used to adjust those difficult sunset/rise, cloud/sky views, in my GoPro Hero 8, only via over or underexposure feature, so far. Thanks for explaining this.

    One thing you missed is that you actually have two options when setting your exposure zone. You can select a zone and click the checkmark WITHOUT tapping inside the brackets so the exposure automatically adjusts for the zone you select. If you lock the exposure zone, it will NOT adjust on the fly.

    Been using GoPros since the Hero 5 almost exclusively for timelapse. After watching your EXCELLENT videos, I upgraded to the 12 (now have several) to use ND filters + Shutter speed in Photo mode to eliminate flashing on sunsets/rises. Did a test yesterday, looks AMAZING, but still got flashing as the sun was almost gone. Would exposure lock fix that? If I am setting shutter speed, not sure what exposure lock would do anything?

      The GoPro is really an excellent time lapse camera so I’m glad to see you’ve been able to use it for this functionality as well.
      Yes, I have done time lapses with and without exposure lock and the exposure lock can really do a great job with eliminating flicker. I do find I have to think ahead and use care with where in my frame I lock the exposure, so I do recommend a bit of experimenting with this, but yes, exposure lock is a great tool for eliminating flicker.

    Can the spot be locked into the next power cycle? The Hero 2 and Session 5 could be set to ‘permanent’ (though strictly center spot). There was mention online that the exposure point could be locked using the lock screen AND that would hold it thru a power cycle. This doesn’t work though on full size Hero 5 Black

  • @Kermis14

    What about locking the exposure at nighttime (early in the morning) while roadtripping, the sky is turning lighter during the day. Is it even necessary to lock exposure?
    I really want to make a nice Timewarp video of a landscape changing from country roads to mountain roads.
    Do you got any tips?

  • @ShochikubaiMiroku

    It's really unfortunate that we can no longer keep the spot on mode active all the time and that we have to press the screen again each time you restart...

  • @MaskedGearhead

    So the exposure lock cannot be used when using ND filters with manual adjusted shutter speed? As the exposure lock calculates the best ISO, shutter for the subject. Correct?

    Is there a way to turn this off? I can't record POV videos without covering the entire screen.

    • @GreatDayForAHike

    Does the exposure lock stay when the gopro turns off or is it reset? I currently have a Hero 5 Black and the setting resets if the camera is turned off. Was wondering if it was different for the 9 Black or anything newer than the 5 Black

  • @MeJosephMotovlog
    @MeJosephMotovlog ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Question, how would this work for moving gopro? Lets say for motovlogger. For example, I set the exposure lock at the top of the frame, at the sky. Then as im moving, the scene changed. I got inside of the restaurant maybe. Will the gopro auto adjust the exposure based on the current scene that im in, which now is the inside of a building, or it saved the initial exposure i set it up with which is the sky.

    • @MeJosephMotovlog
      @MeJosephMotovlog ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im a motovlogget and wondering if i should use this. If yes, where should i put the focus on. Im mostly outside when its day time. Lots of bright sun sky here in my country.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both great questions. Once you lock the exposure to a part of your frame it will remain locked on that part. So if the lighting changes the exposure lock will still properly exposure based on the sampling from that same part of your frame whether your frame changes or not. Until you cancel the lock.
      While motovlogging I expect you may want to ensure the sky is properly exposed if that occupies much of your frame.

      @@GreatDayForAHike Thanks for a very informative video!
      GoPro user here....my Hero 11 is scheduled to show up on Tuesday 3/14/23. I have a similar question. Does Exposure Lock, "lock" the exposure settings? (f-stop, shutter speed, frame rate, etc.) Or is it an active metering window that you can move around to choose what area of the frame you want exposed correctly?
      For example, if you don't lock it, can you move the camera around and see it constantly update and always pull a correct exposure from inside that box? But then when you lock it, the actual exposure settings are locked, so if you suddenly point it at the sun, it will be very overexposed because the settings are locked.
      Thanks in advance!
