      Michael Couture You and me both Michael. Actually I do have an average house with an amazing back yard but not to this scale. I hate housework with a CAPITOL P.4 PASSION! I'll do anything to not get stuck inside the house.

    Amazing backyard oasis!!- I finally realized in my 50's that buying stuff and having nice cars and those payments was just not worth it. I spend most of my time at home and over 50% of that time outdoors where I can enjoy my backyard. I would rather invest that money into where I spend my time. I'm slowly over time (4 years in) building a botanical garden of various features and plants. I'm up to 62 different plants , trees, and shrubs with 7 distinct sitting areas on a 1.2 acre plot in North Texas. This is a place where we can have family get togethers for holidays, kids birthdays and build lifelong memories. It has taken a lot of hard work, time and yes money. The upkeep is significant but I wouldn't change that effort for the reward I get when my family comes over to enjoy it. I only have a small water feature but hope to add a larger one over the years along with a putting green we can chip to from multiple spots for a friendly game to enjoy.

      Don't. The type of development that allows this guy to do this destroys nature. The fact that they called this densely populated is a joke.
      While the yard is beautiful, it's all artificial. He's selling the illusion of nature. He's bringing in non-native fish that could be hazardous if somehow they were to get into the actual waterways, brought in non-native plants that don't do much if anything for native insect species some of which are very capable of becoming invasive (bamboo is cool looking and can be useful, but it's extremely invasive if not kept in check, pumping recycled water through a pump system that wastes energy, and taking up way more land than anyone needs to do it. you're doing more for nature by being a city dweller in actual density than this guy does.

      💯 re: ripping apart rock ledges - I would like to see a video of that area - wonder how beautiful and natural that looks 🤔. And...he kept mentioning bamboo gardens..fertilizing the bamboo...I certainly hope that stuff is contained because it is aggressive and taking over natural habitats on Long Island. Plus why not let the native wildlife take full advantage of this. Selecting which animals get to enjoy it...and stocking the pond with non-native species. And the bit about “securing the turtles in place”....🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

    I'm down in south FLA, and doing the same thing on a smaller scale. My pond is about 2,000 gallons, and a small stream about 30 feet with twists and bends and a collection pool. You don't need to collect the sentiment, if you add plants to filter. I also collect rain water in a 1000 gallon container, so I can change or add water as needed. So, my pond only costs me fish food and electricity. Once you do something like this... if you build it, they will come... is an understatement! All sorts of animals have moved in or stop by the yard, turtles, snakes and birds stop by all the time. Keep that in mind! some times, you'll get animals you may not want.

    • @kimmasterson9529
      @kimmasterson9529 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Jeremiah I would love to see pics of your pond. Creating your personal space to incorporate nature in it says a lot about you. Good of course I think. Animal lovers are much more positive people in general but a person who builds ponds and maintains and welcomes nature into his world is the kind of people I prefer to know and hang out with. Any way it be kewl if you would share pics of your creations! I have four ponds. I have 17 turtles a tortoise, lots of lizards, a orange gecko, about 300 frogs ten preying mantis, ladybugs, lots of dragon flies, 22 koi, 30-40 gold fish, 1000 grey mosquito eating fish, tadpoles, hummingbirds, 6 bunnies, 4 dogs, crickets, skunks, raccoons, the occasional coyotes. I love my paradise. I would think I died and went to heaven if I woke up in this garden showcased on video.

    Many times I see attractive landscapes to the eye, but they are dead in terms of wildlife. You have to plant native plants to attract birds and butterflies. Without birds and butterflies and natives plants you end up having a plastic looking scenery. It more rewarding to the soul to try to replace what was taken away by developers and re plant all the native plants and trees that birds and butterflies have Co evolved with. So many native butterflies are extinct because people just want to plant European, Tropical or Oriental plants. Plant and replace native plants.

      EXACTLY! l'm in The Florida Native Plant Society. We have a saying in the native plant community; if nothings eating your plants, they're not part of the ecosystem. lnsects have very specific nutritional needs, especially butterflies. Think milkweed for monarchs. 96% of bird species feed their young insects. No insects, no birds. lf you want your landscape to come alive, PLANT NATIVE!!!

      Do not put turtle in the koi pond. Their wastes got very bad baterias that would kill all the koi. Only the mud fishes like cat fish could survive with turtle. Turtle only fit in swamp, not clean water and they eat baby fishes too. If you let your kids play with turtle, they would get liver disease dues to those bacterias.
      Your pond is in perfect banlance. Do not destroy it.

    • @Christodophilus
      @Christodophilus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @Yashash Dave What you're describing, are more about priorities. Because any number of people can work hard, but don't all start with the same advantages or opportunities. It doesn't make you more wealthy, for example, if you live in a part of the world with a depressed economy. But you're still working hard. So priorities place necessities first, and luxury last. Not how hard you work. Having said that though, isn't building an artificial water feature, a luxury?

    • @Christodophilus
      @Christodophilus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @Yashash Dave There is some crossover between luxury and need, for sure, but they're literally at opposite ends of the spectrum. Where one is the basics of survival, and the other exceeds it, exorbitantly.
      For example, some of the benefits you've mentioned in building this water feature, are true. However, a mountain or two had to be displaced, first. Therefore, it's a luxury to move the side of a mountain to recreate nature. Having access to water though, and using it to grow food, is a need.
      A priority would ask, is it a necessity to move the mountain, first? Or how little can I disturb nature, in order to create access to the things I need - like growing food and delivering water to it? Setting a priority, considers the fulcrum between luxury and need. If they're similar bedfellows, I would argue that is personal desire, masquerading as a priority. As everything goes towards consolidating personal desire.
      My caution is only to beware the crossover, so we don't displace aspects of nature that don't have to be. By the way, enjoying mulling through your thoughts. I don't think they're all wrong. I just have slight variations in my own perspective.

      @MrJhchrist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@D_A_D_ I hear what you are saying about suburban backyards never being "real" nature. I disagree that moving materials like rocks is inherently a significant problem, certainly not in context of all the other resources that must be moved and consumed for the cities and suburbs to exist at all. Do you love nature? Me too. Do you live in a way that doesn't extract natural resources from outside your yard? I don't. Do you live in a house built only out of resources that were found in your yard? I don't. Humans exploit natural resources. Check. But short of any evidence to the contrary, I'll continue to assume that moving rocks from one place in the state to another for landscaping is pretty low harm in the grand scheme of things.

    The house I bought 6 years ago came with a large berm previously designed to shorten the backyard. I started w a wasteland of sad ground-cover and weeds, on an inconvenient mound. It has now evolved by carving out steps and paths and working w the elevations to create fun follies; all w randomly collected and scavenged materials that determined the design. What I first though was a landscape burden became my pride and joy.
