I always wanted a swimming pond. I ended up designing my pool to look like a pond. People have to ask if it’s a pond or pool so I guess I did good.

I knew someone who used compacted clay and used natural grasses to filter so it was totally natural and clean.

Thats awesome!! But, California doesn't have the best soil for this, or weather for that matter (rains only in early spring maybe 3 times). You would be using so much water compared to a liner.

Your work is beautiful. Have you ever successfully done a natural pool in a tropical climate? I am in Bucerias, Nayarit México. Tropical climate year round. I tried to convert my traditional pool to a natural pool but could never get ahead of the algae or the snails!!

I live in the tropics..ions (clearwaterpoolsystemsdotcom) and combine UV and Ozone which is a process called AOP like from(Hayward) I also use an oxygenation pump for air bubbles, and pump the water in and out of a 40 foot semi sealed pit which cools the water.

How do you get rid of the snails? They are the bigger problem as they cluster into the tubing and clog the pumps and interfere with the water flow.

In a tropical climates, you can totally use an Aqauscape UV filtration system along with an Aquascape biological filtration system. Also, I seen amazing results with Ozone. But you would need to hire a pro to get that setup right.
You are never going to have "0" algae in the pond. Thats the just part of a natural ecosystem pond. :) Hope that helps.

@@CaliforniaWaterscapes thank you. I understand there will always be some algae. The biggest problem here is the snails that reproduce by the thousands and get into the lines and clog everything. Is an ozone system going to kill them off?

Ozone being safe for fish, would mean it would be safe for living things including snails and plants. Add animals to the pond that eat snails as part of their regular diets. Frogs and sterlets eat adult pond snails. Some smaller fish, such as mosquito fish, eat snail eggs. We don't deal this any snail infestations because the fish eat the snail eggs and don't let them reproduce.
