How to make a Natural : Organic Pool in America

  • David Pagan Butler explains how a DIY pool in Georgia, USA was made - zero build, with only sculpted earth walls and his bubble flow circulation system. This pool was made by Alan Hall with the help of his family and friends (and moral support from David) and is an inspiration for those who aspire to create a beautiful, chemical free pool for swimming and a precious habitat for wildlife.
    Have a look at Alan's moving film of the project:

    people act like this is disgusting. have you swam in a pond lake or creek? if the answer is yes then you swam with the creatures that naturally inhabit it. I would rather swim in this than a chlorine pool any day.

    Had a Teacher friend who went to dig a pool and hit a natural spring. It was so beautiful, looked like a pond untill you got close and seen the crystal blue water that stays at 50 degrees all year with natural grass on the bottom and sides, had fish, turtles in there also. It was so bizarre and beautiful. She said she was so lucky it happened and wouldn't trade it for any modern pool. Here on Eastern Shore in Md it's so hard to get a permit and location because there is so much water around like a huge Island.

You can add a fence around the pool to keep pest/animals away from your pool and also as a safety concern for little kid's. It's a win win scenario, Keep kids safe and keep unwanted animals away. There's always another way to go around fixing and making things perfect. That's how we humans learn. Trial and error.

    This is very similar to a bog filter we set up to handle our aquaponics system. For those who think it will be stagnant, just the opposite. The outer edges act as a biological filter, the bog plants he's added will also help to filter nutrients out. You also see something similar to this in old school wastewater treatment systems, in the settling ponds. Done right, the water in the swimming area should remain crystal clear.

      The difference between a natural pool and a natural pond, is the level of nutrients in the water(or atleast thats a big part of it). If your pool has low levels of nutrients in it, then there is very little of the fundamental life needed in the food chain of aquatic/semi aquatic organisms.
      Yes, life will move in, but probably not that much if done properly. Also, if this life isn't harmful to humans what does it matter?

    Hello Dave I hope you are still reading the comments as we are building a pond based on the design of this video. Are the air lift pipes connected to piping going to the pump or are you using one of the two black pipes to send water from the pump back to the pond - are the air lifts traveling to for from the pump? If both of the black pipes are feeding the pump are they connected together before reaching the pump or are there two bulkheads entering the pump box (skimmer)?
    Hope you answer soon as our liner is being laid in 4 days. If you respond I will provide you a link to our finished pond. Thanks David (Yes my name as well)

      Hi Crow, What did you find out about the plant filter pipework, pump, etc.? I don't get how it works from the video. What are the small blue pipes running in the top of the air-lift pipes? Is this system like a aquarium tray filter system? I'd like to make one of these here in Southside Virginia.

    I think it's rather ironic that this "natural pool" starts with a lot of heavy gauge plastic/rubber.... Clay can be used to the same effect, as long as its packed in (the bucket on the backhoe could have packed it).

    • @BeautifuLakesStreamsBiologists
      @BeautifuLakesStreamsBiologists 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some people seem to ignore all the plastic. We never use it. We employ clay seals that last centuries instead of a couple decades like plastic.

    • @BeautifuLakesStreamsBiologists
      @BeautifuLakesStreamsBiologists 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Matt, we use bentonite. Our ponds and lakes are much cleaner than what is seen here. Bentonite just requires a lot more knowledge to employ effectively.

    • @zazugee
      @zazugee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i also dislike using plastics in a natural pond
      but i like david's approach, you dont find much people nowadays who can make a natural pond filtration fit in a urban setting
      i'm planning to make a clay pond in my garden, i've been experimenting with clay to test its hydrolic conductivity under various compaction rates and with various sand/aggregates mixes
      but from what i know so far, clay only works with a gentle slope
      so in addition to the bigger bog area, a sharp slope like in this pond is hard to make with clay
      unless there is a bigger slope from the outer edges till the deep point
      then you fill in the walls with an impermeable material to make the bog/pool separation wall

    this is fantastic! I've noticed black liners are popular in natural pools, but is that the only color they come in? I know the water is clear, but I want to be able to see clearly what I am jumping, and a black liner, as opposed to a lighter colored one, creates a mysterious swimming space.

      Jessica De La Cruz Bravo the black liner really helps to heat the water. also since this is more like a pond the water isnt going to be crystal clear like a chlorinated or saltwater pool. there will be a slight brown/green tint to the water and you cant see it with the dark liner.

    • @estoupaa
      @estoupaa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I build one in Brazil, I add one eletric pump with 1HP, which pumps the water over a hill to make a waterfall that helps with oxigen and makes the place more nice to swim and after the pump I add an Ultra violet light filter, wich helps to control the algae and kills any microbes which can be suck by the pump, without adding any chemicals to the water, there is also some fish wich eats bugs. In amazon there is this option, but I thik you can find much cheaper one's: www.amazon.com/NuvoTM-Ultraviolet-Sterilizer-ground-Swimming/dp/B0167C673S/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1510181662&sr=8-4&keywords=ultraviolet+pool

    • @borisatman2
      @borisatman2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jessica De La Cruz Bravo Hi there
      Well you can line it with any color, and use light color beach gravel, also a water filter would be nice to, but that will filter the food for the natural habitat and algae will take over - this way you have ...really a natural pond - no chemicals leaching in your body, someone here mentioned mosquito problem,...mosqito larvae in the water will be eaten by the tiny young fish! Meaning like 100% of it...

      Antibiotics have been around for less then 100 years. People have been swimming in natural water far dirtier then this since... well we have ALWAYS been swimming in natural water, and so has life going back billions of years.
      You do realize that every square inch of your body is SWARMING with bacteria, you have something like 3-4lbs of pure bacteria/micro organisms in your gut. Everytime you breathe, swallow, or touch something you are both transferring and picking up micro-organisms/bacteria.
      If your a germaphobe, thats fine, its a condition and maby its not your fault... but don't delude yourself into thinking that its the right way to be and that we are in constant danger of anything that isn't completely sterile... If you were to measure the amount of bacteria cells on and inside our body versus our own living cells, it would be as little as a 1:1 ratio and as much as 10:1 in favor of microorganisms, many of which are crucial for our survival.
      Good luck!
