      @@Incomudro1963 the build quality was not terrible on the LTD. my grand parents bought on in 1969. its not a modern sports car, it is a 50 year old luxury car. so yes the breaking and handling sucked compared to a modern car. but they also went to the moon in a space capsule that has less computing power than your phone. There were no build quality issue with the LTD. my grandparents bought one in 69. about 5 years before I was born, it was still running when i turned 16, all 4 of my cousins drove it in high school, my younger brother drove it when he was going to collage, my grandmother hit a cow with several years latter, an everyone walked away with out a scratch. the only reason its not running now, is the quit making parts to repair them.

    grand parents bought a new 70 with that engine - I snuck out one night at age 12 or 13 with my cousin we drove the car down the block to a big hill - put the car in 2nd (auto) foot on brake slowly started revving the engine - at about 2500 rpms let off the brake and floored it - it laid tread up the hill for a block - it was an insane torque monster with thin tires

    That 2.80 rear definitely was a performance culprit here. Back in the days when there was no AOD (fourth gear) for an already power hungry transmission, putting a tall rear gear was the only option you had for economy. Good tires and gearing selection can do a lot, even for a mild setup.

Through the corners, this fat fendered Ford plowed like John Deere’s finest, but sprung back into shape quickly enough, moving down the pike with plenty of scoot... Noteworthy is the 480 foot pounds of torque at 2,800 rpm, which delivers to the driver all the yank he needs to twist the night away... Braking was mediocre with moderate fade, but did haul the car to a stop before we crossed the state line... Inside, the front bench seat with fold down armrest has acres of space to stretch out and relax the dogs daddio.”

      Police suspension and Velvet Touch full metallic brakes cured all of those problems but those breaks don't stop until you heat them up. Gearing around 3.50 and not 2.73 would help acceleration ,too. That long nose with the flat grill made high speed driving easy. I could do 90 in first 120 in second and IDK in 3rd.

      I was surprised to see the mid to late 60s full size Galaxie 4 door cars could be ordered with the 427; there is a video of a station wagon (maybe '67) with a 427/4-speed. I know, lots of the 2-door Galaxies had the 'R' code, but imagine the sleeper of a 4-door or station wagon with that engine back in the day! I am sure--very, very rare, but they do exist. Come to think of it, a select very few (like 3 or 4) of the full-size Chrysler (as in corporation, which includes Plymouth and Dodge) were Hemi 4 door sedans. Those might have been special order for law enforcement, but that would be cool bidding on one in the mid-70s at a fleet auction. I would be happy with the '71 Polara ex-CHP sedan had I been old enough to bid on one!

    • @culcune
      @culcune 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Laurie Sarno I vaguely recall reading something about that in an article. It may have been mentioned in the same article about the FBI Hemi sedans; something like 3 or 4 cars made for the FBI with Hemis. I would think that more people would have talked about CO patrol cars installed with Hemis over the years if true. Perhaps some hot-rodder sheriff had a couple cars converted to 426s? They would have been engines from wrecked cars is my guess as I am fairly certain crate engine Hemis would not have been plentiful. Or, the cars were experimental cars from Chrysler?

If there was ever a downfall of old cars it was the inadequate braking tech for anything but normal, leisurely, easy driving. Even with front disc brakes, braking technology was no match for heavy cars with lots of power, lots of weight up front, and soft suspensions at high speed. You need larger discs, Not just larger disc brakes 4 piston vented calipers all around if you're going to slam the brake pedal on a 4400 lb car from 70 mph all day.
