Great video! Love the Spear build, leveling one now. Did not see you mention it(apologies if I missed it), but you can repair Spears, great for higher level spears.
Absolutely! And no, haven't mentioned - thank you for adding that! I think only the spears you bring from orbit will not be available for repair, as none of these items are!
Heh, right?! Mostly because of recording video and there is no time nor need to skin and get use of the boar - more like to get rid of that pesky animal ;)
I think you've convinced me to give spears another try. When I first started playing this game I had just finished Far Cry Primal and was a spear master. Naturally the first thing I went for in Icarus was the spear, but I really sucked with it. I think I can make them work now, especially since I'm level 40 and can make much better spears
Absolutely! And I will repeat myself a bit - they are NOT easy, bow + aimbot or firearms are face-roll options! I think that is why mastering that skill shot and once nailing your targets down gives so much more satisfaction and energy in the gameplay! :)
@@MLMariss I crafted me a platinum spear, and I find myself using it more and more. It is nice to forget about having to craft more arrows all the time. And my hit rate is actually higher with a spear since I mostly only take shots I think will hit and be kill shots. Thanks for the tip man!
Hi there. First off, very ejoyable videos. Good and plenty information and a sympatic delivery. I have a question regarding the spears. Are they valid with bosses as well? Especially in regards of the newly introduced world bosses I was wondering if you spear them as well. Due to size and Mechanics, like the worm, I think of retrieving them as close to impossible. Do you still do it? Like just build couple of spears and go at them or is this a point where you switch to the more "conventional" firearms/bows?
Thank you for your kind words - means a lot! ;) Simple answer: no! Every weapon basically is 'until you get firearms' in my playbook. And I would not suggest to go hunt bosses unprepared (only if doing a speedrun and/or with party), so in this case preparation part would consist of getting firearm :D Good bow can also do the trick, but generally speaking nothing beats good old 6 round rifle :)
I have removed killcam and the bow became insenly unprecise and stealth headshot one-shot targets 1 on 20 times. With killcam on, i one-shot targets 18 on 20 time. Is the same for all of you ?
Heh, yes! That is mentioned in the Bow video - as I call it aim-bot! Basically the 'real' thing is when it is turned off - the speed, trajectory, weight of arrow, distance, animal movement - everything taken in account!
Spear are great but they dont stack in inventory like arrow or bullet. Means if u want to focus on it, u need atleast 3-5 spears. You can't only rely on 1-2 because if u miss ur critical, isn't dead.. but you do 🤪
that is the only reason i have not played with spear yet, if atleast they would stack to 3 then i would switch. but it would be hard to keep track of durability if they are stacked, it would mean we need javelin instead of spear
This ir true - in a sense, if we could stack..let's say 3 or 5 of them - that would be HUGE buff and boost to bring back Spears to everyone :D BUT truth to be told - I've ran with 3+ Wood spears only (because they cheap and low durability), and 2 Spears only starting from Bone. Yes, there is missing point you mentioned - where you just pick them up. Yes, that includes a bit thinking before you throw - if the animal is on top of the cliff and you have a chance to miss and drop your spear +9000 m away :D Then change position a bit, but from Carbon Spear ahead - I have never ran with more than 1 Spear. For small animals if you miss you finish them with Dagger/Bow/Rifle/whatever and for Bears you just dance-evade and pick it up not from it's snout but from the ground :)
I created a spear guy and had some fun with him. Went full in on the spear tree for both melee and thrown. I disliked that there were no real 'accuracy' talents. Throwing them has been a trial and missed so many times. The first time I ever managed to solo a polar bear was with my spear guy. I did not care for the defense gain requiring a spear in your hands. So when you throw one, you gimp your own defense. But the biggest fault I have had with spears is when playing with a friend. If they shoot a target with arrows. Then your thrown spear in that mob drops out of the world right before you skin the target and only get arrows.
Oh, yes, this is true! Also the same problem if you kill your target with 3+ arrows then you will always lose them! And if in the mix is Spear..then that is a no go - you have to retrieve it before skin! And that also is not always possible. And you are correct about that defense losing! The only way to have it all the time is 2+ spears all the time on you..which is not as great as long as they are not stackable :/ You pointed our very important downsides, thank you for that!
Try and take on a polar bear with a steel spear. I don't know if you can do that without dodging. Bolt Action Rifle though is possible within 3-4 shots
I was reading the first part..but why without dodging? Bear fights exclusively require to dodge and perform the 'dance with the bear' to successfully get through them! Successfully - you kill bear with little to no damage taken. And this is true for regular AND for polar bears..so again - why you ask without dodging? Polar bears have way more healh points, so the dance is unavoidable, where regular bears can be killed with one-shots if lucky. :) If that answers your question?
Do we really need to focus on spear talents for spear use or is having a few spears on the toolbar for bear defense is enough while focusing on bow talents? Also, do the spear throwing speed talents make a significant difference in how easy it is to hit things?
Throw speed makes it go farther... changes how you will aim but your range goes way up.. at that point accuracy of the spear is more important because they have a huge MOE
Excellent questions! IMHO if you don't get Spear Highlight - you have 2 options 1) stick to low level and cost spears (ineffective) 2) regularly replace the lost high-end spears (ineffective). So that's why the bear minimum is to get that talent..which does not imporve damage, aim, nothing particular.. And speed was explained very well by Eric! Thank you for that!
Hmm..I will think about it as I don't feel yet I have all the tips myself :D Still in learning process to master spears! And thank you for the suggestion for the next topics ;)
Does "Strong thrust" 1 and 2 stack with "from Afar" 1 and 2? the "Spear parry" skill only works when the spear is equipped if you throw it do you lose the buff? Does "Spear parry" compensate for the spear being the only early game weapon without a stun and speed buff? and what does wound do in the skill "deep wounds"?
A lot of questions! 1) No - melee (thrust) and ranged (throw) damages are separate 2) Yes - once you have empty hands that (and any) spear equip talent will be lost until you get spear back in your hand (bring two spears) 3) Stun? Which weapon you are thinking when you say stun? Spear is the only weapon giving resistance, but this still needs to be tested how good/useful it actually is 4) Deep Wounds I haven't explored yet - as talent points are not changeable as of now - I would expect bleeding (damage over time) but now you got me thinking if there would be similar effect when player has a deep wound debuff, which is totally different and impacts healing/stamina/etc. This is still to be investiagated!
@@MLMariss Thank you for responding. when I was referring to the stun I meant the immobilize in bows it's "Pinning shot" and in knives it's "Stay right there" from my experience those make the prey stop and they don't attack or move for a few seconds. I have been using it on my knife build and I kill bears if I proc the immobilize effect. I have not tried "Deep wounds" yet. I wanted to ask to see if you have tried it.
I'm curious to see how that works, but had no chance to try it yet! Now I'm wondering about that Stay Right There' - so you say the animal is not even stopped at the place but is not also attacking? Where you in the reach range? I think it would not even do attack animation if you are too far from the reach - I'm just now curious to understand if it is really pin or stun?! o.O
@@MLMariss I don't know the exact mechanics but when I hit the bear with a knife slash sometimes it gets stun and I can just stand in front of it's face and knife it to death. It is worth a look into.
I'd say until the devs patch up Icarus and guarantee your spears don't fall through the map or dissappear, high level spears aren't worth it yet. You are risking hours and hours of grinding for a fabricator, material converter, and composites to make a composite spear that could he thrown away instantly, just for the benefit of not using resources on ammo. I'd rather lose 100 flint arrows to breaking than risk losing a composite spear to bugs.
Also, I just want to know if exotic spears can be thrown. I know that the basic exotic knife can't be thrown for the reason that you'll probably lose it if you miss your target. Idk about exotic spears though
That is true - before we test it, we can't be sure :D I mean - even that wouldn't make sense: non-throwable spear! There are many things in the game that says one, but does nothing of that :D But about the spears..I follow the same logic as your logic with Bone Arrows - they are cheap to make and no worries if lost. So I run around with Bone Spear (usually 2 of them) which is enough for Bear fights (a grade higher would be better) - cheap to make and no problem losing it , I will just make a now one :D
@@MLMariss the bone spear strat definitely has its' merits, had a ton of fun running that strat in a quick speed run prospect. Love the vid. My biggest complaint on spears if you must have item highlights on to have a chance to find it of you miss a toss. I hate item highlights and have them off. Not horrible on wood, bone and iron..but costly afterwards.
My man! I had that highlight turned of as well for immersion! But turns out the talent will NOT work if you don't have it enabled in settings :D That actually reminds me to go and write this suggestion to update/change this :) Thank you!
Idk, Spears are kind of hard to aim/shoot, and you can totally save the 2 points for unlocking the bone spear and go straight for the bow imho. I am of course biased af, but as an irl hobby archer, I do prefer the bow, in pretty much any game too. Turns out the bows are usually totally OP, esp. with all the perks you can unlock, well, some of the perks, ie as much as I can afford while still going for a late game shotgun build, at least that is my plan so far. The shotgun is just unbeatable when a big teddybear somehow manages to suprise rush you, (for example at night when you can`t even see the bastard, or when you are distracted or whatever) A blast or two from my trusty shotgun and all is good in the world again... 🙂
Absolutely - and I'm a ranged damager in every game as well! The problem with Shotgun is the valuable Copper waste :/ But you have a valid points about the bear surprises! That is the only and real issue in the game player need to face!
@@MLMariss Weeeeell, if we are going to talk challenges, there also is the fact this game has me worn down with all the senseless infuriating design choices, (no hotkeys, no tutorials, not being able to exit a cave, that is right at the last beacon spot of a pretty long mission, nothing is ever explained, not even a little, like one has to activate a bed to make it a spawn point for example, etc, etc.) and the constant "day late, dollar short" position you inevidably keep finding yourself in, that I am constantly tempted to take my keyboard and lodge it into my monitor, before using this newly created battery weapon on my oh so expensive PC, the one I was so proud of building not one and a half years ago, and just keep beating it until I can`t feel my hands anymore... ...or something along those lines. ;-)

@@MLMariss I think it struck such a chord with me because I totally feel your pain. I HATE losing something I worked hard for and spent a bunch of time crafting! On a separate note, I want to thank you for all your videos on Icarus. They have helped me tremendously! I just wish I had found them before I started playing so I could have followed some of your builds a bit more closely. I just hit level 40 last night so all my talent points are assigned. But I really appreciate the time and thought you put into each little detail of the game. There is a lot of nuance that I just wasn't aware of until I watched how you break things down. This video in highlights that in particular when you show the different drop arcs for each spear. I would have never thought to look for that. Great job, keep it up!
Thank you for your kinds words - this is the reason why I do what I do! :) And while we are on the topic to stop losing valuable things - important advice is to re-assign 'Drop' action from 'Q' keyboard! I have no clue why such a rare used action is assigned so close to your movement buttons! And this is the most common reason why I lost my knives, axes and stuff :D I hope this tip will serve you as well! :)
Love your videos btw. I agree with the concept, but unfortunately it's completely reliant on the false premise that you retrieve your spear. I just crafted a Carbon spear to make this my primary defense. First bear I saw it killed it easily, but was NOT recovered. Head was under surface, so couldn't have grabbed before I skinned. Definitely NOT using spears still until this is fixed.
Thank you! But wait - when you skin it with all the default animal resources you retrieve the Spear as well! Yes, there are sometimes case when the spear is straight down in the ground and it's hard/impossible to pick it out of the animal! I don't think there is any other fix to be applied as there are 2 ways to get it back and as well there are some super rare cases how to still lose it :D For example - you throw it, get a crash then after loading back the game - the Spear will not be there (as the whole world is reset) with animal corpses gone. But is super rare.
@@MLMariss Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I skinned it and didn't get the spear back. Definitely didn't miss, the bear had most health full before I threw it. Maybe a 1-in-a-million time it doesn't come back when skinned, but hard to stomach the cost of losing a carbon spear.
Was this a 1 throw kill or you finished bear with bow? That would explain it, but yea - even so there are some times/glitches/rare cases to lose the stuff, I'm sorry for your loss!
@@MLMariss It's ok thanks for the reply! Again I am so appreciative of all your videos!! 1st shot from bow, then switched to spear and finished the bear with the spear. Only got the arrow back.
Oh, daamn, yes, that is the thing they need to fix/update/patch! This is the fastest way to lose your spear :/ Basically you shouldn't mix arrows with spear..and oh boy I have that learned the hard way too :D Thank you for your kind words - just trying to be the light (guide) for other fellow gamers :)
No, no, no - it's not like they can't! It's a time-consuming and not effective way :) Stealth and critical will be great, but knives are fast, not hard-hitting, so the bonus from stealth will apply only to the first strike. Furthermore - if doing bear dance you will have a chance to strike once per bear charge and on top of that - if you miss the head, the damage is laughable. An average mid-game knife does ~70 damage, so Bear having ~1k HP, minus 300-400 on the first strike, leave you ~600 Hp to deal with ~70 damage per charge..doable, for sure! Effective? Not so much :D
your demo for the gun was stupid. of course they have to go get it. this isn't me saying spears are bad but your enthusiasm for the spear degrading the rest of the weapons is pointless. not everyone wasn't to get up close to a bear and try to dodge. if i saw a bear in the water and had a gun I would rather take the chance losing some recourses than die with there being a slow healing factor. i will say good video besides degrading the gun aspect.
Yeah didn't help that in this spear video when he was attacked by surprise his instinct was to get a gun out... But love all the analysis regardless and I'm sure it helps the devs figure out how to build the game the way they want it played.
Fair point, BUT I need to correct myself if it felt like I'm degrading Firarms. Let me rephrase: 2 viable guns, that are NOT wasting valuable resources which each shot (I'm looking at you Shotgun) are Bolt Action and Hunting Rifles. If you have aggro in bear fight and that is Polar, then Bolt Action will require too much reloads and shots, where the reload speed is the biggest issue in this case, that Hunting rifle is only viable/advisable option here (that's why I have it)! So in other words, what I'm trying to say is - if you are not going T4 or simply don't have yet Hunting Rifle - you have better options to win an aggroed bear with spear that with the Bolt Action Rifle. And I know some/most of you will be wondering - what the hell am I talking about?! Simple - regardless of weapon you need a speed to avoid bear and polar bear attacks. When Bolt Action Rifle is shot, right after is 3 seconds (without talents) reload time, when you are slowed down immensely! To recap - shot in the head is right after bear charge and when it turns around, so right before next charge where you need all the speed to avoid damage :D I hope you get my correction and explanation. So there is a huge gap between landing and owning a Hunting Rifle (with all the explanations) which is only viable Firearm to fight bears. :) Sorry for not explaining it enough that felt like degrading aspect of Firearms.
I wish I had found this before my repeat polar bear deaths. Very helpful--on all levels. Thanks for explaining you reasoning too. It helps.
Happy to help!

I'm concerned about your keyboard, monitor and your health in general :D Cheers mate, happy hunting ;)
@@MLMariss Sorry for ranting m8, your comment just reached me at a pretty fatal moment. I know, I can be a bit short fused sometimes, esp. towards lifeless objects, like monitor screens, and npc avatars for example... lol
Worry not, mate! All good :D I'm always trying to hit on positive/humor note ;) And why I mention that game - if you haven't played..at first when you know nothing and game doesn't tell you sh*t - it was frustrated as hell! But on 2nd and 3rd playthrought - that is really awesome game! I had a surprise comment under one of the videos about it just moments ago and it brought back the memories :D Just a thought and ideas for future games ;)
At 20:43 when he talks about losing high level spears I laughed so hard! Liked and Subscribed just for that LOL
:D Laughed out loud myself, as totally forgot there was this part :D Thank you so much, you made my day!
And while we are on the topic to stop losing valuable things - important advice is to re-assign 'Drop' action from 'Q' keyboard! I have no clue why such a rare used action is assigned so close to your movement buttons! And this is the most common reason why I lost my knives, axes and stuff :D I hope this tip will serve you as well! :)
@@MLMariss that's a great tip for sure. I figured that out a week or two ago, but thank you!
I was too stubborn and changed it only after a lot of stuff was lost already xD
so true
I don't think there is any other fix to be applied as there are 2 ways to get it back and as well there are some super rare cases how to still lose it :D
For example - you throw it, get a crash then after loading back the game - the Spear will not be there (as the whole world is reset) with animal corpses gone.
This is the fastest way to lose your spear :/ Basically you shouldn't mix arrows with spear..and oh boy I have that learned the hard way too :D
Thank you for your kind words - just trying to be the light (guide) for other fellow gamers :)
Is it just me or does he do a voice in that minions movie. 😆👍
You had my curiosity but now you have my attention! :D
Well I disagree with knives not being able to kill bears. Stealth and stabby McStabby in the head
No, no, no - it's not like they can't! It's a time-consuming and not effective way :)
Stealth and critical will be great, but knives are fast, not hard-hitting, so the bonus from stealth will apply only to the first strike.
LOL I hate ass arrows
Am I right?! :D
