Wow! "Epica" is the word! This is the first time I've really followed this piece - great to have the score! - like all Medtner, so dense with ideas! Medtner's music is challenging to both listener and performer - but always worth the effort.
While Oistrakh and Goldenweiser's performance may be more true to the paper, masters as they are, the chemistry of this duo(Labko-Svetlanov) is just unparalleled, that's why I love it so much :P
Boriso-Glebsky and Berezovsky had a pretty good performance, but this one is so much better - I like the sound of the open strings at times here and the piano knows when to break out of its "accompaniment shell" (i.e. at 11:57)
Thanks for posting! Epica sonata is truly epic! Need time to digest. It’s such a big piece I don’t think I’d ever have a chance to learn it, but still it’s great to listen to and know the piece.
It‘s a very central chord to the whole work. You can find it’s first instance in the second bar, in e minor. It can be seen as an inversion of a dominant ninth chord. He uses it as a substitute for subdominant. It’s all over the piece abd so beautiful
tight teamwork brings off this performance and it has heart and soul not just technique. Outstanding performance of an outstanding work, sadly neglected. The impression one gets is that we are listening to a great work of chamber music with the score in hand. Bravo!
idk... why but very very boring piece (only listened to 1st mvt due to boreness though.) Its just to relying on modulating folk melodies. cant really feel anything empty a little bit. i prefer his piano sonatas more. his piano sonatas were great, full of vivid life (very russian ) his skazski s too
there's similar paced piece "winterwind"sonata from him (cause of the key e minore key really has its own personalities), but really dont get why this vln sonata doesnt touches me.
It's very static compared to his piano sonatas, but I like that. I find this work to be dreamy, tranquil, lonely. But I don't get why it's called Epica.
@@williamshakemilk2192 I think it's partialy due to interpretation. It has imo more dynamic and tectonic potential, for example the part in 6:46 can be extremely epic in some interpretations!
One of the greatest sonatas ever
A cut above all other.....Wondrous.....BRAVO from Acapulco!
I don‘t want to die before playing this
What a masterpiece! Sonatas 2 and 3 are two of the best kept secrets in the chamber music repertoire
Indeed

The finale is so wonderfully exhilarating!
Medtner's codas are on different level
Gonna play in next March!!!!
Unbelievable!!
Please post a video of it, I want to hear it
Thank you, I think it is the best version of this sonata, and it is even more perfect with the sheet music !

Repin and Berezovsky are a pretty great duo performing this as well
@@Chav0dazo Chloë Hanslip and Igor Tchetuev are also fantastic.

What an absolutely amazing piece of music! Epic indeed!
Exactly, there is huge chemistry between Labko and Svetlanov ! Thank you for this great job with scord :)

Hands down the best performance of Medtner's best work. Nice to have it with the score, thank you!
medtner's best work?
kinda bold ngl...
@@ConcordMass I mean, it's a masterwork, as are many of Medtner's works, but I don't see why it's a bold claim.
@@stephanjwilliamsSure, this is quite subjective, but in my opinion, the piano sonatas and concerti are much better
If this is his best work I dread to hear his worst.
His best work is garbage. Just like the rest of his work.
Thank you. A lot of sonata for the admission price.
Thank you so much Daniel for making this available. Such transcendental music!
2:16 really interesting chord, something between Cm6 and F
