Everywhere we go he finds his friends and has to imitate them.
This was so quintessentially American it almost made me cry. That was so much fun to watch.

Next year is their 50th anniversary.
This was a great way for me to get a feel for Ragbrai. I live in PA and love to ride. I have been curious about the event and the kind of towns, pace and ways you would traverse with a Class B. In my case I would do all the riding and my wife would do the driving but Im ok with that. ; ) BTW: Dont know how you get the music you use but it's sooooo right for the mood and feel. Thanks for doing this.
The hardest part will be staying cool because we had a most unusual weather week. I think your wife will enjoy the small towns and find plenty to do. My music is from Epidemic Sound and I list all in the description box.

You always plan things so well. Do you mind me asking what careers you guys had in your work life ?
Truth is we don't plan our trips per se. We've both had many careers including running a small business but John ended as the GM at a local business. As for me, I'll just say I was very involved in community stuff.
You're right. Maggie would love that cart. Great perspective about the ride from your point of view. Man! The crowds. Wow! Tell John I'm glad the boys are good. That would be my worry about a ride that long too.

I can see why John wanted his bike & not his eBike…this bike much better for the length of his legs and not cramping up.
I liked that you added that tidbit showing your workout on an eBike-people who frown on eBikes is just ridiculous…people still get exercise, being outdoors, and just enjoy life on eBikes.

Can you please tour your bike rack & hitch assembly. I am considering E-Bike or Trike as a “get around” transport for a one legged man or a man who does not have a leg to stand on.
Maybe I can do a quick video when we get home. What is your main concern. We actually spoke to a guy in Wyoming who had one leg and was riding an unusual ebike.
Cruising through an Amazon Grocery Parking Lot and met up with cyclists cruising up the Handicap Entry - my quip, “by all means cyclists have the right of way!” One cyclist halted to let me pass - his right leg was like my left. Thanked him and wished him good forutne for the courtesy.
RV is the way to go. I can’t imagine sleeping in hot tent after riding all day. 🚴🏻♂️

Have been several times at Sgt. Floyd’s Bluff/Monument and looks like a fun and interesting ride, albeit sore butt for sure! Since I travel alone so much will have to be a spectator. Thanks for the fun adventure.

We’ve done many tours but not RAGBRAI so it was so fun to get a taste of Iowa. We were curious how long your battery would last. We adore you guys and how you calmly take everything in stride! This season has been epic! 💕

I don't know if you know it or not but if you turn your power assist all the way down and one more it will move the RAD Mini at walking speed for just such a reason as your flats. Happy Birthday and thank you for the great video, it was fun.

Thanks for sharing your fitness class!! Great pictures and bike riders. We have a similar event here in Bavaria every year. The distance is about 500 kilometers in about six days and on quite mountainous roads. Each night there is partying with live band music. I have not had a chance to paricipate, though 🚴.

Come to Iowa and experience RAGBRAI. I remember when there were about 5K riding. Now unofficially there can be 25K riding. You'll love it and most come back. We'd love you to visit the Hawkeye state.

You guys are adorable! Really enjoy watching your adventures. I drove through Iowa in August and stopped by the Bridges of Madison County (favorite movie of all time!). I’ve never driven on so many gravel roads in my life, but well worth it.

I think if you call Rustic Corner in Charles City and tell them which picture it is, they can give you all the details. I think the price is $250.

I think it was $175 with a vehicle support and $75 without but it should be on their website.
Cayenne and cinnamon chocolate is the best = Mexican hot chocolate. I make my own now for lattes.

So much fun! My wife and I follow your videos and love them! Question for you about RAGBRAI. We are planning on doing exactly what you and John did i.e. one person rides half the day and switches with the other person who has the van halfway. Did you register as two riders or one rider and one support driver and just switch the riding? Cant seem to get clarity on this from the RAGBRAI website. Thanks!
We registered as two riders and one support vehicle. That way both of us were covered in case we needed help on the route.

First off, you and John are such a lovely and fun couple! It's so great that you have shared interests and passions! And, thank you for this video! I've see RAGBRAI in others' videos, but yours IMHO gave me a fuller picture of the experience, and it looks like an absolute blast! But, gosh, those are fairly long-distance days of riding WITH some elevation, too! You and John are in great shape, no doubt, to be able to put those kinds of miles PLUS some climbing! Awesome! Thank you again for sharing such an enjoyable riding/social event with your viewers! Cheers!!

Since it is getting so crowded, I am surprised no other state has tried to have their own cycling event like RAGBRAI. Seems to be a profitable thing for all involved. BTW, did you notice other e bikers there?
Tons of e-bikes. There is even a company that will charge them overnight.
There are several states with cross state rides. One notable one is Georgia. It's called BRAG, bicycle ride across Georgia.
That looked amazing. John is hilarious and I am with you Debbie. I would pass on dipping my wheel in the river. Love how Canadian Tire keeps popping up in your videos, lol.
I would be worried about getting lost from one another. Other than cell phones, did you have a Plan B ?
Actually we didn't. But outside the small towns we usually could get service and John would update me on his location. We could also used the "find my friends" app.
Typically she waved good bye in the morning, we’d meet up at the meet up city to switch places, and I’d be waiting at each day’s finish line. She was easy to spot with the special helmet and visor

You hit the nail on the head; RAGBRAI is about FOOD. How much did you gain that week! You'd have a lot more hills in southern Iowa. Beautiful sunrise/sunsets, every night, including tonight. Glad you enjoyed "The Land Between Two Rivers." Missed seeing the Cheese Heads & the Bumblebees. It has came by my house three times; and you see everything. Amazing.
I think I made it out of Iowa without gaining weight. Not sure about John. 😅
Did you ride an eBike?
Yes. I think maybe 5-10% of people we’re on e-bikes.

Thanks again for bringing us to Iowa via your video. We look forward to your programs every week. Regarding the van wash, warn John that he'll have to be a lot more careful if you folks ever get a taller van. When he pulled in to the wash our hearts skipped a beat or two. Our rig requires 10 foot clearance with the AC. That extra interior height comes at a price. Anyway, it's the wrong way to modify a new van...for sure.

Curious-John rode a regular and you an ebike? I know you travel with ebikes-thinking John wanted to ride the road/hybrid. Btw-one of my favorite signs has to be burritos and smoothies.
He left his ebike at home. He mostly rides a road bike at home.

What type of bike rack and hitch do you have?
Wilco swing hitch and Hollywood rack. But we’ve had issues with the Hollywood rack. The 1Up racks look good though.

I've seen other programs on RAGBRAI but yours is from a perspective I can appreciate. You and John sharing the miles is a great way to enjoy the ride and still get a good night's rest for the next day. I am curious what watch you are wearing -- time ridden, calories burned... So many on the market to choose from. Your "survival" and enjoyment of the ride have me thinking seriously about joining the ride next year.
Apple Watch. We love them for many reasons. But if you don’t have an iPhone then not a good option. Next year will be RAGBRAI 50! Could be crazy.

So glad you had a good time! RAGBRAI is one of my favorite things to do. I haven't done it for a few years and your video is inspiring me to get back on my bike! So glad you had mild temps/humidity and a relatively flat route. Parts of Iowa can be very hilly. Thank you for your video. I know it's a lot of work! If you're ever passing through Iowa again for non-RAGRAI riding, I can recommend the High Trestle Trail (cool bridge, especially at night) and The Raccoon River Trail (longest paved loop trail in the nation). They are working on connecting the two trails and just have 9 more miles to go. I love biking in the fall when the trees are at peak color and the air is cooler and drier.
That sounds wonderful. I’ll save this to my tips file for next time.

Lots of ebikes! This was a non-judgmental event.

@@mojavelight We'll have to check it out next time but we did find the end that connects with the road to Dante's View. My microphone was giving me grief, so we headed home after 2 nights at the Trona Pinnacles.
I have a nephew in Burlington Iowa that suggested I ride the RAGBRAI 50th ….. so I am! Your video was an excellent introduction.

This reminds me of school days,holidays,a friend me,used to ride, then after some time,we decided to turn back, at times it could be 40 miles, in traffic those days it was safer,and ALL BICYCLES PAID A TAX, YOU HAS TO HAVE GOOD RUBBER, GOOD PEDALS, GOOD BRAKES,AND LIGHTS,, TIMES I WOULD GET HOME MOM RAISED HELL,AS HOW SUNDURNT I WAS,so when I was asked where we went,,it got worse you boys are MAD,, NOBODYY carried, nor was water sold !,1950s single speed bicycles, OH the times have changed ! My mom said she rode a one speed bike 50 miles. I think it may have been her last ride.
