How Hot Is It; Surviving the Northwest Heat Dome in our Campervan.

  • We jump from the frying pan into the fire when we depart Spokane, Washington during a record setting heat wave and arrive at an even hotter location. We make a detour to visit friends in Hermiston, Oregon, before making it to the Oregon Coast where temperatures plummet to half the maximums we experienced. Even the Mercedes Sprinter Van struggled to keep temperatures below 80.

    We agree with you about the Oregon State Parks! They are super nice and we really appreciated the electric hookups during a heatwave! We kept comparing California State Parks and gosh...as a Californian, it's a little embarrassing to say that Oregon does it better.

    Hey guys, thanks for sharing the "Good, Bad and Ugly" of your escape from Spokane, leaving your family to "face the music"! :) Trying to keep up with you, I just received my conversion kit for our Norcold refrigerator from propane/electric, to dual12v compressor freon. We had two shutdowns of the propane fridge from strong side winds on the 5th wheel on our way home, and hopefully we will not have to worry about that again. Will keep you posted, and if any of your viewers are interested they can see the options on JS Refrigeration (and no we don't get a kick back).

    Just came thru my neck of the woods. That was several weeks ago. Temps were crazy. In Portland an all time high of 115 degrees. Deschutes River campground has a great bike ride you might want to try again sometimes. The trains are pretty noisy, but you get used to it.

    • @FromShetoMe

    • @c2blondie
      @c2blondie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FromShetoMe Probably a really good idea. That ride has very little shade. In that heat, I would have avoided it as well. Fall is the best time to ride it. There used to be a cabin at the end, but last time we went it was burned down. Don't know if it was a forest fire or vandals. Still a very pretty ride.

      One of our viewers shared the reason behind Oregon's great beaches: "In 1967 Oregon took the lead nationally in creating legislation protecting its coastline. The state's Beach Bill declared that the entirety of the state's coastline was for public use and access and that no development could impede that access." We are fortunate for their early action.

    You missed two GREAT places on your drive down the Oregon Coast! Just down a mile south or two from the OVER crowded Tillamook Cheese Factory is the Blue Heron French Cheese Co. It is a Harvest Host and what I remember Tillamook Cheese Factory being in the mid 60's Uncrowded and farm style hospitality! I always stay there going north or south on the coast. Also at Hecta Head lighthouse, you missed the free tour of the Light House keeper's home that is a FABOULOUS B & B which I have stayed at several times over the years till I got my little RV. So much to see along the coast.

    Almost every campground we've stayed at in our trip to the Upper Peninsula is by a railroad track that moves trains all day and all night and blows their horns. We even stayed at a Harvest Host that was by a train yard and we had train engines releasing their air pressure and trains coupling. Needless to say, we didn't get much sleep that night. The direction of travel makes a difference as well. If a crossing is 1/2 mile west of you, expect to hear a whistle loud and clear from trains headed in that direction AND those coming from that direction will be much less noticeable.

    Excellent video AGAIN! Just wondering how you plugged a/c into your friends house? Does your a/c work on 15amp or did she have 30amp?
    Also we are new camper van owners and often hear about security systems, any thoughts on those? Thank you!!

    • @FromShetoMe

      Yes, AC works on 15 Amp. Just don't also run your microwave.
      As for security systems, we were shocked to find out our van didn't have an alarm so that was the first thing we had installed. I know things can be stolen in campgrounds so we just don't leave "valuables" easily available.

    Memaloose is a NW Native American word for “place of the dead”. That park is named for an island in the Columbia on which the natives placed their dead. There is at least one other place (in Astoria) with the same name.

      Stuck home until October your videos fill in the gap of wanting to be outdoors. The temp of 123 degrees is unbelievable. I can’t imagine what it feels like. How is the air quality in OR. Is it affected by all the wild fires? Here in VA we have been affected by the smoke from the fires even though we aren’t close to them. There were several days when people with medical problems were advised to stay indoors. Fl has state campgrounds as awesome as OR. One has to reserve a campsite 12 months in advance and the window for doing that is in minutes not hours. Is it easy to reserve a state campsite in OR. Viewing your videos is like a breath of fresh air. Thank you for sharing your travels.

    Yes, Oregon has many great state parks. Not surprisingly, many of the Oregon, California and Washington state parks are very popular in the summer and the state parks along the coast can be particularly hard to book a reservation. Were you able to get an "RV" site with electrical connection at Honeyman State Park? Or did you stay at a "tent" site with no electricity?

    • @FromShetoMe

    The trains that sound their horns?; just trying to clear the rails of suicides. The others?; looking for a hit and run. My all time max temp was....121; Phoenix/Tempe, 1985. I rode a motorcycle from Seattle to there; made it in 3 days. That included a day in the ER, ICU....because I suffered from heat prostration, was delirious, brain on fire, and....passed out in a taxi, after I had checked into a hotel upon arriving. I woke up packed in ice, literally, IVs going, cops there (they thought I was a drug OD), etc.
    I had NEVER been around that kind of heat before, and stupidly....didn't consider late August heat, being baked from below by engine heat, from above by 121 Mr. Sun...I was just FRIED. Body ran out of water. When they cut my clothes off....I had salt stains everywhere; just a chalky white residue. LEARNED MY LESSONS....and still to this day have LESS of a heat tolerance, so I avoid as much as possible. EASY to do....in Seattle.

    Banana slugs! My best friend hates those. When we were camping many years ago there was one on the ground and she decided that we needed to sleep in the Pinto Hatchback instead of the tent. My dad had it rigged up so you could lean the front seats forward and place a board in the gap so you could stretch out completely. I love the parks in Oregon too. I was just watching your recommended TH-cam, Bolten eBikes. He was premiering the Snapcycle on a live video. It's much like all the other $1500 ebikes. Hey, I see Pleasure way is coming out with a new one, the Sprinter Recon 4x4 van. If you see any later on, try and get a video of it....thanks! I like the looks of it, not the price but I do like the van. Take care now.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LOL. We had a Pinto wagon back in the day. Don't see those around anymore.
      I've watched PW's videos on the Recon. I'm sure it is high quality but it seems to be for a much younger audience and most young people could never afford it. We dropped off our van for service this morning and I was talking to the mechanic about 4x4 high top Sprinters and he agrees, it's really just a marketing ploy. A suspension upgrade and better tires will take you almost everywhere a 4x4 Sprinter will go. But if there is a show near us, I will definitely try to make it.
