Fujifilm 16-80mm A Year After... Let's be clear

  • Why the hate for this lens?
    Let's try to debunk some of the fake news around this travel lens from Fuji.
    The lens was released a bit more than a year ago, and i bought it on day one as i needed it for a photography workshop Iceland.
    I've been using this lens relentlessly in every possible condition and without any additional care.
    Too many people talk about stuff they don't know.
    This doesn't come as a surprise, we all know that, and the world is full of knowitall people ready to stalk about everything, with no clue.

    I’ve owned this lens for over 2 years now and have done reviews of it too. As you rightly say, it’s great for what it was designed for. Primes will most always be better than zoom lenses, so it’s pointless to compare it with them. Your pictures at the end demonstrate that its more important to have a good eye for composition and light, rather than being a pixel peeper and obsessed with edge to edge sharpness! So thanks for putting this out there! Cheers

    I have just bought this lens, second hand in mint condition. Mainly for landscapes, nature, and hiking in general. Although it was a bargain, I was a little bit worried after all the reviews and comments about it on the web. But after watching your video I decided to take the risk and go ahead.
    I must say that I fully agree with you. It has been a game changer for my nature photography. It's perfect? No, it is not, but I can do almost anything I need in the nature with it. In real conditions sharpness still hasn't been an issue for me. Maybe distortion in raw at 16mm? But its close up capabilities are wonderful, the wide range, the weather resistance, and the OIS, oh, the OIS!.... I pair it with a light xc 50-230 and a 12 mm samyang and I have in my backpack absolutely anything I need for nature in a very compact and competent set!!
    Thank you for your reviews!!

    The 16-80 is one of 7 lens I have.....and the one I use the most. Great for video. Acceptable and often time incredible image quality...depending on if I use it correctly. I use it from around 20mm to 65mm. Usually at F5 to F8.
    Prime lens I have...the Zeiss 12mm Touit 2.8...the Fugi 16 1.4....the Viltrox 23 1.4.....The Viltrox 33 1.4....the Viltrox 56 1.4 the Viltrox 85 1.8........the Mitakon Speedmaster 35mm f/0.95 Mark II Lens.....and the one zoom.....the Fugi 16-80.
    When I travel....I take all the lens....but the 16-80 is on the most.
    I agree with you Luca....the 16-80 is a great lens for what it is.

    Stunning images, thanks for doing this review, I have this lens and completely agree with you. I am not a pixel peeper that blows up pictures looking for soft corners, I am a photographer who looks at the complete picture. It is quite distressing to hear some of the negative opinions on this lens as I fear people hesitate to buy this lens and are missing out on one of the best all round lenses Fuji make. My travel kit is 10 24, 16 80, 70 300, all have ois, wr and I can use all my 72m filters if I attach my 67 72 step up ring to the 70 300. Thanks again, love your work, just subscribed.

    Well informed analysis of this great lens. Have used and tested nearly every Fuji lens. Currently have the 16-55 on an X-T4 which I initially used with. 16-80 and now returning to a X-T3 and 16-80. One to save weight and balance of lens and camera (the 18-55 is very front heavy. Optically slightly superior but not enough to keep it. For the scenarios you mention and the excellent pictures you demonstrated at the end you made a great argument for that lens. Well done. Why do people go on forums to find out about lens and camera performance. Both there and on social media which I have scrapped just regurgitate repeated cliches from who knows where. Use the lens and give it a try you will not be disappointed. For the very small number of vloggers who are out there don’t buy this lens. It is quite simple.

    I'm watching this waiting for my second copy, and looking at your awesome photos, I really can't wait! My first copy was soft throughout the entire range, looked like it never fully got focus, and the bokeh was about 2x more out of focus on the top left corner versus top right - tried it with electronic shutter, with a timer, on a tripod but it was just a bad copy. It took me a while to realize that there must be some Quality Control issue. I just hope I get a good copy this time! Great video, thank you. In these times I get quite jealous of travel photos. :)

    People are catching on to this lens. There aren't too many flooding the second hand market, and the used prices stay high. It's worth the premium over the 18-55 for myself and is mostly glued to my camera. If you need to capture moving subjects in the evening/interiors, then pick something else. However, even for night shots, you can use the OIS to capture very low ISO / low shutterspeed still images without having to lug a tripod with you.

      @@dylanwalsh4592 if you are looking to use this at night without a tripod. experiment to see the slowest shutter settings you can use. You should be able to use the lens at its widest aperture of F4 and 1/15 shutter speed or even slower. This will allow you to use lower ISO values and capture nighttime scenic shots. Of course moving objects will be blurred with slow shutter speeds but you can use that to creative effect.

    Exactly my feelings about the lens. For what it was designed, it's very good. Well build, optically okay, nice size and functionality. For general purpose photography, it's plenty enough and I find it as great upgrade from 18-55.
    Some reviewers have expectations that are probably not possible to meet. Perfect optics with brighter aperture will surely result in a lens that is huge and expensive. You expect top quality? Pick a prime of desired focal length. You want lens good enough for most applications? Get 16-80.

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography

      I could play with the Nikon, but it was a long time ago. Never tried the Sony/Zeiss.
      I never said it's a lens never done before, the 24-120 range (105 at times) is well covered in almost every system. Nor I ever mentioned other systems as I don't have the knowledge to compare them, even though before settling in Fuji I used Nikon and Canon cameras and lenses for years (not the cheap ones, but the best in their lineup).
      Bottom line, however, I still think the Fuji is a really good lens, although not perfect

    I went out to buy the 16-55 brick but bought the 16-80 f4. Why? Because the focal range suited my needs better than the 16-55. Like you, I am happy with the 16-80. It has the range I need 95% of the time. It is sharp. The star bursts are astonishing. It is a wonderful lens (for me). The 16 -55 may be optically superior but at the age of 62 and 2 heart attacks it is not what I need. Thank you for your wonderfully balanced and sensible review and for expressing some common sense - which seems to be in short supply elsewhere!

    I use a Canon SX70 if I want superzoom and just cannot be bothered shuffling enormous lenses. Apologies to all those reaching for the smelling salts with my saying this. I do not use it indoors and it can be a tricky beast to handle with too many pixels but at least Canon still hanging on in there making something. I am getting a S10 which is bundled with the 16-80 at the same price as the the 18-55 but £50 less cashback. Even if the 80mm is not razor sharp it is academic to compare with lenses with reach which is much less and if you want a wider zoom up against a fence with 18mm you cannot zoom with your feet. I fled from Fuji to m43 as there was no IBIS and they were saying it was not possible but looking forward to returning to Fuji especially with IBIS and 26mp. The m43 future is opaque as Panasonic are obviously not interested and time will tell if OM can get out anything really new.

    I went rounds wondering if this lens was the right one. I sold all my Canon prime stuff and retired. Wife and I are traveling a lot now in retirement and I don't want to carry around all the tanks anymore. Getting too old for that. I'm totally scaling down from my 5D and all the heavy primes along with the 70 200 2.8 zoom which weighs 500 pounds after shooting for an hour. Great lens but too heavy and big now. I ordered this 16-80 lens and am waiting for it too arrive. Bought a fuji xs10 along with this lens and am going to be traveling light from now on. Looks like this is exactly what I am looking for. Small light travel setup. Great for family travel.

    Everyone has unique criteria. I bought this lens, but quickly decided I will sell it. For me, I love the zoom range. But it was a little too heavy and a bit too slow at f/4. I’ve already replaced it with the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, which is lighter, faster, and focuses much closer. I don’t need OIS because I have IBIS. So those are my priorities. That said, the Fuji 16-80mm does take great, sharp images and has a fantastic zoom range.

When shooting portraits in studio with flash you 'll end up using F8 or F5.6 which is the sweet spot of sharpness for this amazing piece of gear. The colours are amazing and the focal length is perfect for portraits. I find it is a all round lens and the perfection of it is exactly this multipurpose of genres it applies to. Then again, the 10-24 is superb at 16 and 18mm :) By the way there is a review by ex-Fuji-X photographer John Armstrong, who compared the 16-80mm to his prime lenses and concluded that the differences were marginal :)

      @@LucaPetraliaPhotography Hey thanks for getting back to me and great video btw.
      Most complaints appear to be regarding the zoom wobble during video recording. But even the XF 18-55mm has the same issue less pronounced due to the shorter length, yet you barely hear people talk about that, and most non-parfocal lenses experience this. Truth is anyone who's a serious videographer will not adjust zoom whilst shooting and most just use a prime lens.
      Also not sure how much I believe any talk about bad samples, Fuji are known for their high quality lenses having pretty solid quality control, also this lens garnered a lot of attention so we would of heard about any manufacturing faults and even their XC lenses are excellent.

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get your point but I believe bad sample may exist. Me for once I was not happy with my 10-24 while everybody was praising that lens.
      For the wobble while zooming I'd say there are more complaints now because Fuji is taking video seriously now, while 5 years ago it was just an afterthought.
      I am the first to think that they should've thought about this during the design. However, it is what it is... I love the lens anyway

    thanks for the effort and sharing. the posted images are wonderful! i am researching the 16-80/4 to pair with the X-T1 and X-T2 on a 6 week travel to Australia & New Zealand. i could take my FF Sony A7R3 but am concerned about size/weight. i would also take the 55-200 (is the 70-300 that much better?) along with a pair of f2 primes-23/2 & 50/2. two bodies, 4 lens and it all fits in a small padded pack. thumbs up.

      Hi, thanks for sharing. As for the question on the telephoto... The 70-300 is better, not miles better, but better. If you can find a good deal on the 55-200 then go for it, otherwise if the difference in price is minimal, go for the 70-300. The difference in size and and weight is basically non existent

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The corner sharpness becomes important in those high resolution shots where the whole frame is the subject, such as landscapes or product shots. But the thing is many times it is overrated and considered a must have while in the real world it doesn't matter too much. I'm not saying it shouldn't be taken in consideration when testing a lens, but after testing it we focus more on real life shooting

Depending on the type of photography and the context, actual pixel peeping quality matters more. Sharp edges and some nearly invisible distorting in landscapes vs professionally paid portraits and print related work.

    Ciao Luca, thank you for your honest and straightforward feedback - this is really helpful.
    I am considering buying an XT4 and I was wondering which lens to go with between the 16-80 and the 16-55. Ideally I would like to go with only one lens as a do-it-all.
    Of course it is a question of compromises.
    Will the fixed f4 be missing out a lot to the 2.8 in indoors shooting?
    Many thanks !

      Unfortunate for extensive indoor usage the 16-55 is a better choice as the difference, even if just one stop, can be really visible in the final result.
      Another option would be getting the 16-80 and the 35mm F2 XC or the 18mm F2 for indoor use

    great review, got 1650 returned for 1680, and just came back from trip with it. Love the results, m not pro photographer, but family do happy with the final results. M printing out them anyway. But had to mention, I do find one picture shot during low light was not really good, I didn't use tripod at the time. Other than that, m happy with it, glad I returned 1655, even I knew it was the best one.

    I got this lense for 1.3k with the X-S10, really great deal. I am not a pro photographer, I just need a lens to capture the biggest focal lense possible. With this one and a 70-300mm I am done. Will just buy other chinese funny lenses from now on.

      I think you made the right choice. I tried the x-s10 yesterday, it felt like a great camera. If you're interested in the 70-300, my English version of my first impressions on this lens will be online in less than an hour

      @@LucaPetraliaPhotography great thanks, I watched a couple minutes of your Italian review, but will wait on the EN one. About channel success if it is photography based, why not doing everything in English? Unless you sell photo gear in IT and want to have a big audience there, it could make sense to jump internationally.

    I've had this lens for 3 months now and I have to say I'm really disappointed with the overall sharpness and I'm selling it. I really wanted to like it but every time I've taken it out recently I just don't trust what it's going to give me. My old 18-55mm was sharper than this lens and worked well for portraits as well. This is not a portrait lens at all. I used it for my son's graduation recently and I really wasn't happy with the results. I'm also a Nikon shooter and to be honest my old Nikkor 24-120mm outperforms this lens by a lot. I'm going to pick up a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and I think that lens will fit my needs much better especially for street photography.

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll definitely like the sigma, but at this point I would have probably gone with the Tamron 17-70. Bigger, similar weight and focal length of the 16-80, a stop brighter

    • @steveborghardt
      @steveborghardt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LucaPetraliaPhotography Thanks, but the Tamron 17-70mm is a big monster - I'm buying the 18-50mm mainly for NYC street photography and some family photos. I got into Fuji for the compact size - I already shoot with a Nikon D850. I bought the 16-80mm for it's versatility but the lens just didn't perform at all for me. I'll take the 18-50mm along with the Fuji 10-24mm and I think that combo will kill it for street. I also have the 55-200mm which I love along with the 100-400mm and the 80mm macro. I think the sigma will give me the quality coverage I need.

    I love my 16-80 as I mainly use it for photographs. For video, it does as the video says, lose focus when zooming in and out quickly. The key word is quickly. If I move the zoom really slow, it holds focus pretty good as it adjusts to the small movement rather quickly. My 16-80 came with my X-T4 and I am keeping it. I understand what it is meant for and use it that way!

    I don't understand people. They need to look for everything negative in todays equipment. It is not reasonable to compare an F4 big zoom lens to pro-grade f2.8 lenses on any system. I am a nikon shooter and I use 24-120 f4 90% of the time and I pair it with 70-200 f2.8 lens. You can't compare build quality and af speed between those two for example. And most of those people just sit around and wait for the perfect lens to have no CA or what ever is bothering them and do no photography. Look at the Ansel Adams photos for example, he had awful equipment comparing to todays kit lenses even! And his photos are breathtaking.
    I love to stumble upon channels like these. You are talking great sense about photography here. I am thinking about getting a Fuji camera or even switching to Fuji and I was really bummed to hear that this lens is bad, I just could not believe that. This is the first real talk about this lens. I would take fuji x-t3 or x-t4 (or even x-t1) with this lens anytime over my nikon d4 and 24-120 for hiking and nature photography. It is unreal weight and size difference.
    edit: Beautiful gallery Luca! I commented before the end of the video!

      You'll definitely enjoy a lot the Fuji combination you mention. Size wise it's night and day difference. Of course the d4 is built like a tank, but for everyday use it's way too big and heavy. I got out of Nikon DSLR because of that almost 10 years ago to embrace mirrorless cameras and i never regret once, even if at the beginning mirrorless were slow and rough. But I was bringing them with me everywhere, while my DSLR were staying home unless it was for a professional work.

    For me, this lens is a disappointment, maybe I had too high expectations, For portraits and handheld it gives me blurry images. For video its ok but by 30 fps 60 shutter it gives ghosting when the subject moves his head a bit faster, so unexpectable for shooting video clips. Comparing with 16mm f1,4 it is a disappointing product. I am thinking about selling it and getting some other sharper zoom for hybrid shooting, what would you recommend?

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on the camera or your shooting style.
      The best lens is probably the 16-55 but it's not stabilized, and this can make a lot of a difference.
      Any zoom is not comparable with a prime such as the 16 1.4... if that's your target you may have set the bar a little high.
      I agree that the 16-80 is not a portrait lens
