The Fujifilm owner/user community thanks you. In a world full of company sponsored “influencers” it’s nice to see a retro TH-cam style honest mans account. Sony especially is wining dining and hooking up many with a following on TH-cam. And we all know to a degree that opens the door to even the slightest bias and “quid pro quo” between company and influencer. I’m confident Fuji will kazen this and make improvements soon we hope.

Thanks for an honest, detailed review. I only shoot stills even though I've had video-capable cameras for years. I've never shot in video mode and have absolutely no intention of doing so in the future. That being the case, I think this lens is perfect for stills in the zoom range it covers.

@@pandoraefretum That 13.77 is rounded off to 14. The text was only a misprint in pal2tech's video, having a point in between the 1 and the 4 (1.4), instead of just 14 inches. People make mistakes, just like you have an extra s in focusing!

I was really rooting to have this lens since its release. . I thought its a really good walk all round lens due to its focal range. Shame that fuji didn't send you the lens for free (hopefully they will send the xt5 free instead!) for all the reviews and lessons you make for the community which I totally appreciate. Chris, you took out a lot of frustration from many users of the tutorials you give that fuji did not provide. Many thanks

I'm wedding videographer/filmmaker and I own this lens. My pros/cons would be
    Pros:
-I can leave it on my camera and worry only on my work, which is finding the best composition on the fly
-16mm let me shoot some nice wide shoots
-The image from it is a solid 8, not as good as the 23mm 1.4 or other primes but superior to other zoom lenses from other brands.
    -Build quality is a 10
-Stabilization is great even on 80mm
-The zoom barrel is kinda soft, which is good for soft zoom in/out
-Autofocus is great, can be quick and snappy or soft and cinematographyc
    Cons
-This lens should cost 500 brand new and used 350
-On video, when you zoom in or out, even if you do it softly the corners show some distortion which is corrected immediately but it is noticeable
-On video, Autofocus when zooming is unreliable (i leave it on manual and I zoom softly to not lose focus point. If I zoom faster the focus is lost)
-For me 80mm is not far enough, but 16mm is great for a zoom lens

Hello, how is the situation with 16-80 after year? Still have focusing issues in video mode or firmwares fixed it? I want to buy X-T3 mostly for object photography, but I can't decide which one is better: 18-55 or 16-80. Thanks for answer, really need your advice, because I couldn't find good comparison between this two lens.

Excellent review. Assuming you may have decided to keep this lens, I have 2 questions: 1) did the subsequent firmware releases improve some of the concerns you found in your initial tests? 2) On the X-T3, which IS Mode do you prefer for photography when using this lens? Continuous or Shooting Only?

Not grabbing focus well all the time and very soft around the edges. I’m on the fence as I was originally going to the 18-55 but liked the idea of 80mm, particularly as a lens to take on holiday

  • @XavierMinguellaPhotography

I bought that lens past week and I love it. I was considering to get the 18-55 but in that case I prefer use my 18 f2 + 35 f1.4 + V56 f1.4, so in fact I wanted a relatively compact lens and not really heavy, in fact face to face it has the same size of a 10-24 (when it is not extended of course).
So, the question it was, a 16-55 f2.8 or a 16-80 f4 OIS, the 16-55 it is a great lens but for me it is like a 18-55, so I prefer an 18 f2 to a 16 f2.8. Optical stabilizer and dimensions are quite good in that lens so in my X-E3 it is perfectly balanced or I feel that in my case, the weight difference versus the 18-55 it is not that big, but versus a 16-55 it is, my first body it is a X-H1 and as it happens in your X-T3 (or T4) it is perfect.
What about distortion? I like what it does at 16mm and even at 80mm. Sharpness, it is sharp, I did not make a full test but corners at 16 are pretty good in Street Photography and then for portraiture you get sharp images in the center and a lovely bokeh.
I tested what you showed about video, well, I did not do any video because I do not make videos but through the EVF I did not noticed that, maybe because my zooming it was more slow than yours, but video makers are not use to use that "technique", sometimes they use it but not many, I don't know I think I am not going to make videos like this, just because I work in a different way.
So conclusion, as the Canon shooter I was I like how it feels in hand, the Nikon zoom direction it is very confortable and probably my next zoom it will be the 50-140 just for that confortable sensation, as a Fringer adapter user I think it is a better option to a Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 VC G2 even if I prefer the 70-200 focal range in the APS-C Fujifilm sensor. A very nice zoom lens, well built, weather resistant, silent, fast and accurate, aperture ring, for me it is an excellent choice if you are seeking a compact and light lens.
By the way, how it works that lens the image stabilizer with cameras with ibis? When I turn off the ibis in my X-H1 the OIS it doesn't work so, just image it is stabilized when in my H1 it is in continue mode, may I upgrade the last firmware for the camera?
Thank you for your tests in TH-cam.

Thanks Chris for the review and your thoughts on the new 16-80mm lens from Fuji. I've been tempted to consider this lens, but the 18-55mm did so well for me at Disney World that I'm more than willing to take a wait and see position after listening to your points. The fact that the lens is also on back order at most camera stores is also a factor. I'm more likely to take my money and put it towards the Fuji 16mm 1.4 now and hold off on any more zoom lenses. Thank you for you excellent review and style of presentation, it is very much appreciated.
As you wisely predicted, I am viewing this review in Jan 2021, so some time after the event. I have not received my lens - it is stuck in a logistics gyre because of the global shipping disruption. That said, I got it as a kit with my X-T4 and I observe that both the camera and lens have gone through several iterations of firmware updates, including some to address video performance. However, I do not shoot video, sot that issue (if it is still an issue) does not apply to me. I do take note to of the corner softness, but prefer to deal with that and get the extra focal range for an enhanced walk-around performance.
The other lens I got is the very new Tamron 18-300 lens for the x-mount, which offers even more flexibilty and so far the reviews I have seen indicate that it performs well above expectation for such an ambitious focal range. The proof will be in the use...

I concur with everything you say about this lens including the current zoom focussing problem but am very confident this is an easy fix for a firmware update.
I have used virtually all Fuji lenses including many samples of the kit lens. Apart from the slight drop in corner sharpness wide open this lens blows the 18-55 out of the water. Before I get slammed for saying this please note in my opinion 18mm is a boring and limited wide angle range compared to 16mm. 55mm too is so limiting because at 55mm the kit lens is very flat in micro contrast and not terribly sharp. At least this 16-80 lens is fantastic as a portrait lens at 55mm with the bonus of 80mm short telephoto and who cares about corner sharpness with telephoto. All zooms are at their weakest at the shortest and longest ends. (Except for perhaps the 16-55 which is fantastic but has no OIS and weighs a tonne). The bokeh of this 16-80 lens is quite surprisingly attractive as you mentioned. The close focus is a bonus I didn’t expect and the ergonomics fitted to an X-T2 or an X-T3 is perfect. Great review and love your enthusiasm.👍

Tony Elsom Hi Tony why are people getting all negative about this lens. All zooms are at their softest at each end of the zoom range. Too many youtubers winge on about the results of pictures of brick walls and lens calibration charts. They are meaningless when it comes to actual photography. There are so many other features that make a lens great. Colour, micro-contrast, monochrome reproduction, tonal range, flare, close focus, handling.........etc. Use the wretched things rather than make judgements about amateur you-tubers who may have their own style and needs. Pal2tech is very good at presenting an unbiased balanced review. He is realistic about expectations and is actually very complimentary about this lens even if it is not perfect.

Hello :) the most surprising thing is that people started talking a lot about video zoom problem with this lens, where you have the same or worse problem on 16-55 2.8 and also 50-140 2.8, even on MF. Your image get blurred while zooming becoming unusable, new 1.02 seems to not solve at all this problem, to be is kind of "design problem" for most fuji zoom lenses. I don't have this problem on cheaper Lumix kit zoom, they dont' blur the image while zooming, then the parfocal factor is another problem but image remains clear on other lenses during the zoom process on my cheap lumix zoom.

First time I stumble upon your videos and channel while surfing TH-cam. Clear and concise video! I guess the lens would be a good deal when it comes kitted with a body in the near future, and hopefully after Fuji having fixed that video zooming issue. The 18-55 was already well distorted and yet it is sharper in the corners than the 16-80 which shows significant amount of blurriness due to distortion corrections. But as you pointed out, great option for travel and obtain beautiful images without too much pixel peeping.

Really you can't expect most any Fuji mirrorless zoom lens (varifocal lenses) to stay in focus whilst zooming. The best you can do is keep it in continuous focus if you're going to rely on zooming, or you will lose focus slightly. Even the 18-55 will be wildly unreliable if you're manually focusing whilst zooming. But the wobble is very strange though. I would expect it to just smoothly go a bit out of focus like most every other varifocal lens. Good catch. Can you tell me, how does zooming compare to the 18-55 when continuous focus is on? //A

    • @pal2tech
      @pal2tech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Andrew, thanks...and good point. I shot some test footage this comparing 16-80mm with 18-55mm at AF-C (continuous) with all other settings the same, etc. and here's the footage: www.pal2tech.com/downloads/16-80mm-review/afc-demo.mov I was going to include that, plus another problem I noticed with exposure variance while zooming in manual that was much worse than 18-55mm but just ran out of time. These YT videos take so long to make!. Anyhow, from what I can see here, both do it, but the 16-80mm crosses over the 'unacceptable' line for me since the entire frame seems to wobble vs. the 18-55mm which acts more like a standard varifocal lens -- at least on my monitor when I'm playing it back.

@@AndrewGoodCamera It really is... incredible difference. Crazy thing is they just published a firmware update today - very vague description on their site, just mentioning "Fix of slight defects". I tested this (and actually created another video review on that) but it did not fix the video focus wobble issue unfortunately.

For minimum focus distance, one of your two measurements is off by a huge error. It is 1.15 FEET, which equates to 35cm. 35mm would have equated to ~1.4 inches, but it is actually 35cm. Good video though and I appreciate the work you put in.

    Nice review.
While the lens does have this strange focus issue when zooming, it's not designed to be a video parfocal zoom like the Fujinon MK lenses. It's a stills lens. Even the 18-55 has some flicker when zooming. I can see it on the test you did. It even looks like the white balance was changing. I wouldn't use those shots in video production. Maybe a home video.
A true parfocal zoom lens is a whole different lens and expecting MK zoom performance on an $800 still lens seems to me to be unrealistic. I will say it's distracting and if it can be fixed that would be a good thing.
My main lens for video has been the Canon 24-105. My copy is parfocal but not all are. Again it's designed for stills, not video. I also don't zoom when shooting video on a stills lens. It's practically impossible to get a smooth slow pull/push with the zoom ring on the lens. I use the parfocal advantage on the 24-105 for getting several different focal lengths fast without having to refocus. Never use the zoom in the edit.
I just got my copy and like it a lot. I do a lot of product shots for reviews and the extra reach is very helpful, plus the close focus is excellent. I don't see using the kit lens much anymore.

    • @plasticonegro
      @plasticonegro 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Several years ago I shot a short film with a Canon 5D Mark II, with the 24-105mm lens, and there's a shot that includes a fast zoom from 24 to 105, and there's absolutely no problem with the focus during movement, it's keeping the same sharpness and aperture all time.
Because of the way I shoot video, due to the tone/mood that I want to give sometimes, to zoom is something that I, occasionally, like to use, considering that using it appropriately can be a great narrative and / or expressive resource. Well, I bought this 16-80mmF4 $1000 lens and it is impossible to do so with good results. Isn't that wonderful?
Of course the Fujinon MK series was particularly designed for video/cinema work, for example there's no focus breathing in that case, but never before I had this issue zooming with any other lens, no matter if it was more designed for photography or video. Regarding my experience, and after I asked to others, this is absolutely abnormal. It is a bug and, and if is related with firmware, it should be corrected as soon as possible.

I noticed the artifacts in your photos. There's something about the way Adobe products process Fujifilm raw files. Instead, try the free 30 day capture one software. You'll see what I'm talking about. Fujifilm cameras produce much better bokeh and skin, up close, than what you are seeing in lightroom. If CaptureOne has too steep of a learning curve for you, try On1. It's cheaper and processes similar to CaptureOne. BTW, I also shoot Fujifilm. Good Vlog. I felt it was very honest.

Yep, agree. Part of that is my fault -- I was over-sharpening because they were process in final cut pro, then compressed by TH-cam -- and I didn't want to lose details. I am interesting in this lens for general winter outdoor use.We have in Switzerland usually a lot of snow. Sometimes strong wind with snowing. Great videos and photos can be taken under such conditions. Kit lens can survive these conditions but the life expectation of the lens decreases. "Zooming in and out - that's a big part of making video". ? It can be only me, but I don't remember quality cinema/movie or video production include zooming in and out while recording. If I recall correctly the productions where the zooming in and out is used frequently are those cheap, flashy music videos or really low budget serials mostly. But again I am an architect, not a video or cinema specialist, and dont want to make anybody feel wrong. Just sharing my experience from memory. 😊

i prefer plastic lens hoods because they flex when bumped and absorb some of the shock. metal would either transfer all the shock to the lens (increased risk of damage) or dent (permanent damage to hood). plastic hoods flex, bounce, make noise, and then bend back into place all in a fraction of a second. it's just physics.
my fave lens hood of all time is the Sigma 56mm lens hood. that thing is incredible

Have lived with a single prime lens for a long time (23mm f/1.4) and really enjoyed that focal length so much so I got the f/2 version as well for WR and smaller weekend carry. But after I got a 50-140 for some event work I started missing the longer reach when away on casual / travel weekends where it was too much to carry such a large lens. I first considered adding the 50mm f/2 but not a huge fan of changing lenses in and around the city. So I have ordered this lens (after debating the 16-55 and the 18-55 but the size, OIS + WR convinced me). KEYWORD: PARFOCAL (A parfocal lens is a lens that stays in focus when magnification/focal length is changed. There is inevitably some amount of focus error, but too small to be considered significant). I have found more info on the problem - which it might not be after all. According to Martin Heilbron the feature we are looking for is not available in these lenses, but admitedly some perform better then others in this regard. Does the additional range is worth the variable aperture, or does the constant aperture is worth the slightly reduced zoom range and slightly increased price?

The 18-55 kit lens is Not hard to beat but it is great value for the money and not too shabby overall. It's the old Cadillac vs Chevy argument ...they both get you there , one with just a little more style.
