The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is a Turbo-Electric Sledgehammer in a Cutthroat SUV Segment

  • The 2022 #HyundaiTucson gets some bold new changes for the all-new fourth generation. ‪@hyundai‬ heard complaints from previous owners and the result is a #TucsonHybrid and #TucsonPHEV that looks to beat its main rivals from Toyota and Honda. The new #Tucson is anything but forgettable and it should do extremely well at chipping away sales from its Japanese rivals.

    I’m not even remotely looking at this segment for a new car, but this thing is VERY nice! If I needed a commuter, this is at the top. I love Hyundai’s and Kia’s safety suite with the side view cameras, man. That interior! The lux, comfort and convenience features! Hyundai only has to overcome the brand loyalty stubbornness of Toyota and Honda owners to become a winner in the segment.

      It’s easier for a company that was used to making horrific quality cars inside and out, to make themselves look good among the competition, by focusing more on their quality. To the consumer, it looks like a MASSIVE change, because they weren’t used to a Hyundai being “good quality”.
      To companies like the Europeans, they’ve been making superb quality cars, especially interior wise, for decades, so they don’t really stand out as much. They’ve always been nice...

      In Arizona the queue for the Rav4 Hybrid is getting absurd. I want a Rav4 XLE Hybrid Premium... the dealer tells me there are 12-15 people ahead of me in the queue. Also the Rav4 Prime is simply unavailable in Arizona and will remain so throughout 2021. If Hyundai can meet demand they will make out like bandits with their Hybrid.

    • @davidgapp1457
      @davidgapp1457 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@sammyjammy6647 I've driven the Rav4 Hybrid and the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid. While I have reservations about the wisdom of the turbo, the Tucson Hybrid has the Rav4 beat in almost every area. Handling, brakes and power are all clearly superior in the Hyundai. Styling is personal, but to my eye the Tucson is a much better looking vehicle. As I'm an engineer and restore vintage cars as a hobby, I took a really good look at both vehicles, much to the consternation of the respective dealers! I see absolutely nothing wrong with the construction and overall design of either vehicle, although the electrical system on the Rav4 is considerably more complex. I do prefer the integrated electric drive-train / eCVT planetary gear transmission on the Rav4, but the Hyundai solution looks to be a capable solution. Finally, the Hyundai does not rely on electric motors for the rear axle - so anyone wanting a truly off-road capable vehicle might want to look at the Hyundai. The other big drawback on the Tucson is the lack of a spare tire - the Rav4 Hybrid can carry a full size spare. To me it's ridiculous to manufacture an off-road and back-country capable vehicle WITHOUT a spare. What were they thinking?
      Your 'the Hyundai is shite' requires an explanation. Certainly I could see nothing to substantiate your view. If anything the Rav4 is the more 'plastic' of the two vehicles. 90% of the trim is plastic; held on by a combination of press-studs and a few screws. The rear 'bumper' (the metal behind the plastic, is the flimsiest I've ever seen. Fortunately I took mine off and replaced it with an OEM tow hitch which has a way stronger cross-beam and attaches by 8 bolts to the subframe - could make the difference between a write-off and a relatively affordable repair in cases of mild shunts. The Hyundai has a stronger looking rear frame arrangement which I suspect would fare better in any kind of rear collision.
      As for 'queue' the Rav4 has momentum. Until the Hyundai it really had no challengers - the CR-V is a good vehicle and would appeal to Honda loyalists, however it is eclipsed in most areas by the Rav4. I expect the Tucson Hybrid and the Tucson PHEV are going to steal Toyota's thunder and maybe force a redesign of the ridiculous (and poor aerodynamic) exterior. The interior is also let down by a low resolution (and generally far too small) screen, a power seat that in most trims doesn't have seat memory and the weakest interior lighting of any car I've seen in the past 10 years - especially the cargo bay.
      In the end I DID buy a Rav4 Prime as I could no longer wait for the Tucson PHEV. Yes, it's good, but the buying experience was a nightmare and the SE is disappointingly equipped, even will all available packages. Still no power passenger seat or seat memory or 6.6kW charger or 1500W inverter. I consider the Prime XSE but I didn't want the panoramic roof and to get the features I wanted... I would've been forced to take the panoramic roof! Very poor packaging of fundamentally disparate features! Do I like the Rav4 Prime? Yes. It's basically a hybrid on steroids and my recommendation to ANY Rav4 buyer is to get this version. Worth the hassle of shipping the car across country! However when the Tucson PHEV becomes available I expect demand for the Prime will pale rather quickly as Hyundai are bringing their PHEV to ALL States, not just the 12 or so who followed California with zero emission regulations.

      @@davidgapp1457 without a doubt this is one of the most thoughtful replies I’ve ever seen from a TH-cam commentor. I’m not sold on the Hyundai brand and I would need to be more familiar and confident with their track record of reliability. I don’t wanna put my money into something that’s new and questionable, especially the Tucson which has a turbo. Toyotas reputation for reliability is legendary AND the other huge factor for me was the resale value. After 5 years the depreciation is maybe 39%? Finally as you said before, looks are subjective, and the rav4 5th gen looks ruggedly handsome especially from the front. Oh yeah the one I made a deal on is being shipped from Japan, an XLE hybrid with all the packages in Lunar Rock for 31k OTD

    My best friend just got one- she (we) love it... it is very spacious. It's bigger than a typical compact suv but smaller than a large one. The headlight design turns alot of heads. You can customize the dash, the sound system is of great quality. I personally love the design of the vents. Being able to just open the lift gate without waving under a sensor is a great feature (especially if your hands are full) It has wireless Apple play & Android auto. Different drive modes to include snow (which will come in handy living in PA).. Gets great gas milage!!!
    Cons we agreed on was- Turn signals are now low on the rear bumper (and side mirrors but no arrow just blinking led lights that barely wrap around) Heated steering wheel is not included in the premium package neither is passenger power seats (has the manual pull lever) My personal con is it not having a V6... (however it is light enough for it to drive well as 4 cylinder) Oh and since its so new- weathertech does not have custom mats for it yet....
    Overall- its an awesome vehicle and our gripes are what we call "first world problems" I am seriously considering to trade in my vehicle for one... (Hyundai also has the best warranty)

The 2.5 is adequate for everyday driving but coming from a 14' Kia Optima SX Turbo makes it feel slow. Overall I agree that this is a fine compact with a premium feel in terms of tech, looks, and ride quality. And Sofyan isn't lying about the rear legroom. I'm 6'3 and I can sit behind myself without my knees pressed against the seat. One friend said she felt like she was flying first class with the room combined with a steep long recline angle. I recently purchased a 2023 Tucson Hybrid on 12/3/22. I loved the car when I test drove it and watched hours of reviews from TH-cam. One thing that every single review failed to mention, is the issue Hyundai has with their panoramic sunroofs, as well as the small piece of glass inbetween the sunroof and the front windshield. There have been class action lawsuits filed against Hyundai because apparently these pieces of glass like to spontaneously burst. This happened to my 2023 Tucson after just ONE WEEK of driving. Walked out to my car ready to head to work, and noticed this giant crack in the glass, expanding from one end all the way to the other end. Car is back at the dealership right now, allegedly getting fixed at no cost to me. But some of the personal stories I've read online make me hesitant to believe that Hyundai is actually going to cover it. I'll come back with more details once I get an update. But just wanted other buyers to be aware of this common issue. I am not very pleased.

    Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is absolutely killing it in recent years. They deserve all the accolades they're receiving, especially since they offer the best warranty in the business. PHEV is a vehicle segment that I am personally looking to purchase in the next couple years, so I am very excited to see how the plug-in version of the Tucson performs. Although they should have done better with the electric range, 32 miles trails the Rav4 Prime's range by 10 miles, which is an unforced error on their part. However, if the price is significantly lower on the Tucson PHEV, I might be able to overlook the lacking range.

    I am in a deep love for the new Tucson. So edgy and so dynamically styled. LOVE that interior, but the exterior wins it for me.
    Hoping to review one here in the coming weeks. Might make a combo review if they get hybrids in soon.
    But I do have one thing to say Sofyan, I have a 2016 Tucson, and I'm by no means tiny (I'm 6' 2"), and I have lots of legroom in the back of my Tucson. Granted I sit closer to the wheel than a 6'2" guy would. If I pull my seat as far back as it can, I somehow still manage to fit. Not much wiggle room, nor do my knees go into the back of the seat, but I still fit just fine.

      It’s frustrating. I hated them when I started seeing them on some Land Rovers and Kia Sportages. I find it difficult to anticipate traffic changes from several cars back because the cars ahead of you are blocking the turn signal that is too low to the ground. And when that car gets dirty you can’t see the signals at all because the lights are so low and covered in junk.

      Yeah they've done it as far back as 2011 Sportage, and before them other manufacturers as early as in the 90s too. I really don't like it, it takes a second longer to notice turn signals when you're expecting to see them in main taillight assembly. Kia/Hyundai now do it on majority of their cars and to me it seems like a bad design.

    • @NovaResource
      @NovaResource 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree about the rear turn signals but I think the lo were headlight is how every car should go. Lower headlights are better at lighting the road in foggy situations and don’t blind people that still drive lower vehicles like regular coupes and sedans.

    Hey Hyundai! If you're reading this, please put the turn signals back where they belong. It's ridiculous to have them that low in the bumper. In heavy stop-and-go traffic, the person behind you may not realize that you're getting ready to make a right or a left turn.
    I'm seriously looking at the Tucson, the Santa Fe, and possibly the Santa Cruz. I really like the interior on the Tucson and the Santa Cruz better than the Santa Fe. If the Santa Cruz's bed was a little longer, I wouldn't be looking at the other two. Also, can't beat that 5000 pound tow capacity.

    Another advantage to the hybrid model, that was not mentioned, is fuel range between gas fill ups. Both the 2.5 naturally aspirated engine and the 1.6 turbo/electric have the same tiny 13.7 gallon gas tank. The 2.5 gets about 397 miles to the tank. But the Turbo/electric, with the same tank capacity, gets about 506 miles before fill up. 109 more miles. With that range I could drive from the Ohio East border, after a fill up, to Port Jervis on the Pennsylvania East border and New Jersey and still have enough gas left over to fill up there.
