Okay let me just clear this up. Na is elemental sodium. When elemental sodium comes into contact with Cl (chlorine) is becomes NaCl (sodium chloride) the exothermic reaction produces heat and crystalline sodium chloride. It's an easy to understand chemical reaction and even easier to do on paper. Table salt is NOT sodium. Table salt is NaCl (sodium chloride). Elemental sodium is incredibly reactive and usually reacts with the atmosphere simply by just sitting there undisturbed to form sodium oxide (NaO2. NOT to be mistaken with NaOh) Elemental sodium and table salt are two totally different things

bolt moon actually there is two *equal* parts of NaCl. Na+ Cl- (sodium with a positive charge and chlorine with a negative charge) There are 2 chlorine atoms and 2 sodium atoms in the structure of table salt. Please research next time.

9th grade science class, (1979), Science teacher had the class in groups of 3. We were to observe the effect of sodium in water. We used those real thick bowls from a motor and pestle. Everyone was awestruck when it started fizzling. The teacher instructed usevto put the smallest piece into the bowl of water. She checked everyone before it was dropped. We blew our bowl apart into about three or four pieces.
