The sad thing is that people work hard to buy their vehicles. On top of that they use their cars to get to work. If the car is paid off and you no longer have theft insurance you are stuck. Thieves don't consider the devastating consequences their actions cause. Car theft convictions need to be harsher and have minimum mandatory sentences even for first time offenders.

People seem to think just because it has 4 wheels that it must be reliable. Kia and Hyundai have proven that. Any part that you buy for it is no better than what came off of it. The vehicles are so thrashed that parts in a wrecking yard aren’t of any value.. engines that are full of metal shavings, gummed up because they have never had the oil changed, etc.. this is why wrecking yards don’t want the liability and stuff whole Korean cars straight into the crusher. You will never see a Korean car in a wrecking yard that’s been mined of parts- there is no value in them.

Except people are going to go to the internet and are going to start complaining, other people start learning about this stuff and then boom, Kia gets a really bad reputation, which in the long run will hurt sales and also like the guy before me said, it will make insurance companies to increase their rates on Kia cars just to be safe, which will also hurt sales because people would not pay outrageous prices for a cheap car.
That's the reason why car brands always make recall as soon as a problem gets found with any of their models it can hurt sales later.

@@dkrampage2933 I don't disagree, and I'm sure Kia Motors of America sees it that way as well. Doubt Korea sees it like that though. And they ultimately call the shots.
The only reason I don't totally agree with you is that recalls aren't some arbritrary thing that manufacturers do. NHTSA tells the OEM that they are out of compliance with emissions, safety, or other regulation. If it is "Volutary", that means the OEM went to NHTSA and said "Hey, we aren't compliant and we are recalling" and NHTSA said "Yeah, you are right, proceed". Because of this, if they were to do something free of charge, it would be some sort of voluntary campaign that they initiate, manage, and report on, themselves.
Yes, I know, i'm being picky with words. But in my line of work for another OEM, the "R" word is taken very seriously.

@@abrahamperez8565 MOST consumers have terrible locks even on their homes (which both cost more and house family, which is arguably more important). I was picking house locks since diapers... Now with $20 you can buy a bumpgun and pretty much anyone is getting into your house in just a few seconds.
If you watch LPL (Lock Picking Lawyer), he goes over showing several bump keys that open all Ford models, all Volkswagen group models, etc. Also thanks to Lichi tools you can not only pick but decode (to properly make a key to come back later) and get almost any car with ease. I've also CAD designed my own key based on a photo and traced it then 3d printed it. I don't think you understand how all locks are literally child's play (there is one safe I was never able to crack, but even as a child my grandfather for Christmas bought me a mechanics stethoscope so I could hear tumblers). I wasn't that much into lock picking, but it came super useful when my dad would forget the keys to a lock and driving a tractor back a few miles would take an hour, and picking was faster. I still to this day cannot open a combination lock if I know the numbers, but I can do it behind my back in a few seconds (those are super easy to pick, but its just another example of the illusion of security)

As a former car thief I have to say, though, that this ignition system's design is way too easy to exploit.
Normally & WAAAY back in the day I needed a minimum of 3 tools PLUS drill bits to break into a car's ignition system, & that's just the break-in.
Once I'm in & depending on the make & model I could have to spend as much as 4-5 minutes starting the car.
These Kia Boys are exploiting a ridiculously hackable ignition system that was built this way to save the manufacturer money.
P.S. take it from a former player in this game that almost nothing beats The Club, particularly The Club system that goes over the accelerator pedal! Back in the day if I saw either of those things, I walked. They are defeatable, yes, but not by a street car thief. You need frikkin' Jaws Of Life to pry one of those. I never heard of anyone who could successfully pry a Club off of a completely circular steering wheel without cutting the wheel, which takes a lot of time.

Crazy... I’m an appraiser for an insurance company and we literally just had a meeting two days ago letting us know to expect a sharp rise in claims involving stolen Kia’s/Hyundai’s. We were not aware about the “Kia Boys” challenge though.
*Edit* There are so many appraisers per insurance company and so many different insurance companies out there that not one single insurance company is taking the entire brunt of this trend so yeah. When you consider how many claims get submitted per day for a ton of different types of reasons, it takes a lot for things like this to start making a dent. However that doesn’t mean we’re just now seeing these claims. Oh we’ve been seeing them. We just didn’t know why these vehicles were suddenly being targeted besides the fact that they’re easy to steal. I mean, if they’re that easy to steal then why has this only been going on for a few months and not years? Thanks to Donut, now I know the “why” side of it. Hard to follow car trends on TikTok when you don’t have TikTok I guess.

And the USB-A connector just happens to fit over the shaft protruding from the actual ignition switch. A needle nose pliers will turn it as well. And yet, the thieves were able to steal it and drive it away with ease. Fortunately, some very kind and friendly cops helped me out, but it sucks to know my car was so vulnerable to this. At work we had a forklift with no key, and we hotwired it every day to get it running. Immobilizer is great but the problem with these cars is the ignition cylinder is so trivially easy to break. Maybe the explanation is that the ignition was designed to be used with a chip, and it didn't matter that it was held together with plastic. Then someone had the brilliant idea to save money by using the same (cheaper) part for both chip and non-chip versions. Somewhere along the line, the answer comes down to cost per unit.

The Terminator movies probably have one of the most accurate hot wiring sequence in an action movie because he rips off the steering column cover instead of just having random wires come out of nowhere

Needs to be a nationwide recall on these models. But the sad truth is that they don’t care. The cars are already out of their hands . Despicable shady business practice. Kia owners should band together and lawyer up.

They should make Kias self destruct when stolen like this. That would take a lot of juvenile delinquents out before they commit worse crimes.
