I did this yesterday at my local skate park, its been 14 years since I last really skateboarded. I have gained weight since then, went down a bank at high speed and I bailed by just jumping off and landed all my weight on my left ankle, Needless to say, I suck and my ankle hurts but I'm going back to practice stopping by trying to power slide.

Same and when I did that I fell and had to get an x-ray to see if my ankle was broken. Thankfully, it wasn’t but if I hadn’t fallen correctly I could have broken more than one bone...

Protip: powerslides does not work on rough street surfaces. I only use them at skateparks because the ground is so smooth. I usually put my weight on the nose as I go for the slide on a rough surface

Yesterday I discovered a really fast way of stopping.
Instead of trying to slow down, you are going to go faster. Then, when you see a tiny rock, go so that the skateboard touches it. Then, all you need to do is go backwards and you will stop instantly.
The only downside is that you may hurt your back on the long run

Hey, amateur longboarder here. From what I know, we have different names for those slides. Front facing powerslides are called a heelside slide, and a back facing is a toeside. Also it's just a hands down (insert side) slide. *A quick PSA for all of the street skaters out there:* I don't recommend doing any hands down slides at all. Longboarders wear slide gloves for a reason. (first hand experience here: I tried to do a slide in a parking garage without gloves. I was only going like 12mph but I scraped most of the skin off of my palms and I had a pebble stuck in my left hand. Wear slide gloves kids. Even if theyre just hockey pucks glued to gardening gloves like mine)
Strawberry AIDS I switch between park skating and downhill longboarding.
I've been able to do some of the hands down slides while going slowly without the gloves, but I just don't touch the ground near as firmly. it'll still get a little hurt and I wouldn't dare risk it at high speeds... just wanna say it is possible.

I would like to see a tutorial on the number 9 spot "Pop In Da Hand" please.
I learned to snowboard years before I even picked up a skateboard so when I was around 17 and started skating I found backside powerslides rly easy, as I feel more comfortable using the front edge of a snowboard to stop backside power slides were much easier for me to learn as I kinda had a bit of confidence.

I watched some clips and I’m definitely not as good as they are depicted lmao I can squeak a power slide out but not rly hold it but I mean I mainly ride my freestyle board so it’s not something I’m rly doing. I’ve given them ago on my mates long board and fallen on my arse more than a few times so I’m definitely no expert.

just did no.10 today down a hill
since I've only been skating for a few months i pretty much to a mix between the foot scrape and the jump off, i either jump off and catch the board with my foot or i put my foot down and a little bit forward and just come to a complete stop by taking the weight off my board but still keeping my foot on it and putting all of my weight into stopping dead, this way my board doesn't leave my front foot but i also don't have to scrape, although trust me after a good session or even just skating in town/city where you have to stop for traffic and pedestrians constantly, it makes your feet hurt so so so damn bad by the end of it, I've broken bones I've had toenails ripped off my toe but i will say a few hours after those things, you're fine, but your feet are gonna kill you for a week, I'm currently trying to find a different technique hence why I'm here

Put your back foot on the edge of the tail and your front foot between the front bolts and the center/middle of the board. Pop up like your doing a nose grab but land your back foot on the ground as your grabbing the nose of the board.

I've seen people powerslide, footbrake, and handbrake on longboards. I think Penny can only apply footbrake and possibly handbrakes
What’s the best method to stop when you’re going pretty fast? My friend took my hill bombing when I was a beginner (and I still am a beginner) and I couldn’t slow down. He taught me to use that side brake thing where you put your foot out to the side and skid it along the ground. I didn’t get the technique properly, I went to fast, my board wobbled, and I fuckin wiped out. How can I prevent that?

So what about on a nickle board (or other board with soft wheels) at a decent rate of speed. Slides I don't think are gonna happen. The only ones I can do are dragging my foot and the reverse kick.
The Metal Butcher I longboard everywhere, footbraking is pretty good since you can use it to just decelerate too, but there's a way to do it without sliding your foot that I can't quite explain. I put a hole in the entire back half of my pushing shoe by dragging it so now I don't.
Pretty much I just put my back foot down like to push but with a bit more downward force and not quite as much forward push. You just do a few and they quickly knock your speed down a little at a time

when I try the side scrape my foot just grips and starts skipping forward
Caleb Heney don't put your whole weight on that foot, you need to barely touch the ground that way it will create enough friction to make you stop and won't make you skip
A good way to practice that is to literally ride on one foot and try to balance. With your front foot (foot on the front bolts) and just ride slowly standing on that one foot, once you learn to balance good. Foot braking is so much easier. I can do it going almost 30mph now 😅

Seems like the side scrape is the best way for someone who can’t powerslide. If you street skating on a hill a need to burn some speed I find it’s a pretty safe method
