@3:30 "I didn't grow up using computers . . . " @Tinman's Saws - I don't think you entirely grew up at all. That's why I love watching your channel! Stay healthy my friend, and send my love to the Tin Lady and to the Min-Tin. Much respect.
Great video Tinman. The oops factor is always there when you're doing something new. That was hilarious. Keep working on it and I'm sure you will get it right. I certainly would look at getting a couple of those pipes.
I’ve tested many pipes and with the stock can and a single tube pipe seems to give 8-10% over bone stock. The Rowdy pipes I’m building now (similar to the Bearclaw original design) give a noticeable increase over the pipe / can design and absolutely annihilate the stock muffler. Only 2 drawbacks are increased fuel usage and loud (but not any louder than a straight shot or a bark box). If I burn an extra $1 worth of gas I’d say it is well worth it for the increased production and enjoyment (snappier throttle / way more torque). A good set of earplugs or muff is definitely in order. I find that the output is deeper and more throaty with no high pitched sound like the others
@@justinweaver8787 I’d say from seat of the pants it’ll give 5+% over a factory dual port which gives about 7-8% over the stock. Again I don’t have a Dyno to give precise numbers but I wood say 12% over stock peak torque. Way better throttle response and low-end grunt - only videoed the 272xp so some saws may gain more or less … the epa friendly saws may not pickup as much performance as an older non - stratos saw simply because of the design but there are other flow tricks you can use on the intake side to enhance the performance for sure!
Tinman, if you are interested, I can cut you some exhaust flanges. I am an automotive performance tech and master fabricator, but I also love saws. I would be honored to supply you with some of your most common flanges, no cost, to reduce the time it takes you to test different pipe designs. Long time fan.
Tinman! Great looking little pipe. Props to your brother's fabricating skills. I would 100% purchase one of these for my 372XPW. Consider me on the pre-order list. Been looking for a "pipe" and no one manufactures/sells them. Take care man, happy cutting!
I did one kind of a pipe like this for my 372xp but in stainless steel and oh my God it turns up the saw for way better saw!!!! The saw pulls crazy with it! Nice content! I'm a stainless steel welder and cut some wood for pass the winter warm in my house!
Long time viewer first time commenter 😂 bloody love ya stuff mate! Been fixing up an old 038 magnum and your 038 playlist helped the whole way through mate! Think I watched the whole lot 3x over 😂 cheers for making quality and informative vids 😎🤙🏾 love from Australia 🇦🇺
Hey Tinman , that pipe added a lot of power! So much power it jumped off. That is just what happen when you are working on that stuff like you said . Keep up the good work!
Hey buddy fun stuff right ! Do you have an Ironhorse pipe design . My stock 372 xp loves it . Very simple and very effective. Possibly use a thicker flange you can put a bit more heat into the weld . I used 5mm stainless on the flange and tig welded that sucker . Strong as brother . Keep on keeping on Tinman it’s an interesting journey. 👍🏻🇦🇺
Couple of things I would like to talk about, first is porting, you can modify the port timing by raising and lowering the top edge of the piston, called a performance piston, Also on a pipe your after a couple things, pipe volume which has to do with the cylinder volume, and then the size of the outlet, remember the biggest thing is you want the pipe to pulse and push back on the exhaust port so intake flow doesn't come pass the cylinder before it's burnt, love your channel and your enthusiasm, stay strong
My 261 has a nununun when you let off the throttle like a dirt bike, they can be improved on but it's very hard cause they are factory made to be 50cc screamers, bigger saws are all about torque and low end and by porting and piping your making a saw run like your 50cc saw, higher end power but on big cc's
Haha love that oops moment haha reminded me of last year the first time I pulled the muffler off my craftsman and A.D.D took over and I really really needed to know what a saw sounds like with no muffler at all hahaha even a lil 40cc craftsman sounds insane 😅 and you can see the combustions happening lol pretty neat for a few seconds followed by a half hour of just giggling like an idiot
Cool idea on that pipe! Muffler mods I have done on Husky 372's I found if you aim the exhaust pipe at about a 45 degree angle and up a little you lose some exhaust savaging meaning you lose pull in the cut. I found if you use a stock muffler but use a 3/4 pipe. To encourage exhaust savaging I aim the pipe about a 90 degree angle from the cylinder. It seems to have nice pop at idle better throttle response and better pull in the cut and make the saw run pig rich so have to lean the hi jet out a bit.
I love experimental small pipes like that!... I have built a few! 372xp mini pipe and some horns for a g660 that have done well! I have some videos on them if you have time check it out brother. Some winners lol some loosers! You are correct... thats power saw building!
Testing is exactly that , it sounded great while it was going really notice the difference . I have just got the exact same saw so very interested in this . Love ya vids mate all the way from Aus
Wasn't a total failure, just a bump in the road, we all experience those, but I know you n your bro are going to absorb the bumps and fly over them. Carry On Brothers !
So I have a couple Huskys, my favorite being a 371xp. I'm in Arkansas and cut a lot of hardwood. I'm looking for a bit more snap and power for the longer bars. Sounds like I should start with a muffler mod? Anything else you'd suggest before going into it? Thanks for the show
I still burn wood as my primary heat source. I have 2 Timberwolves, one with muffler mod by Iowa Performance Saw's and one with Ironhorse style muffler mod. Good stuff.
That pipe definitely added pull it seemed like! In my mind the Ironhorse pipe design seems like it would work best. I honestly have no clue though. Cant wait to see more of this pipe! Mufflers, Muffler mods, and pipes seemto get overlooked. A lot of guys like to just slap a bark box on or a basic Muffler mod. I think thats leaving a lot of potential on the table.
Minor set back, no big deal. I also think you need the mounting bracket bolted up to stabilize it more. Look fantastic thou. Nice saw for stock. Great video. TC Mahalo Tinman 🤙🤙🤙
I am using the old style 372xp muffler with a 3/4" pipe no top outlet on a 390xp. I have been wanting to experiment with the newer muffler like yours with a 3/4" pipe and run it with the factory top port open and then blocked off with a piece of sheet metal in place of the screen to see if it favors the dual port or not on my stock 372 x-torque. I suspect the top port being open may actually hurt the performance, it would be an easy test with the muffler you have. It would be interesting to test a pipe design like your brothers pipe with a single outlet instead of duals as well, coming out the bar side like the pipe on your stock muffler. I would like to make Ironhorse's basic pipe with a single outlet and try that sometime as well. It would be nice if someone would take the time to perfect a design that works great on a work saw and sell them.
I live in the middle of a wind farm in north east Ohio. It is completely flat here. I understand about the wind. It gets pretty wicked. I have to wind proof everything out here. It does get the fire place choochin good and hot though!
You well like the 372 xp I got the new 2020 372xp x-torq had those 372xp you well love it...I love my 385xp too need few new parts for it 385xp 372xp 365 special my 3 favorite saws
Just a word about test failures... there is no such thing! You had a device failure and you learned a few things along the way. That is exactly how things are on the road to invention. Never stop testing and developing a better pipe! Your work reminds me of work an old friend of mine did in ham radio with tuned cavity filters. They resonate at very narrow but adjustable frequency not unlike what you are doing with that exhaust. I suggest you experiment with a pipe that is way longer than you think you need. Install a disk on a threaded rod such that you can adjust the volume of the cavity in that pipe. That makes effectively a adjustable whistle. You can then tune it to the engine for max performance. Then you will know what size pipe to make. I look forward to your next experiment.
Shape and design doesn't really matter when making a custom pipe, the pipe volume and the outlet size is really all that matters, I would not build a twin horn pipe from my knowledge of dirt bike and snowmobile experience but that doesn't mean it won't work, stay strong
As a welder fabricator I didn’t realize how much diff a pipe can make. I’ll be def trying things out and ideas you guys have let me know I’ll give it a shot
I about lost it ha ha ha!!! Its all about Form Fit and Function and I give you TinMan an "A" for honesty and a chuckle!!! Next version will be a better "A" ???
I usually just load the stove and throw about ahalf a cup of used engine oil with a splash of gas on it and light it up . Starts off easy and get the wood ( even if its wet ) going.
I think a lot of people that mess with pipes on saws don't know a ton about 2 strokes and what the pipe actually does. Not saying that is you. The pipe on a 2 stroke if right is like a perfect tuned music instrument. A 2 stroke pipes operates off of sound. I'm a motorcycle mechanic so love 2 stroke dirt bikes.
As you said it makes it run lean, you need to make the outlet of your pipe smaller, edit, the smaller outlet will give the exhaust a pulse and push back on the exhaust port, stopping the fresh intake air from flowing out of the saw before the piston comes back up to shut off the port
Wow I could hear the difference. Let's get some for the 288 's. Yea I'm thinking a nice pipe & a base gasket delete for the stock 288xp. Put a 32" bar on her w/an Oregon skip chain. Oils well but could use some more ars, pull, you know what I mean. 🙃
Spot-on statement about the chainsaws operating temperature. Go to far with compression and machining the saw could exceed that temperature and actually LOSE power. IF that’s the case then what’s the point for an everyday work saw ? For a racer yes 👍… looks like the pipe took a wicked hit when you cut out on that ash round
That was a great friday laugh tinman hahahahah! Having experienced a falling muffler or two myself i laugh with you ❤, i think using the tin wind shield behind the mod modded exh gives a little more support for the flange also
That pipe worked great until you Blew it off he saw with all of hat power. Maybe a small bracket on the front to use those lower factory support holes will help
Tinman that's a great video love seeing when thing go wrong this is real life ! Not glad for the failure glad you didn't cut it out. So I'm looking at piping my 550XP auto tune what do you think about that , do , do not . Have you piped one if so do you have video on it or maybe you know someone that has have
Hey I’ve been enjoying you and your videos. Looking to get a starter saw. What’s you opinion on saws. Im looking at a echo 590 timber wolf. Do you think that a good stock saw?
ya think soldered copper plumbing fittings would hold up for long as a chainsaw exhaust pipe? cut out an exhaust flange outta 1/8 in. copper plate and start soldering 3/4" fittings?

Does a stihl bark box still do a good job of that when it replaces the front muffler cover? I’m wondering if it would be best to have a port on the side of the muffler, not right on the front
Just wondering if I can change out my sprocket on my 266se to a rim sprocket? I have done it on my 038 stihl , but not sure on this Husky I just picked up for 20 bucks. Thanks Tinman, love your stuff, great information.
and ... yeah, all those little knots ... spruce don't split ... yours or mine (except I have a big ass splitter, and it splits just fine). Great early season wood ... I've been burning junk, a little aspen from the back yard ... but, it burns hot.
i will say that pipe did seem to add some snap and seemed to pull better. a lot of times I can tell a diff in sound of an engine better in vids than in person
long time ago the first rocket engineers were literally flying by the seat of their pants. their technical references were zero and development was all trial and error. but they persisted and we wound up on the moon.
I grew up with a 30” jotel stove. Stack wood at the back, kindling in the middle, paper near the door. Close the door with damper open and it took off like a blower. Within minutes it was warming the room and could maintain 80 for about 8 hours on a single reload. It would keep the house 70 for 12 hours on subsequent loads if you trimmed the door damper and scraped the coals to the front. I need to think something besides I will not buy a 372, I will not buy a 372, I will not buy a 372……

You should use the shavings from all your noodling for fire starter. My shop has almost the identical stove -25 here right now
Nothing good ever comes from not trying. Kudos to you, keep on going and doing your thing.

love to see a vid of your brother building that pipe. nice looking

Epic fails will turn into tremendous success!!!
It teaches humility and persistence!! The content is awesome !!! Keep up the good work my friend 👊
Your brother did a great job on that muffler, always fun to try different things
He does great work for sure
Tinman! Great looking little pipe. Props to your brother's fabricating skills.

Love the honesty of showing the failure.
Hey Tinman , that pipe added a lot of power! So much power it jumped off. That is just what happen when you are working on that stuff like you said . Keep up the good work!
it is what it is. Stuff happens. It was good for a laugh. thanks. Keep up the good work
Looks good, you and your bother get the pipe dialed in I will buy one!

Duuuuude! That stove is iconic!!!
If at first you don’t succeed, try try again Brother!! You’ll get it right and it will be a beastly power adder.

My dude! Compressed air! oh my... love it. cranking out the hose next time i start the fire
Lol that pipe said not today take me back inside. Like that design. I'll take one down here in Tennessee. 500i specs. Sounded wicked.
Love something like that on my 590 or 261...Let them things breath...Great job as always :)

Tinman’s Custom Exhaust is in its infant stage. It will definitely get better with age.
that dolmar sounds like heaven with a pipe!!!! ❤❤❤
That pipe your brother made sounds nasty like good nasty👌👍💪
I can tell you built a fire or two ...
A couple over the years lol
Looking Good TM!
Haha that was great. Keep innovating!
I like to make the flange a heat shield in the same piece. New pipe looks good.
Holy crap on that hatchet ...
Love the stove 👍
Make sure you keep that hatchet in good shape for Baby Charligh when she is old enough to use it.
Bro your a real woodman. News paper your more i old school than billy
what a terrific business offering power enhancing pipes. go get em brother and sign me up. got a 372xpw and a 395xp waitin

we use sassafrass for quick starter

The ironhoese pipe is way easier to male but I think these pipes may have the edge on power.
I have a stock 372 so I’d be interested in a new pipe. Subscribed to your channel.

I have an old IEL saw, and it has a very cool cast exhaust that this experimental one reminds me of. I'm curious about sand casting now... 👍
I have one of those saws with the cool muffler to.
Wicked pipe !!!
It definitely looks promising👍🏻 maby 3/16 plate for the next flange😂
You well like the 372 xp I got the new 2020 372xp x-torq had those 372xp you well love it...I love my 385xp too need few new parts for it 385xp 372xp 365 special my 3 favorite saws

Sweet, I’m asking my missus for a compressor for the fire.
ive always heard you want the output holes to add up to 80% of the exhaust port from the cylinder to make the right amount of power from a muffler mod
Shape and design doesn't really matter when making a custom pipe, the pipe volume and the outlet size is really all that matters, I would not build a twin horn pipe from my knowledge of dirt bike and snowmobile experience but that doesn't mean it won't work, stay strong

I about lost it ha ha ha!!! Its all about Form Fit and Function and I give you TinMan an "A" for honesty and a chuckle!!! Next version will be a better "A" ???

I love lodge pole for starting ... but ... I'm gona go up and cut a bit of spruce, more than already ...
That was a great friday laugh tinman hahahahah! Having experienced a falling muffler or two myself i laugh with you ❤, i think using the tin wind shield behind the mod modded exh gives a little more support for the flange also

Just joined your channel 😎💯👍.. wondering if you have any advice on a pipe for a Husky 460?
Tinman that's a great video love seeing when thing go wrong this is real life ! Not glad for the failure glad you didn't cut it out. So I'm looking at piping my 550XP auto tune what do you think about that , do , do not . Have you piped one if so do you have video on it or maybe you know someone that has
have
Saw sounded plenty zippy. You’re onto something good.
Tinman, do you still like your Osburn wood stove? Any problems with it?
Dude who freaking built that lil beast?
Looked like the first cookie you cut jumped up and bounced right off the new pipe that may have had something to do with it.
I want one now!! 👊
Hell yeah, put the swirl on it ...
I miss my woodstove, insurance company made me take it out.
Any chance you could build one for a 460 Husqvarna? Any pipe any style or design. They seem to work well all the ones I’ve seen you use.
Lots of 590/620p guys looking for a major upgrade over the factory abomination. Id be in for one as long as it wasnt crazy crazy expensive.
That pipe is obviously a different beast, but what do you think of those bark boxes? I’ve heard you say that the saw needs to scavenge air from the muffler and shouldn’t be expelled too soon. Does a stihl bark box still do a good job of that when it replaces the front muffler cover? I’m wondering if it would be best to have a port on the side of the muffler, not right on the front
I'd like to know also. Just ordered a bark box today just to have something "better". We'll see how it goes.
Just wondering if I can change out my sprocket on my 266se to a rim sprocket? I have done it on my 038 stihl , but not sure on this Husky I just picked up for 20 bucks. Thanks Tinman, love your stuff, great information.
Yes you can buy a new clutch that takes a rim sproketbif your saw doesn't have one.
and ... yeah, all those little knots ... spruce don't split ... yours or mine (except I have a big ass splitter, and it splits just fine). Great early season wood ... I've been burning junk, a little aspen from the back yard ... but, it burns hot.
That’s why they call it r&d. next one will be better.
Sign me up when dialed in for a 7900 dolkita!!!
What do you guys see the 372’s sell for used?
i will say that pipe did seem to add some snap and seemed to pull better. a lot of times I can tell a diff in sound of an engine better in vids than in person
Me to, I can hear ok video better then real life lol
long time ago the first rocket engineers were literally flying by the seat of their pants. their technical references were zero and development was all trial and error. but they persisted and we wound up on the moon.
Tin man. It sounded good. Nice oops.
A failure is part of the progress, I could tell the difference in the cutting. the ends of the pipes need to turn down a little.
Ours doesn't either especially the butternut hickory we have in north Alabama
Id be interested in a pipe or 3 lol
Tinman would you make me a muffler for my 372 xp
Are plans/dimensions available for the pipe, or is it 'trade secret' so hush?
I grew up with a 30” jotel stove. Stack wood at the back, kindling in the middle, paper near the door.
