  • In today’s video I complete a concentrate diesel purge on my 2014 Toyota Landcruiser 200 series Sahara, 4.5L twin turbo diesel.
    We talk about why we would consider a diesel purge or other additives to the vehicles fuel system and attempt to test the effects before and after, both hot and cold engines using the ECU’s engine management system.
    In particular today, we compare the injector feedback values of each individual injector and what they mean. We talk about the importance of monitoring these values and why it’s important to look after you vehicles fuel injection system.
    Do these products actually work and would I clean the system again or continue using additives in my fuel system? Watch the video to find out more.

    I can confirm that liqui moli diesel purge DOES work!! Here in south africa our diesel has a high sulphur content so our diesel vehicles suffer quiet a bit however a diesel purge makes them run like new again. I have had a case where a BMW 2.0d sdrive would basically run on 3 cylinders on cold startup with a decent amount of smoke coming out, rough idling and loud injector clutter when driving. Replaced fuel filter and purged 2 cans through it and still to this day car starts without issue on cold and drives pretty much like new. I have even noticed on vehicles with DPF after purge the DPF pressure drops completely to almost brand new. Only had 1 situation on a Audi 1.6TDI where the purge didnt help but i suspect corrosion from moisture in the injectors where purging doesnt really help

      @BruceWayne-sz3thWithout even seeing your engine I would make an educated guess and say the oil likely wasn't changed according to manufacturer's specifications and it has suffered as a result. To sum it up I would bet on it being faulty rings or a damaged cylinder wall surface or both, it honestly sounds like blow-by, resulting in unburned fuel entering the oil and diluting the contents of the crankcase resulting in further damage to the cylinder wall and rings and before too long the bearings as well. If that is in fact your situation I wouldn't want your car even if I was offered it for free. Get someone qualified to perform a compression test and a leak-down test and if your compression is poor and especially if it's not your valves I would be concerned about the condition of your cylinder walls and rings...

    I bypassed my Fuel system on my Ford Ranger - put the Luquid Mobi straight to the rail using an 6mm and 8mm fuel lines and a clean empty 2 litre pre-wash bottle as the fuel resevoir / return from rail. (pulling all the fuzes on the pump and vapourises). I ran two two full cans neat - with the return to the fuel resevoir having an inline fuel filter... Try that... It works almost neat mixing with the diesel in the rail.

    Hi Nathan .Great video and explanation. I noticed some comment on foreign bodies and algae in the fuel. I have learned over time that diesel can develop an algae contaminant if you get a load of old fuel from a servo with low diesel turnover, or may at some time have had water in their storage tanks. This is the other reason I use a diesel conditioner. Most fuel additives should not only help the injectors, but neutralise "diesel snot" . Hope this helps and thanks for the video. PS I also put it in my Diesel heater tank.

      @XploringOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Harry, appreciate the feedback on the video.
      I have continued to use the fuel conditioner in the vehicle, for that exact reason. I'm hoping that it will continue to keep the diesel in good condition and prevent damage. Now that I have a baseline test, if my results change over time in anyway, I'll report back with another video.
      Cheers, Nathan.

    About the injectors values, the sum of all of them is 0. And if you have 1 injector with problems, the rest will compensate for it. As we can see 1 injector has -1.7 value. That is why the rest have positive values to compensate for it.
    As we can see the additive helped a little, but the only way to fix it is to recondition the injector or buy a new one.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LIQU Mobi and LUCAS are good in my opinion, Sea foam is hit and miss - the rest is snake oil.
      Edit - I got a tip for oil changes - That does work - pour an Ouance / Oz of Sea Foam into your engine oil 200km before an Oil Change... let it run. Then do the oil change - it is like a pure solvent that helps remove gummy deposits - it does work for that, you'll get lots of tarry crap out of your oil drain.

    That's a very good comparison and you have presented it very well! Personally, I use Morey's Stop Smoke & Fuel Conditioner in my old 2h. After about 4-5 fuel tanks, I noticed smoother running in higher rpms, significantly less smoke when under load, and a slight increase in power however no change in fuel economy (gets between 12-13 L/100 before and after fuel treatment). Initially, I was using Fuel Doctor but I didn't notice any real difference. I find the Morey's stuff is more effective. It's pretty cool how you can collate that data and make direct comparisons with modern technologies.

    Great Video Nathan. The results seem too close to really get the feeling that anything has really changed. The graphs can sometimes exaggerate the real data. Some of this variation demonstrated could be in the errors associated with the actual measurement, as it is probably a voltage measurement and they can fluctuate a fair bit due to interference etc etc. Your car is too well maintained, get a mates shitbox that has been abused and showing some clear signs of neglect (lol). • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure, regular doses of these cleaners will help long term. Keep in mind if you put it straight into the fuel filter bowl, most of the chemical is just going to end up back in the fuel tank when its sent back down through the return lines. The chemical would only be concentrates for the first 20 or so seconds before it's diluted with the vehicles diesel in the tanks.
      Cheers, Nathan.

  • @teomannaskali
    @teomannaskali 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi,
    Those values are a good indication of injector health. However there are also other factors involved.
    If your cam shafts or associated valve mechanisms are worn irregularly then the air entering the cylinder will also be irregular.
    Therefore the engine management system will change the fuel input depending on the air (O2 sensor) or the actual acceleration of the engine (from the crank shaft sensor).
    So FYI you are not analysing purely the injectors.
    If i recall correctly the HD-1FTE engine (injector pump) in the 4.2 land cruiser diesel used crank shaft acceleration to adjust injection quantities to smooth the idle and probably during the operation of the engine.
    Thank you for the video. Very informative and professionally done. Your work is very appreciated.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate. I agree 100%.
      For this test, the injector feedback value is going to provide the easiest and likely most effected variable within the system.
      Maybe one day I'll have access to some more comprehensive equipment to be able to test systems out in a more thorough method.
      Cheers, Nathan.

  • @ben7020
    @ben7020 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great test but I doubt load is a percentage. With BMW load is an arbitrary number, with my 335i i have a peak load target of 195 ish and an idle load of 18ish.
    With your LC v8 making 175kw peak, 30% load at cold start idle would be 52 kw just sitting there.
    With many petrol turbos thats what contols boost pressure, you target more load in the ecu map.
    Also there's load commanded and load actual so if u go to overtake, the load commanded goes up, load actual is lagging, the wastegates shut, it spools and boosts until load actual catches load commanded.
    So much stuff going on, thats like 2% what a modern ecu is doing 👍

    Hello, do you have an in-tank fuel pump? or the fuel pump is outside the fuel tank?

    • @tempestv8
      @tempestv8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A stock 200 Series does not have a lift pump, only an internal transfer pump that moves fuel from the sub tank to the main tank. Fuel is drawn into the engine by the suction from the high pressure fuel pump, which is after the factory sedimeter / fuel filter.

  • @tempestv8
    @tempestv8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The return line goes directly from the high pressure pump all the way back to the tank tank. So for the concentrated purge activity, only one hose needs to go into your plastic container, to draw the liqui moly product in. There is no need to disconnect two hoses because there is no fuel coming in from the tanks, as there is no lift pump that feeds fuel from the tank to the engine. Only the supply hose going into the factory sedimenter needs to be submerged into the container. I would simply open the fuel tank cap to release any air pressure in the tank, so that when the return fuel goes back to the tank, it doesn't push fuel into the supply hose.
    N.B. This advice that I am giving is only specific for the VDJ200 - other makes, e.g. Ford Territory actually have a fuel lift pump in the tank, so two hoses do need to be disconnected.

  • @dopiaza2006
    @dopiaza2006 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not sure you're reading the values correctly. As I understand it, the ECU reads the flywheel speed thus seeing which cylinders are generating less power at idle. On the 'slower' cylinders, the ECU increases the fuel amount (positive values), but it also decreases the fuelling of other cylinders to balance it out. So really you only need to be looking at the positive numbers. It's a shame we don't know whether the injector cleaner or tank additive is the thing that made the difference.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I understand your logic here and would concede that this could be the case. Either way, the results from my testing do show that these values have moved, albeit slightly closer to that 0 mark, therefore having some improvement.
      Is there something else that you would think would of made this difference other than the cleaner?
      Thanks for sharing, Nathan.

    Nice analysis mate. Was it just me or was the variance on each injector at over time greater on both the cold and hot test post clean compared to pre clean? The graphs certainly seemed lumpy to me post clean.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Terry, appreciate it.
      I think you are right with the cold test, the variance may be a little greater on the after test, however, I do think that the variance is probably smaller on the hot test.
      The visual graphs could probably have done with a little more attention, on review now, I have noticed that the scale of the graphs is not consistent. This has probably exaggerated the visual variance.

    I was cleaning out my Landcruiser VDJ79R fuel filter case the other day with compressed air and blew a little bit of black algae & crap out from under the plastic float housing in the bottom of the filter case. There must have been a little water lurking under there to allow the algae to form, something you might want to check as it wasn't visible to the eye when replacing the stock fuel filter which I do every 20K and have never seen any water sedimenting out.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate, I'll definitely keep an eye on that. Having the secondary fuel filter also gives me a little peace of mind as well, as this is also a filter that will catch further particles and trap any water that may pass the factory filters.
      Thanks for watching and appreciate your advice.

      @dustyfarmer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@XploringOz I think the factory Toyota fuel filters do down to to 2 micron. my 145K old fuel filter case had some corrosion down the bottom so water must have been sitting in it a one stage, I just ordered a new one and noticed it has a painted on varnish like coating on the lower half to protect the case from rusting. I'll run some Liqui-moly through it and swap it out & replace the filter again too. Another important point about diesel fuel is to get a receipt each time you buy it so you have some recourse on the seller if you get a couple of K's down the road after filling up and the warning lights come on or worse.

Put the new oil in and ran it, still black on the dipstick. Had to drain the new oil that looked 5K old in 5 minutes as I was not happy with it. Second oil change much better but plenty of blowby out the filler cap on a 200K engine, longer service intervals are no good, the drain plug positioning on the sump left about 500ml of dirty oil in it, I syringe/hose suctioned that out the second time & not one grease nipple on it either, oil filter was in a bastard of a position too.

    Hi mate, seen you have a post fuel filter on there, what micron did you go with and why did you choose to go post over a pre filter. Just curious to your thoughts.
    Cheers mate

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Mark, yes that's correct I'm running a post filter and this is a 5 micron filter.
      So the reason I ran a post filter, rather than a pre filter is to allow the factory sensor in the primary filter to activate if for whatever reason water gets into the system or the filter becomes blocked.
      The post filter allows any dirt that may have passed the primary filter to be captured at this point prior to entry.
      Now I know this may not always make sense, however there are pro/cons for both pre and post filters. Fitting a pre-filter could potentially block up with dirty fuel and won't provide the driver with any information until the SCV (suction control value) is placed under large stress, potentially causing a failure.
      The primary factory filter is still a very cost effective maintenance item and is very easy to change roadside if required.
      I hope this helps somewhat.
      Cheers, Nathan.

TO be honest, a few internet reviews provided some positive feedback for the Liqui-moly product's and along with their reliable reputation, I was happy with this choice. I guess the Liqui-moly products are probably a little more readily available to most people, being stocked in most popular Aus vehicle accessory stores. Although I'm sure Toyota dealers would stock their cleaner (and online options), I'm assuming most people would generally attend and check mainstream franchise stores first.

    Injection feedback value 2 -1.6
    Injection feedback value 3 5.0
    Injection feedback value 4 -2.4
    Break it to me, easy bro... is this good or bad? lol

    G'day Bud, very well done, Trying to install and run the same program to do the injector feedback test. Just wondering how you got your program working for the diagnostic. what version are you running and on what version of operating system ie, win 10 64bit?? any info would be gr8 thanks.

      Cheers mate. One thing I can tell you for sure that this program is not fun to get working. I am not an IT guy by any means, but it took me a long time.
      In the end, I just couldn't get it working and sent my laptop to Perth by mail to get my brother-in-law to get it to work.
      I'm using an old laptop, running Windows 7 (64 bit).
      If you check out the Landcruiser 200 series Facebook pages there is a guy by the name of Lee Owen who has a couple of posts that gave a detailed explanation on how to work it, not that it worked for me (definitely my fault though).
      I wish I could help some more, but unfortunately computers and software just isn't my thing.
      I hope you can get it to work.
      Cheers, Nathan.

      The little filter was fitted. It was fitted on the end of the intake hose, this was placed inside the container with the cleaner.

    I would be replacing injectors at 100k if towing a lot / working the engine a lot or at around 140k if the engine has had an easy life or at around 5 years, to prevent blow by from aging and or worn seals etc. At the same time i would be getting the egr system cleaned as even if you have a catch can you will still get soot build up over time.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear what you are saying, but at $6000 for replacement injectors, that just isn't a viable of cost effective option.
      I have had the intake and EGR clean as I fully expect some oil to still make is past the catch can 👍

      Yes, this can be used repetitively, it will likely has less and less effect, the cleaner and efficient the injectors become.

    Any reason in particular why you run a " post" fuel filter and not a " pre " fuel filter?

    • @jpbro5545
      @jpbro5545 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the dude form Berrima Diesel is not that impressed with a post fuel filter on the diesel LC200 - th-cam.com/video/uRKsXgHuWX0/w-d-xo.html He talks like he knows his stuff

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are definitely advantages to both running pre and post filters and it will depend on how you want to set up your particular vehicle.
      The reason I chose this method is that it allows the pre-filter to essentially run as standard, meaning that if I pick up dirty fuel, my dash and factory sensors will let me know.
      I always carry an extra fuel filter and am able to clear the fault light with the Ultraguage.
      Running a pre-filter can protect your factory filter, however you won't know whether it has picked up dirt and debris until there is a slow down of fuel passing through the filter.
      Again, everyone has their own opinion on this matter and this is only how I think about it.
      Cheers, Nathan.

    Would this be an good idea of adding additive to a brand new car to prevent any buildup?

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sure would. I would personally use it as an additive to the fuel tank, just to continually flush through a small amount while driving. This would prevent long term build up and assist to keep the system clean.

      The best thing you can do is to install an oil catch can. It prevents sludge buildup in intake manifold and valves.
      Injectors are fine if you use good gas and change the fuel filter.
