    The reason people tend not to use addons is for learning. You say yourself to learn fundamentals but how can you if youre using aton of addons that make techniques and workflow as trivial as pressing a button. If you are an expert by all means save your time, but if you're learning you are cheating yourself by using addons constantly

      @Cyber_Kriss ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I used Blender for 2 or 3 years before considering buying any add-on. It's always best to know how things works under the hood.

    • @richardconway6425
      @richardconway6425 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Ha! If only using addons was as 'trivial' as pressing a button!!
      I've got a few add ons, and I can't think of one that makes a process trivial.
      I don't disagree with what you say, in fact, I pretty much totally agree with you, having followed that 'learning' path myself, but.....
      I'm not sure it's quite as clear cut as you say. I would like to give a couple of examples where using addons actually greatly improved my understanding of a number of things, and processes, to the point where I could now do a lot more of that workflow manually (but not necessarily all of it).
      Mesh Machine by MACHIN3.
      This addon greatly helped me understand what I needed to do to improve/refine my meshes, after having done boolean operations.
      It highlighted overlapping vertices in red (why does vanilla blender not do this in edit mode?) and alters the geometry to a more 'ideal' state, so as to avoid shading artifacts. It does this in a very interactive way, with lots of user input. Good topology is not rocket science, but can be really challenging for beginners, especially after doing booleans, and this addon helped me understand what could be done and how. It also took a certain amount of time and effort for me to work out how to use it, because at first I actually couldn't! It didn't seem very intuitive, but part of that was because I didn't understand its limitations. It can't do the impossible! For example, it took me a while to realise that it couldn't do certain operations because my mesh didn't have quad geometry in the right places. Some mesh operations require quad geometry, simple as that. This is true for vanilla blender as it is for the addon. Again, lesson learnt.
      Decal Machine by MACHIN3. ( + Grab Doc)
      This is an interesting one. Trim sheets. Completely unintelligible to a beginner, but practically essential for hard surface industrial/scifi environment modelling.
      Without these two addons and a few tutorials from Ponte Ryuurui, I would never have been able to get even a foothold in this particular workflow. Going through the process of creating the geometry for a trim sheet, then extracting the geometry for texture maps, then bringing them into Decal Machine, and marking out the 'trims', it's quite a process, about as far from 'one-click' as you can get, but again, not only can I now do this essential thing, but I've learnt so much from the process of doing it. All about the relationship between geometry, and the various texture maps that you can make from it, and perhaps using them in other contexts, manually.
      I would never have have gained this kind of understanding without the use of these addons.
      So ..... I'm not disagreeing with you at all, I just think that it's interesting that the issue of addons is not quite as clear cut as might seem.
      You must have had some similar experiences yourself?

    • @cyborgmetropolis7652
      @cyborgmetropolis7652 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. Many add-ons work like macros or shortcuts into Blender’s basic operations. Box Cutter, for example, bundles Boolean operations to cut down on user steps but it could create issues that can be avoided with some basic Blender knowledge.

      You’re not cheating yourself by using addons, you’re being efficient and using leverage, because addons are tools that makes your job easier. If I choose to use a electric drill to screw as opposed to manually screwing with screwdriver to fulfill a task of putting screws in, am I cheating myself?

    • @cyborgmetropolis7652
      @cyborgmetropolis7652 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AbramHadnot that’s fine IMO as long as we know the fundamentals in case we need to fix something unintentional a plug-in did for us.

  • @grumpycup4762
    @grumpycup4762 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    So the issues a lot of people have with using...well not previously made assets, but using bought assets or 3rd party assets. As well as using funky plugins - is that you run a risk of not learning properly.
    This ties back to your first segment where fundamentals are so extremely important, and I cannot help but agree.
    I've been in a hiring position for 3D artists for a while now, and time and time again I see, usually young graduates come out with good looking reels and portfolios that they just haven't made themselves.
    I'm talking content that is 90% carried by 3rd party assets. Interesting and tasty techniques that weren't made traditionally, but with the help of an expensive, third-party plugin. etc. etc.
    It makes us think:
    - OK, nice reel bro. But why should we hire you and pay you a monthly salary when we can just buy those assets and plugins you've been using and save ourselves the trouble.
    Also that plugin you got there doesn't fit into our pipeline anyways and we really don't like being beholden to all too many 3rd party softwares to begin with (huge reason why we've been moving more and more towards blender the past years).
    What we want is a 3D artist who knows their stuff. Who, when the plugins go away and the asset store is shut off -> Can still do the work.
    That's why I mainly agree with the first part.
    F U N D A M E N T A L S
    It's the age-old adage: Learn the rules first; THEN you can break them.

    Learned these problems the hard way
    About fundamentals i think it becomes a rabbit hole itself because once you start learning them you never finish, which can lead to something similar to the imposter syndrome (i live in this spectrum, never confident enough about my art which led me to stopping entirely just to focus on fundamentals for about 6 months now)
    About creating everything from scratch: it's fine if you're doing a learning exercise, in fact I would encourage people to do such an exercise one hour every day, but on production of course you can't do that, as they say time is money, so why waste time when you can just reuse previously made assets/base meshes.
    Finally about plug-ins i just wanted to say, my personal problem here isn't the demonization of them, but rather the overwhelming amount of add-ons that exist for some stuff and how hard it becomes to find the right one (basically this issue applies for paid ones, for free ones just grab it, try it a couple hours and if it meets your requirements you found your addon, otherwise uninstall and find the next one)

      You can spend an entire life span improve your fundamentals. Always make sure to keep creating original art and applying the fundamentals in praxis.
      Drawabox is a community dedicated to teaching art fundamentals and they have something which is called the 50/50 rule. Spend equally as much time in improving your fundamentals as in creating artwork where you don't actively try to make use of them.

    • @MaryIam13
      @MaryIam13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you so much, especially about the fundamentals...topology for example is a topic I understand but still not good enough to create a pretty head base from scratch (especially the ears) :"^) Imposter syndrome is the worst, I too have stopped working on projects to focus solely more on fundamentals but it's a never ending rabbit hole :")
      And about making things from scratch, I also think its very important to practice everyday, bc even if it's not particularly a topic you'd want to focus, it gives a general idea whether it's worth it to continue and dive deeper in the future; like I'm not a Material artist but practicing Substance Designer made me realized that I do want to make certain key fabrics for a charac from scratch one day, so it doesn't look generic/adds uniqueness to it compared to what's already available^^

    I've been told (and thus follow) that the reason why people don't (initially) use add-ons is because they'll learn what problems the add-on even solves in the first place. That way, if something goes wrong, they're more likely to know what happened.
    This said and I'm realizing there's not exactly a clear point for when to make the switch. I guess I'll need to start looking at the add-ons on Blender.
    Great video btw! I'm taking notes!

    I would also say limiting your self to one main software.. blender or maya can do anything!!! But doesn’t mean they are the best choice for everything. If I come across something I want to do, and I can’t do it efficiently in my main software (unity) at the moment. I’ll search to find a quicker method to do the same task. Quicker isn’t always better you say…NO… but it gives you flexibility to get the job done quicker so you have more time to focus on the details! And polish it up! @@fabulamcafee I wish. I have to watch Europe starve, freeze, in the dark before it propagates here to the states because the US relies on a lot of German and other European stuff to stay functional... and I thought it was a wholly Chinese shop here in the US... not for important, high value goods... those require german work(wo)manship.
      If we all get lucky and don't get blown up, the next winter is unsurvivable, there's no energy to buy at any price to replace the trickle still available for the Europeans.
      So, I've adopted the "Girls just want to have fun" approach to life and will enjoy myself for as long as possible until even for me, there's a curtain call.

  • @jeffreyspinner9213

    Getting gud at "CGI" Art is twofold. You have to master the tools so they are transparent to your "vision," and you have to _have_ a vision. What has failed me more often than I thought possible, was like Mike Pavlovich agreed with me once a long time ago: "After I made ZBrush transparent, I could make whatever I wanted... then I had nothing left I wanted to make!"
    Now, if any one dares say, "well, use one of the AIs to substitute for your creativity," I say, give up your huemon card, because you have conceded you are no longer worth even the most meager quality and quantity of food... Human creativity once snuffed out, and the machine intelligence from Midjourney to whatever Idc, which are just plagiarists of _us_ that posted our stuff on the internet, never comes back, no different than you can vote yourself into a tyranny, but spoilers, no one has voted themselves out of one.
    These AI Art programs are normalizing our replacement by machine intelligence. Do any of you have the capacity to metacomment/critically think above the concrete level? I can't be alone out here. (I know I'm not, but there are so few ppl that see a bigger picture than the tip of their noses, it shocks me every time I see ppl miss the elephant sitting on their necks.)

    Really great inspirational videos, I've watched three in a row now and it really helps with my motivation to continue modeling and wanting to succeed in making it become my primary work! Been having a bit of a dip lately with staying motivated now that it's been half a year since I finished a paid course, and I'm not even sure if I've made any real progress since then - or how much longer I need to keep leaning onto my wife to keep our economy stable.
    Thankfully she doesn't have a problem with it, has been very supportive ever since the course started last year, and earns more than enough for both of us.
    Anyways, I'll keep watching your vids and try to stay motivated! Really hoping to see some progress in 2024 and landing my first job or internship.

    The same people who say using references and using add-ons and using digital art is "immoral" and "cheating" don't understand that:
    1. Professionals that actually work in the industry use these things.
    2. You cannot create what you have not ever seen before.
    3. If your mentality is that using things to help optimize your workflow as well as help make it correctly in the first place is "cheating", then you are no longer allowed to drive a car to work. You now have to grind your own coffee beans. You have to make all of your utinsils instead of using what you own. You have to read a dictionary instead of using Google. You can't use your phone anym, just letters. You have to travel by foot or horse back. Your pens have to be a quill and ink. If these things sound unreasonable to you, you would be right. Because people invent ways to help humans do things more efficiently so they can focus less on walking for hours to a destination, and more on being able to create art. Humans exist to create art and spread love (platonic) to one another. Having tools does not make it cheating. If you looked at the people that built your house and they heard you talking shit about how they "had to use power tools when a hand saw is right there" they would hate you. If you step into these people's shoes, you would want tools that make your life better. And I guarantee you every single person who complains about how you morally cannot do something is always the first to be found guilty of doing that as well in secret. I see it all the time.
