“I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day.
I liked Jimi Hendrix’s record of this and ever since he died I’ve been doing it that way. Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it’s a tribute to him in some kind of way.”

Hadn't seen or heard this quote from Dylan. Seems to capture much of the listening public's perspective on arguably one of the best songwriting (Dylan) and performance (Hendrix) masterpieces of our times...Thanks for posting this.
I think Dylan intensely disliked 'psychedelic' music from '67 onwards, and had little time for the Woodstock festival in '69 - including 'Sgt Pepper'. This sounds like a retrospective view to me.
I think the fact that someone as irreverent and hostile as a young Bob Dylan was actually a fan of Jimi, and that someone as talented and different as Jimi was a huge Dylan fan only goes to show that talent recognises talent.
I love both versions of this, both have their place 🎵🎶
Great comment. Two great musicians two great renditions.
Absolutely. Though even Dylan has said Hendrix's version is his favorite. Damn that man could play.
Honestly, I could not stand to listen to Dylan until Jimi and others started doing his songs... must have been the harmonica. Really, I think anyone reading this could do a better rendition.
Someone irrelevant as BOB DYLAN? Are you crazy? He was a legend since day one.
"You burst into scene already a legend"
@@johngalt7789 irreverent, mate. Not the same word - of course Bob Dylan was an absolute legend from day dot, one of the most relevant figures of the 60's, and now of course ;)
I honestly cannot believe how much quality music was put out during the 60s
It's all the acid 💀
Especially compared to now.
Every decade has quality music
Part of it is that there was also a lot (an absolute ass-ton) of really bad music from that time, you just don't hear it ever
@@2bobaf Music has been at some of its best in the last 5-ish years. Rock is struggling a little bit, but every genre has its peaks over time. Metal and rap and even pop are all reaching new heights, both in terms of enjoyability and artistry
Just reminding everyone that you are allowed to like both versions of this song *dylan and hendrix* without having to devalue the other, so sad to see a great song plagued with ignorant comments
Yeah both versions are special in their own way.
A great song will always be a great song.
Indeed
Both are superb, Bob,s is more haunting with a high- lonesome sound, Jimi's version is more hard driving BOTH ARE STELLAR.!!!
Who cares people really forgetting that Jimi did it cause he loved Dylan, and Dylan respected Jimi and said that he preferred Jimi’s version
Take a bow , to every word put together in this story by Dylan.
Tell methe story, please.
From 1963-1967 Dylan released a string of 7 masterpiece albums in a row, one after the other. I don’t think anyone will ever equal that.

Dylan is the greatest contemporary writer there is. His contributions are incalculable ☮️
This song is about the mind where the right side looks outward for saviour and watches the reality which it sees losing touch with itself and the other mind was asleep and wakes and now starts it's journey to wake her up and become one again
In the Hendrix version, the music takes priority over the lyrics. Not so with Dylan's original production where the power of the lyrics reigns supreme.
Imo the cover mixes the genius of both. Hendrix's guitar matched with Dylan's lyricism. It creates the perfect song. Not many compare to all along the watchtower by jimi
Rinifi agree man hendrix version is too much for this piece coz dylan wants to tell a story
That’s the beauty of dylan. He had s simple mad catchy beat, but his lyrics are the main event. It’s not about the flashy guitar solos or drum riffs. It’s about the message
Totally agree!!
I thought the same. The music great as it is louder than the lyrics and it doesn’t feel as important as it should.
A Nobel song .
Now weird Al Yankovic shud parody it and win the ignoble prize.
I concur.

What great poet.
My favorite Dylan song--especially this, his original version. His voice is superb here. Great song!!
His voice is tremendous. He puts some kind of restriction on his vocals as if his airways are being closed. Fits with the lyrics "there must be some way out of here"
Yup. This is far superior to Hendrix's version haha.
Yeah his voice in the 60's and 70's was unusual but great. I just listened to part of a concert he gave in the 90's and it's like he's doing a bad imitation of himself.

Didn’t know that Bob Dylan was the originator of All Along the Watchtower. Jimmy, however, made a master of this most incredible and historic song! Kudos to both!
Dylan's version is disturbing.
Hendrix made it scary.
Indeed, apocalyptic.
You hit the nail on the head. The lyrics and sparse arrangement make it sound like something awful is coming. I’ve been listening to this song for years and never figured out what creeped me out.

"There must be someway out of here" I think it's the best opening line in the history of music
Dylan is unsurpassable when it comes to songwriting and storytelling. Although I prefer the Hendrix version, it's a shame that Dylan doesn't really get the credit he deserves for this song
He got a damn Nobel prize for this song
He might not get the credits but he probably gets the $$ instead (copyright) 😉
He basically passed "ownership" of the song to Hendrix and said his version was superior.
@snoodle Nah he got it for all his songs, it's alright ma, visions of Johanna, stuck inside of mobile with the Memphis blues again
@@elstonngunn4193 exactly. It’s naive to think this was the only reason why he won the Nobel Prize... also, songs like it’s alright ma and desolation row are bigger lyrical achievements in my opinion.
My favourite song of all time, Shrouded in mystery, buried in lyrical genius. Bob Dylan is the greatest.
Not really that mysterious. Based on "Five Characters in Search of an Exit" by Rod Serling.
Seems so relevant to what is happening now, in 2022. The wild cat is growling, the riders are approaching, the wind is howling, and the harmonica is playing.
how?
Absolutely. I think Bob always had a fascination with Armageddon. He might become a real witness of the event.
One of the greatest songs ever written
Somehow the Dylan version suits the lyrics so much better - melancholic and philosphical. It grabs and holds harder, leaving some sad but also pleasant feeling after listening to it.

A timeless classic, can’t say the same about today’s music.😢
That’s what everybody says, that’s how the rose-tinted glasses of time work.
Kids will always be disrespectful to elders, the old music will always be better than modern music, what you experienced when you were young will always reign supreme, etc.
That doesn’t negate there is terrible music produced today, but there was also terrible music made in the 1960s.
Also, there are plenty of modern-day and 2000s musicians who deserve praise and respect, even if you and others didn’t like them. They aren’t better or worse than classic musicians of the 60s, they just work differently and make music focusing on different aspects like lyrics and rhythm. Let’s take the hip-hop artist MF DOOM as an example.
DOOM and many others made their music by sampling tracks and writing and crafting lyrics over them. Unlike Dylan’s writing, DOOM instead used Stream-of-Consciousness to make creative lyrics that, instead of weaving an overarching story, jumped from place to place like the rhythm of someone’s thoughts.
It’s not the same, but nothing is. Music has to evolve too, it can’t be stuck in one place, y’know.

Well it’s hard to call it rock
This was his first album after the motorcycle crash, and he had gone into seclusion. He made Columbia release it with no advertising and no singles.
