To show how much esteem Johnny Cash held Marty Robbins in, Marty guested on his show 4 times. I love this version just as much as the recorded version because you get to see the class that Marty Robbins just oozed with, be it on record, on stage or in the recording studio. One of THE great American singers of the 20th Century.
I survived being hit by a semi on the freeway when I was 5 months pregnant. This song has been so powerful and personal to me since then. I was never wayward, but the miracle of being spared when by rights I should have died spoke to my soul in an incredible way. Thank you, Robbins!
I've always preferred this faster version, it sounds "more urgent" Thanks for posting. Marty was the absolute greatest right up till the savour called his name. Long gone, but never to be forgotten.
One of, if not the greatest of "cowboy hymns". I would play Marty on radio, 8 track, cassettes, and now we do him on CDs. Whenever I hear this one, Streets of Laredo, The Hangin' Tree, Utah Carroll, or They're Hangin' Me Tonight.. It never fails to make me think of where I could have taken wrong turns in life. I was very wild and wasn't afraid of the "Old Scratch" but I thank God that he gave me enough brains to save me from doing all I thought about and bringing shame for me and my family.
I feel he never got the recognition he deserved here in the UK because most of his 45's that hit in the 50's were covered ( not for the better) by local artists. Marty should have been a household name, but unfortunately this wasn't the case. This would have been a big hit if it had been released as a single, but due to Marty singing 'preformed' instead of 'performed' it wasn't released. He corrected his mistake on 2 other versions which came out on Return Of The Gunfighter +All Around Cowboy.
This is absolutely superb. What an immense talent Marty Robbins was. Nice to see Marty sing one of his classic songs off of his legendary 'Gunfighter Ballads' album.
It is a little faster than the regular recording, an opportunity to hear this great, powerful classic of Marty's, in a little different version. Might have been something as mundane as the show running short on time-no problem for this kind of a pro.

This was one of my mom's favorite songs.

Fantastic song, by the equally fantastic singer songwriter, the one and only Marty Robbins...........
What an excellent voice he had. :The emotion pours out of his music.

Nice song, it was a really good show.
Yes, I prefer the album version, but it's so neat to see Marty live! He's wonderful!

LOVE this album and this song! A shame they rushed him at double-speed, but TV is like that.
Im not a big fan of the uptempo version but , Marty made it perfect in its own glory ... Truely a Legend
Amazing--I agree, a *LITTLE* different than the original, but still sounds every bit as good. Marty Robbins is one of my favourite musicians.
Yeah Marty Did a badass job at 2x speed...
