A couple corrections: - In game assets for GC, DC, and PC are all identical, just rendered in different fashion (i.e. red tint on DC). - All PC versions share the same exact audio, which is higher quality than N64, but inferior to PSX. - GOG and Platinun edition have the same exact video files. - Platinum doesn't necessarily have texture warping, that's just the software renderer. - GOG didn't introduce any new renderer, they just enable hardware rendering by default and wrap the original calls. Also one thing nobody ever mentions is that the GC version is the only one to support true z-buffered rendering.
The N64 version is also Z-buffered according to a developer commentary, although the voices are heavily compressed , the music and environmental audio and SFX uses Dolby Pro Logic 2 spacial audio if your sound setup supports it. Door transitions and the pauses are slightly faster either, all the itens can be randomized, with the expansion pack enabled the games turns on dynamic resolution scaling. It's a miracle of a port, 165:1 tour the force compression! They had a measley 25mb of space to cram more than 15 minutes of uncompressed FMVs , all the video frames together extracted from the PS1 discs resulted in a 4 gigabytes total size. They also had to cram the audio from the video files separately.
Great summary! It seems GoG -> mod to SourceNext -> mod to Classic Rebirth + use the improved audio is the way to go. That's a lot of modding, though; has it been confirmed to work properly? Also, I'm really surprised at how many people approve of the "Seamless HD" thingy. To me, not only is the very concept of AI upscaling an abomination, but the backgrounds end up looking horrible. The glossy, AI-warped features are much worse than simply using the original lower res art.
I couldn't agree more. I'll take raw pixels over an AIs assumptive attempt to recreate detail that just results in a smudgy, inaccurate mess that doesnt honour the work the devs put into these games. I know the intention is to make the low res backgrounds look better on modern displays, but please, just play these games with a CRT filter (crtroyale) via reshade or retroarch. It can look genuinely amazing, and it's significantly more accurate and representative of what the developers intended.
Last time i played re2 was through the pc sourcenext version with CR and the audio mod, they worked fine but some low quality sounds still remain, like the final boss of the 'A' scenario or the semifinal boss' (from the 'B' scenario) intro

Something you probably didn't know about the N64 port of RE2 is that, to save space they completely re-did the OST in order for it to fit giving a very subtle difference in the vibe of the game. Also something they had to do during one of the FMV scenes, when Annette talks about William injecting himself with the G-Virus, Claire's voice is used for BOTH as to cut corners. It is a small scene but I think Lotus Prince's video on RE2 got you beat in that respect. But I do appreciate you mentioning which emulators you used to make these comparisons. I do not know if there's any rom patches out there to improve the audio quality for the N64 port. The only thing I'll be doing for my experience with GOG is the improved audio and a CRT filter to really give it the old look I'd like to have experienced it with.
Actually saw a video why exactly the N64 version looks so different and my mind was actually blown. How they managed to fit the entire game especially the cutscenes file sizes on the cartridge is truly amazing and the game is 1 of it's kind on the console!
Great video! I cant even imagine how much time you put into getting the footage of all those versions of RE 2, and to edit this as well, its a great video congrats!
Scratching my head here how you see the Seamless HD Project mod as an improvement. Everything looks so wrong. For instance, just look at those glass windows at the 11:00 mark, as well as the subsequent frame at 11:02. Incredibly sloppy even by the standard of typical AI upscale jobs.

Just wanted to note that if someone wants to play the Dreamcast version on Flycast, you should play it through the Flycast Retroarch core, as it doesn't have the frame pacing/timing issues the Flycast standalone version has. It's really a shame the standalone version has this terrible bug that effects every game, as it pretty much leaves Redream as the only other alternative (unless you don't suffer from the frame pacing bug).
Lots of standalone emulator frontends suffer from the same issue. mGBA is another example. Synchronization of two systems running at different speeds is a hard problem most emulators don't succeed at.

Leon’s campaign is noticeably easier because you can one shot zombie heads with a shotgun and Claire’s grenades are weak in comparison, but Claire’s bowgun can make the zombies fall if i remember. It makes you make choices throughout the game and being creative and basically anyone playing on Nightmare is familiar with the layouts so if you are low on ammo you can calculate where it’s best to get bitten to get past a part. I think for the GameCube version, the dev builds (don't know if the stable builds have them yet) of Dolphin have an option called "Custom (Stretch)" which allows you to set a custom aspect ratio while cropping out the borders. So you could set it to 4:3 to get the intended aspect ratio instead of using "Force 4:3." The only issue is that this exposes the small black borders on the left and bottom side of the screen that are inherently part of the game on Dolphin.
