There needs to be a tag on the Steam store for "Broken PC Port."
Game developers/publishers need to be publicly shamed for releasing terrible or sub-optimal PC ports, and I can't think of a better way to do it than by putting an explicit mark of shame on their game's store page, for all to see. It would also discourage people from buying them, thus discouraging other bad ports in the future.

Too many publishers use digital platforms/DLC/patch culure to half-arse their releases and rely on consumer ignorance/apathy, so I definitely agree.

that's why i never buy japanese PC ports day one. most of them are terrible. i'm verry worried about falcom making an in-house pc version of the trails in the sky remake, usually they let the german PH3 company do it but now they're doing it themselves. it's going to be terrible

    • @RegalPixelKing

That would be a horrible idea. For one who would put that tag there? The Steam userbase or Steam employees? If it's a userbase a campaign similar to review bombing could give a game that unfair tag, and a single person might not be the most trustworthy to add such a harmful tag.
What if a game gets patches and it fixed? Will that remove the tag? Will the tag be removed in a timely fashion? How will it be decided and who will decide to remove the tag?
What if it's a game like India Jones and the Great Circle which requires very high specs, but if you reach said specs it runs amazingly. Isn't it automatically "bad optimization" for people with older PCs?
What if it's something like Red Dead Redemption 2 at launch? I don't know if you remember but people left and right were yelling about how terrible that game's optimization was because 1080p 60fps at max settings was barely possible on the highest end cards at the time. This was in spite of the fact that consoles ran the game at low-medium settings and most the PC settings far surpassed anything consoles could ever hope to do. But people just looked at the resolution and frame rate and yelled "bad optimization!" Red Dead Redemption 2 is actually an outstanding port in most regards and was kind of like a modern day Crysis in terms of offering settings that would be more beneficial in the future (which is now assuming you own something like a 4090) compared to when it first released.

The FF7 PC port was the first game I ever modded. The music was absolutely dreadful on my soundcard. There couldn't have been more than 2 instruments going at any time and both sounded terrible. A guy on IRC got me a copy of the original PSX audio and showed me how to replace it. Took the better part of a day to download over dial-up but it was so worth it.

What's wild (From my POV) I know you're talking about the original 99' release. I started PC Gaming in 07', Square Enix brings out this horrid *Remaster* of 7 by 2011 again, when i was also taught how to add back in the better PSX Audio by fans who where actively fixing the port.
It's really amazing to see how far fans have took the PC version now. Practically re-wrote the entire engine and as a little bonus, it's even nice to know future fans won't have a terrible first experience of 7 PC ever again as we did between 2 decades!

    • @KrimsonKattYT
      @KrimsonKattYT 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

Yeah, FF ports were always adding and removing content to the extent that very rarely is there a definitive version of the game.
      FF1:
1: GBA Dawn of Souls version fixes all bugs, upgrades the graphics to be more in line with FF4, drastically improved battle speed, adds new songs to the OST, changes spell charges to MP, adds 4 new bonus dungeons, and adds new items, but also drastically rebalances the game to be much easier.
2: PSP version is identical to the GBA version except for better sound and graphics and another bonus dungeon including the new superboss Chronodia.
3: The pixel remaster adds in a map and remixes all the music, but brings back spell charges and removes the bonus dungeons.
      FF2
-The GBA DoS version has all the same changes as FF1 DoS, but also adds a new epilogue chapter called Soul of Rebirth
-The PSP version is identical to the GBA version minus improved graphics and sound.
-The pixel remaster downgrades the graphics from the PSP and removes Soul of Rebirth.
      FF3
-The 3D version changes the story, adds names and personalities for the onion kids, changes class progression, changes the graphics to be low-poly 3D, adds a new dungeon and superboss, and updates the music, but has only 3 enemies max on screen, is even slower than the NES version, and is much more difficult.
-The pixel remaster brings back the pixel graphics, drastically changes how classes work, and adds much needed save points to the final dungeons, but removes the onion kids names and personalities, reverts the story changes, and removes the bonus dungeon and superboss.
      FF4
-The GBA version redid the translation, allowed you to change your party, added in 2 new bonus dungeons with 2 new superbosses and the dark eleidons, added numerous new equipment, and rebalanced the game to make it generally harder and more in line with the SF original.
-The DS version removed ALL the bonus content from the GBA version and has a much worse translation, but added 3D graphics, full voice acting, the brand new "augment system", NG+, and a new superboss.
-The PSP version is identical to the GBA version but with better graphics and sound while also including FF4 The After Years and the brand new FF4 Interlogue storyline.
-The Pixel Remaster has the best OST but reverts ALL the additions made in the GBA and PSP versions. It uses a slightly modified GBA script.
      FF5
-The GBA version adds in 5 new classes, a new bonus dungeon, 3 new superbosses, and completely redone translation from the PSX version.
-The Delisted Mobile/Steam version is basically the GBA version but with worse graphics.
-The Pixel Remaster uses the GBA translation but removes the bonus content from the GBA and old Mobile/Steam release.
      FF6
-The GBA version adds back in cut content from the SNES version and undoes censorship, but has significantly worse graphics and sound.
-The mobile/steam versions of FF6 are identical to the GBA version but with the same terrible art style and altered gameplay, which thankfully can be reverted back.
-The Pixel Remaster is basically the SNES release with the GBA translation and A LOT of added QoL and balance changes. (Buffed Cyrus, nerfed Sabin and Edgar, Deathgaze can now be seen on the map, etc)

Yeah, the remodeled faces look more awkward than they did on PS2, but the bigger annoyance for me is the audio and visual glitches: Valefor's summoning lacking some of its sound effects when the beacons reach the sky, Ifrit's summoning lacking his growl when he catches Yuna (except when summoned by someone other than Yuna for some weird reason), Energy Blast starting with awkward silence, and Yojimbo's summoning having the screen flip upside down in the transition to the "moonlit night" background, among several other examples.

There's a hotfix mod you can use to make the games run properly on the Guides page for each game on Steam. Since the ports default to using 2GB of RAM, the hotfix makes it to where the games use the full 4GB of RAM that they're supposed to use, making them run MUCH more smoothly and crash MUCH less. I'm surprised the Crystal Chronicles port wasn't mentioned. Due to making little to no modifications to the game itself the multiplayer went from local to online only requiring everyone to own a copy on a switch/ps4 or the mobile port, In addition you also had to play areas multiple times through for each player to make progress in their story as nothing is synchronized between players so only the Host progresses in terms of the story stuff.

If only you could include Kingdom Hearts in this list as well, because the Switch "ports" of KH 1.5 Remix, 2.5 Remix, and 3 are a complete disgrace - Especially with 1.5 and 2.5.
That is because Squeenix in their infinite wisdom determined that the Switch was just too weak to run PlayStation 2 games, so they released everything as cloud streaming titles that barely functioned.
And before you go "B-but they are based on the PS3 ports", this is also a console with a port of Red Dead Redemption 1 that runs better on Switch than it ever did on PS3.

    • @randombread1456
      @randombread1456 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

If they were just the PS2 games as is, the original ISO files completely untouched, then sure. But they aren’t, and to be fair to the Switch (although I still think the cloud ports are silly), the PS3 did at times struggle with those collections too.
Even if RDR runs better on the Switch, the visual comparison is completely useless here. It’s all down to the engine and the software used to develop these collections, and some are more optimised for the Switch and/or optimised in general than others.
There are some games that are graphically impressive for the hardware and run great, and then on the other side of the coin there’s games that maybe use simpler art styles but don’t run so well.
I do think that Square-Enix could have got these ports running natively in they put the time and money into it, but they probably just wanted something quick for the Smash dlc and the anniversary.

    • @scaryhobbit211
      @scaryhobbit211 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

@@randombread1456 Red Dead Redemption 1 is 100 times more technically complex than any of the PS2 Kingdom Hearts, both graphically and gameplay-wise. The KH games being remade on a PS3-compatible engine doesn't change this fact.
Final Fantasy X, X-2, and XII were remade for PS3 in the exact same fashion, and they ALL have proper Switch ports.
It's pure laziness on the part of Square.

    • @randombread1456
      @randombread1456 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

@@scaryhobbit211 Hey I’m not disagreeing with you lol, it generally is laziness. But at the same time, no two ports are the same, even if they come from the same hardware. Even if FFX and the like run well (and very well at that), there’s no guarantee. It’s all down to the team and the tools, ports are weird like that.
Even then though, I do believe that it could also be either that they had some kind of deal with Ubitus at the time (ofc keep in mind KH wasn’t the only cloud port from Square-Enix, although the other ports made WAY more sense to be cloud ports) and they decided to just slap them on there, or they just wanted to get something out to line up with Smash and the anniversary and figured this would be the quickest way to get to that.
Alternatively, it was probably just the case that they were working on porting them, 2 out of three of the collections wouldn’t work natively (for the most part, DDD is a bit of an oddity in that regard), so they decided to cut corners and save money.
Whatever the reason behind it was though, with a little work and time I don’t see why Square couldn’t have done it, but Square are weird and never make any sense, and whatever the reason was I do hope these ports get native versions on Switch 2.

transversal stutter: This has plagued us since the dawn of time and this affects everything it happens when the game loads in other chunks of the world again it can be a pretty easy fix as a lot of games goes for the "dump the other half other map when the player touches a invisible line approach" what causes a stutter everything you go through that area

The msx port of FF1 was sloppy at best, making new bugs while attempting and failing to fix old ones.
FF4 GBA had many many game breaking glitches added to it that did not exist in the original or even the ps1 version (atb glitches mostly, game lockups on occasion)
Xbox 360 version of FF11 on launch had a nasty bug that logged you out randomly after 5 to 10 minutes, the system would go into screen saver mode and kick you out of xbox live, thus kicking you out of the game. This was fixed about 3 weeks after launch.

Honestly, the Dissidia Port has to be the most dissapointing one on this entire list. Not just because of how bad it was, but because of the damage it seems to have done to that spinoff series. If Dissidia NT had just remained a weird arcade game no one outside of japan ever played...we've been there before. It would've remained this obscure thing that was forgotten quickly by most players. But instead, they invested money to make a port for several plattforms, delivered a dissapointing product, and damaged both the series reputation worldwide, as well as the chances of getting another game in the original style. If they had never made that port, the Dissidia series would have a much better chance today of getting a new game, especially with fighting games being once again on the rise. Seriously, none of the other ports on this list can claim to have left such a negative, lasting impact on its series.

Problem with porting the OG Dissidia games is that some of the EX Burst mechanics involve button mashing, and you can't carry that over to PC very well at all. The reason why they work on say, PSP, is because the buttons on the PSP are pressure-sensitive whereas keys on a PC keyboard are not. I feel that the original FF7 port on PC was far worse than the FF8 one. I had the misfortune of playing it on several systems in 1998 and found it to be incredibly unstable. I would get frequent crashes, losing progress often if there were no save points nearby.
The music was awful and relied on your sound card even more than the FF8 port did (One Winged Angel didn't have any lyrics if you didn't have one particular type of sound card), and it really didn't like ATi graphics cards. It had a compatibility tester program with it that, if your card didn't meet all the arbitrary requirements, would force you into software rendering mode at 1/4 of the screen, which meant for my first FF7 playthrough, my screen was the size of a postage stamp.
Bugs from the PSX version such as broken Magic Defence were still in, and the battle scenes were choppy and looked a lot poorer than their PSX counterparts.
You would also have to wait for FMVs to be streamed from the CD, which would lock up the game for 5-10 seconds every time an FMV was due on screen in order for the CD-ROM to spin up, which was a nightmare for some field scenes that used FMVs as a background (mainly in Northern Crater).
It was a bloody awful experience, so when FF8's port came round a few years later, it was a breath of fresh air to find most of this had been fixed. I even liked that they had the original version of Eyes on Me as an audio track on disc 3. Sadly the FMV lockup issue was still present but there wasn't a way to fix that really aside from having the entire disc image on a hard drive rather than CD-ROM, but I had a much better time with FF8 on PC than I did with FF7.

I really enjoyed the FFVII Switch port and ran into very few issues with it, so when I finished the game I decided to pick up the FFIX port shortly after, having done no research beforehand because my experience with VII's port was so good. I regretted my decision the moment I entered the first battle and was greeted by a load screen that lasted longer than 10 seconds. It honestly gave me whiplash after having just played through VII, which had instant battle load times, and I never got used to it. The only saving grace was that subsequent battles within the same area loaded much faster, but anytime you entered a new area your first battle would take agonizingly long to load.
I also experienced a very prominent hardlock in cutscenes where the game would get stuck on a text box that never advanced, and the only solution was to close and relaunch the game. If it wasn't for the fact that the game autosaves extremely frequently I would have never reached the ending. It's a shame that the Switch port is this terrible because I really enjoyed the game's story but I simply don't see myself giving it another playthrough in the future because of these problems.

A Realm Reborn, Heavensward even 1.0 all had to restrict themselves to run on PS3 (1.0 never released on PS3 but it was intended for it and developed with it in mind) and the game is only now recovering from it. From things like areas having weird teleports and designs to avoid areas from getting overloaded to a lot of gear pieces having to be altered (Like Odin's outfit not having a cape because the PS3 couldn't handle it) to entire raids being redesigned to run better. There was genuine cheers when the discontinuation of it was announced with Stormblood, it was that hated.

They lack common PC features (or features are broken), have weird bugs, suffer from poor performance, etc. Even recently, the Kingdom Hearts games were brought to Steam, but they were completely unaltered from their Epic Games versions that launched 2 years prior.
Unfortunately, those versions had a ton of issues, and Square never went back & corrected any of them in all that time. FF7 Remake also has a bad stuttering issue that requires workarounds, but then those workarounds create their own issues (like screen tearing & bad HDR).

I knew the VIII PC port had to be here. The worst part is that the incredibly awful "One Man Kitchen Band" version of the VIII OST still haunts VIII Remastered and can randomly load in to assault the player's ears. It's an absolute nightmare and a tragedy for such an amazing soundtrack.

I know this is just for FF but every time I hear Square Enix and broken PC port I get reminded of NieR Automata, not only the game was atrocious when launcher, recieving 0 support from SE, having to depend on modding to fix issues as simple as having the game on proper fullscreen, but also, when the game launched on Xbox and W10/Microsoft Store, all these issues were fixed but there wasn't any news of a Steam patch with these fixes. Fortunately, unlike FF XIII-2, when the community united in backlash against SE, a patch was released to the Steam version.

I didn’t like how 12 was treated. They released 12 and then the new PlayStation console was released and it didn’t support 12. 12 was a huge game with an enormous amount of content. To me, an adult with a full time job and a completionist, it was like playing an online multiplayer game. There was no way I was finishing that in a year! And they did it dirty by releasing a new console that didn’t support a game that I felt had also just been released.
I dated a guy who did finish 12 but he raced through it without doing any of the extras. “Well that stuff isn’t important.” Not important??
“Do you know how much work, blood, sweat and sanity went into the development of this game? The extra stuff isn’t important my ass! You appreciate everything those people did for you by painstakingly finding every cheeky little tidbit in a game that those artists took the time to code and brainstorm into it damnit!” His mother was rolling. That’s what he gets for dating a woman gamer who aspires to be a voice actor.

The steam port of FFXIII-2 was essentially unplayable for me. It took me 3-4 hours of attempting the opening sequence as the game would get progressively more glitchy and corrupted as time went on. It would either crash during the loading screen between the Lightning and Serah sections OR I'd actually load into the Serah section and everything would be too distorted for me to even find the save point. I did manage to eventually save there and upon reloading the game I was able to play... for a bit. It would still get progressively worse over time until it crashed every hour or so. Never finished it.

When I first went to play XIII on my PC I couldn't even launch the game. It would crash before getting to the main menu. I could only get past that by lowering the resolution to 720p and putting the game on minimal settings (I have a 12th gen i7 and a RTX 3070ti btw). But still, the game would crash after 2 mins of hitting play. I had to download 20+ mods to make the game playable, and that alone cost me almost 10 hours.

Having just finished it a few days ago, the Steam version of FFIV: The After Years easily could've had a spot on this. Mostly because everything you can imagine makes the game crash. Using bands, opening treasure chests, looking at the bestiary, even just triggering certain battles. You'd think it was a Bethesda game with how often it would CTD. You throw the other dumb changes and compromises that version has, like the awful framerate in battle, the unchanged mobile UI, and a buggy pause that loves to kill the music if you use it even once, and it's just misery to play.
