Doner Kebab: How The Turkish Dish Came To Germany

  • The doner kebab is one of the most popular snacks in Germany, but it originates in Turkey. So how did the kebab find its way to Germany and became so successful?
There are differences between Turkish and German kebabs. In Turkey, it’s often served with rice and vegetables on a plate. However, Germans usually like to have their kebab in pita bread stuffed with vegetables and topped with different sauces. Several Turkish immigrants claim to have invented the German version - the “Döner”.

It's great to see a look into the history, something I researched myself years ago. Like many places in the world, the Doner has taken a journey to different versions. In Canada, you see it called Shawarma which is usually more of a Syrian/Lebanese style, and the origin of the word Shawarma comes from the Turkish word Cevirme- to turn. Then we have the Greek version called the Gyro. Mexico has the Taco Pastor which they adapted from Lebanese migrants. We even have the likes of David Chang trying to use the method of grilling meat as it rotates making some Korean-style meat. One thing in Canada that people on the East Cost in Newfoundland - Nova Scotia like is this super sweet white sauce that in my opinion is awful and masks the taste but the drunk evening eaters love it. Obviously, it's just a filler for them as their taste buds are dead by 2am drinking. The Iskender kebab which you see in the video in Turkey is the one on the plate placed on top of bread with some butter drizzled on top and some yogurt on the side is the one that I enjoy the most, but it's not cheap and not for the everyday meal like they have in Germany or the rest of the world. Enjoy your kebab!

I would say the Turkish version is better but to each their own.

I would kill for a doner kebab right now, where I live in the US I have to drive 1.5 hours to eat one.

The quality of Döners varies a lot. There are some extremely nasty Döner places but also some quite fancy ones.
Rule of thumb is generally: you get what you pay for. I wouldn’t buy a Döner at a place that sells theirs for under 5€ maybe even more.

İt depend a lot but good döner is usually fresh imo there are many type of bread mainly the half round shaped (pide), the flatbread (yufka) and the ciabata for a döner but freshly backed and cooked in the stone oven are the best ones.

It’s especially awesome if you want your rear end to explode. I prefer the hotdogs at the train stations chains.

Over 22 years ago I had my first Doner Kebab when I was with the US Army, my mouth is watering from watching this video, I may have even finished!
