    I had the honor of doing this back in 1994 with my deceased uncle James Alley from Austin tx. We took so many in real and beautiful pictures, some are with his son, and some my ex spouse for unknown reasons decided to keep. I hope to one day do this, one more time. I’m glad to have found this video ❤️❤️ some of my most favorite memories… above all- THE GOATS RULE ✌️

    Super job on the video and soundtrack!! Makes me anxious to hop on the train and spend a few days in the Basin.

      …especially liked the shots on the catwalk in the clouds.

    This was awesome! Thanks for taking the time to edit this into a video and putting it out here for us to enjoy. Hope to be there this summer!

    Amazing footage and what an incredible trip. No way I could've climbed on top of that rock to get that view at 2:17. Thanks for sharing.

    Well done boys...and thank you for posting. Our group is looking at this trip next summer 2020. And I know the fog killed your views but it did make for some pretty awesome pics.

    When you climbed that peak with the gopro on your head I almost fell out my chair lol. felt like I was virtually up there. If you used a 3d camera you could turn that footage into a DIsney ride. good adventure.

    Thanks for sharing the video. Can you please answer some questions for me? How far total is your hike? How many days? Did you have trouble acclimating to the elevation? How high does the train drop you off? What was your total elevation gain? Did you have special shoes or spikes to climb the rocks? Would you rate this a difficult hike. Planning a trip from the train with some experienced hikers, but seems we always bring one or two that are not in the best of shape. Thanks , Guy Midland, TX

    Great video, headed up there Tuesday. How did you get rights to use the music?

    Looking at a 4-5 day trip the week of July 4th! Considering Granite Lake Continental Divide Loop. Was this area crowded? How many days did you hike?

  • @daronshort
    @daronshort  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm not familiar with the Granite Lake Continental Divide loop, but you won't be disappointed with Chicago Basin. It was not too busy the days we were there in late August, but I would guess July 4th could be a bit more mayhem.

      We'll be there the week before the 4th, arriving Monday the 29th and leaving on the 3rd, so I'm hoping we beat the crowds. Great video! It looks like we'll be doing the Basin via the railroad out of Silverton. How long did the hike to the Basin from Needleton take?

    • @daronshort
      @daronshort  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tommy Blanton Our group of 5 was spaced out on the hike in. I was out in front and it took me roughly 2.5 hours. There are campsites before the basin, but push on until you get views of Peak 18 and Windom. You won't regret it.

      Tommy Blanton I have a set of 14er maps from Gerry Roach that I customize before big trips like this. if you give me your email, I can send it to you.

    I know this trip was 9 years ago, but what kinds of day packs did you and your pals use while scrambling those peaks? (Liter capacity, etc.) @daronshort

    Most excellent adventure. My kids and I will be doing this in August. My concern is the Mount Eolus approach (ridgeback). Is it tame or extreme for teenagers? Well done!!

      Brian Stuy
      Are you referring to the catwalk, Brian? As with most any Class 3/4 climb, it all depends on comfort level with exposure. There was nothing technical about the catwalk or the final scramble to the summit (as long as you stay on route), but I can see how some less experienced hikers might freeze.

      Thanks. I have to say, the photo of the group with the peaks in the background is epic!! I hope to capture a similar image with my family. Was that on one of the peaks?

    • @daronshort
      @daronshort  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Stuy That photo was taken just below the summit block of Sunlight. It's one of my favorites, too.

    • @LehiBoy
      @LehiBoy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn't Sunlight the peak you have to jump a gap to get to the peak of? I was thinking of passing that one, but now I must reconsider if that is way to get the pic!!

    • @daronshort
      @daronshort  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Stuy You are correct, Brian. At 2:17 in the video, you can see the point of view from the actual summit block. Where the group of people are gathered below is where we took the photo. Regardless, there are a multitude of great perspectives for photos in this area; it's hard to go wrong.

    Incredible! My son and I are planning on doing this summer. Do you think a 13 yr old can handle this?

    • @daronshort
      @daronshort  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do I think a 13 year old can handle it? Yes, but not every 13 year old is the same. That's a question only you (as his father) and he (as a climber) can answer. It will depend on his experience, fitness level, and mental resolve. Good luck!

    Nice video! What ridge are you on at 4:39? Pretty epic with that fog.

    • @daronshort
      @daronshort  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's called the Mt. Eolus catwalk. The fog definitely upped the epic factor.

    Where did you park your vehicles?

      We parked in Silverton on an empty lot a block from the train station.
