Glenn, I’m getting back into bass playing and want your opinion on decent starting bass guitars and other accessories. Yes I’m a bass player who has money and no I don’t need a ride. I can even afford new strings when needed.
I'm all in on learning. Right/wrong? Most claim he is wrong when it comes to his opinions. Those are his opinions, and he can't be wrong have yet to see where he is wrong when it comes to facts
GF: "I can just help you make a slighter better sounding record" For what it's worth, I think that quite an understatement. What I've learnt from you has helped me go from producing my own noise, to producing what sounds better than anything I've ever paid(!) for previously, in just a few weeks. I know the information I learn on here is reliable and everything i've taken onboard has REALLY helped me. My #1 source of information regarding production and sound / audio gear.etc I'm sure I speak for many others here too. Thanks G and the SSS team, - I appreciate you!
On the topic of weddings being more expensive, I was a traveling local DJ for a few years, and I can absolutely attest that there 100% is a "wedding tax", in that services are just more expensive simply because they are for weddings. the only thing that is truly worth the cost is a good photographer. You can skimp on everything else. Nobody is going to remember your centerpieces, nobody's going to remember your dress, nobody's going to remember your bouquet, nobody is going to remember your table runners, your cake, the dinner you served, or the music you played. All of those things are only there for a few hours of one night. What truly lasts forever isn't even "the marriage" or "the love we shared,". No, the photography is the only thing that will last forever. Do not cheap out on your photographer. The big secret of weddings is that the pictures are the only reason that you're even having a wedding. And a great photographer will preserve those memories forever.
Weddings are generally remembered by the guests in one of two ways: 1) There WAS a wedding, but details are hazy. This is if things go well. 2) Every detail of the wedding. This is if things go spectacularly amiss.
Oh man, that bands song got me through some really hard times and is the soundtrack of my youth...Wait a minute**looks at headstock of guitarist** Nevermind.😜
I am your target audience. I have a trade, so no worries there. I'm a guitar player who likes to record only for my own amusement but do want it to sound as good as possible to jam in my car. I've learned tons from this channel since 2014. I've also seen you, say hey I was wrong. Not many creators have the integrity to admit they made a mistake and then adjust. 🤘
The exact same thing here! Except I don't jam my songs in my car, but on my recording setup! And I've been learning from Glenn nearly two decades already (it's not a competition, not meant it like that, just trying to point out how long Glenn has been on it), the drum recording guide on Sneap forums was a real holy grail when I finally got to use more than two mics/tracks!
@@UltraVarietyChannel Some people like snowboarding because it's fun, some people like it because they can make money with it. I like recording because it is fun, just like any other hobby.
I'm not big on metal, but I find your videos are a gas, highly entertaining with good product reviews on gear I can afford (well mostly!). It's not a wonder to me that you've got yourself a channel with half a million subs, because you just got yourself another one today! Great stuff!
I knew a guy a few years back who had gone to a recording school and come out with a degree. He let me hear a few things he'd done, and I have to say they were very slick and polished. They sounded as good as anything I've heard released commercially, and better than a lot of it. Last I knew, he was working in a call centre. Sad, but true.
I have the first Woods of Ypres cd...sounded great. I actually bought it from Dave Gold himself. I used to talk to him every week at HMV. He turned me on to so many bands. So sad to hear of his passing. R.I.P. David.
Glenn your breadth of knowledge and experience, even with my more recent viewership on your channel, has already been amazing AND SO HELPFUL. Dude, you rock. Cheers 💯🤘
Glenn you have helped me immensely. I was floundering and unsure how to even approach recording. Now I've got a mini personal studio up and running and I am like a giddy child every time I step in there. Thanks for everything man!
Absolutely hit the nail on the head, I doubt any of us will ever have a hit record but that isn't even the point for most of us. My wife and I LOVE going to see live bands, listening to new music, and we both love performing, it enriches our lives and we have made some pretty cool friends along the way. While sounding good is still important to us we aren't on a rock star budget and that is one of the reasons I love this channel. I think you have demonstrated that you don't have to compromise your sound if you use your limited resources wisely. This frees us up to focus on other things, like having fun.
I would love to see a complete series of videos about the entire process of creating a an album. Getting hired by a band, getting them setup in the studio, setting up the equipment, recording, mixing, mastering, etc.
Hey Glenn, thanks for all the help over the years. Currently Im not doing heavier music as much anymore, but your advice on guitar sound and mixing in fucking INVALUABLE, even in what I do (right now I'm working with a pop band called Echobreak). With love, fuck you Glenn!
Glenn - you’ve made Many hit records. Possible not when checking record sales, but calculating total views of all the episodes in your channel you’ve made for us all to view. This is the best U-tule channel ever made. My humble thanks.
Hey Glenn! Love watching your videos and hearing your 2 cents on tone. I tend to agree with you on the pickups vs speakers debate, but I've been seeing a lot of talk about Lace Alumitone humbuckers lately. These pickups don't use a traditional copper winding setup, but instead use dual bar magnets coated in aluminum with a step up transformer built into them. With the Lace's being such a different design to traditional pups, I think it would be interesting to put them against some standard wound pups and see what kind of difference can be heard. I have a set of the Deathbuckers from Lace and I truly think there's a very noticeable difference in clarity. I hate using buzzwords to describe things I can't necessarily put my finger on, so I'll leave that for you to decide. Hope you find this as interesting as I did! Keep up the good work!
I’d still love to see you do a deep dive into Extinction Level Event- writing a track, mixing it, and showing off the effects, compressors, and functions within your awesome program- I love it, but I’m certain I’m not using its complete functionality!!
Hey Glenn, thanks for all the great help and information you share with us all. I have a small but money saving tip for the home studio owners that have pets. DONT ACCIDENTALLY LOCK THE LITTLE FUCKERS IN THE STUDIO!! THEY DESTROY SHIT!! I’m speaking from experience here, I have an acoustic panel that sits on a ledge up behind my two 27 inch Apple monitors that I thought was secured well enough, well it turns out it wasn’t! My very curious cat (Slinky) decided it would be a great idea to climb up behind it and push it off the ledge, knocking my computer monitors over onto my laptop and audio interface, putting a lovely big crack in the glass! Fortunately all the leads plugged into the back stopped them falling onto the floor and completely destroying them. I’m sure my heart stopped beating for a fucken long time when I realised what had happened! Luckily for me, I picked everything up, still holding my breath but swearing profusely, plugged everything back where it’s supposed to, fired everything back up and it all worked! Thank fuck! The new screen glass cost me $140 bucks and Slinky is still around 😂. Now both my monitors are secured to the desk! And the acoustic panels are also secured! The lesson here is MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS SECURED AND KEEP THE PETS OUT 🤘🤘
Glenn seems to know his shit, so I would listen to him! I'm 60 and remember replacing amp speakers with church organ speakers, when I was 15. Mad differences.
The fact that you took time to answer to the fender clean vs mesa dual rec shows that even if you yell a lot, actually you have a lot of patience cause damn that was a dumb comment. Keep doing these Glenn, you are amazing!
I have found my sound, and guess what? It’s in my cabinet. Even more surprising, I favored Chinese 2018 V30s for mixing with WGS ET65s, and it rules with every amp I’ve thrown at it! I have nicer and more coveted MIE year 2000 V30s, but I find the harsher 2018 ones mix better with my WGS speakers and they sound incredible. Who woulda thunk it?! It’s all about experimenting and making what you have work for you!
Hey Glen. Big fan of the channel. I'd really like to see a full video on the subject of setting up a basic beginner home studio from scratch. Assume the viewer knows absolutely nothing. Teach us the cable routing options for Di, Emulated output, and a mic'd cab. Setting up audio drivers and a DAW. Also when to use a DI and Re amp box. Maybe go through some the terminology like vst's, plugins, and clipping. I know we can find this info scattered throughout video's on your channel. But single crash course for the dummies, would be great.
GLEEEEEENNN!!!!! I was trying to get a Red Hot Chilli Peppers tone out of my Mesa Boogie amp for decades. I kept switching the speaker and NOTHING!!!! I finally noticed there is a switch that says "Clean".... I pressed it to Clean and BAM!!!! All of a sudden, RHCP TONE!!!! I think this is something you should talk about on your show!!!!!!
Hey! Long time watcher of the show (think one of my questions was on single digit episode if viewers comments.) Your videos made me come to the decision to sell my Gibson SG. After years of battling it to keep it in tune, I got a string butler, graph tech bridge and locking tuners IT DID NOTHING. Now I have a Solar V and it sounds great.
New to the channel and love it. Nostalgic for me frankly, reminds me of brutally honest musicians over the years who see things very simply, black and white. Love the passion and the sarcasm. You can tell it’s real and there’s not a lot of real left anymore. Thanks for the content.
I got hold of that HB vertical 2x12 about 4 or 5 years ago, after saying fuck it on building my own cab and buying the speakers. I used it to write my first album and was INCREDIBLY pleased with the way that album came out. To this day, when im not getting the sound i want with IRs, im reamping into that cab and get precisely what im after. That magnificent bastard is one HELL of a grab!
The funny thing about the cheap HB cab is that it is actually made pretty well. It doesn’t really take much to build a good cab. It can be done at a low cost pretty easily. I prefer to learn how the hell they are able to sell cabs for less than the retail price of the speaker in them
Some great comments in this episode. I always tell people to avoid using credit cards and save up for what they want. Taking the time to save will help deal with the marketing excitement and if after waiting you still want it then you will likely be happier with the purchase. The average couple spends a year to a year and a half planning their wedding day, but they spend less than 10 hours planning for their financial future. I love gear as much as the next person but I find it best to learn to get the most out of what you have first and if that does not solve the issue then look for the gear that fits the need.
Glen! I ran my 5150 into my Captor X with different IR’s on the 6 preset channels, and wouldn’t you know it, the tone difference was drastic. Some guy has been screaming about speakers on TH-cam but I can’t recall who… Keep up the great work!
I plan to record my own recordings, and maybe add some musicians I know into the mix, but I'm here for the reviews and quick advice. If I make a hit record (which I doubt), that's totally on me. Keep up the reviews, Glenn!
The speaker debate is funny. The speaker is a huge part of your tone. I had a Marshall MX212 with Celestion 70/80 speakers and a Harley Benton 2x12 Vintage....... the 70/80 speakers were so bad, I thought the amo sounded bad (Marshall DSL20) . When I go the HB I was very pleased. Now The V30s did not define the tone, just improved it. My DSL20 vs my Recto 25 sounded completely different with the v30s. So much in fact I purchased a Greenback becuase I did not like the recto and the v30. Wasn't bad, it was just too "sharp". I used various mics for playback and the mics made a huge difference as well. I've since switched to all digital as the tech is only getting better and better.
Glenn, I really hope you get to read this. I am 51 years old, and I am a guitar player for 35 years. I'll admit I'm not a sound guy at all and I hate to tweak and search for sound. I like to plug in and play. I've been a subscriber for quite a long time to your channel and love it. I learn something new every episode.. I bought the 5150 iconic combo about six or seven months ago and was so excited only to be very disappointed. I could not find a good metal sound no matter how much I tweaked with it. Yes I did the whole stupid thing of trying different pedals, different pickups and nothing worked. Then I saw your video about the speakers and decided to give it a try. I ordered. the Mojotone 25 BvM and installed it into my Iconic. You are a Godsend Glenn.! The Mojotone woke this amp up. And it is like a completely different animal. Without much tweaking at all I was able to get a killer guitar tone. Thank you so much for helping us idiots out!!! Much love.!
The impedance of the speaker dictates how much of the power coming from the amplifier is actually pushed. If you take a speaker with 8ohms and a speaker with 16 ohms side-by-side and hook them up to the same amplifier the speaker with the lower impedance will be louder because it is exhibiting less resistance to the amplifier. This is more noticeable with home stereos than guitar speakers. Usually speakers with lower resistance are a little cleaner sounding and if you have bad electrical problems in your house they can be helpful in hiding some of the 60 cycle hum coming from your amplifier. As far as the way they sound, yeah there could be a slight difference but nothing that I would bother trying to figure out. Especially with guitar speakers because there are already shrill compared to home audio speakers anyways. in the home audio world anyways a higher impedance speaker is more or less just used to clean up dirty electrical signals with certain amplifiers. And can also be used to increase the amount of power that the amplifier is putting out. If you look at the back of an amplifier it will give you a certain amount of power at a certain amount of resistance if you cut that resistance in half the power will double if you double the resistance the power will get cut in half. simple electrical 101. all you got to do is Google ohms law, it applies to anything that has electricity running through it whether it be a blender, a microwave or an audio system. If you do not know the basics of that then trying to figure out which speaker you want is pointless because you don't even understand how they work. I would imagine with a guitar amplifier changing the resistance of the speaker would change the characteristics of when the amp actually breaks up because it is changing the amount of power that the amplifier is actually putting out so that may be a thing I'm not sure. I am by no means a guitar speaker or guitar amplifier expert even though I am a guitar player but I did go to school for audio design with home theater systems and entertainment venues. So most of that knowledge is applicable. Hope that helps anybody that was confused.
When you are browsing for new equipment everything could be shining like pff, a diamond. Just untill you see the pricetag. That’s where I adopted a filosofi, that makes me look at every would be purchase in terms of how it will improve, enrich or in any way make my life easier, better or happier. Every purchase I do now, in all aspects of life goes through this process, and I feel enriched every time. Just my two cents on what Glenn said. And thanks for shedding light on not only the recording music parts, but on other aspects of being a soundengineer, Gleen. Much love! Also which DI’s would you recommend other then the countryman, it’s nice have choices and be able to make an informed decision!
Uff the end was vague.. not trying to cheap out as such, but as a guitarist, bassist, drummer and composer on a budget, I’d love to save some bucks on the ‘essentials’… those bucks saved, will help in the long run. I know you already made a video that’s almost covering what I’m requesting, but! Are there cheaper alternatives that will do the job, and when does the pricetag start to take the glamour out of these products? Maybe I’m requesting budget lists 😂
Ayo Glenn! PLEASEEEE do a demo on the black star carry on guitar! I’ve watched ton of videos but I just don’t trust any other TH-camr to give me an honest review like you would! Thanks! Much love from Texas and a big FUCK YOU GLENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!
I just worked on a sound crew last week for a friend who needed some help. The band showed up with their own in ears and simply plugged into the board. They had their sound dialed in and ready to go, with their mix on a stick for the 32 channel mixer. There was not an amp on stage everything went direct. The guitarist used a Fractal pedal and NO ONE KNEW THERE WAS NO AMP ON STAGE!!! So, I say it depends on your level of understanding of the equipment you choose and learn to use. Love your vids Glenn, and i dont even play metal! You rock!
Glenn!!!!!! The attitude of some people on here talk is similar to what I deal with as a coach. “I played JV football and I’m telling you that you need to switch to another defense.” I used to nicely explain that I played for 20+ years and have coached since. Now I just chuckle and walk away. Simply put I know WTF I’m talking about. I didn’t learn it from a book or TH-cam. I learned from close to 3 decades of experience as a player and coach. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your knowledge, experience and skills.
Yeah, but if someone is telling you to switch to another defense, I'm guessing that your defense isn't doing great. The person may not be right, but he may not be wrong either, lol. I'm a Raiders fan, so I'm going through the same thing. It seems like my coach has a high powered offense that can't average more than 15 points/game. He needs to do something different because what he is doing isn't working. Or he can be stubborn and say, "I've been doing this for decades. I know what I'm doing" and he will be doing that all the way back to an offensive coordinator position back in New England, lol. Imagine if the engineer took that approach with Alice in Chains and completely dismissed the idea of micing the back of an open back 1x12 and said, "I've been doing this for decades..." Then Facelift and Dirt would probably not sound nearly as good. I'm guessing that unorthodox approach was because Jerry wasn't happy with the sound he was getting, so the engineer just kept trying new things. What he didn't do was tell Jerry that he is experienced and that his guitar sounds great.
When that happened our team went undefeated and won their championship. Lol our defense averaged 2.4 points allowed per game. This kids parent wanted us to switch to a 4-3 from our 4-4. His kid was a backup Safety and only was on field in our nickel and Dime packages. He wanted more time for his kid It happens all the time to every coach I’ve ever known.
I agree that mix was sick!!! That sound was as good as any "top selling album" I've ever heard...in my 45+ years of collecting music. Doesn't pay the bills, but take the praise nonetheless.
The Woods Of Ypres album you did was excellent. That was such a cool band. They would have been a major name by now if David Gold had lived. That was a major loss to Canadian that few people know about.
As far as the ohm rating and how it affects the sound, that AC resistance, known as impedance, affects many parts of the Thiele/Small parameters. Many of the manufacturers publish the T/S specs for their individual drivers. I'd be suspect if all other parameters are exactly the same. Most of the time, it tends to just affect the very low end and box size required to optimize the bass response. Go to a place like Parts Express and find a driver that has multiple impedance versions and look at their T/S parameters as well as their frequency response graphs. That'll get you started on understanding what the differences really are.
I had a question about DIs but you already answered it in the video so instead I just wanna say thanks for these type of videos, really does make my bass player brain pay attention.
Cheap badge solution: 1. Remove brand badge off speaker grille (take the Harley-Benton badge off of the cab). You can leave it like that, but if you are a total brand snob. 2. Buy Marshall plastic logo badge. 3. Glue, screw, or double-sided tape new badge on cabinet face.
I wish some of the wingers that make crappy comments would try to do a demo video, do all the audio and editing or do anything for that matter. It's a lot of work . Love the channel!
Grandmaster GLEEENNN Sensai of SMG! I've watched enough of your videos to pick up a solid basis of understanding for mixing in like a year or so, so now i finally had chance to use the "mixing metal with free plugins" course i got back in lockdown as a bundle with the adam steel reaper stuff. (Seriously, great stuff, and great videos, you're killing it dude!) I have replaced a few of the stuff with waves plugins or whatever, but I have had to do a few adjustments with the amp sims (We're all Recording remotley so i can't get at the other band members amps- i've been trying some of the neural stuff and i think i'm actually preffering the Ignite emissary with some good quality IRs and free overdrive pedal vsts. but i'm digressing) i'm wondering if im doing something wrong as all the more expensive VST's seem to go for lower sounding distortion tones that seem to pull them closer to the bass register and looses some of the clarity and energy? so i just keep using the emissary. anyhoo, again, ADHD brain aside; my big thing i wanted to say was everything is sounding great like my orchestrals and cleans and whatnot, but the course doesn't cover extreme metal vocals (Screams, growls, etc) so i've just been recording three with two at the back panned and lower in volume, but use the previously mentioned Overdrive Pedal VST to make them cut through the mix, and one at the front for clarity. anything you would advise that could improve it? (sorry if this is a long comment, I am a Bassist after all) Love the show and appreciate everything that i'm learning.
Id like to see you do a video on setting up a guitar rig for recording, from plugging in the Audio interface to setting up the interface with a daw, as well as placing the mics and recording, its pretty basic but would be a great help!
GLENN!!!! Excellent video as always. Quick idea for a video maybe? The more we record and mix ourselves, the more we realize how important the source tones/sounds are (duh right?). I think it could be really cool if you go through fan/amateur raw stems and give feedback on how well things were recorded, if the source tones are conducive to a quality mix, etc. Just thought it’d be cool to hear your take on tracks before the mix. Thanks for years of amazing content! You’re quoted daily in the band chat 😂
The ohm rating of a speaker is the electrical impedance (resistance to change in voltage and current) of the electromagnetic coil. With a lower impedance, *slightly* more voltage with *slightly* less overall power will be sent through the coil to the speaker to get the same volume, and the coil will be a tiny bit more sensitive to dynamics in the signal. This would mean that, in an ideal world, there would be an itty bitty but possibly noticeable improvement in the high end of a lower impedance speaker. Here in the real world, the differences between cone material, angle, placement, manufacturing tolerances and possibly the phase of the moon will almost certainly have a bigger impact. The main thing is to match the impedance between speaker and amp, lest your amp think it can send way more voltage to the speaker than it can handle and you re-enact "Smoke on the Water" in your studio. Most speaker manufacturers offer each of their models in different ohm ratings because they can sell more speakers to customers with different amp sizes.
I produce Techno but stumbled on this channel when searching TH-cam for videos about sidechain compresion about 3 years ago and now i'm hooked. I have no idea why I watch but its always enjoyable. I was a metal head in the late 80s and early 90s which might have something to do with it and you sometimes wear a Bad News T-shirt which is always a sign of someone with taste (There's no fucking sheep in Mongolia)
"Sit on your purchase for a month".... There is a Harley Benton tele guitar that I have wanted for a couple of years. With the economy, I simply remind myself I am not a six stringer and it won't be used. Theee is an Ibby bass I have been absoluteky drooling over for a while, but it's $1600 and my $300 guitars have gotten me through all of my gigs, including the major ones, with the audience not knowing the difference. Great advice
i think we need a video about those racks.. i'm a techno producer (no, not that EDM garbage, proper underground stuff) who has recently starting incorporating guitar into my trax. as much as i adore drum machines & synths, outboard is my fizzy spot.. and i think we all wanna see those 19" gems 😉 i'm no longer a metal dude but i really enjoy your energy & straight forward takes. proper raw attitude. cheers Shouty Dude 😎
And if you want a Con Dense Her, microphone? I recommend the SHURE, SM-81. A Great, rugged, quality, microphone. That will not break easily. I've had mine since 1978! And they have been used extensively. After purchasing my first pair. I purchased a second pair also. I love them so much. They are fabulous. Though? I will admit. They don't exactly replace the Neumann, KM-84's, 85 or 86's. They sound close but not identical at all. The SM-81 actually have a hotter cleaner output. No hissy nonsense with those. They are phenomenal! I remember when I bought my first new. They were only $180 each. A bargain compared to today's price. And I got them as my poor man's, Neumann KM-84's. But they are not that. And there is a decided difference in the sound between those two. I do like the sweetness on the KM-84's. The SM-81's sound a bit more bright and brittle in comparison. They are very present sounding. And they take a lot of SPL very well. I love them. They are a go to for me. One of the few condenser microphones I use. As I had all of the great ones that were worth a lot of money. And I don't use those on cheap rock 'n' roll jobs. So I sold them last year. All of them. All of my Neumann collectors microphones are gone. And I owned them for nearly 40 years. And I do miss them. They were beautiful. But I've been able to live just fine, without them. Particularly with rock 'n' roll. But I've even use them. To record Grand Opera with. And they sounded great. So when you think you need a, Capacitor a.k.a. Condenser Microphone? You probably really don't. Just use the SM-57 or 58. But make certain. You purchase. The extra-large oversized, gray, Foam Pop Filter. For those microphones. Which prevents your lips. From getting too close. To the microphone diaphragm. That causes the worst tub be muddy, proximity effect. And the Foam Pop Filter. Will keep your lips and appropriate 2 inches away. From the microphone diaphragm. And what will you hear? You will hear that your microphone now has lower output. And it's going to sound virtually identical. To the, $400 US, SM-7B. How can it for only $100? The SM 7 uses the same microphone cartridge, capsule. As that in the, SM-57, the 58 and the no longer made, SM-56. Along with the SM-5. They all use the same, SM-57 capsule. There is no difference. The difference is in your distance of lips to diaphragm. And that's why everybody thinks the SM-7B puts out a lower output volume. From that of the 57 or 58's. And that would be correct. Because your mouth can get far closer to the 57 and 58. Then it can to the SM-7B. Or at least that's what I discussed with the application engineers at, SHURE. As I needed technical specifics. In order to write, studio building contracts. And you have to get all of the information. About the equipment outside and inside. Unfortunately with all of his background. I don't think Glenn has ever wired a full patch bay up in his control room? And doesn't have all of his ancillary processing gear. All dedicated to multiple patch bays. You need more than one! I've got over 18! Yes 18, patch bays of, 48 each. That's a minimum of, 384 patch points. Along with my 100 patch cords. And sometimes. On a mix. I will run out of patch cords. With over 100 patches in my patch bays. How do you get along without this? What haven't you done? You haven't wired a bunch of patch bays up. You need them. When I first build a control room. I pretty much start with designing the patch bays. How many you need. How many patch points you want. What order do you want them in? And do you have all the insert patches, also? So you got microphone in patch points. You got line in patch points. You've got, insert I/O patch points. You've got console output patch points. I wanted yet more patch points. I wanted separate patch points on microphone preamp outputs. To the equalizer inputs. Which was never supplied with this custom console. Because it was designed for Network TV News. And they didn't need to have such, extra patching capabilities. So those were left out. The patches only after the equalizer for the insert. Oh well! I've lived with it this way since 1984. And I'm still alive! To tell about it. And it's okay. As if I wanted, limiter on MIC preamp before EQ? I would leave the equalizer off. And take a direct output from that module. Then patched directly into the multitrack recorder. Bypassing the rest of the console. But that's just me. That's my modus operandi. I could not live without a judicious amount of patch bays. How do you live without them Glenn? You should be able to get some old crappy, CBC ones? Soak them in some, Tarn X. Then put them in the dishwasher. No dry cycle. They'll melt. And then, Voilà! New life to old patch bays. And you get yourself a role of 1000 feet of wire. And start wiring them up. Wired to its Christmas Tree, spayed lug interface. But without patch bays. Control Room Life would not be negotiable. I think I use my patch bays more than I use my audio console? The speaker monitoring problem is the easiest free fix of all. RemyRAD
Hey Glen. I love your channel. Pissed off when you showed us that we (guitarists) were so being bullshitted about tone because I also bought into the "gear" thing. Im 54 and I want to start using the digital platforms for playing and recording. The problem is I cant find a good vid that explains how to ...GET IT RIGHT!. Everyone is telling me gear this and that but nobody seems to say ok, you need to do this with your pc "daw?" Then the next step is..... I think you get my point. Seems like a big ask, but damn, if someone could break it down from my guitar cable to punching record that would be fuckin amazing. Thanks, Lost old school guitarist
Keep feeding the beast Glen!! Most of us appreciate you because of your sense of humor and apparent honesty. Everyone else is just being whiny and wouldn't have listened in the first place. Thanks man, you've also inspired me to grow out my mane!! Lol at least till it isn't possible cause I go bald, as a mid 30yr old I worry bout that
0:56 that's *all* you've done? That's amazing 👏 I've been in a studio and made an album once. That was great fun and the album.... sold less than 10 copies 😅 one to my folks. one to my future wife. You have a very impressive background and I mean that!
When comparing different ohms, maybe try to use the same amp & speaker, since we know speakers can vary. Like, my amp can switch between 4, 8, or 16 ohms & my cabinet has inputs for all three. Now that I'm thinking about it, I can do this test. I'm gonna go record and compare the same amp & speaker at all 3 different ohm settings.
I love your channel. Your exploration and advocation of Reaper forced me to get a deeper understanding of that tool (and really learn how to use compression and limiting). Reaper is flat-out amazing (but like all power-tools, takes a while to understand and use correctly). Using this DAW, I just finished recording and mastering an EP for Bandcamp that is, by far, the best sounding work I have made to date. Keep up the good fight and do not let the knuckleheads bring you down.
@SpectreSoundStudios, I had band practice a week before a gig and my power tubes blew. I talked to my fiancée and she said, “You need to get another amp”. I went out and got a Marshall Origin 50 head and an EVH 2X12 with creambacks (yes, I made sure to ask because you showed me that tone is in the speakers) and now that’s my new number 1 rig. I paid $1100 for the entire rig, which isn’t bad for a Marshall tube amp and a cab.
Overall, there shouldn't be a tonal difference between the same model of speaker in a different impedance. But I also can't think of a good way to actually test/evaluate due to how many other variables change through the amplification. JL Audio has a series of amplifiers that will give the same power output bewteen 1-8 ohms but I can't think of other options that have that and none going up to 16. *I just checked a random Orange amp and it's only rated at 8ohms and nothing else which makes me believe, you plug a 16ohm speaker to it and you get roughly half the power vs. an 8ohm. BIG impact to trying to compare speakers on an even playing field. The main reason for different options is to pair for amplifiers. Want a one speaker cabinet...8 ohm. 2 speaker cab....2 16ohm wired parallel for an 8ohm load. This gets really fun when you bring in dual voice coil speakers :)
Warning! (in case the person who asked before reads this) 2 8ohm speakers wired parallel to make 4ohms plugged into an amp only rated for 8ohms usually ends with smoke and a dead amp
The great thing about the speaker advice, it works for ALL genres of music and all amplified instruments. Modern ceramic speakers are also relatively inexpensive compared to other music products out there. Just do yourself a favor and learn how to properly install speakers. You can damage them if you go too ham on the screw/bolt/nut torque. A little soldering practice goes a long way too. Just be careful or you'll end up with a bedroom stacked with 12" boxed up speakers....like me.
I feel your frustration with the idiots that don't pay attention and then pick up either half the info or the wrong info. Part of my job is presenting project plans and I hate it. I've literally had people come up to me at the end and say stuff like "so it all starts in January" ten minutes after I've told them something starts in October. I love the show, stay strong, and fuck you Glenn! 😉
I think what the one guy was referring to about switching amp is the tone stack, aka how the tone controls and preamps are layered. This is the only thing that makes a difference in the sound between amps (comparing same to same) or how much distortion is available. Theres a really good video on someone comparing different parts of amps to figure out where tone comes from in an amp. Its the tone stack. Depending on the amp a lot of times you can get multiple amps to sound the same, although not necessarily at the same nob positions. Some amps you can get aounds only rhat amp can make (not saying its a good sound but only that amp may be able tl get it).
I am about to start recording demos to organize my music ideas and maybe completing the songs I am writing, I wonder if I should install the very outdated version of Cubase Elements I have a license for, spend money on upgrading the license, or go for something different for example Ableton. What do you recommend. I have most of the other equipment I need to start recording and will add over time as I can afford the gear.
Hiya, we’ve talked about mixing kick and mixing bass, but it’d be nice to discuss how they work together and how different approaches change your mix. It’d be cool to see the tools you use to get that meatheaded heaviness from the bass but having both oomph and definition on the kick
A speakers impedance changes an amplifiers voltage (wattage) output. If an amp is stable at 4 ohms it will put out the most power if combined with a 4 ohm woofer. If the speaker impedance is lower than the amps rating it will put out MORE voltage (wattage) than rated and is a huge cause of amplifier failure. If you run higher Ohm speakers your amp will put out LESS voltage (wattage) and sound less "loud" in most instances.
Glenn, I think you'll find a kindred spirit in Jim Lill. (I can't recall if you've mentioned knowing about his efforts, but they're right up your alley.)
Hey Glenn, ever considered trying out some of the DIY guitar kits that you can find from for example Thomann? Would be fun to see a video where you compare a guitar you built yourself vs something pre-built. A PRS-like guitar i built from one of those kits and cost me about 150$ in total feels qualitywise good enough after it being set up that it could be used to record with and that is with the stock hardware that Thomann shipped with it!
I'm just now realizing the riff from the Harley Benton cab test song sounds like a slowed down version of the title track from Mick Gordon's DOOM soundtrack.
Doing what you love for a living is the best reward for effort ever. Top selling records are great, but not necessary. As a musician, I’d love to be able to replace my current income at the factory I work at, and then some, making and selling music.
Just because an album sells well doesn't mean it's good, especially in 2023. I've given up recording for now, but you've been very helpful with learning to use Reaper effectively. I'm still here watching because I enjoy the gear reviews and the idiotic reader's comments. Thanks for sharing the knowledge Glenn.
Tone IS in the signal chain, and an important and relatively cheap part of it to replace is the speaker. We swapped out the stock speakers in an Avatar cabinet for a pair of Fanes and the difference was night and day.
Hey Glen, can you please do an episode on different mic placements and what they mean? What does “bright” mean, or “dark”, or “thin” and “fat”. I have a bunch of IRs from celestion, but am not sure how to mix and match them. I don’t have a DAW so I can only upload IRs to my amp/speaker sim (pedal based). It would really help understand how to mix and match different mic placements when tone shaping. Thanks!
Question: In acknowledging the sound is in the speakers - what about the things that the pickups do contribute? While it may sound 101'y - would love to see something regarding the impact or effects of features like Phase Reversal, Coil Tap/Gain Tap etc on the end signal and if there is any ear discernable difference Always a big fan of your techy offerings Mr Glen!

A bass player might use it to play the bass
please make a video how much you get for each promos like that, I've heard around 5K or much more? or you cannot tell?
The Weed Whacker 🤣🤣🤣
Glenn, I’m getting back into bass playing and want your opinion on decent starting bass guitars and other accessories.
Yes I’m a bass player who has money and no I don’t need a ride. I can even afford new strings when needed.
I was still putting on my headset so the first word I heard was "Manscaped". I thought "well this is going to be an interesting episode!"
I’m in the minority on this channel, I don’t try to out do the host. I’m here to learn. Thanks Glenn.
Me too.
I'm on the percentage that has critical thinking and is capable to understand that sometimes the host gets it right and other times he gets it wrong.
Exactly why I’m here. To learn!
Exactly. Glenn is wrong about a lot, and I just watch for entertainment, really. I don't need his help with studio stuff.@@andresilvasophisma
I'm all in on learning. Right/wrong? Most claim he is wrong when it comes to his opinions. Those are his opinions, and he can't be wrong
have yet to see where he is wrong when it comes to facts
GF: "I can just help you make a slighter better sounding record"
For what it's worth, I think that quite an understatement.
What I've learnt from you has helped me go from producing my own noise, to producing what sounds better than anything I've ever paid(!) for previously, in just a few weeks.
I know the information I learn on here is reliable and everything i've taken onboard has REALLY helped me. My #1 source of information regarding production and sound / audio gear.etc
I'm sure I speak for many others here too.
Weddings are generally remembered by the guests in one of two ways:
1) There WAS a wedding, but details are hazy. This is if things go well.
2) Every detail of the wedding. This is if things go spectacularly amiss.
I watch everything you publish and I've never touched recording equipment. I just love metal music, playing guitar, and learning new things.
Oh man, that bands song got me through some really hard times and is the soundtrack of my youth...Wait a minute**looks at headstock of guitarist** Nevermind.😜
Oh no, it wasn't a Gibson les Paul and a Marshall JCM 800 and a 4x12 loaded with celestion vintage 30s, I can't listen to this 😂
I am your target audience. 🤘
Thanks for watching for so long, Dean!
Same here. I record and make music cause its fun. I'm not trying to be a pro or anything but I like watching and learning how to improve.
It's also really hard to put out a top rock album nowadays. Metal is even harder to get on the charts.
I would love to see a complete series of videos about the entire process of creating a an album. Getting hired by a band, getting them setup in the studio, setting up the equipment, recording, mixing, mastering, etc.
No one will actually hire glenn... which is why he started a TH-cam channel.
Sorry about typos…have finnish auto-correction in this friggin tablet…
Bring back stupid musicians texts!
your right been recording local bands records for 13 years and watching this has made change some of techniques for the better
I mostly agree with you about recording school/music school... but don't underestimate meeting people and making genuine contacts.
People struggle to understand that you're not running after success but after recording music that talks to you with people you love
I’d still love to see you do a deep dive into Extinction Level Event- writing a track, mixing it, and showing off the effects, compressors, and functions within your awesome program-
I love it, but I’m certain I’m not using its complete functionality!!
I'd love to see a video about the importance of setting up proper cue mixes, talkback/headphone feeds, etc for tracking sessions.
The lesson here is MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS SECURED AND KEEP THE PETS OUT 🤘🤘
No bullshit, just straight up truth! This is why I subbed. Please keep it coming.👍
I've learned so much from watching you, Glenn. It's really given me a jumpstart and made approaching production way less intimidating!
Hey! Long time watcher of the show (think one of my questions was on single digit episode if viewers comments.)
Your videos made me come to the decision to sell my Gibson SG.
I prefer to learn how the hell they are able to sell cabs for less than the retail price of the speaker in them
Bulk pricing/business deals
Bulk pricing/business deals
Because Harley Benton is thomann's own brand. They don't lose a cut to any retailer because they're their own distributor.
It shows you how ridiculous retail prices are.
Hey Glenn! great running into you at Kensington Market last week, thanks for the picture!
Some guy has been screaming about speakers on TH-cam but I can’t recall who…
Keep up the great work!
Now
The V30s did not define the tone, just improved it.
I love all the videos I've seen so far. I learn something new and useful for my musical endeavors in every video.
great video Glenn, I Have learned alot about recording and gear from watching your videos, keep up the great work and cheers from Tuscaloosa,Al.!
I love how he mentions a MESA as the clean channel. It is like MESA started off modding fender amps so....probably gonna be a little fender like.
8ohm vas 16ohm challenge is on my list too! I recently put my first loaded my first 2x12 that is 16 ohm. Sounds amazing. I have 3 other cabs at 8ohm.
Glen you have helped a dunce guitarist such as myself a Jedi in the ways of the musical Force
Great ep! Thanks for explaining your library and how to get into it, for the next people!
“I played JV football and I’m telling you that you need to switch to another defense.”
I used to nicely explain that I played for 20+ years and have coached since.
He wanted more time for his kid
It happens all the time to every coach I’ve ever known.
1:39 is some of the funniest editing I have seen in a long time 😂
I agree that mix was sick!!!
@icankillbugs Who's WOY?
@icankillbugs sup devil
Great stuff man- Those Lewitt mics are amazing- one of the best investments I have ever made.
(Seriously, great stuff, and great videos, you're killing it dude!)
I have replaced a few of the stuff with waves plugins or whatever, but I have had to do a few adjustments with the amp sims (We're all Recording remotley so i can't get at the other band members amps- i've been trying some of the neural stuff and i think i'm actually preffering the Ignite emissary with some good quality IRs and free overdrive pedal vsts. but i'm digressing)
i'm wondering if im doing something wrong as all the more expensive VST's seem to go for lower sounding distortion tones that seem to pull them closer to the bass register and looses some of the clarity and energy? so i just keep using the emissary.
anyhoo, again, ADHD brain aside; my big thing i wanted to say was everything is sounding great like my orchestrals and cleans and whatnot, but the course doesn't cover extreme metal vocals (Screams, growls, etc)
so i've just been recording three with two at the back panned and lower in volume, but use the previously mentioned Overdrive Pedal VST to make them cut through the mix, and one at the front for clarity.
anything you would advise that could improve it? (sorry if this is a long comment, I am a Bassist after all)
Love the show and appreciate everything that i'm learning.
Great advice
i think we need a video about those racks..
i'm a techno producer (no, not that EDM garbage, proper underground stuff) who has recently starting incorporating guitar into my trax. as much as i adore drum machines & synths, outboard is my fizzy spot.. and i think we all wanna see those 19" gems 😉
i'm no longer a metal dude but i really enjoy your energy & straight forward takes. proper raw attitude.
cheers Shouty Dude 😎
‘Some’ of us would LOVE an amp with I AM A CHEAPO written on it... just think of the savings I’d make on printing costs.

Thanks,
Lost old school guitarist
Manscaped ...what a world we live in *roll eyes*
You know you’ve made it when you land a brand deal with Manscaped!! Congratulations GGLLENNN!!! Also FU 😊
The 15 seconds after minute 1 are the Real TRUTH, and I'm ok with that. :)
Love u Glenn!
Jim does incredible work!
Would love to see something on recording live shows on both audio and video. Very little out there on separating tracks to mix etc.
GLENNN!! Fuck the haters, you have been a blessing to me, been loving your videos for a few years now. Keep it up man
hey glenn!!! make a video about signal routing in your studio for all of us nerds out here
Tone IS in the signal chain, and an important and relatively cheap part of it to replace is the speaker. We swapped out the stock speakers in an Avatar cabinet for a pair of Fanes and the difference was night and day.
Happy Friday Glenn. Good show.
Thanks!
In my experience the biggest difference between 8 and 16 ohm is being able to push 2x as much surface for the same amp load.
I think pregain EQ makes as much difference in tone as the speaker cone. Which is why overdrives are so popular.
Question: In acknowledging the sound is in the speakers - what about the things that the pickups do contribute? While it may sound 101'y - would love to see something regarding the impact or effects of features like Phase Reversal, Coil Tap/Gain Tap etc on the end signal and if there is any ear discernable difference
Always a big fan of your techy offerings Mr Glen!
What's noteworthy is the effort you and your circle put in to do a good job doin what you enjoy.
