  • On Wednesday, I reviewed the Harley Benton Greenback 2X12. Some people became rather upset that I dared suggest that great results can be had, by using something OTHER than a Vintage 30. Buckle up, this one's gonna be FUN :). Get the Spectre Mega Bundle here: Includes Element Bass, ELE, Spenser's Course and so much more: spectreacademy...
It's only available for THREE days.
Edit: MIDI grooves aren’t included…. In got that part wrong!
    About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

I work in live production. In the last five years there's been a shift. It's become quite the norm to see guitarists for national and especially international acts playing Harley Benton and other "cheap" guitars. The general consensus is, they play great and thee artists don't have to sweat them being lost, stolen or damaged.

When I was first wanting to start my rig I did a lot of searching on affordable guitar cabs and one of the most helpful videos was your Harley Benton v mesa cab shootout video. It was what ultimately made me get vintage 2x12 for what would soon be a peavey triple xxx head. It’s been about 2 years now and while that faithful HB cab has served me well I decided to upgrade to a 4x12 but wanted something more unique. I found exactly that in Egnater VN-412 cab with elite-75 speakers and absolutely love it and it makes me stand out in the local scene for sure!

Also, I just got my new Kali LP-6 v2 6.5" studio monitors wired up to my interface and powered on today and holy shit, what a difference. Night and day from headphones. Thanks for the rec on those a while back too!!! I was sitting on a livestream this morning where there were tons of violins, brass, and taikos (those big standing drums that weigh hundreds of pounds) and man could you feel it when they were being played. Totally cool.
The e906 should be here today so it can sit with baited breath awaiting the cab too.

I recently found out about the JBL speaker that Fender used and started looking into it, since I've never heard of guitar speaker from them, and realized that their extended range woofers have pretty much the same range as guitar speakers, from 70 Hz to 5000-6000 Hz, with a resonance peak around 80 Hz. I bought one to try it out and was quite surprised by how nice (and different) they sounded, specially because they cost half the price of a guitar speaker. It would be cool to see you try something like this out, experimenting with non conventional stuff.

I went straight from your video the other day to Thomann's website and bought the 412 greenback cab and it showed up today. For anyone curious or on the fence about ordering: 1. Shipping to USA was 160 bucks. It said 3 days. It took 3 days. 2. They shipped it directly in the Harley Benton box, which is super thin and they didn't double box it. No packaging inside other than styro corner bits and plastic wrap. Despite this the cab showed up in near perfect condition (a few surface scuffs on the top that might be able to be buffed off, I haven't tried.) 3. The cab sounds AWESOME. I been using a greenback IR through my captor lately so I kinda knew what I was getting into and this thing RIPS. It's good and thumpy without any rattles or anything like that. The construction seems tight, although I haven't opened it up to see how it looks on the inside yet. 4. It's a little smallish and doesn't come with casters just little rubber feeties. Even with shipping it was only 40 bucks more than a quad of Greenbacks cost from Sweetwater or whatever. Great deal. I may even wind up grabbing a creamback or CB/GB mixed cab if I wind up loving this thing.

It seems like people perceive volume differences from a tube change as an actual shift in the tone. No, the amp is just louder or quieter. When the amp gets quieter it seems like the amp has more gain and more trebles and when the amp is louder has more low end and mid range. This is what's perceived in the room when your ear is 3'+ above the speaker. The microphone just picks up a volume difference... Once that volume difference is corrected for, the tonal shift is absolutely zero. In my experience anyways.
That said, I've had completely worn out power tubes that made my rectifier sound muddy as hell (I didn't even know they were worn out; the amp blew a fuse - i thought rectos were just muddy). When I put new ones in, the low end character absolutely came alive the amp was so much tighter. As tight as a recto can be anyways.

@@nicholasmullins3693 "Put on the back burner" and forgotten is two separate things, maybe for more modern metal it isnt used much if you need that harder percussive djent etc, for classic rock and heavy metal it has the sound. I have used my vintage 4x12 with greenbacks from the 60´s that i have owned for 30 years for rock, thrash, prog and classic metal and it sounds great. These days i mostly use my Harley Benton 2x12 with V30´s since that also sounds great and since we share reheasal studio with another band and im more careful with my old 4x12 since it has gone from being the cheapest 4x12 i could find 30 years ago to not at all cheap anymore.

Gotta agree with Frickenstein on this one, I quite often get compliments on how good my 5150iii through my Harley B. vertical sounds. And yes, it does sound beastly. I only took the logo off the front because it looks more like it really belongs on the side of a 1983 Olds Ninety Eight than an amp cab. But aside from that, for $237.00 as opposed to a grand for a Mesa, I'm one very satisfied customer. Thank you Thoman!! And btw Nigel's fucking hilarious.

Just a thought on a video (or even a series), based on the question about going to engineering school at around the 4:30 mark here. What about doing a comparison to how you can buy your own gear, setup a small room or garage to record in including acoustic treatments, mics, cables, plexi to reflect sound correctly so stuff doesn't bleed as bad, etc, small board or computer, interfaces, decent outboard gear and how to get that to sound decent (or even good!). Add that to your Spectre classes (and/or other online alternatives) and see what that costs compared to going to engineering school. Could be eye opening that you can probably get your classes, buy a good starting base of gear and start your own small studio for less than the cost of going somewhere to get a worthless certificate. Heck, even for us hacks that don't want to do this for a living and just want to have some fun recording our own stuff or for some friends, could probably get a lot out of that. Cheers!

I agree with Glen on alot, most of the things he mentioned in this video as well. I own a JVM 410, a 6505+, a blackstar HT 50, a Crate Blue Voodoo, an orange rockerverb 50, and a mid 90s dual rectifier. I also own about 14 guitars from gibson to ltd, an old mike shannon era soloist, some modern jacksons l, American Fenders, Import Fenders, and several japanese ibanezs. While price in no way dictates quality of sound, I can confidently tell you that there are big differences to the way each guitar and their pickups respond through each of my amps.
Some just saturate a little less, some sound generally darker, some are noticably brighter, some have more or less pick attack, some sound bigger, some sound thinner, but each is somewhat different than the last. My guitars with Dimarzios sound, to my ear, best through the orange and the 6505+. The HT 50 loves anything active and feels like a great halfway point between the Orange and the Mesa's ranges. The Marshall's red channels barely need toying with and you can find every lamb of god record tone with my goldtop lp classic plugged into it. The Mesa is instant metal core from the mid oughts with any active pickup or with duncan invaders. And the crate sounds like a tin can full of bees unless you've got passive duncans going into it with just the right overdrive. But when it's dialed in, it sounds exactly like that early nineties Marty Friedman sound from Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction.
I always dreamed of having access to the guitars, amps, and pedals that my idols used to make the music that shaped my young world and broadened my horizons with new concepts and ideas on the world. When I was in my twenties, with no kids yet, and suddenly made enough to buy a new $1.5k guitar every month while still putting away money into savings, I did. And, when I finish playing in the evenings, I sit in my loft with all my gear and stare in disbelief that my dream really did come true. After decades of practice and dreaming, I get to play my favorite songs on the very gear it was recorded on. It sometimes makes my eyes well up with tears having grown up so poor in my single mother's home and I have actually pinched myself on a few occasions to be sure this wasn't some fever dream.
Nothing feels better than giving a lesson to a poor kid whos family could barely afford his squire and handing him one of his idol's instruments, to play through a pedalboard one of his idol's might run, into an amp that I can find photos o their idols playing through. It makes anything seem possible and takes that spark of love for music and turns it into a blast furnace in which real discipline and dedication to a craft is formed. My setup has enabled me to watch so many lifelong pursuits realized and started and, for that, I'm immeasurably thankful, proud, and gifted.
Thanks Glen, for fueling fires all over the globe.

Glenn, I remember when you bought my drums and when you arrived to pick them up, I asked you what you do. You mentioned your TH-cam channel but then you indicated to me that I likely would not appreciate it and you referenced that you worked in an auto factory and that is just how you are. I must have looked a little clean cut and not the kind of person that likely would not appreciate the channel. Well, here I am a few years later and I watch a lot of your stuff. I introduced your channel to a friend who is a guitar player and I know he watches a lot of your stuff as well. I am clean cut and he is a long haired rocker type and we have been friends for decades now. We do both share a fondness for people who tell the real story. Your channel production is very high quality and the content is always interesting and I just love all of the feedback on feedback that happens. It is interesting how one's talent overrides the f-bombs, the long hair and becomes pure appreciation of skill and knowledge. Merry Fucking Christmas Glenn! Keep up the fantastic quantity and quality and by the way, your guitar playing looks to be improving a lot to top it all off.

That does not mean it cannot be done, I just haven’t been able to reproduce it with plug-ins, but maybe I haven’t found the sweet spot. My favorite rig was from my performing and recording in Jersey in the late 80’s. A 1970 AMPEG V4B with Grove tubes, an ADA MP1, a Digitech 255 XL, stereo thru a 4 x 12 1970 Marshall cab with 25 watt Green Backs and a 4 x 12 HARTKE aluminum cone cab. Man I miss that rig.

I can’t remember if this was the case in the tube shoot out video..but it may be worthwhile to take a load box in between an amp head and cab- to measure the spectral change between tubes…using a re amped performance as the only control variable. If you are using the same microphones and speakers as another control variable-there is still an inherent eq curve built it to those that would contribute to both things sharing identical frequencies.possibly, this could have lead to a false conclusion. Furthermore, it may be worthwhile to try the same test with a different spec of speakers.ie alnico etc..my guess is minimal difference with power tubes if any..if bias remains the same. But possibly subtle changes with preamp tubes..

To do your tube test, do it right! Shoot a 20Hz to KHz sine wave through a tube power amp and then compare with different power tubes. Don't forget to bias each amp the same, preferably at around 70-75% dissipation. Also, and very importantly, record multiple tracks shooting the signal at different line levels going into that tube power amp, like a guitar does (this is key to doing it correctly because tubes will compress the louder the signal is and flatten out) (you might be surprised at what db level the tube power amps start flattening out)....there is no difference between tubes ? I want to see just that! I have done it myself and there is definitely a difference. You can see it on this recording not to mention hear it if you have good ears. Start the signal at about - 50db into the power amp and then progressively move upward like +5db per recording and watch that signal change. Is it a huge amount? Not, always depending on the amp design but discerning players will "Feel" it. Oh, and Null test each track to see if there is a difference. Do the same test at the same db level like around - 40 to - 25 db into different tube power amps (Like a Marshall EL34 DESIGNED amp compared to a Mesa designed 6L6 amp)(No swapping EL34s into a Mesa- they are not "designed" nor biased properly for those type tubes-IOW; they sound nothing like a designed EL34 amp). Here you will see an even bigger difference. This will prove that after the speaker, the biggest difference in tone is your power amp. Do a SS power amp as well. You will find that the 6L6 amp is much closer in frequency response to a SS amp than an EL34 amp. The SS amps will typically be flat and the 6L6 will have some bumps and the EL34 will have much bigger bumps in that frequency response. Again, how do I know this? I have done it! You can then do a myth busting vid about....is it really best to crank your tube amp or just tickle it to where it gives the biggest frequency response. The answer is "Tickle". Some amps have several "Tickle" spots as you raise the level. The key to great tone is finding that spot on your amp.

So I’m new to guitar even though I’m old (as in, less than a month. I’ve only started developing callouses) I was looking at a guitar but wasn’t sure if it was any good, so I searched for reviews and found you. Then I found Rick Beats and Phil McKnight. I listen to you guys with whatever free time I have and just hope to absorb as much info as possible to try and scratch the itch while I’m not able to hold a guitar. Rick is a college professor and it’s hard to just listen. It’s like you have to focus on the lecture and take notes and cross reference with a musical dictionary. Phil is spectacular but is a bit slower paced and talks a lot about the business side of music. You on the other hand are entertaining and honestly rather thoughtful about how you present. I rarely feel like you’re speaking over my head, but I learn things from every video and find myself laughing. I DO spend way too much (according to my wife) on gear you review, but my son just tried to compliment me yesterday when I was discussing guitars by saying, “Wow dad, your knowledge has WAY surpassed your talent.” I owe that to you, so thanks I think. Now, do you know any TH-cam channels that teach talent? 😂

Time with Nigel is like eating Oreos: two are great, but a whole sleeve is a recipe for disaster. Soooooooo good, but use sparingly for longevity.
When someone says to me help me with my sound, most often they mean how do I write better songs to be more original. Too often we want to be like our hero's and unfortunately the masses end up sounding too much like what has already been written. Originality is very elusive. I spent years playing in a death metal band and felt as though I had to write the songs that I was surrounding myself with. Death, Meshuggah, At The Gates, In Flames... turned out that while I loved playing metal, I did not enjoy writing it. Stripped down to my naked core, no labels, I found that I enjoy writing in a completely different genre. The end result? I love what I do and one could say yes, it is original.
Happy Xmas Glenn. I appreciate all that you've done.

GLENNNN!!!! :) love the channel, been watching for years. I rarely comment, but I had an idea. I know it would kill the video’s monetization, but how about this? Take an older, popular album that could definitely have been improved with better production. Compare and contrast what could have been done to improve the sound. Maybe do some playing examples redoing some of the songs to improve them? What made the sound “suck” and how to make em “more metal.” Just off the top of my head, Let’s say Twisted Sisters album that had “we’re not gonna take it.” (Just an example) It had a bunch of hits on it, but in my opinion sounded like it was recorded in a garbage can. There are a LOT of albums like that from back in the day. It seems like that would be a good topic for a metal sound production channel. I don’t know the ins and outs of what you can “legally” do in a video, but I’d like to see something like that. Rock on and keep being awesome. :)
