- Filmed in Bob Dylan's trailer while he was working on the Hollywood movie HEARTS OF FIRE, in which Dylan played a retired rocker called Billy Parker. This clip is part of a BBC 'Omnibus' documentary called 'Getting to Dylan' (1987)

I'd be petrified to have Bob Dylan draw a picture of me, staring again and again with those stern, scowly, dagger sharp eyes.
fucking hell man, what a wise dude. thank god for people like bob. society would be utterly fucked without minds like these
drugstorerecords that's funny
@@Beggaronmars
He definitely drew a conclusion 😮😅

An interview that originally looked as if it was going nowhere, then Dylan opens up, and gives some deep perspectives.
I feel like he’s just sizing up interviewers to see if they’re worth his time and wants it to be on his terms. They start asking the right questions after a while
The interviewer did well here to find a topic that Bob wanted to talk about then NOT interrupting him.
"Machines are making the music. Have you notiiced how music all sounds the same?" Dylan said this in 1986! It's a thousand times worse now.
Rex Mundi What a cool drawing. Bob Dylan was not only a great songwriter, he was also a good artist too. Kanye going around calling himself a genius; he doesn't know what true genius is. Dylan is genius; Ray Charles was genius; Stevie Wonder is a genius. Kanye is NOT a genius.
+Rex Mundi no
+Rex Mundi ever heard of the war on drugs?
roy_for_real
ever heard a giraffe laugh?
Rex Mundi no
You can hear Dylan's confidence when the interviewer asks him about the drawing and he says I don't like it, "but I'll get it right"!
Wow, he totally predicted grunge!!!!
By the time of interview Grunge was already a “sound in the air”, it was already happening like he said, there are kids playing a bit of the old stuff!
Nirvana was formed in 1987, but others band started making a grunge sound in the Hardcore Punk scene!!
It wasn’t totally predicted I suppose!!
He said it will turn around, is prophet ,: 0
Or he just understood that music goes through periods of fads n then gets better etc but could be prophet, he had good understanding ,: 0
3:00
He predicted that it would become popular yes.
When you go see Bob, you just take him the way he is. He plays what he plays and you either like it or you don’t. I know cause I’ve seen him three times in concert.
1986..drum machines and other software can produce a lot more sounds that used to be played by multiple musicians...So Bob called that out and it's now the way a lot of people make music...I think of 'Ballad of a thin man regarding the interviewer.
oh god, imagine having a drawing of yourself by bob dylan
This is true my heart, In the 80s it was true all machines, In New York City in the Ritz, massive same music, Love you Bob Dylan
One of my favourite musicians/artist. Dylan is temperamental and brilliant 😆👍🏻🎸
Pretty sure he predicted the grunge/punk rock of the 90s here....
agreed
I love watching videos of him getting interviewed he always gives the interviewer a hard time
He was so right about kids going back to acoustic in the 90s holy cow
My late father loved Bob and we listened to his music throughout my youth and still today I love him
Dylan is really having fun in this interview, putting on the interviewer. The way he turned the table on the interviewer by drawing him during the interview was hilarious. “Do you know what I’m talking about.”
Yes definitely brilliant ❤️🔥👌
"the machines can only do so much." That's great.
@@richardwillford2418 the point of the quoted passage is that you still need to write good music to make good music. He's not saying 'you can't make good music with synthesizers', just 'synthesizers can't make good music on their own.'
Tom Petty called it “Shiite plastic computer music “
This is his and quite possibly the greatest interview any artist has ever gone in my opinion
I am so impressed by his ability not to completely lose it given the ridiculous questions and insinuations along with the woman in the back telling Dylan his sketch is "good, that's good" like a grade school art teacher or my old auntie.
Damn 9 years ago, you still sound like a nerd
the reason he was ignoring the interviewer in part 1 is because he nervous and uncomfortable...hence the drawing
but the more time goes by....he talks more and gets more comfortable with the guy'
he's sooo cute!
When the interviewer said he met "sara dylan" Bob said "jesus" under his breath probably thinking he was about to ask him about his ex-wife.
drinkingpoolwater lol
When he asks what does she look like . He looks worried.lol
He predicted the return of real music in the 90's quite accurately.
This is a great commentary of Bob Dylan ❤ Elizabeth 💞
Thanks for this amazing interview...
If you are wondering why Bob looks so fed up and miserable in this clip, take a look at the film he was making at the time, Hearts of Fire. Then you'll know why.
Lol
Does he look fed up and miserable? What clip are u lookin at?
I think that's just his face... He's casually *existing* and people project all this stuff onto him. Poor Bob. He has it rough.
The film was awful though. ; )
Two months after this interview Guns 'n Roses released their first album. This is what he was talking about. Real musicians doing real music.
Yep
Actually, he literally, predicted exactly what Nirvana would do, and the exact year they would do it.
2:49
This interview was in 1986, ‘Nevermind’ was released in 1991.
That’s when Nirvana completely changed the landscape of “Popular Music”. Before that, it was inconceivable for an “underground” Artist to become “famous/Pop Stars”.
And, Nevermind went on to be higher on the Charts-than Michael Jackson.
‘Nevermind’ is what ended “synthetic”, carbon copy, Pop and Rock Music-that Dylan was talking about.
@@CipherSerpico yeah in an earlier interview he said the only good , REAL rock n roll being made at that time was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Nothing but love for you Mr. Dylan - thanks for sharing your mind.
Imagine having Bob Dylan do a sketch of you wow.
Its sad that I come from the generation where "all the songs sound the same." :( I wish we could all go back to when music=art. :(
very enlightening interview
wow he defiantly predicted the 90s alternative scene
I love the trailer Bob! God, that was so long ago. I also love the way you think. We only own our souls. Money has nothing to do with that. No one can take that away because it's all ours. Thank you for sharing what you love with us. Your inspiration has touched our souls.
3:00 "In 4 or 5 years, that's all gonna turn around."
4 or 5 years later, NEVERMIND... yeah, Dylan was right.
for a while he was right, the 90s had lots of good music, especially the early-mid 90s, then it regressed to the manufactured state it is today.
It depends on what kind of modern music you're listening to. Popular music is only crappy now because it's easy to listen to for the casual music fan, who doesn't really give a second thought to the quality of their music. But that's just what it is- popular music. Very little of today's music is actually popular or well known, there are many unknown yet brilliant artists around today, you just don't go looking for them.
You know when the interview’s over and Bob’s alone he says to someone:
“Can I get some more markers?
These are all woorn ouuut.
Just tryin to make these doodles.
While I’m giivennn this INTERVIEWW.
Same talk same hairstyle.
Since nineteenth sixty TEW.”
He's cool with metaphors! Choosing to draw the interview in the first place, then the interviewer asks him if he likes what he has drawn and he answers that there is a bundch of thing he don't like about, but he will get it right! Lol, like he is working on the interviewer, basicly somehow softening him or reschooling him. Not that i think he is preaching or beein holy and all that stuff, just giving him a human face - he is even drawing him quite loveable somehow :)
gsnitable he's not doing any of that he's just doodling out of nervous energy ! people are so retarded about this guy . he's a good lyricist and great musician he's being up front with you he's not implying anything . calm down he's just a guy lol he constantly says he is just being normal and he's not gonna say anything too important. then he sits in a trailer and smokes 5 cigarettes doodled on crumpled up notebook paper . lol he's a little high I think but who knows
Bob sure is good at what he does...as artist in many ways
'NOT 4 ME..I DON'T PLAT THAT GAME'..
There's no 1 that I'd spend ANY time listening...let alone HEARING, what another says being interviewed OTHER than BD...always straight up..true blue. Young girl long ago & traveled w/every BD album from NY 2 CA.& back again..75 yr.'s young now w/a whole Lotta respect 4 BD since it was a rare time you'd get dialogue let alone tapes 4 us 2 hear/view . MAKING MY DAYS amazing...This is my 1st cell ever so u can imagine how great this is 4 me.
shit he predicted the grunge movement. I hope there's another change in music
There will be. Just wait.
@@peacebwithu97 it ain't getting any better
@@caydesmith7021 Not yet, but someday hopefully.
Music never found the same in the Motown era,,,,
These were pure musicians....
Pure writers ,pure singers....
From Aretha to the Jackson 5.....
From Smokey to the pee funk.....lol
All were sure and pure......
2:37 relevant to today as well I think!
Those hands are so lovely to look at.
"too many songs sound the same now".... I've been saying that for YEARS!!! lol
Love his drawings...
Holy crap! Dylan perfectly predicted the Grunge movement of the early 90s in this interview. He knows what he's talking about. :)
I like this man.
There is only one Bob Dylan. Don't judge him.
Howard Sherback thats surprisingly profound
He is right about the music.
The 'mock concert' referred to by the interviewer was a scene from the film 'Hearts of Fire, involving a performance by Bob in character as 'Billy Parker'.
Dylan predicts grunge in a way around the 3 minute mark
Drawing the interviewer is how he takes control of the situation. Look at his posture
i totally understand that.....there's something extremely interesting about him that goes beyond music....he's just so badass.
i'm only 19, its strange to have a crush on him....but the minute he starts talking...it's like wow
how the hell did bob dylan know that, 4 or 5 years (1990/91) from the point which this interview took place that music would change... bob said the kids werent listening to the music in the mainstream (aka madonna/poison) and kids were listneing to older stuff like for example kurt cobain was (older punk bands and the beatles/led zeppelin etc). and that these kiids wuld change music and Heck bob even said it will be exciting and fuck It was!
what a guy
dude, it was the 80s. the decade maxhines took over. eveeything became big and brash and shit, across all culture.
MrBrownstone1994 thing with Dylan is he is truly a prophet of his time.
The BIG problem with today's music is that all of the best & live musicians have been replaced by computer generated music. We need to put talented musicians back to work again.
cool drawing ..i like that
Dylan, just Dylan, what more is there to say
Hard to believe this is 25 years ago!
Country music still has good songwriters..
This whole part of the interview could have taken place yesterday.
how cool
God blessed us with Dylan
86 I left Ireland. Went to liverpool that July.
100% yes!
this was in 86... after 4 or 5 years grunge came in... this guy was tuned to whats going on
This man is a puzzle to say the least.
Bobby, unsere Augen ähneln sich sehr!
I love the Sara Dylan part.
He predicted grunge but grunge only last a few years. The state of music today is flat out dead. There is no zeitgeist.
drinkingpoolwater
There's a bunch of good music out there, but not enough of exposure.
Aaron where?
The only time EVER Dylan spoke on camera 😁
The reason he gives for why he makes music is interesting. Years before this, the writer Flannery O'Connor gave the same reason for why she wrote.
he kinda predicted punk/grunge coming back in the late 80s/ 90s
pop = popular music so I am using it in the context of what era I am discussing.
He's on something for sure. Buddy tries to interview him and he draws his portrait. Hilarious
also, he's drawing because he's brain is always being creative...he can't turn it off
i love how he holds up his picture.. like a little kid waiting for them to say it's good:)
He is drawing down on you man!
yep
@salsburysteakjr
oh please...freeze frame at :37
he's sweet face looking up for approval of his picture...he looks like a kid there
it drawing keeps me carm and focust
Sara Dylan haha that made Bob’s blood curdle..
he drawing and doing the interview....he's talking to him and answering his questions...just not in the ordinary way other people do....
but he's doing the interview people .
and drawing the guy (he should be flatter that he's drawing him...it's nice)
he predicts pop music, dance-electronic music more so to
Hes for sure on something. buddy trys and interview him and he draws a picture of him. hilarious
''Whent to the seclution of his own little kingdom''!! HAHA, Bob surely knows Bob!
Sad that the turnaround he speaks of still hasn't happened
:(
i totally agree , songs today sound all the same.
The Ballad of Reading Gaol.
That's so "Positively 4th street" ;D
A magnificent songwriter ...poet..
He speeks with music and poetry....
Why all this questioning about
What?????
Finding out who he is ...what he is thinking about......
Lalla tralla...
Forgett it.....
@SandGandBandD Exactly what I was thinking.
"In four or five years, it's all going to turn around" - yep, it sure did.
You could say this was prescient - but I guess even in 1986, the signs were there.
In 1991 we got what the press called "grunge" - and that spawned alternative music after.
But what Dylan talks about regarding synthetic music, having no ... history ... well, it went and got one - the machines got better, but more importantly, the _use_ of those machines got better - and it went and got that history.
The important thing being the _creative_ use, by humans, of those tools.
He was 45 at this time - and hell, he looks it - hard life, I guess.
31 years later, he's still touring.
Still touring - the never ending tour.
I'd like to have an interview with Bob and maybe sign my guitar but I would really like to have a talk with him...just you know talk not interview but like a "Hey how are you doing?" kinda talk. Just simple stuff.
At this point he does it to keep from dying. Retirement kills.
I'm sure I posted a comment about 10 years ago..maybe 100,,I dont know
This guy has nearly an hour to talk to Dylan and this is the shit he says?
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
@oobah2 Even more fascinating is when Jim Morrison did the same in 1969
6:36... that explains some.
I love his out look on life you love me or hate me he doesn't give a shit 🏴👍🎸😄
thats exactly wat i was thinking...
Interview on tv tonight
