      @@idk129a I'd suggest some testing to try to track down the issue. What are your temps looking like? Have you tested your drives or memory? Far less likely, the CPU. There are always potential software issues. A hard reset like that could be caused by a number of things, but I would start by testing the RAM with memtest86 an testing the HDD with HD Tune Pro, if you have an SSD check it with Crystal Disk Info.

      I would LOVE for you to do a video detailing specific oddities of these OEM builds, like you mentioned the fans in this video. Have it broken out by both manufacturer and model number. Specifically on the lookout for what to AVOID buying due to whitelists, or incompatibility with modern hardware, or a difficult workaround. Also maybe videos detailing little known 'sleeper' OEMs or turning into a budget gaming machine, like the HP 8300. Thanks for your consistently informative videos.

    personally, I love to use budget parts and play 1080p low or even 720 mid/high. I really hope to see more budget oriented videos like this one. optiplexes are, maybe, the best prebuilt pc available.

      I'll admit it... I'm hyped for the RTX 3000 series, RDNA2 and Zen 3. I'm pretty sure I'll be tossing a Zen 2 and a 3080 Ti in my main system. At the same time, I'm excited to see what the 3000 series means for a low profile GPU. Will we possibly see 1070 levels of performance out of a low profile GPU? And I'm excited about that too. I'm definitely torn between budget and the high end.

    Hey great video. One problem I had with my 3020 was upgrading cpu from i3 4130 to i5 4590 is that it introduced a restart freeze issue.
    Everything else worked fine but any process which needed a restart would require a manual power off/on. Solution was to drop the i3 back in and
    upgrade the bios from version A02 to A03. Put i5 back in...all is well.

    I got this exact same model a few days ago. It came with an i5 4460, 8Gigs of 1600Mhz Sdram, 128GB ssd, 1TB HDD and a Geforce GT 730 2GB DDR5 card. It feels super fast to me since i'm upgrading from a core2duo E6550 2.33Ghz, 2gb ddr2 ram and a 512mb HD 5450. I plan to play pre-2016 games for the time being before I can upgrade the cpu to an i7 4770, a new psu and a better graphics card. So far so good. I'm running games that struggled on my previous build on ultra settings.

    I like what you are doing. I'm subbed.
    You asked for a request, I'll give one. I have 3 7020sff's. At the time of purchase, I knew less, but did it due to price point you mention, at that time. If it doesn't make sense for you, I get it, but that's my request. My kids are not heavy gamers, the cheap 8570 is enough for now, but inquiring for future expansion.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even though the SFF models are pretty limiting when it comes to the GPU, due to size, it's a double edged sword, because the 240 watt PSU is really good enough for any low profile GPU you could fit in there. So,, you could just as easily toss the latest 1650 with GRRD6 in and be good to go. Plus, with the new 3000 series we might see quite a jump, even on the low profile models when they eventually come out.
      However, I am going to be planning on doing to SFF systems on the channel.

      just so you know...transplanting a an Optiplex into a new case isn't as easy as you think...Lots of Dell stuff that is hard to transplant into a regular case...there are a few videos on these issues.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually... transplanting them is a lot easier. There are adapters now that take care of everything on the front panel, plug and play. The worst part is dealing with the fans. While there are adapters for those, the fan controller is super picky about what fans will work without throwing an error.

    Had to rewire every single connector on the case so a normal ATX mainboard is fitting. Is it really necessary to even use custom fan connectors?
    Plan to drill a 120mm hole in the bottom where the HDD cage was installed and install a fan there for additional airflow. Of course I will need some taller feet to give the new fan enough space to breathe. :)

    These Optiplexes are a such a gateway drug PC for those of us who enjoy learning how to work with PC hardware. The low price of these units makes them accessible, and less scared of messing up while building the experience and confidence to venture into different hardware. A few months ago, I took this up as a hobby with a 3020 that I literally bought off of the back of someone's minivan for $70. I've now done builds with a 9020, a 7010, an Inspiron 3846, and a Lenovo Thinkcenter M83, some upgraded within case, others swapped into new or used aftermarket cases.
    Yesterday, I got a broken XPS 8920 and a functional Optiplex 745 as a trade-in for a couple of PCs I sold. I am also about to buy a Lenovo Erazer (I think it's the X700 model with an i7-3820, the seller wasn't specific, but the price makes the risk worth it) from a local seller. Kind of excited to work with hardware that I haven't worked with in the past. Which part of the XPS is still functional? Can the Optiplex 745 be upgraded into anything useful in 2020? What's even in the Lenovo? It's all very interesting.

    great video series, making entry gaming so much more affordable for newbies. I have a decent rig, but was recently given this exact 3020. I bought a new psu for it and a 24 pin to 8 pin adaptor for the dell mobo, and i got a free amd rx 580 gpu. Had a spare 120gb ssd and 500gb hard drive laying around, so i fired them in it too. Best content on the YT, you're a gift from above. Just ordered 3020 MT and I have two questions: 1. Do you recommend getting those cheap 24 to 8 pin adapters from Aliexpress?
    2. I saw your 4790K vid, do you have any experience with 4790T, how much worse is it than both 4790K and the regular 4790?

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ones on Ali Express... no. The ModDIY adapters are the best ones out there, and the shipping will take as long as buying from Ali Express. There were a couple I suggested on Amazon, but I haven't been able to find them in stock. And the adapters for the 20 series can be pretty tricky since there is a voltage conversion going on. If they mess something up, at best it might not work. At worst, it might kill components.
      As for the 4790T, I've never worked with one, but while the boost clock is only down 100MHz from the 4790, the base clock is way down at 2.7GHz. So, in CS Go the difference might be minimal, but in Battlefield V the difference would be pretty big. The higher you get in CPU utilization, the closer you get to the base clock. Now, I can't say if that means the 4790T will run at 2.9 to 3GHz under higher load, but if it does, it will REALLY hurt performance.

    Another question. If I have the 1650 Super with optiplex 9020, I want to overclock the gpu to 1800mhz on the stock 290W psu? can this be done safety. I am also running sata to 6pin setting.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would advise against overclocking on the stock power supply. For minimal increases in performance, you have exponential increases in power consumption. You'll quickly use up what buffer zone you had on the 12v rails. You'll also exceed the power rating of that single SATA power connection. You'll likely overload the power connection before anything. Even if you didn't, it would be a bad idea. If you want to OC, I suggest a better power supply. Not just a PSU with a higher wattage ratting, but an all around better power supply.

    • @TheGameBench

      As far as I know the SFF boards have a standard ATX screw pattern. However, the backplate for the stock cooler is part of the chassis, so you'd need to replace the cooler or find a compatible backplate for the stock cooler. For the front panel connections, there is an adapter for the power switch. I'm not sure if there are any other front panel connections, but if there might be an F1error on startup if they're not connected. If you're changing out the power supply, you'd also need a 24-pin to 8-pin adapter so you could use a standard power supply.

    My brother recently acquired a Dell optiplex 990 SFF and I'm wondering what the cpu upgrade options are, do their motherboards and BIOS support the xeon e3 1270? If not I might add an i7 2600. For the gpu I installed a gigabyte 1650 GDDR6 low profile. Do you also think more low profile cards will come out in the future, because it's strange to think the 1650 which was heavily criticized for being weaker and more expensive than the 570 is the best low profile gpu money can buy and the only reason it retains its price?

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, to answer the first part, a Xeon E3 1270 should work just fine in the 990 as it's pretty much an i7 2600 without integrated graphics and more PCIe lanes. Many people have used the desktop model Xeons in these without issues.
      As for the GPU... low profile GPU's sell for more because they're a niche product. You'll notice there aren't a lot of options for low profile GPU's. Maybe three of the board partners bother to make them. That's why they're more expensive. The GDDR6 1650 model is your best bet in a one of these SFF systems. And with seemingly less and less interest, they might be more and more of a niche product. I'm hoping to see 1660 Super levels of performance out of a low profile model this generation. However, I thought we'd see a 1650 Ti, but we didn't. And AMD didn't even bother with a low profile model with RDNA. They didn't even make a low end GPU.
      So, the future of LP GPU's might not be good.

      Depends on what CPU you have installed. Those only came with i3's and i5's, so it's not likely that you have an i7. If it's an i3 I wouldn't go more than something like the 1050 Ti. If you have an i5, something like the 1060. If you upgraded to an i7, then you could go up to about a 1080 for 1080p. If you wanted to go with something past that, you'd want to look into moving up to 1440p.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While most 1650's are entirely slot powered, there are some that require 6-pin supplemental power as they can consume up to 100 watts. It looks like the MSi Gaming cards do require the 6-pin power, where the Aero and the Ventus do not. However, if you end up with one that does, the 7010's power supply is adequate to power the card using a dual SATA to PCIe power adapter.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no real time frame on how long the board and other solid state components like the CPU and RAM will last. Typically these components fail early on, or well after their useful life. But there are a lot of variables that could make something fail is a shorter period of time. That being said replacements are very cheap depending on where you live. If it's still working, a new CMOS battery and some fresh thermal paste should have it lasting long enough until you replace it.

Ran across one with a standoff installed where it shouldn't have been. The guy was lucky it was just unstable and didn't kill something.

    what would be the best specs i could put in this if i got a new psu?

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The absolute best... depends on what resolution you want to run when you're gaming... and I assume you're gaming. But lets assume you want to stick to 1080p.
      CPU: Technically, the best is the 4790k. It does work in the 3020 and I've tested it. It performs about the same as the 9020, for the most part, in AAA titles... which I've tested in another video. However, the difference in esports titles, where you're CPU limited, is measurable. But I have a hard time suggesting the 4790k to most people unless you can get it for a decent price. Otherwise, the 4790 would be my suggestion, or you can look for the Xeon E3-1271 v3 which will perform about the same as the 4790 and cost less. It also does NOT have integrated graphics. You can also get more performance out of the CPU, whichever one you go with, via a program called Throttlestop from TechPowerUp. However, if you're going to do that, a cooler upgrade might be necessary... especially with the 4790k. And you'll definitely need to add some airflow to the system with a front intake fan.
      GPU: At 1080p, the GTX 1080, RTX 2060 or something else on that level is about the best I could suggest with the 4th Gen i7. After that, in most situations, bottlenecking becomes an issue at 1080p and you don't get much more performance. If you wanted to move up to 1440p you can use a better GPU, but I'm not sure what the ceiling is there. Just as the frame rate climbs up, the harder it is for the CPU to keep up with the GPU.
      RAM: This one's easy, you're limited to 16GB of DDR3 1600 in the 3020. You can run 32GB, but you have to bump up to the 7020/9020. But 16GB should be adequate for most games right now, but some can use up serious amounts of RAM, like Star Citizen, MS Flight Sim 2020 and games with a ton of mods.
      Drives: With the 3030, your best option are SATA SSDs or HDDs. Definitely boot off an SSD, and if you can get a decent speed SSD for games. If you move up to the 7020/9020 you can even use an NVMe m.2 drive for games via an m.2 to PCIe x4 card. However, you can't boot from that drive, just use it as secondary storage, but the 3020 doesn't have any x4 slots.
