- A Toyota master diagnostic technician shares some small things that tell the true age of the 5th generation Toyota 4Runner.
In this brand new series on my channel I will take you on a Journey of discovery if you would on the very popular 5th generation Toyota 4runner expanding from 2010-2021. I will go over most of the major components of the 4runner so we can find out together what makes this truck ancient and what makes it reliable.
In this final part of the series I will share some things that you might know or not know about the 4Runner that immediately tell it's age.
Things like the old school soft headliner that toyota did away with. Things like the lack of LED headlights up to the 2020 model year. Other things like the lack of automatic lane change turn signals.
Also the signature 4runner back door which has an ancient computer controlling it and the signature 4runner back glass and more things that owners or enthusiast might not know about.
As a closing video for this series I want to thank you for watching the series and hope that you liked it. In the future look for more 4Runner videos and I really hope @toyotausa doesn't change the 4runner in 2023.

Yup. I actually thank the powers that be that I crashed my car in 2019, which "forced" me to buy the 4Runner that I was planning to get at a later time. In 2020, Toyota started adding "safety" sensors the would have taken away my freedom to choose the specific accessories that I wanted. I also love turning the key to start my truck. There's just something special and nostalgic about it. Sometimes older mean simpler, and simpler is always better. I love my 2019 4Runner.

Next Tuesday I will turn 62, and start my social security, I have wanted a Toyota 4Runner for a year. I have wanted the 4Runner after watching your videos and Scotty Kilmers videos. I am a victim of ID theft, and have been working on getting my credit report cleaned up, and pray that I will be able to get one.

Before I got mine 2021 model, I always wanted 4runner. I would say between three to four years that I wanted to get 4runner. The price and no key lock gas cap that made me waited for two years but Toyota didn't grant my wish so I decided to buy with cash. So far, I love the strong v6 4.0L. I can't wait to get in and drive
The back window going down is one of the main things I like about my 4Runner.
Me too! Dog window at its finest. Even if I don’t have the dog that down with the two front half way is perfect breeze 😎
Sadly I’ve realized that the back window down sucks the exhaust back into the cabin.

My 95 bronco does the same thing, and it’s a tailgate not a lift

I have been waiting to buy the 4runner for 30 + years.. This is my dream car. For my 6Oth birthday (2 weeks ago).. I stop analyzing, debating, pro and con... what the heck just get it. A great series! I have had three 4-Runners, all used for work on remote, dirt roads. Except for flat tires, I have never
even come close to a breakdown - all systems have worked flawlessly over a period of 25 years. And I ran each of
the first two 4-Runners for approximately 250,000 miles. Yesterday, I put 200 miles on dirt roads on my present 2018
model - the sense of safety and reliability when your are out of cell range for 6 hours is priceless.
That’s how I feel about my ‘05 Tacoma sr5 4.0 v6 218,000 miles runs like new, burns no oil. 👍😊
I finally figured out I’m not going to live forever and decided to spend some of my dough and bought a ‘23 TRD Off-Road Premium. I wanted to get one before it gets a refresh and maybe a turbo. This old man wanted old school vehicle. Thank you Toyota for making such a great vehicle that people love.
Thanks so much for this series! I bought myself new 2016 Trail Premium for my retirement. Mary Beth now has only 8,650 miles on her. She gets driven at least once a week, and she glides over New England pot holes like butter....even with BF Goodrich KO2 tires. What an amazing vehicle she has been, and I've had over 60 in my life.
Dude... The back window was something that did not seem like much initially. But the back window is one of the most valuable parts of the vehicle.
We just bought a 2021 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium and love everything about it. Like you said, all the old stuff that was never improved is still just as fantastic as it used to be. Why fix what's not broken? We've owned Honda Civics, Pilots and CR-Vs, but we've never fallen in love like we have with the 4Runner. Sounds crazy!
As an owner of a 2016 SR5, this series was so entertaining and informative. Yes it’s so old school it hurts sometimes, but I still love my 4Runner more than any vehicle I’ve ever owned. Love the channel, keep up the great work!
Great informative Series. I’ve been a technician for over 40 years and I still learned a few things from you! Don’t forget when you use your key to lower or raise the rear glass it also locks and unlocks all of the doors.

Most informed contents on cars, ever. The more I hear the word "ancient" the more I feel like the 4runners are the last man standing.
I have owned 3 4runners since 2015 with the latest being 2021. I kept selling them but something about them brings me back to it. I want to share today what is it that I like about it. --- I own a 4 runner of course for reliability, but for that trucky feel while driving which is hard to get now in refined trucks, someone who has driven Lexus GX trucks would understand, I have always liked that trucky vibration which comes from the 4Runner especially with that trd exhaust. That is my appeal for 4Runner. It’s purely a truck which we are privileged to get in suv format.

Love my ancient 2016 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition. Outside of the Land Cruiser, I can't see myself in any other vehicle!
Sadly this year will be the last year for the Land Cruiser in the US.

Thank you for the insightful series on the 4Runner👍🏻The fact that these things are so old school and basic played no small part in my decision to buy one last summer...it’s the end of an era which obviously some of us don’t want to leave behind. I want nothing to do with modern tech vehicles and at age 55, I have a feeling this might be my last 4 wheeled vehicle ever.😃

Don’t sugar coat it, it’s ancient! The 150 series chassis has retained much, if not all, of the 120 series technology with only cosmetic changes. It is definitely not a bad thing and I love the fact that I can buy a new 4Runner and it would still be dead reliable like its 1990! Well, at least the last gen is as reliable as a 2003 was!

The 4R is basicly the Land Cruiser Prado! A legendary vehicle around the world
If you crack the tailgate window an inch or two and open the sunroof you get good control of air movement through the cabin without getting blasted from opening side windows. If it gets too cold or warm set HVAC on upper vent registers and adjust.
This allows you to get vitamin D from sunshine even in the Winter.
Also, rolling down the window rather than opening the liftgate allows groceries to be quickly loaded and prevents open liftgate driveaways (how I clipped the garnish on my garage door).
One caveat, opening the tailgate window most or all the way down while driving causes reverse air flow which pulls road dust and rain in. The dust fills the cabin all the way to the front.
Just bought a 2016 4runner. This video series has really helped me understand my newer car! Can't wait to see if I can get to 250,000.
Wool wax the frame if you live in the rust belt and it will easily get 250,000
Step by step guide for every time I get into my 4Runner….
1. Look with amazement at 4Runner
2. Get in and turn on 4Runner
3. Choose radio station
4. Let down windows
5. Drive away.

The main reason I purchased the 2020 4 runner TRDOR was is "Ancient" as you state, tech and workmanship. It lasts forever...for a reason.

In my 2017 the cruise control is one of the most valuable options. I love the way it was integrated onto the steering wheel.

The stalk cruise control is what I love about Toyota's. In my f250, I had to constantly look down at the wheel to find my cruise control buttons. Stalk is so much easier.

I didn't find your series until after I had bought my 2022 and the 2023 is exactly why. I'm a mechanic and in this insane market I needed a truck for my family I could own forever. You 100% verified what I'd researched and I'm so happy to know my '22 is still the same 4.0l 5spd it's been since... 2003 🤣
Title should be: "Everything that hasn't been changed on the 4Runner since 2003". I love my 2024 4Runner! Don't change what isn't broken!
I agree about the stalk type cruise control. You can use it by feel without looking at it!
It took a little getting used to but yes I now like the location.
Exactly why I bought my 2015 Limited. It’s my first Toyota but I’m very familiar with the 4Runner; my parents have 2 3rd gens and they’ve been absolute tanks. I’ve had mine for almost a year now and I absolutely love it. It may not have any of the latest gadgets but it’s modern and luxurious enough for me. Best of all is the peace of mind that you get knowing you own one of the most dependable vehicles out there.

Mr. Nut, your videos on the V6 for the latest Camrys and Avalons is why my wife and I bought a beautiful 70000 mile 19 Avalon Limited (real leather and real porous wood trim, yum). Your videos on the 4Runner are selling me too for a second vehicle for us. It’s actually between the GX460 and the 4Runner. GX advantages are the full time AWD, fantastic V8 and strong 6 speed auto. But the 4Runner simplicity is making this choice hard. Thanks for your videos!

We have a 2014 4Runner with 138K on the odometer. We haven’t had to do anything except routine service. We just bought a 2022 because the 2023 is rumored to have a new engine and drive train. The old one has been perfect. Sure, they aren’t the most fuel efficient vehicles but you can count on them to be 100% reliable.
I bought my wife a 2020, I loved it so much I got rid of my 2019 Tacoma for a 2021. Fantastic trucks!!

We just purchased a 2023 and we love it! I don’t care how much is old school or same design, it’s an awesome vehicle and I’m sure I’ll get the same service I had always gotten out of my Toyotas!
To me the most important part is not getting stuck in middle of Mohave desert. I needed something reliable since this is my overlander. I found so many jeeps and American trucks in general, just dead in middle of trails.
That's why I love my 4Runner as much as my '78 F250. Simple, rugged, utilitarian that has just the right amount of basic goodies (A/C, good stereo system, roll-down rear gate window, real 4WD system) that makes the 4Runner easy to live with. I will say one thing though, I do appreciate the butt warmer seats in Winter. It's not economical, fast or has a bunch of hi-tech goodies in it, but it's as reliable as the sunrise and will take you from A to B every day year after year. Just Fluid Film (not the rubberized undercoating!) the frame every year if you live in the rust/snow belt and the 4Runner will outlive you.

Oh darn...I love the cruise control stalk (on my Highlander and Prius). Easy to get to, convenient and SAFE. I can easily operate it without taking my eyes off the road.
Bro, I enjoy your series and all your videos. I have a 350,000 4Runner with the original 3vz engine that runs like a Swiss clock. Back then Toyota in the manual called the rear glass a "lift gate". Thank you for great dealer information also.

I'm a big fan of this channel and 4Runners ( I sold my 2002m at 298K 2 months ago) but just want to say, and this is something you have addressed..... Last week I passed on a 2018 because the nosediving was just awful. And I didn'twant to pay top dollar and them have to add Bilsteins. I bought a Ridgeline, likely not as reliable or bullettproof, but also cause I wanted a bed for yard stuff and furniture). LOVE THE CHANNEL !!
I enjoyed some of your video's. Am still driving my 1987 Toyota Hi-Lux SR-5 4x4 pickup. Purchased from the original owner in '03 with 94,000 miles. It is now 2023 and I am 9,020 miles from reaching the goal of 300,000 miles. It's a great truck and a daily driver and highly maintained. Keep up the great work.

Everyone that I've talked to that owns a 4runner say these are the reasons why they love it. Not a lot of unnecessary tech and toys. While happy some arguably long overdue upgrades were added, I still want one for the old school truck factor.
I was planning on upgrading the head unit when I was looking at the 4runner 3 years ago. Luckily they've updated it and I'm ok with the stock radio now.
I'm hoping to get one in the next couple of years or so. Unless the 6th gen really impresses me, which means I'll wait 3 years after it launches.
As others have stated please do a video on terrain select and crawl control. Thanks again for great series.

I hope Toyota watches this and reads all the comments. Love my 2018 TRD Offroad. Only 2 major changes it needs are better brakes and should come with AT tires. I would love more power but will stick with reliability.

I knew it was assembled in Japan but seeing that "100% of major components" ALSO come from the Japan was a nice surprise to me.
I couldn't agree more with your conclusions on not changing too much in 4 runner for 2023. 4runner doesn't need turbo engine etc.

Just got a 3rd gen 1999-2000 4 runner. Have wanted one forever, love it so far.
242k miles on it, no real mechanical issues, still running pretty good, still shifting good.
Only code it is showing is a transmission solenoid. A/C is struggling a bit and charging it with refrigerant is no longer working. Sunroof was leaking, that caused some issues (real pain in the ass actually, more of a pain in the ass than any engine issue ive dealt with.)
I am vey impressed.
Awesome series to watch , when you have a chance , please do one about the Camry , another icon of Toyota , congrats and keep that good work.
Nobody will steal gas from a 4Runner. They know it probably doesn’t have much fuel in the tank anyway! 😜
