I really like hearing notes out of key in the right way. Most people are so concerned about the "rules" it's refreshing to hear something different. Swinging, wailing, melodic, shredding, this solo has it all. Long live Steel Panther!
The parts about "just play any notes so long as you hit the core tones at the chord changes" type stuff. I went and tried that, and it dramatically just helped my guitar improvisation. I've been playing for 20 years, and sometimes I get stuck in a pentatonic mindset. He just helped me break out of the box. He's a genius just for that in my book.
Imagine being this talented and deciding to use your talents to screw around and just make it seem like you’re a rockstar asshat but you’re low key actually incredibly smart.
Only time I've ever really heard him slipping out of character! Must be hard pretending you don't know anything about something you're actually very knowledgable about! He clearly knows his theory!
At about 7:20 all is clear about this gentlemans understanding of music to me. ( I ve seen many vids and love the band!) All his theory is sound. I esp love the way he shows how different keys have many common notes and all the passing tones and ghost notes fall into place on the resolve to the new key or home key , it doesn't matter. Its rock and roll, Metal if you prefer....
"It starts off with this Detroit Rock City riff...which I ripped off from kiss...but you can do that in heavy metal! That's a cool riff I grew up listening to, and just knew j had to use it one of 'my' tunes!"
Dude you rock Satchel bring us back to the 80's where this world belongs when chicks and dudes had no tudes and love was in the air and in the bar oooh !
It's funny how he does it all in character yet it shows so hard he studied music hard and most likely taught it a lot as well. Things you do when you're roomies with Paul Gilbert. And also he is surprisingly aware of the little nuances students would be interested in. Like the point that he does an upstroke in the quintuplets, you might not think about that too much.
First time I heard Steel Panther was in 5th grade. I thought they were bitchin so looked them up and first song I heard was Gloryhole. Pretty sure I hit the jackpot with that music video. Here I am a freshman in high school just trying to learn to shred
Yeah I hear the Detroit Rock City thing too. But listen to -Burn it to the ground- and- something in your mouth- by nickelback and you'll hear the similarities. Don't no if you new but Chad Kroeger the lead singer co-wrote "It wont suck itself" with SP. But yeah let me no what you think bro... And im trying to think of the NB song that has almost the same riff
Camiel Hirschberg Yeah I hear the Detroit Rock City thing too. But listen to -Something in your mouth- and -Burn it to the ground- by Nickelback and you'll hear the similarities. Don't no if you know but Chad Kroeger the lead singer co-wrote "it wont suck itself" with SP. But let me know what you think bro...
I dont know who stole from who, but the riff at 10:52 is exactly like Europe's Yesterday's News. Anyway, both are amazing players, John Norum and Russ Parish.
My dream is for Satchel, one day in the future when he's riding around in a robotic wheelchair with his Kramer in his hands, still shooting heroin and snorting coke, all Keith Richards-y, long after Steel Panther, to open the most bitchinest guitar school to have ever existed EVER. No technology, just BADASSERY and every single kid that goes into that school comes out with a PhD in KICKASS SHRED SKILLZ with a babe on one arm and a killer guitar in the other and a little bit of white powder on their nose (okay forget the last part).
as sathel is the only player with lead guitar on stage, how he actually play both riff & lead at the same time ,i guess he didn't mentioned about his backing track
So for whatever reason I can't reply but thanks. Floyd roses are already a pain to tune so that's really useful. I have a Jackson rhoads v and it's in standard so I don't play a lot of drop D. Maybe I should get one. And learn how they work haha
Jake McGovern He's using an EVH amp which is among the most popular amps on the market for a reason. I've found it very difficult to replicate the sound with my Egnator renegade, but essentially it seems to be a 50/50 Fender+Marshall tube mix with mids turned down a lot and treble reduced slightly. It is actually closest to the native sound of a guitar, but other amps boost mids and treble because pickups generally don't pick them up very well. EVH guitars (coincidence XD ) don't have any problem with lacking mids or highs and will sound rather strange on normal (modern) amps because of that.
This video has three things:
1. Jokes
2. An actual guitar lesson
3. Hair
Hilarious how sometimes he falls out of character and the fact that he's incredibly intelligent slides in there. Great teacher and player.
Perfectly said!
??? His intelligence is evident ... comic genius ... musical genius.
Enough said ;) It's about doing licks, and hitting Chicks ... awesome hair, ROCKING pants ... ( hehehehe ) ... and two in the pink and one in the stink, Bro !!!
2:38 ...
Dissonance? Resolve? Did satchel break character?
He said Cro Magnons and tried to say it in a cool way hahaha
He's just hammering the fourth wall.
Exactly!! He sound like my dad 😂
No matter how much Satchel pretends to be a moron, he can't hide how talented and knowledgeable he is!
He went to Berkeley school of music. I wanna say he was an instructor for a spell but I may be wrong about that.
Love how Satchel dumbs himself down to get into his character. He's actually an amazing guitarist, and smart guy!
Flano So true
Satchel is a hell of a talented guitarist. And he`s funny as hell too!!!
+Lucas Pires Hell yeah dude ! !!!!
He is actually a genius who is pretending to be silly.
He used to play with Paul Gilbert ... he knows his stuff
We know.
Its amazing how many people don't get it
He was a guitar professor at a music conservatory
@@Bubbleslovesfood seriously?
i saw satchel and stixx standing in line at a five guys burger downtown vancouver wigs or anything most humble nicest guys super awsome made my fuckin life
Satchel is the only guy who could babel on through at least half of the video and not be annoying.
That's because he's Satchel. We all love him.
Lol.. I'm so pissed off everytime Satchel talk back to topic..
I love how he's intentionally trying to be stupid and then just immediately shreds a wicked solo
It's twice as funny because he's so damn smart
Always fucking around but never fucks around when talking about guitar. Such a cool dude
I have to admit that he has pure skill. Very cool lesson
Satchel videos are the best videos!
He's a really good player. He captures the 80s vibe, yet sounds unique doing so. Has a style of his own.
It really shows that he was teacher at GIT. One of the best guitar teachers there are, he really knows his shit!
I really like hearing notes out of key in the right way. Most people are so concerned about the "rules" it's refreshing to hear something different.
Swinging, wailing, melodic, shredding, this solo has it all.
Long live Steel Panther!

man that's so neat, such an underrated guitarist and band, mainly because people isn't smart enough to catch the irony in the aesthetic of the band
Jesus christ, where are you living where people don't realise Steel Panther are a comedy act?!?! 🤣
I STARTED DRINKING AT 6 AM ;) had a hangover and can totally say this guy healed me of the hangover
Him teaching that Solo is the most serious and he's legit trying to teach. It's not all comedy and sarcasm, It's pretty cool.
I love this guy.
that guitar sounds awesome
Rascal Jukka *bitchin'
That's mostly due to the player.
Once he really gets into the lesson, the whole "Satchel" drops and he becomes Russell John Parrish, GIT Graduate
You mean GIT Teacher. He taught there after graduation
@@steveeckert8396 TRUE.....
i really wanna see a review with Satchel!
Like I have said in another video; WE WANT MORE HOW TO PLAYS FROM SATCHEL!!!

"fun place to hang out" I see what you did there
Hilarious, and yet still without a doubt right up there with some of the greatest rock guitarists of our time.
My 16 year old son turned me on to these guys. I love them! They are great musicians.
Classic! "you can drink more on stage" lol
wow there is actually knowledge to be learned in this video.
At about 7:20 all is clear about this gentlemans understanding of music to me. ( I ve seen many vids and love the band!) All his theory is sound. great entertainer and great guitarist for sure.. long live satchel!
So funny and very talented.
Satchel is one awesome dude!
"It starts off with this Detroit Rock City riff...which I ripped off from kiss...but you can do that in heavy metal! That's a cool riff I grew up listening to, and just knew j had to use it one of 'my' tunes!"
I've been hooked on these lessons purely for the Bitchin factor. Quality lesson for sure!
Don't feel guilty... everyone goes there . hahaha
stratocasterbob LOL thanks Bob! Yeah, I'm guilty bro! :)
It's natural
Somebody as smart and witty as Satchel has to really be a genius to pull off acting shallow so well.
This is the most serious I've seen him yet! Amazing!😉
He also can play Smoke on the Water confirmed.
Ah... but can he play Smoke On the Water?
But can he smoke while being on the water?
@@leomessi7058 Deep Thoughts.... Woah.... my mind is twisted.
Dude you rock Satchel bring us back to the 80's where this world belongs when chicks and dudes had no tudes and love was in the air and in the bar oooh !
OMG right off the bat I'm laughing lol. What they do seems so simple but it's genius. Love this freaking band.
satchel is the man!
feel like these guys jsut have such fun playing these characters
"They get paid hundreds of dollars a year." :'D
There's also the interview with the captain from Andertons where Satchel teaches kids to write chords so they can make dozens of dollars a week XD
It's funny how he does it all in character yet it shows so hard he studied music hard and most likely taught it a lot as well. Things you do when you're roomies with Paul Gilbert. Great lesson. Thank you Satchel. Good humor too.
I like how Satchel is Satchel and then he focuses on musicianship and becomes Russ.
Monster player.
Youre a legend satchel how you'd combined it
People say there's no God, but this video clearly proves that statement is false
My favorite comment.
That's your best?
@Adam Robbins yeah well, your moms a moron
Great guitar player, great advice
"That means you can drink more on stage!" - Hahahahahahahahaha!
best instructional video ever.
''Gus G got only a sixpack from Guitarworld,I got a whole case of Beer.'' xD
Incredible info kids!!!!
Satch is the shit!
Thx for posting this GW!
Satchel and Phil X should do some videos. But is there enough caffjne for the two of them?
First time I heard Steel Panther was in 5th grade. I thought they were bitchin so looked them up and first song I heard was Gloryhole. Pretty sure I hit the jackpot with that music video. Here I am a freshman in high school just trying to learn to shred
this is actually a very good lesson
6:13-6:20 sounds like hes trying to figure out the intro to Mastadon- Seabeast :p
The riff reminded me of "detroit rock city" but that's not a bad thing at all.
More like Nickelback...
I'm not that farmiliar with the work of Nickelback (besides a few radio hits), any song in particular ? getting curious.
Yeah I hear the Detroit Rock City thing too. But listen to -Burn it to the ground- and- something in your mouth- by nickelback and you'll hear the similarities. +Vigo1999 It was Kee Marcello who played on that song, Norum wasn't in the band at that time
Satchel is the shit haha. hilarious and a fantastic guitar player, very very underrated.
Satchel is priceless. I truly believe in The Satchel School of Gueetar.

your shit is off the hook satchel love it!
I have a severe man crush on satchel he’s a genius
4:14 sounds a bit like the solo from Sweating Bullets.
THANK YOU MR. TARZAN
as sathel is the only player with lead guitar on stage, how he actually play both riff & lead at the same time ,i guess he didn't mentioned about his backing track
Satchel you're the best guitarist I know of. Secondly, why do guitar cables and outputs on guitar bodies (fender) always get loose bro?
One of the people who inspire me, along with Syn, Mick, Kirk, Dave, and James.
0:57 all I needed here lmfaooo
thats an amazing guitar sound
It's METAAAAAAAHHHHL!
The Ryan Reynolds of guitar
The way he just jumps up and says hi... that was so funny. :D
Any idea If satchel uses the blue or red channel for rhythm on his Evh amps ?
Satchel is a Guitar God.. Period!!
That is a great riff and solo, jokes aside.
For more descending chromatic fun, kids, listen to Megadeth's 'In My Darkest Hour'.
This guy still living in the 80s!
His Hair is not real :)
2:39 Beautiful.
holy shit its the actual love fist!
So on the bridge/term system there's a silver cylinder shaped thing on the back of it. Not really sure what that is. Anyone know?
when you pull it out it automatically tunes the e to a d. really neat invention
It's the D-tuna.
So for whatever reason I can't reply but thanks. Floyd roses are already a pain to tune so that's really useful. I have a Jackson rhoads v and it's in standard so I don't play a lot of drop D. Maybe I should get one. And learn how they work haha
satchel is a guitar god no matter how much he tries to be funny!
that "I love you. Don't ever give up." was too deep, man T-T
Does your D-tuner actually work? I've never had luck.
Look son, a legend!
Because of Steel Panther I always say "Bitchin" even that I'm German
I fucking love this guy. \m/
The most funny guitar lesson I've ever seen!
Actually here's some pretty good tips on plating chromatically. Landing on notes in the chord and so forth.
When Ben Stiller joins a heavy metal band
He does look a bit like Ben Stiller
Fucking awesome! Great vibrato and groove.
2019 and still learning the shit! 😁😁👍🏻
Impressive !
can someone tell me the cheapest rig to get this tone? (amps)
***** That is what i have been thinking with a delay :/ do you really think it will dial this in well?
