I would say the topwater bite will only get better and then its just a matter of following bait and puting yourself in the right area. Swimbaits and topwater should play a factor though.
I was catching a ton throwing a whopper plopper on bluffs on Cherokee I didn’t think about throwing a popper but like you was saying I threw a walking bait and wouldn’t even get one to look at it

I use a loop knot most of the time on topwater walking baits but unless im trying to put some walking action into a popper I just tie direct. I never use a split ring because I dont like the idea of any extra weight on the front of the popper, I know a split ring weighs next to nothing but I still think about meaningless stuff like that in my head lol
I talk about that color on your popper a lot in clearer water and a bunch of different hard baits. It's money man.
