  • This video is about stupid people driving in snow. Obviously most Alabamians can drive in snow, but you do have your few that have absolutely no idea what they are doing.

    The word stupid should be in capitol letters, lol. I learned to drive in worse snow than this in northern New york about 60 years ago before they had 4wheel drives and front wheel drives. You either learned how to drive with just rear wheel drive or you stayed home, lol.

    No one should have been caught off guard. Everyone has access to good wx forecasts, especially NOAA NWS. Further, most drivers have an overinflated notion of what their actual driving skills are. If after being honest with yourself you can't handle it, don't.

    I lived in Alaska when I was much, much younger and it was a dry climate, or dry enough that the snow didn't usually have caked ice underneath and it was still slick to drive on. Thus, nearly everyone carried snow chains in their car and knew how to use them. Evidently, the people in this video believe that snow tires will solve their problem - it won't! There are so many good ways to get around in the winter and I would sure as heck have something to prevent getting into these situations; especially if I had to live there permanently. Just stupid not to be prepared.

    Tyres...Tyres...Tyres.....
    It's all about tyres.
    Modern tyres with standard circumferential tread patterns, (a groove that runs in one or more channels around the tyre without interruption), which are fitted to most cars these days, are useless in snow. They are derived from racing car tyres and are harder rubber. This and the fact that they have circumferential tread and groove patterns mean they will never provide adhesion in snow. They are too smooth and the tread pattern provides no lateral grip as the wheel rotates.
    You can always spot when these are the problem because drivers invariably try to get their skidding wheels to grip by adding more power....something which obviously does not work.
    Incidently, there is an argument that says tyres with circumferential tread patterns are not as efficient as one might want in displacing water, (rain), because at the point of contact with the water the tyre is not able to displace it sideways and away from the tyre. As a consequence, there is a greater risk of aquaplaning.
    All this means is that they are polishing the snow and most probably the road surface, if their tyres reach it.
    I prefer to use winter tyres all year long.....and feel confident they can handle most everyday situations on the road.
    There is, of course, one other fact that makes driving in snow difficult..........and this is poor driving.
    Something which derives from poor knowledge of driving and perhaps from a failure to adapt to the conditions applicable at the time.

    1 inch on the road and people are stuck? Just be gentle on the gas and keep your momentum steady.

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is short tempers and an amazing lack of patience. Jane Q Public (hey, the women are just as short-tempered as the guys!) gets in her uber-powerful V8 SUV and rockets out of the garage. She thinks the snow and ice will not affect her 10-minute drive to the supermarket but she also needs to pick up the kids from school. She sees the road start to gently slope upwards and hits the gas, thinking speed will help her get past the hill. At 40 mph, the back of the SUV loses its grip and she spins into and hits a parked car. Then the next person does it. Then another. I see this happen in northern Texas every time it snows.
      EVERY time!
