Actually building bluestone dam and the resulting lake was a brilliant move by the engineers long ago thereby controlling flood waters coming from the New and Bluestone rivers that would have endangered thousands of people, their homes and businesses and industries in the lower Kanawha River basin. Given the possibility of high flows in the Greenbrier, Gauley, Elk rivers downriver that would endanger the Capitol, Bluestone provides a measure of safety for that area of West Virginia, not to mention the boating, fishing and camping that the Lake provides for millions of users every year. The major rehabilitation ongoing now at the dam will assure that Bluestone provides protection for many years to come…..essayons.
