USACE Huntington District
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 ก.พ. 2018
The Huntington District protects the nation’s aquatic resources while enhancing the region’s economy by pioneering solutions with regional and national partners (and volunteers) to ensure water navigation, reduce flood risk, encourage recreation, preserve and restore streams and ecosystems, and prepare for and respond to disasters.
Dam Safety Awareness Day 2023
On May 31st, we join together to commemorate National Dam Safety Awareness Day. On this day, we remember the lessons learned from past dam failures, push for strong dam safety programs, encourage investment in America's critical infrastructure and rededicate ourselves to the effective public-private partnerships that work to keep America's dams safe, operational and resilient.
The issue of dam safety was not widely recognized until 1889 when the failure of South Fork Dam near Johnstown, Pennsylvania claimed more than 2,200 lives. As we observe the 134th anniversary of this tragedy on May 31, we encourage you to understand the importance of dam safety, the role various parties play, and current dam safety issues.
Water is one of our most precious resources; our lives depend on it. Throughout the history of humankind, people have built dams to maximize use of this vital resource.
There are more than 90,000 dams in the United States and most states are home to hundreds, if not thousands of dams. They are an extremely important part of this nation's infrastructure equal in importance to bridges, roads, and airports.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Huntington District Dam Safety Program Uses a risk-informed approach to manage its portfolio of 44 dams, with public safety the number one priority. The primary authorized purpose for most of these dams is flood control. These projects also provide multiple benefits including recreation, water supply, fish and wildlife conservation, navigation, and hydropower. These benefits are critical to watershed management and integral to many communities.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates and maintains approximately 740 dams and associated structures nationwide that provide significant benefits to the nation, its people, business, critical infrastructure and the environment.

This video is disturbing. The over reach is mind numbing. Sorry, Robert Lilly.
Actually building bluestone dam and the resulting lake was a brilliant move by the engineers long ago thereby controlling flood waters coming from the New and Bluestone rivers that would have endangered thousands of people, their homes and businesses and industries in the lower Kanawha River basin. Given the possibility of high flows in the Greenbrier, Gauley, Elk rivers downriver that would endanger the Capitol, Bluestone provides a measure of safety for that area of West Virginia, not to mention the boating, fishing and camping that the Lake provides for millions of users every year. The major rehabilitation ongoing now at the dam will assure that Bluestone provides protection for many years to come…..essayons.
Has this nonstructural project started yet? Reminds me of the first one in Williamson, WV……..5 prototypes and then full speed ahead. Essayons
I spent many hours both above and below the damn in my younger years. I sorot of always ignored the sign about the horn blast and rising water until I was in the middle of the catwalk fishing and it started sounding. I was the last person out of the water and by the time I got my truck loaded up the breakers had disappeared. It made a believer out of me. Back in the 60's the lake was a happening place with two marinas completely full, it's sad to see the state of the lake now. It needs a good dredging up the New and the Bluestone but it will continue to fill up with garbage I would assume.
I had the pleasure of working with Crystal at the Huntington District, what a super lady she was and an outstanding member of the District staff. I miss her.
That looks like Beech Fork.
Great video Huntington team. Glad that I found this online and got to see several of my dear friends at the Huntington office still working to provide flood protection and recreation for the region. Ironically, Bluestone Lake was my first project after joining the Huntington District in 1973 and I just found the 1975 Bluestone Lake Master Plan (published April 1975) online in the Corps' library database. That recreation and land management plan was my baby for two years and I spent countless hours at the lake (on the lake and hiking the property) to formulate expanded campground sites, boat launching sites, picnicking and site seeing locations. Got a personal tour through the dam's inner chambers by the reservoir manager at the time, noisy place. The boat ramp under the Route 20 bridge (Bluestone River) was the first project built by the Huntington District using the PL89-72 recreation cost sharing authorization. Also ironically, Bluestone Lake was one of my last projects before retirement as I spent several months determining the potential downstream impacts of the dam's possible failure and the impacts to upstream recreation sites (inundation) while the work progressed on the stilling basin construction. My thanks to the Huntington team for their hard work and leadership in getting that dam rehabilitation project completed.
Did you know General Lee over in soils?

I understand this is a small part of the class, however, I hope the rest is with a lot more intensity and realism.
I’m a little worried about this because I’m going to either work with robots or build robots
POV: u came here bc ur teacher gave u a link
Yeah why are there no comments?
Not there being no comments lol
Bluestone Lake is a gem of opportunity. However getting on the lake is all but impossible. Businesses are not allowed. You may get lucky to rent one of 6 pontoon boats. 2000 acres of missed opportunity. With them wanting to close all the campsites, good luck visiting and enjoying this fabulous lake.

My grand father Charles E. Montgomery sr. ( Pipestem) helped to build this dam.
My great-grandfather, Lewis G. Williams, was killed building this dam. He was also a bus driver for the local schools.
This is really great information. For those of us new to West Virginia and who live along these rivers, this video really helps our education of the area. Thank you!
Who made up or invented spear training?
Tony Blauer. Been around for decades because it works. It's for surviving an ambush.
This is poor instruction in the SPEAR.

So they knew this would happen. Even got millions to help protect them. Guess they spent all the money on beer and smoked meats

I guess as another government agency, you don't have to worry about OSHA showing up and bitching about stairs with no handrail and not being tethered in to work out there...
Used to rock climb down here, saw the lake nearly empty sometime back in the 90's. Every weekend it would be lower.
DAMN I miss that hillbilly girl twang..🤙😊
Accent... Love THEM curls too😊💯😎
I'm originally from Mercer county... Girl you are smoking ass hottt... And I absolutely love you hillbilly twang... AKA
If not for the USACE and the dam system in WV my neighborhood would probably been flooded out twice since the 60's! Thanks!!!
Good times on the Gauley river. WVa, beauty is a treasure.
Hopefully hydroelectric power can be possible again with future projects

I often wonder how the structures of US Army Corps of Engineers work exactly, I've seen them doing projects all over the country, are they soldiers or are they civilian engineers? For example, the lady in this video, is she an active duty Army soldier? A reservist Army soldier that works as an engineer in her civilian job? Or is she a civilian contractor hired by the USACE to work for them?
Most are civilian but there are military members. My hubby was Prime Power which is part of USACE and he was active duty
The lake should be drained unless the corp can show it’s assisting with flood prevention up and down stream. Right now there are significant flooding issues up stream that the corp of engineers continue to ignore and brush off.
They don't care about up stream flooding, the lake filling with water is literally up stream flooding. It was built to prevent flooding down stream.
There's no upstream flooding.its all downhill to the lake, and the dam can only hold so much untill it overflows. I'm a resident living a half mile away.
Lisa Morgan is pretty.
Isn't it great to see one of our great successes after witnessing so many failures, especially involving the federal government.
Where do we get applications? I have tried contacting your office with no response.
When will you all be contacting people after the applications are processed?

Thank you for all the hard work you are doing!
Thank you for your service and mission especially along the Ohio River.

You’re right Poonchaser, he is short & gray shirts are not flattering. I’ve been in law enforcement for 30 years, any criminal would love to run into him.
