- The Yamis, last survivors of the 9 aboriginal peoples of Taïwan, live isolated in the China Seas, on the island of Orchids. Like his ancestors, Syaman is a fisherman venerating “Black Wings”, the king of flying fish. When spring comes, the Yamis get ready to celebrate the opening of the fishing season. Tonight, they will relive the “night of the silver helmets”, when their ancestors were guided to the shore of their island by this strange and mysterious fish.

Great channel!!! I am so intrigued and fascinated about learning of the peoples and cultures and all the many languages of this world. It sad for me to think of all the ones that have been lost and forgotten. I try to teach my grand children about such things when we are together. Great content, great work.

Woah. This island yami is just next to my hometown island northern most last inhabited island in the Philippines ( Itbayat, Batanes). We called them
" Irala" their language has quite similarity in our local language. Fun fact during Batanes Day Celebration their was an event which we have cultural exchange with them they come here in Batanes.
They are the model of preserving nature and balancing the ecosystem, brilliant people yet indigenous

Thanks for posting this video. I've been looking for this for a long time.
I saw this documentary some twenty years ago in Discovery Channel but only parts of it on a rather poor audio from my old TV. Still, the sounds I heard from the documentary then never left me, because I thought I recognized some of the words that they were speaking.
Now, after watching this video now, some twenty years later on the internet on a better audio, I now understand why their words were familiar -- because their language share a lot with the Ivatan language of Batanes, Philippines (about 200 km south of Lanyu).
As the narrator said "my ancestors came from the south". South of Lanyu is Batanes, Philippines. Yes the Tao people of Lanyu have a lot of things in common with the Ivatans of the Philippines.
Someday I want to visit the land of the Tao.

I always love to watch documentaries
Leztah dezmu.. me too..watching different documentaries makes us more knowledgeable, and understanding, more kind to people.
These people are the ancestors of modern pacific islanders especially the polynesians. their language spoken is more related to the Austronesian speakers. its good to document such unique cultures because it proves their continuity for posterity use and awareness.
Would love to see how each tribe makes fire. The different techniques would make the documentary even more interesting
"Yami" is actually an exonym. They would rather call themselves "the Tao", which is now their official name recognized by the government. A recent movie on the Tao peaple is "Long Time No Sea" (2018), portraying an interesting psychological struggle between the efforts of reviving the traditional Tao marine culture and the pressure from the outside world. I enjoyed the performance of the boy actor Si Pangoyod (aka Chung Chia-Chun). He is a genius and deserves all the awards.
if you say "Tao " people ...it is same language use in the Philippines " Tao " means a person.
@@robego1660 Yes, exactly! Among the 16 officially recognized Austronesian indigenous languages of Taiwan, Tao is the only Philippine (Ivatan) language, whereas all the others are grouped as the Formosan languages.
@@changliangqu6627 this is true. Im Ivatan and I understand some of their language. I was born in Itbayat, Batanes (the last inhabited island in the Northern Philippines). Though our language has a bit different in Ivatan. We called it Itbayaten. Some towns here still practice this tradition quite simillar to what we call "mataw" this was during flying fish and dorado season.

Theirs a lot of similarity on the onset ritual practice before the first fishing day of the flying fish ( dibang called locally in Batan Island) season in march to may, of the Ivatan in Batanes. The dialect they speak had a lot in common with the us in Batanes ( Orchids flowers are common in Mt. Iraya, the highest Peak in Batanes), the Northern most Inhabited Island of the Philippines. I don't understand why Taiwanese government build nuclear waste storage facility on these people's beautiful Island. The US government did the same thing on Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands. Something money can't buy to clean it up. Our ocean and Islands will be contaminated, our ways of life, our culture will be vanished.

This people are more Filipino in culture than of Taiwanese, only thing that set them apart is that there Island is nearest to Taiwan, so in short it is part of Taiwan's boundary. If only this Island was more of in between Taiwan and Philippines maybe we can have a hold to them for they are more Filipinos.
Even their tradition and culture as well as their traditional costume are very much similar to our nagas of Northeast India( The Head Hunters).
They are Taiwanese, it's like saying that Bajau in Malaysia are 'more Filipinos' because they happen to be related to Bajaus in the Philippines

They look like Philippines, i think they share alot in common. Wonderful life style.
These indigenous people, are actually practising very sound principles of conservation of those flying fish.Regulated catches at specific time/ season.This prevent the over exploitation of this resource allowing it time to replenish it self. There is much we can learn from them, how to live in harmony with nature and conserve the ecosystems anyhere in the world.

of welcome relief from amongst the glass & steel jungle of city being..
They must hang the fish before sunrise so that it's wind dry before the sun comes up. It will prevent the flies from laying their eggs in the fish causing worms.
This is a technic that we used for smoking fish when I was a child. My father used to catch fish - sometimes up to 150 a day. We would overnight the fish in salt water and hang it before sunrise. We used to smoke catfish as it's not a good fish for frying.

@@zigman7140 I go to the other end of The Philippines on Mindanao in summertime its between 30-35C and in winter its about 30-35C, There is no summer and winter there its called the wet and the dry season.
They are further north so may be a bit little different.
@@zigman7140 The 2nd name of the tiny island is 火山島 （burning island ） The south of Taiwan is hot and burning hot without winter. Your coat and pants are not necessary for the island. The bamboo coat or leafy coat are more suitable for typhoons area.
@lily feng but in December it's very cold wind up to month of march or April because of the winds came from Siberia down to Taiwan and north Philippines

Yes the Igorots of the Mt Provinces are related since we all are from the Austronesian migration. I think we the Ivatans of Batanes have the closest link to the Tao of Lanyu in terms of language. We understand 80 percent of their language same as they understood us. We share the same fishing rituals practices. Hope this is helpful. Merry Christmas!

I believe this is how is how god intended us to live live in a village community hunt for food build shelter to live in . Instead of the way we live now these people are truly blessed

Indians and natives are very in to farytails and the pink dolfin that becomes man when there is full moon and the dragon that is held by the biggest rock of the river or the big animal that comes out a bridge after 8 pm.
