- I got my hands on some local mussels, but when I shelled them they were too soft for bait (totally useless)
So I thought I would try Salting them to toughen them up and am pleasantly surprised with the results as they firmed up nicely
A few reasons to salt Bait - It toughens and Preserves the bait as well as intensifies the scent for more Bites
Also No need to freeze or refrigerate, Keep in your Boat or Tackle box

Quick tip from the Isle of Man (British Isles)-
Rather than soaking up the juice with paper towel before salting, simply let the juice initially drain out into the lower container.
Freeze it in a plastic milk bottle or similar, adding more as you do more salting sessions.
Take the frozen bottle with you when you go fishing, punch a few holes in it and suspend it in the water.
Poor man's chum attractant!

I was seen the one when you were doing prawns and you had gloves on because you are allergic to them. What’s the difference between prawns and mussels for you. I thought it would be similar
No prawns are a crustacean I'm allergic to all crustaceans I can eat oysters and Mussels as well as fish
Where do you find mussels in Mackay?
I got some from the River Street fish shop assured that they were local muscles, I have looked everywhere I can't find any in Mackay
